Jan 11 (Reuters) - Apple Inc (AAPL.O) is actively working on adding touch screens to its Mac computers, Bloomberg News reported on Wednesday, citing people familiar with the project.

Capping a week of Apple rumors about the company"s mixed-reality headset plans and its efforts to design its displays and wireless chips in-house, Bloomberg"s Mark Gurman reports that Apple might reverse years of design decisions and rhetoric and add touchscreens to a future MacBook Pro refresh.

The report says Apple"s hardware engineers are "actively engaged in the project" and that the company is "seriously considering" the move, but "plans could change" before the touchscreen Mac"s possible launch in 2025—don"t expect them to come with the M2 MacBook Pro refresh we"re expecting this year.

If true, this wouldn"t be the first time Apple tested Mac touchscreens internally. In fact, multiple company execs over the last decade-plus have gone on the record to say that Apple has tested touchscreen Macs—usually while explaining why they think touchscreen Macs are a bad and unworkable idea.

"We"ve done tons of user testing on this, and it turns out it doesn"t work," said then-Apple CEO Steve Jobs in 2010, talking about why the company was focusing on its Mac touchpads instead. "Touch surfaces don"t want to be vertical. It gives great demo but after a short period of time, you start to fatigue and after an extended period of time, your arm wants to fall off. It doesn’t work, it’s ergonomically terrible.”

"If we were to do multi-touch on the screen of the notebook, that wouldn’t be enough—then the desktop wouldn’t work that way,” said Apple"s Phil Schiller in a 2016 interview. "Our teams worked on that for a number of times over the years. We"ve absolutely come away with the belief that it isn"t the right thing to do."

"We really feel that the ergonomics of using a Mac are that your hands are rested on a surface, and that lifting your arm up to poke a screen is a pretty fatiguing thing to do," said Federighi in 2018, speaking about its plans to allow easier porting of iOS apps to future versions of macOS.

“I gotta tell you when we released Big Sur, and these articles started coming out saying, ‘Oh my God, look, Apple is preparing for touch,’" said Federighi in 2020, "I was thinking like, ‘Whoa, why?’"

"We make the world"s best touch computer on an iPad," said Apple hardware engineering SVP John Ternus in 2021. "It"s totally optimized for that. And the Mac is totally optimized for indirect input. We haven"t really felt a reason to change that."

We collect these quotes not to suggest the Bloomberg report is incorrect, but to show that Apple engineers and top brass have tested touchscreen Macs before and found them wanting, and most of the executives who have made those decisions over the years are still with the company. Bloomberg says that there is "pressure" on Apple to add touchscreens to Macs because its competitors in the PC space are doing so, but PC makers have been doing that for a decade now, so that pressure isn"t new, either.

If Apple changes its long-held stance and adds touchscreens to Macs, the report says that they won"t result in any kind of combined iPad and Mac operating system—iPads will continue to run iPadOS, and Macs will continue to run macOS. But the touchscreens would support multitouch gestures and would presumably be useful for people who run iOS and iPadOS apps and games on their Apple Silicon Macs.

The closest Apple has come to adding a touchscreen to Macs so far is the Touch Bar, a horizontal strip of screen that replaced the function row on some MacBook Pro keyboards in 2016. The Touch Bar could dynamically change its contents based on the app you were using, but few third-party developers effectively used the technology. Apple has steadily replaced the Touch Bar with a new row of function keys in recent refreshes, and the 13-inch MacBook Pro is the only one of Apple"s current laptops to include one.

Back in 2010, Apple"s founder Steve Jobs said adding touch screens to Macs would be "ergonomically terrible." In 2012, his successor as CEO, Tim Cook, mocked Microsoft"s decision to combine its tablets and laptops as the equivalent of fusing a toaster and a refrigerator.

Apple"s pivot is likely due to the growing number of competitors like Dell, Lenovo, and Microsoftselling touch screen laptops. Many of these models have 360-degree hinges and sit at the intersection of tablets and laptops, as opposed to being squarely in one category.

