I tend to think that the problem may be with your graphics card (If you have one) or with the motherboard if you are using integrated graphics. Ever had your TV showing nothing but a black screen even if the audio was working? Unfortunately, that’s a common issue with low/middle-end LCD/LED TVs these days… Even more frustrating, this issue often comes from a rather tiny and cheap component that can be easily replaced. Most common issues are:

The first step into repair is to find the root cause of the issue. As backlight failure is a very common issue, this is the first thing to test. To do so, the easiest way is to power on your screen, put a flashlight very close to it and check if you can see the image through. The image would be very dark, like turning the brightness of the screen very very low.

That implies disassembling the TV to access the backlight which is between the LCD screen in the front and the boards in the rear. In my case, with a Samsung F5000, I had to process as follows:

Once we have by-passed the LED, we can power the TV on. Careful! High voltage (200-300v) runs through the TV when plug, so be very careful how you handle it so you don’t electrify yourself!

Now we just need to unplug the TV, replace the LED with a new one and put everything back together. Just to be sure, we should power the TV back on and check that everything is fine.

I thought maybe it was the 4K tv glitching, or backlight turning off, then this evening I put a hand held bug zapper on my desk near the TV to take out some small annoying pests. One made it in the zapper and ZAP! the screen blacked out.

I then opened Plex (An application) on the TV, as it doesn"t use a HDMI signal. Arced the zapper a couple more times, and nothing! No response from the TV.

As of yet I have a better HDMI cable on order and ferrite chokes, so I have not resolved my issue as of this moment, but that would be my conclusion from my bug zapper causing interference and from what I"ve seen on this thread!

The Apple  24 inch LED Cinema display  and the Apple thunderbolt display have been a  source of frustration for many people.   They flickers, go black, the screens gets garbage on them, the fans turn on and off.   After reading lots of forums and trying various things I have practically completely eliminated all the flickering on my  24 inch LED Cinema display,  here is how.

It’s  had a problem with flickering ever since I first got it back in 2009.  It started off that once a day or so it just went black for five seconds.   At other times  the  screen is completely filled with gobbledygook  until I sleep the display and restart it.   At other times the screen just flickers black for a fraction of a second,  but all the fans  in the screen power down and then power up again.  Apple have released various ‘fixes’  to the problem over the years which have never fully resolved  the problem. Phone calls to Apple support were of no use after the first year because they just claimed it was a hardware problem and ‘out of warranty.’  The flickering got extremely bad recently with ‘El Capitan’   and the flickering also got worse when I connected a Pegasus Thunderbolt hard drive.

Try unplugging and plugging the thunderbolt connector or Apple display port connector,  sometimes the problem can be worse if the connect is not in tightly.

If  you are having really bad problems, make a corner of your screen a hot corner to put your display to sleep.  sometimes my computer is blinking so badly the screen goes crazy and I can’t see anything,  I can’t even see the menus to ‘ restart’  the computer.  But if I move my mouse to the ‘hot corner’  to sleep the display, and then wake the display up again sometimes the problem goes away.

Crazy as it sounds,  wrapping my thunderbolt cable in aluminium foil was the biggest help of anything.  I looped up the excess thunderbolt cable into a circle and put aluminium foil around it to shield it.

Here I have activated the bottom left hot corner so that it puts the display to sleep. When things get really bad I can put the display to sleep with my mouse without having to see what’s happening on the screen. Then I can wake it up again with my spacebar and more often than not the problem has fixed itself temporarily.

Setting up a Hot Corner and choosing “Prevent Sleep” as the Hot Corner configuration, then remembering to throw the mouse cursor into that corner, will prevent sleep when used.

Though this issue persists with modern macOS versions (including macOS Big Sur 11.4, macOS Big Sur 11.5, and macOS Monterey for some users), installing the latest available macOS system software updates may resolve the problem eventually, particularly if it’s a bug that Apple has fixed.

A previous issue with the M1 Mac Mini having issues with displays not waking from sleep was apparently fixed with macOS Big Sur 11.3, but some users still experience the problem with later macOS versions, or variations of the issue (flickering screens, white noise, monitor stuck on black, etc), and with other M1 Mac models.

For example, some users may have problems with a cheap USB-C to HDMI dongle, but find that another higher quality USB-C to HDMI adapter may work fine, or if HDMI is not working then a USB-C to DisplayPort cable may work.

I was able to completely fix my flickering external display and noisy external display on a M1 MacBook Pro by switching from HDMI with a dongle to a Warky USB-C to DisplayPort cable that’s compatible with my external display. Anecdotal, but it’s something to consider, especially if the temporary fixes like unplugging and plugging the cable back in are getting to be annoying.

However, if you know the display cables are working with another device at 60hz, you can typically manually change the refresh rate on a Mac display with these instructions. You can also check refresh rate in use on the display as discussed here. A 30hz refresh rate is usually fairly obvious and not subtle, as the mouse cursor is typically choppy, as are dragging windows around on screen, and playing games or watching movies is choppy too.
