Flat-panel displays are thin panels of glass or plastic used for electronically displaying text, images, or video. Liquid crystal displays (LCD), OLED (organic light emitting diode) and microLED displays are not quite the same; since LCD uses a liquid crystal that reacts to an electric current blocking light or allowing it to pass through the panel, whereas OLED/microLED displays consist of electroluminescent organic/inorganic materials that generate light when a current is passed through the material. LCD, OLED and microLED displays are driven using LTPS, IGZO, LTPO, and A-Si TFT transistor technologies as their backplane using ITO to supply current to the transistors and in turn to the liquid crystal or electroluminescent material. Segment and passive OLED and LCD displays do not use a backplane but use indium tin oxide (ITO), a transparent conductive material, to pass current to the electroluminescent material or liquid crystal. In LCDs, there is an even layer of liquid crystal throughout the panel whereas an OLED display has the electroluminescent material only where it is meant to light up. OLEDs, LCDs and microLEDs can be made flexible and transparent, but LCDs require a backlight because they cannot emit light on their own like OLEDs and microLEDs.

Liquid-crystal display (or LCD) is a thin, flat panel used for electronically displaying information such as text, images, and moving pictures. They are usually made of glass but they can also be made out of plastic. Some manufacturers make transparent LCD panels and special sequential color segment LCDs that have higher than usual refresh rates and an RGB backlight. The backlight is synchronized with the display so that the colors will show up as needed. The list of LCD manufacturers:

Organic light emitting diode (or OLED displays) is a thin, flat panel made of glass or plastic used for electronically displaying information such as text, images, and moving pictures. OLED panels can also take the shape of a light panel, where red, green and blue light emitting materials are stacked to create a white light panel. OLED displays can also be made transparent and/or flexible and these transparent panels are available on the market and are widely used in smartphones with under-display optical fingerprint sensors. LCD and OLED displays are available in different shapes, the most prominent of which is a circular display, which is used in smartwatches. The list of OLED display manufacturers:

MicroLED displays is an emerging flat-panel display technology consisting of arrays of microscopic LEDs forming the individual pixel elements. Like OLED, microLED offers infinite contrast ratio, but unlike OLED, microLED is immune to screen burn-in, and consumes less power while having higher light output, as it uses LEDs instead of organic electroluminescent materials, The list of MicroLED display manufacturers:

LCDs are made in a glass substrate. For OLED, the substrate can also be plastic. The size of the substrates are specified in generations, with each generation using a larger substrate. For example, a 4th generation substrate is larger in size than a 3rd generation substrate. A larger substrate allows for more panels to be cut from a single substrate, or for larger panels to be made, akin to increasing wafer sizes in the semiconductor industry.

Sharp’s next-generation 120-inch display with an 8K resolution will be the pinnacle of the company’s (and the industry’s) LCD technology as previously screens of this size used other types of panels. Sharp does not disclose refresh rate of the giant monitor or its peak brightness, but we do know that Sharp"s 2nd Generation commercial 8K UHDTVs featured a 100/120 Hz refresh rate as well as 400 - 1000 nits brighness for SDR and HDR content, respectively. Whether this one will or not will depend on its manufacturing feasibility and commercial potential.

Sharp has something big in store for next week’s annual IFA trade show in Berlin. Just how big? Well, the company plans to unveil its latest 8K LCD TV at the event, an 120-inch monster it claims is the world’s largest.

The electronic company teased the big reveal in a press release earlier this week, calling the TV the “world’s largest liquid crystal display monitor.” But the massive LCD panel isn’t the only noteworthy feature TV has to offer; it will also have embedded 5G connectivity.

Of course, it’s important to pay attention to the wording of the company’s announcement—“world’s largest [LCD] monitor.” There are bigger TVs out there—specifically Samsung’s 292-inch The Wall Luxury—but those utilize MicroLED rather than LCD, as Digital Trends points out. Whereas those TVs achieve their size by combining multiple individual panels and scaling up the image, Sharp’s new TV consists of a single, backlit, LCD panel. For the time being, at least, it is the very biggest in its class.

There’s no information currently available about pricing, but expect the TV, if it’s made available to consumers, to cost a pretty penny. The closest comparison on the market is Sony’s 98-inch 8K LCD TV, which went on sale earlier this year for $70,000.