While Apple long worried that touch screen laptops might overtake the company"s iPad sales, in recent years, laptops have brought in more money, according to Bloomberg. So, it makes sense for Apple to finally jump on the touch screen trend.

Teams inside Apple are working on the project, and the first design would include a trackpad and keyboard as well as a touchscreen, according to the report.

The move, if it were to happen, would mark a significant reversal for Apple, which has said for years that touchscreen laptops are ergonomically inferior, even as competing Windows laptops now have touchscreens as a standard feature.

"We really feel that the ergonomics of using a Mac are that your hands are rested on a surface, and that lifting your arm up to poke a screen is a pretty fatiguing thing to do," Apple"s head of software Craig Federighi said in 2018, adding that he"s "not into touchscreens" on PCs.

Apple"s Mac business doesn"t need a shot in the arm, though. Mac sales surged when Apple replaced Intel processors in most of its computers with its own silicon. The change improved battery life and reduced overheating. Apple"s Mac business generated $40.1 billion in revenue during the company"s fiscal 2022, up 14% from 2021.

A touchscreen Mac would require significant software changes to accept finger taps, which require larger buttons, instead of mouse clicks. Apple"s iPhone and iPads use an operating system designed for touchscreens, while macOS can currently only be controlled with a mouse and keyboard.

Imagine bringing that big, glossy screen from it"s stand... pulling it down towards the desk so it sits like a large tablet. Then you manipulating the display from that comfortable angle. I believe Microsoft brought this concept to life with one of their prototypes.

For MacBooks... it doesn"t make much sense. They could potentially add a 360" swivel hinge. And maybe start selling External Monitors, with a built-in touchscreen, that supports macOS devices.

The big challenge is about how to transform an Operating System that is cramped densely with information, into something that"s more friendly to fat fingers. I don"t think its possible. They"ve already transformed OS X into macOS, by the time they transform macOS further to have touchscreen they"ll basically have iPadOS on their hands, and if they keep going it will be iOS, tvOS, and watchOS level.

Apple is very much alive in the touchscreen market, yet something feels missing — what about touchscreen Macbooks? Many Apple fans expect Apple to release touchscreen Macs at some point in the future. However, there are many reasons why they probably won’t ever release them.

The noise around any release of a new model of the MacBooks has to deal with whether it will come with a touchscreen. The hope is that Apple can adopt what other laptop manufacturers such as Dell, HP, and Lenovo have done and give us a touchscreen Mac. The short answer to all this is that Apple doesn’t think that would be necessary for now.

Apple founder Steve Jobs in 2010 said touchscreen laptops don’t work and that they were in no rush to bring that feature to their laptops. He explained that the reason behind their decision was that it would be “ergonomically terrible.”

From those two quotes, it is clear that even after ten years, Apple hasn’t changed their opinion on touchscreen Macs. Instead, they seem content with having the iPad as their “touchscreen computer.” In 2021, at the release of the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro updates, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering, John Ternus, said:

“We make the world’s best touch computer on an iPad, and it’s totally optimized for that. And the Mac is totally optimized for indirect input, and we haven’t really felt a reason to change that.”

Well, the saying “Customer is King” is still very true. Who knows? Maybe in future, the force of demand will dictate that a touchscreen Mac is needed, and then Apple might fall.

However, there could be a possibility of Apple introducing a 2-in-1 laptop with a touchscreen in the future. We have seen Dell and HP take this route, among other laptop manufacturers. This idea looks unrealistic for now, given that Apple Executives have already mentioned that the iPad exists for people who want a touchscreen device.

For now, it looks like we should let the unrealistic dream for a touchscreen Mac die. They have a point if you think about it. Imagine your laptop screen filled with greasy fingerprints as you work! That would be very uncomfortable.

