If this sounds like something right up your alley, here are five places you can reach out for computer electronics recycling:Public Recycling CentersMany recycling centers will accept almost any kind of electronic equipment as long as they can find someone to reuse or refurbish the item and make a profit from doing so. They also offer recycling services for car batteries, CFL light bulbs (energy-efficient fluorescent lights), rechargeable batteries, mobile devices like laptops and tablets.What makes these programs great is that they are free and relatively easy to use.If you bring your items into one of these stores, a representative will usually be on hand to help you with the process. They may ask for some information from the devices themselves such as make or model number which allows them to ensure they can recycle it properly. In addition, most retail store programs do not require any paperwork, identification cards, or proof of purchase in order to drop off an item. However, keep in mind that these types of programs typically have limits on what they accept so researching beforehand is always a good idea if there’s something specific you want to be recycled.

Motor oil is limited to 10 gallons per household per month and must come in a container that can be left at the site. The container must be no larger than 5 gallons and must be clean and free of debris.

The rate of new technology in the last 20 years has created millions of obsolete computers and other electronics (e-waste).  Because these devices often contain contaminants such as lead and mercury, Colorado law requires that residential and business electronics recycle all electronics.  Dumping electronics in landfills has been banned in Colorado.  Business are prohibited from dumping electronics by EPA regulation.

The continued high demand for a cheaper, and faster computer has given the ability to upgrade every 2-3 years. This, creating a whole lot of unwanted older computers and electronic equipment. With businesses and home users needing the newest computer to run the latest games and software, this creates a growing need for proper disposal of obsolete equipment. Past estimates have shown that as low as 10% of obsolete computers have been properly recycled. The rest have ended up in landfills, storage, burned in incinerators, and in third world counties that have no modern means or education to properly handle the material. This material often ending up in untrained hands to be taken apart under hazardous conditions.

To get control of e-waste, many states have begun enforcing regulations for electronics that could cost a violator thousands of dollars for each device disposed of improperly.  Even if you were being a kind and gave your computer to charity or to a friend, you could still be held responsible if your device ends up in a landfill.

Please note: residents, businesses and haulers are limited to recycling ten (10) televisions and/or computer monitors (including “all-in-one” computers) per calendar year. This limit does not apply to tablets and laptops. Once the recycling limit is reached, residents and businesses may dispose of additional televisions and monitors as regular solid waste, charged at the same rate.

This law, which was passed last year by the Colorado General Assembly, was designed to help save the environment and generate new jobs. It’s expected to create an infrastructure for the disposal of electronic waste.

It’s illegal to throw away your discarded electronics in Colorado; there are many electronic-waste recycling facilities and programs operating throughout the state—from thrift stores to retailers, many places will accept these devices for free.

“There are a lot of retailers that are offering recycling now,” said Wolfgang Kray, an environmental-protection specialist with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, “A bunch of places that sell electronics are already offering recycling for free.” Kray says that “Most electronics that are being recycled are smelted down and being made into components [for] new electronics.”

For example, Best Buy and Staples will recycle your electronics for free.  Private businesses like Metech Recycling charge a fee for the service. Metech’s Senior Vice President of Compliance, Quality, and Sustainability, Mary Jo Lockbaum, says, “The amount of labor involved in getting materials out of electronics is quite significant.”

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, electronics contain hazardous materials that could be harmful to our health and to the environment when they aren’t properly disposed of. Handling e-waste in a responsible and ethical way can be extremely expensive.
