On my Macbook Pro A1150, screen suddenly went blank / black. Power off and on, and the screen flickers on, then goes blank. Otherwise, powers up successfully. What do I need to replace or fix? How?
OK, it took me six days to find an external monitor. I had tried on my flat-panel TV, but received error, "invalid format." Now, on an old flat-panel Dell monitor, two part answer, but bottom line is, external screen SEEMS TO WORK. However, in Mac mode, comes up obviously in wrong video mode and no way (none apparent to me) to adjust that. In Windows mode (Boot Camp), Windows XP comes up can read screen fine, then switches and error says "cannot read this mode" (paraphrase, forget the quote).

Start up laptop. Use camera to log me in, so I have not touched the keyboard or touchpad. No flickering until you touch the keyboard. Flickers a few times, then goes black. Touching keyboard will bring up the normal screen for a few seconds, then back to black. Hold down power button and wait for it to shut off. Hold down power button so that it starts up, again. It will now boot up without the problem. At all. Will now run forever without any problems until you shut down. Then upon startup you will have the same problem. This problem first started about a month ago. I cannot link it to any new hardware or software update.
What have I done to diagnose? Went into Device Manager and updated drivers (keyboard, touchpad, monitor, graphics card). Went to various manufacturers" websites and got driver update tools and used them. Updated Windows. Recovered windows (a short, easy process). Reinstalled windows (lengthy complete redo of windows). Check my anti-virus. Brought it to the local tech shop for analysis. They were able to recreate the problem but could not fix. I ran the HP diagnostics. The Windows diagnostics. This cannot be a hardware issue because I can temporarily fix by powering down and powering up.
Screen flickering in Windows 11 is usually caused by a display driver issue or incompatible app. To determine whether a display driver or app is causing the problem, check to see if Task Manager flickers. I dont understand why the screen-flickering-and-then-turning-black-after-being-awakened-from-sleep issue just happened after three years -- or why it resulted in my not being able to turn off the computer unless I unplugged it. I"m always interested in WHY things change. But I"m so computer-illiterate that I wouldnt be able to figure this one out. I"m just appreciative that it"s been resolved. Thanks again!
Edited again to add that I did find some reports of this flicker after Firefox upgrades but the problems and solutions are written in computerese and I dont understand even the three-letter words.

Once we have by-passed the LED, we can power the TV on. Careful! High voltage (200-300v) runs through the TV when plug, so be very careful how you handle it so you don’t electrify yourself!
Now we just need to unplug the TV, replace the LED with a new one and put everything back together. Just to be sure, we should power the TV back on and check that everything is fine.
There might be a lot of other root causes for similar symptoms, a black screen often looks like something very serious and therefore expensive to repair, but this case is the perfect example that taking some time to look for the root cause can sometime lead to a good surprise: here a 1$ fix!

5. Check if the signal cable (VGA / DVI / HDMI / DisplayPort / USB ) is connected well, and confirmed another end of the output cable has been firmly connected to computer input port (graphics card). Unplug and plug 2-terminals again and make sure all the pins aren"t bent.