The MacBook Air was first released in 2008, so there are a lot of models in the wild that might need their screens replaced. The cost of the repair will depend on the model of the MacBook Air, as well as the problem it is having with its screen. Below I will cover the most common models I see for repair and the cost of repairing each model. I have been repairing MacBook Air screens since the beginning, and after repairing a few thousand screens personally, I can confidently say I am an expert Mac screen repair tech.

How much does it cost to replace a MacBook Air screen? The cost to replace a MacBook Air screen is $299 for most models. The A1466 model is $179, while the A1932 and A1279 models are $299. The A2337 model is $299 for the LCD or $429 for the entire display.

This was the longest-running design for the screen on the MacBook Air. All the different models within these years are compatible with the same LCD panels. The cost seems to be coming down on the screen repairs for these A1369 and A1466 models. The cost to repair the screen on a 2010-2017 MacBook Air is $179. This will cover the LCD panel itself, the labor to install it, and the shipping to get the computer back to you.

Apple finally did a complete rebuild on the MacBook Air in 2018 and created a new model number A1932. The newer model has a redesigned display assembly that utilizes a different LCD panel and overall build than the prior 7 years of MacBook Air models. The cost to repair the screen of a 2018-2019 MacBook Air is $299.

Apple once again created an entirely new model with a completely redesigned screen in 2022 with their M2 MacBook Air. This new model hasn’t been out long enough for us to see what the price will end up being once the LCD panel is available on its own. For now, the cost to replace the full display assembly on the 2022 MacBook Air is $450-$750.

There are multiple parts in a display assembly, and chances are they do not all need to be replaced in order to get your computer fully working again. Knowing the basic parts that are required to complete your MacBook screen repair will help you select the correct repair for your needs.

The LCD panel is the part of the screen that displays the image, it is the part of the screen that you can touch when the computer is open. This is the most commonly broken part on a MacBook Air screen. If you have a cracked screen, there is a very big chance that what you need is an LCD replacement.

The display assembly is the entire top half of the computer. It includes the LCD panel, the back housing where the Apple logo is, the clutch cover along the bottom of the screen where it says “MacBook Air”, the iSight camera, and the hinges. If there are any bends or dents on the corners of your display, you will likely need to replace the entire display assembly.

The clutch cover runs along the bottom of the MacBook screen. It is the part that says “MacBook Air” on it. Sometimes I see clutch covers that are cracked or broken while the LCD panel itself is working fine! This means the computer works perfectly and the entire screen is visible and working, but there is a crack along the bottom of the screen in the part that says “MacBook Air” on it. If this is the issue you have, you just need a clutch cover replacement rather than an LCD replacement.

The MacBook Air camera almost never has an issue. If the camera does stop responding, the issue is almost always with the logic board inside your computer rather than the camera itself. Sometimes though, the cameras will fail and require replacement. Unfortunately with the way these MacBook Airs are assembled, you usually have to replace the LCD panel when you replace the camera.

The back housing is sometimes referred to as the “lid”. It is the part that has the Apple logo on it. Usually, the housing does not need to be replaced, but if there is a dent on the corner of the housing, a dent on the housing itself, or if liquid damage is present in the housing, then you will need the housing replaced as well as the LCD. Again, because of the way these are assembled you normally can’t replace just the housing by itself.

The hinges are exactly what they sound like, the hinge where the display meets the computer. Older model Macs from the 2006-2012 era sometimes had hinges that would crack or break and cause the display to not stay up properly. That is much rarer on the MacBook Airs, but it can happen. Some models require an entire display replacement in order to replace the hinges, while others you can replace separately. Because Apple routes cables through the hinges, you usually have to replace the entire display assembly if you have issues with the hinges.

There are a few different things you should consider when looking for a screen repair on a MacBook Air. There are many shops to choose from nowadays that offer screen repair services for Mac computers. Making a good choice for the screen repair can be the difference between getting an affordable quality repair, and an expensive repair that doesn’t last as long as it should.

Does the shop have a good reputation? Talk to your friends, family, and co-workers to see if they have any good experiences with a particular shop and read online reviews. This will give you an idea of what other people’s experiences have been like with the shop.