Although on the lowest end of the ALR spectrum, it is still a considerable cost when you can buy a lower end 4k LCD with HDR at 40-49 inches for the same cost. this is just a screen. literally, a screen. its 100+ inches (102 if you don"t use the included velvet) but its still a glorified screen.

This is an outstanding product. I buy from online and in person retailers all the time. I would even consider myself somewhat of a tech junkie, though my budgets keep my habits somewhat in the realm of affordability. This screen performs exceptionally in every area i hoped it would, and then some.

I opened the manual to see if i needed to do anything different than the very obvious when putting it together and I"m pleased that the answer was "nope". The manual was easily understood and had a clear English section however, in case you couldn"t figure any part out. the only thing i could see that would even throw anyone off would be the center support beam. Something to note, as it is installed with its top and bottom hole attached to a different kind of screw then the rest of the unit. it has a head that goes inside the inner rail on the backside of the screen. If i didn"t look in the instructions, i might think it was missing something needed to install it, so if your reading this just take note of that, i read several reviews of people knocking down a star because the center support beam "didn"t fit". i honestly think there"s a more than good chance half of those people (prob all of them honestly) just didn"t read how to actually install that section in the manual that is clearly shown. the screen attaches around the frame via Velcro. As a drummer i noticed the attachment pattern was very similar to that of a drum head, you always tighten the opposite side first and move around the frame in a pattern to easily and even tightened the screen around the back. I noticed that many of the high end companies that sell similar screens tend to attach the screen to the frame with eyelets. either snap in, or tension band attachment. for those of you concerned about the Velcro, i wouldn"t be, "this sucker ain"t goin" no where". Once its attached. and after thinking about it, Velcro is the obvious choice because if the screen de-tensions over time, re tension of the screen is easily done here...MUCH harder if the screen had attachment holes in the actual screen material, so i say "great choice". The wall mounts are more than adequate and come with screws for both going into a wall stud, or going into drywall safely. The screen rests on the wall mounts in a channel at the top of the frames back, so once its up, it can easily slide left and right for finer tuning placement in those directions, sorry but no up and down adjustment, in my opinion though that adjustment is completely unneeded.

The screen itself took a little time to get perfect when attaching it to the frame, but no more than expected really. Once on the wall you realize "DANG, that is a BIG screen". the room i put it in is about 16 by 25 but you cant appreciate how huge a screen that"s nearly 8 feet wide or bigger is until you are actually physically looking at it. I"m totally convinced that if these ALR screens were more commercially marketed with mid level projectors, that they would actually out sell regular televisions, even 4k models. for right around two grand US, you can truly achieve a mind blowing picture at an even more mind blowing size.

Pairing my screen (ALR cinegrey 3d) with the Epson 3500 in a somewhat well lit room with a pretty standard ambient day room light almost made me pee myself. i was hoping beyond hope that the projector technology had improved from what i had seen years ago and would look acceptable in a somewhat well lit room (pictures to follow in the next few days)...it isn"t just acceptable, it is absolutely fantastic, and envy inducing to anyone that doesn"t have this kind of setup that sees it and likes "big". when the lights lower, and at night, it is breathtaking. i actually use this as my main computer monitor and i am more than pleased to say it looks better than my "old" 65 inch led. I can tell you too, that it isn"t just the solid projector I"m using designed for rooms with more ambient light, but the screen as well. in fact, i would give a heavier visual "WOW" to the screen than i would to the actual projector which is outstanding too.

What you have in the end is an absolute no brainer buy for anyone who is looking for a fixed frame projector screen. is the black diamond better? the high end Draper better? only until you compare cost to the elite screens, then those screens go from being slightly visually better to being WAY, WAY worse because they are thousands more. If your on the fence, don"t take my word for it, get it yourself, THEN feel free to thank me if this review helped you at all.

If the 55-inch 4K TV in your den is starting to look too small, Sharp wants you to know something to the tune of 120 inches is coming. On Wednesday, the company announced it plans to showcase the world"s largest 8K LCD TV at the upcoming IFA trade show in Berlin, Germany, which starts on September 6th. For those who are wondering, the world"s biggest 8K TV is actually Samsung"s 292-inch The Wall Luxury, but that"s based on MicroLED instead of LCD.