Take your time to research and choose a computer repair shop that you feel good about. With a little effort, you can find a great shop that will take care of your MacBook screen repair needs.

TCRS – I have asked for Tim’s help on logic board repairs many times over the past decade. He does not necessarily specialize in screen repair, but his shop is a great choice if you need logic board-level repairs. They are based in SoCal.

As I said, there are thousands to choose from, so do some research on the ones you are interested in and I am sure you can find a good repair shop to complete your MacBook screen repair.

If you have a MacBook Air that is not covered under AppleCare+, you will spend between $450 and $650 repairing your screen through Apple. There are a couple of different ways that the display repair is billed, so the price you are quoted will vary, but these are the standard quotes. Note that each damage tier is added to by a labor charge, which is usually $100. So a Tier 1 repair is usually about $280 for the MacBook Air + a $100 labor charge.

Tier 1 Accidental Damage does not usually cover the display. It is for other parts that might have been accidentally damaged like the touchpad getting cracked or the fingerprint sensor on the keyboard being damaged. Tier one is usually quoted at $280 + a labor charge at the Apple store, although I have heard it quoted as low as $230 +labor.

Tier 2 Accidental Damage does cover the display, as long as everything else on the computer is not damaged. So if there is a dent or any kind of damage on a component other than the display, it can not be repaired under tier 2. Tier 2 repair is usually about $480 +labor at the Apple store.

AppleCare+ does partially cover the cost of repairing a cracked screen on a MacBook Air. When you buy your computer, you are given the option to purchase AppleCare+. If you decide to purchase AppleCare+ and crack your screen, the total for the repair will be $99.

Repair cost through Best Buy is generally the same as through the Apple store. Best Buy usually charges around $450-$650 for MacBook Air screen repair.

Their actual repair capabilities on the store level seem to vary from store to store, but all the Best Buys in my area do not have Mac technicians in the actual store. They do have iPhone technicians and offer screen repair for iPhones (sometimes same-day repairs are available). But for Mac repair, they ship the computer out to be repaired and then have it shipped back to the store after repair.

When they do send a MacBook out for service, they are actually sending it to the same repair depots that the Apple Store does. They quote a marginally higher turnaround time than Apple (about 2 weeks). But generally have the computer back a little quicker than that.

UBreakiFix is not an Apple Authorized Service Provider. I do not know if they offer a genuine Apple screen (they could be utilizing Apple’s new self-repair program as I do for certain repairs), but I do know that their price for the 2020 M1 MacBook Air “starts at 479.99”. In order to get an exact quote, you have to bring your computer in for their free diagnosis.

The MacBook Air LCD replacement process is one that I don’t recommend for a beginner to an intermediate-level technician to attempt. It is best to start practicing with bad screens before moving on to these repairs. They are delicate and you can cause all kinds of problems during the repair by scratching backlight sheets or ripping cables under the LCD panel.

The display assembly replacement is a lot easier and can be completed by somebody with some technical repair experience. Apple has a self-repair program that covers the A2337 model MacBook Air. You can read about the program and get links in my 2020 M1 MacBook Air screen replacement guide.

I will say I have seen a lot of damaged screens when people attempt to repair the LCD panel on a MacBook Air themselves. Normally the damage is not fixable and you have to then replace the entire display assembly. I have a troubleshooting page for the A1466 MacBook Air if you have attempted a repair and ran into problems.

Apple charges between $450 and $650 to replace a MacBook Air screen if it is not under warranty. If you have AppleCare+, the cost to replace the screen through Apple is $99.

This is a great question to discuss with the shop you are thinking of doing the repair. Most of the time the answer is yes, it is worth repairing a MacBook Air screen if the MacBook Air is useful to you. The cost of the repair usually decreases with time, so older MacBook Airs will cost less to repair than newer MacBook Airs.

AppleCare+ generally does not cover a cracked screen completely. Rather it covers all but $99 of the screen replacement service. If there is liquid damage involved, then the charge is $299.

Thanks to the fact that they are made using high-quality construction materials (especially milled aluminum) they feel indestructible in the hand, but those gorgeous retina displays have the potential to pop and spiderweb just like any other screen out there.

In this quick guide we hope to show you about how much you can expect to have to spend on MacBook repair going forward, the total “all in” cost for getting your screen replaced, and your computer back up and running.

The MacBook Pro is a line of Mac laptops made by Apple Inc. Introduced in January 2006, it is the higher-end lineup in the MacBook family, sitting above the consumer-focused MacBook Air. It is currently sold with 13-inch, 14-inch, and 16-inch screens, all using Apple silicon M-series chips.

The Touch Bar MacBook Pro, released in October 2016, adopted USB-C for all data ports and power and included a shallower "butterfly"-mechanism keyboard. On all but the base model, the function keys were replaced with a touchscreen strip called the Touch Bar with a Touch ID sensor integrated into the power button.

A November 2019 revision to the Touch Bar MacBook Pro introduced the Magic Keyboard, which uses a scissor-switch mechanism. The initial 16-inch model with a screen set in narrower bezels was followed by a 13-inch model in May 2020. This revision also modified the Touch Bar, as users were complaining about the ESC key disappearing and not being able to exit a computer window.

Another revision to the Touch Bar MacBook Pro was released in November 2020; it was the first MacBook Pro to feature an Apple-designed system on a chip, the Apple M1.

The 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros were released in October 2021. Powered by either M1 Pro or M1 Max chips, they are the first to be available only with an Apple silicon system on a chip. These models re-introduced MagSafe, function keys, and some other elements that had been removed from the Touch Bar MacBook Pro.

Alongside the redesigned M2 MacBook Air, Apple refreshed the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros with the Apple M2 chip. The model features the same chassis, albeit with changes to the system audio: speakers compatible with Spatial Audio and a headphone jack with support for high-impedance headphones.

The original MacBook Pro used the design of the PowerBook G4, but replaced the PowerPC G4 chips with Intel Core processors,iSight camera, and introduced the MagSafe power connector. The optical drive was shrunk to fit into the slimmer MacBook Pro; it runs slower than the optical drive in the PowerBook G4 and cannot write to dual-layer DVDs.Intel Core 2 Duo processors, and LED-backlit displays, and 17-inch did in 2008.Nvidia Geforce 8600M GT video cards"Penryn" cores while adding multi-touch capabilities to the trackpad.

The unibody-construction MacBook Pro largely follows the styling of the original aluminum iMac and the MacBook Air and is slightly thinner than its predecessor, albeit wider and deeper due to the widescreen display.multi-touch gestures.inertial scrolling was added, making the scrolling experience much like that of the iPhone and iPad.

During the MacWorld Expo keynote on January 6, 2009, Phil Schiller announced a 17-inch MacBook Pro with unibody construction. This version diverged from its 15-inch sibling with an anti-glare "matte" screen option (with the glossy finish standard) and a non user-removable lithium polymer battery.

The Retina models also have fewer user-accessible upgrade or replacement options than previous MacBooks. Unlike the unibody MacBook Pros, the memory is soldered onto the logic board and is therefore not upgradable. The solid state drive is not soldered and can be replaced by users, although it has a proprietary connector and form factor.pentalobe screws and cannot be disassembled with standard tools. While the battery is glued in, recycling companies have stated that the design is only "mildly inconvenient" and does not hamper the recycling process.

On March 9, 2015, the 13-inch model was updated with Intel Broadwell processors, Iris 6100 graphics, faster flash storage (based on PCIe 2.0 × 4 technology), faster RAM (upgraded from 1600MHZ to 1866MHZ), increased battery life (extended to 10 hours), and a Force Touch trackpad.5120 × 2880 displays.