Other than the fact its new TV will feature a 120-inch LCD panel, Sharp doesn"t provide too many details about its new display. One interesting tidbit is that it will feature 5G connectivity — ostensibly because in 2019 every new device must somehow include 5G.

In all seriousness, Sharp says the combination of 8K and 5G support makes its new TV the ideal tool for displaying works of art. The company envisions a scenario in which art historians will use the device to carry out restorations remotely. Of course, how cash-strapped art institutions will afford the world"s biggest 8K LCD TV isn"t something Sharp answers.

There"s a long tradition of TV manufacturers using trade shows to hawk pie in the sky TV concepts. CES, in particular, is famous for this. In 2018, for example, LG brought a prototype rollable OLED TV to Las Vegas. One year later, the company said it plans to release the TV before the end of 2019. All of that is to say, there"s the possibility Sharp"s new TV could eventually make its way to consumers. Just be prepared to pay a hefty price for it: Sony"s 98-inch 8K LCD TV from earlier this year is asking for $70,000.

Update 8/29/19 3:14AM ET: This article has been corrected to reflect that Sharp is claiming this to be the world"s biggest 8K LCD TV, instead of the world"s biggest 8K TV.

July 2, 2012 — Liquid crystal display (LCD) panel makers have added new display features — high color gamut, 3D, LED backlight, slim type, ultra-slim bezel, 120 Hz/240 Hz/480 Hz frame rate driving, fast response time, high brightness — with varying success in driving TV demand.

Instead of “spec up,” more and more end users are looking to “spec down” for budgetary reasons. Lower but acceptable panel brightness now prevails, as it helps to reduce backlight cost. Meanwhile, as analyzed in the May 09, 2012 DisplaySearch Monitor article “Direct LED TV Selling Better than Edge LED TV,” the cost effective direct type LED-backlight LCD TV is doing well in sell-through results. While its form factor is not slim, some end users care more about how an ultra-slim bezel looks from the front.

For all these reasons, LCD TV panel and set makers are wondering what new features will add value for end users and motivate another replacement cycle.

Many people believe that ultra-high 3840 × 2160 definition (UHD or UD), also known as 4K×2K, will be a meaningful value-added feature on next-generation TV displays. 4K×2K has 4x as many pixels as full high definition (FHD, 1920 × 1080), which is the current prevailing resolution for LCD TV panels.

Smart phones and tablet PCs prove that the higher the resolution, the better for end users. These very high definition devices set consumer expectations for televisions. Because LCD TVs are still mainly used for watching rather than interaction or content creation, consumers will perceive very high resolution as a direct benefit to viewing, unlike other new features (such as smart, connected, or 3D TV and LED backlights).

The best quality video is recognized as vivid with no difference between reality and screen, and the higher the resolution, the more vivid the content. 3D technology halves resolution on LCD TVs. On 4K×2K LCD TVs, the impact of the downgrade in resolution when watching 3D content is not as severe. With 4K×2K, even after the 3D downgrade, the resolution is full HD, falling from 3840 × 2160 to 1920 × 1080.

For ultra-large LCD TVs, such as 60-80”, pixels are so big that they are visible in FHD. Therefore 4K×2K is recognized as necessary on very large TVs.

4K×2K LCD TV panels are a big challenge for TFT LCD process yield rate and stability. In the current TFT LCD process, the yield rate and reliability of HD and FHD do differ much. However, when the pixel count quadruples, the yield rate will fall significantly. Meanwhile, the higher resolution means panel transmittance will be reduced because there are more pixels on the substrate. As analyzed in the TFT LCD Process Roadmap Report, there are many new technologies needed for this kind of ultra-high definition:

The market outlook for 4K×2K is still unclear due to TV broadcasting bandwidth limitations. Despite this, LCD TV panel makers have developed many 4K×2K panels.

AUO is currently the only panel maker that has commercialized a 4K×2K product. The product is a 55” 4K×2K LCD TV with glasses-free 3D and a powerful video driving engine (Toshiba’s REGZA), shown below.

There’s also a face tracking feature, which should assist users who choose to video chat in high resolution. It’s said that LGE and Vizio are also interested in launching a 4K×2K LCD TV in the North America market later this year.