Apple unveiled Touch Bar 13- and 15-inch MacBook Pro models during a press event at their headquarters on October 27, 2016. All models, except for the baseline 13-inch model, featured the Touch Bar, a new multi-touch-enabled OLED strip built into the top of the keyboard in place of the function keys. The Touch Bar is abutted on its right by a sapphire-glass button that doubles as a Touch ID sensor and a power button. The models also introduced a "second-generation" butterfly-mechanism keyboard whose keys have more travel than the first iteration in the Retina MacBook. The 13-inch model has a trackpad that is 46% larger than its predecessor while the 15-inch model has a trackpad twice as large as the Retina models.

Other updates to the MacBook Pro include dual- and quad-core Intel Skylake Core i5 and i7 processors, improved graphics, and displays that offer a 25% wider color gamut, 67% more brightness, and 67% more contrast. All versions can output to a 5K display; the 15-inch models can drive two such displays. The 15-inch models include a discrete Radeon Pro 450, 455 or 460 graphics card in addition to the integrated Intel graphics. The base 13-inch model has function keys instead of the Touch Bar, and just two USB-C ports. The flash storage in the Touch Bar models is soldered to the logic board and is not upgradeable, while in the 13-inch model without Touch Bar, it is removable, but difficult to replace, as it is a proprietary format of SSD storage.

On June 5, 2017, Apple updated the line with Intel Kaby Lake processors and newer graphics cards. A 128 GBCoffee Lake quad-core processors in 13-inch models and six-core processors in 15-inch models, updated graphics cards, third-generation butterfly keyboards that introduced new symbols for the control and option keys, Bluetooth 5, T2 SoC Chip, True Tone display technology, and larger-capacity batteries. The 15-inch model can also be configured with up to 4 TBDDR4 memory and a Core i9 processor.Radeon Pro Vega graphics. On May 21, 2019, Apple announced updated Touch Bar models with newer processors, with an eight-core Core i9 standard for the higher-end 15-inch model, and an updated keyboard manufactured with "new materials" across the line.macOS Catalina added support for Dolby Atmos, Dolby Vision, and HDR10 on 2018 and newer models.Pro Display XDR at full resolution.

The Touch Bar MacBook Pro received mixed reviews. The display, build quality, and audio quality were praised but many complained about the butterfly keyboard; the little-used Touch Bar; and the absence of USB-A ports, HDMI port, and SD card slot.

On May 4, 2020, Apple announced an updated 13-inch model with the Magic Keyboard. The four Thunderbolt port version comes with Ice Lake processors, updated graphics, up to 32 GB of memory and 4 TB of storage, and supports 6K output to run the Pro Display XDR. The two Thunderbolt port version has the same Coffee Lake processors, graphics, and maximum storage and memory as the 2019 two Thunderbolt port models.

On November 10, 2020, Apple introduced a new 13-inch MacBook Pro with two Thunderbolt ports with a brand new Apple M1 processor, directly replacing the previous generation of Intel-based 2020 baseline 13-inch MacBook Pro with two Thunderbolt ports. On October 18, 2021, Apple replaced the high-end 13-inch and 16-inch Intel-based MacBook Pros with 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros,M1 Pro and M1 Max, Apple"s second ARM-based chips and their first professional-focused chips. Apple addressed many criticisms of the Touch Bar MacBook Profunction keys in place of the Touch Bar, an HDMI port,SD card reader, MagSafe charging, and a higher base memory. Other additions include a Liquid Retina XDR display with thinner bezels and an iPhone-like notch, ProMotion variable refresh rate, a 1080p webcam, Wi-Fi 6, 3 Thunderbolt ports, a 6-speaker sound system supporting Dolby Atmos, and support of multiple external displays.

In January 2023, the 14-inch and 16-inch models were updated. The new models come with the Apple M2 Pro and M2 Max, can be configured with up to 96 GB of RAM (up from 64 GB), support HDMI 2.1 that can drive an 8K external display (the 2021 models supported HDMI 2.0), and support faster Wi-Fi 6E.
