Lately I have been scanning a lot of Quick Response (QR) codes required because of government check-in/out during the COVID pandemic. I was curious to understand what this barcode was and whether it was feasible to generate one using simple MCU hardware and display it on an ePaper display.
QR codes were invented in 1994 by the Japanese automotive company Denso Wave (who still retain the trademark) to track vehicles during manufacturing and allow high-speed component scanning.
Because it could be read quickly and could contain more information than a standard UPC (one dimensional) barcode, it quickly became popular outside the automotive industry . The advent of cameras on consumer devices like mobile phones helped to further spread QR codes as convenient a method of encoding and accessing information.
A QR code can encode just over 4000 alphanumeric characters in a square grid of black squares arranged on a white background. This makes them relatively easily recognized by an imaging device such as a camera. The data is extracted from patterns that are present in the horizontal and vertical components of the image. The pattern encodes data using Reed-Solomon error correction code and up to 30% of the message can be reconstructed using this encoding.
The Arduino qrcode library by Richard Moore is a derivation from a code base maintained by Project Nayuki, who seems to have a real passion for these codes.
The library was able to convert arbitrary data into a QR code on an Arduino Uno much faster than I had expected, given how complex the task actually is. The generated data is stored in an internal data structure and accessed through the class interface.
The next step was to display this data on an ePaper display. I already owned a WaveShare 2.9″ ePaper display. This display uses an SPI-like interface (CLK, DATA, SELECT) for communications and has a resolution of 128 by 296 monochrome pixels. My version runs on 3.3V and needs a level converter between the Arduino Uno I/O pins and the display. More recent versions (labelled v2) have a converter built into the display.
The library I used for the ePaper display is GxEPD2, which works with many different type of modules and uses the Adafruit GFx libraries to generate text fonts and graphics.
The sketch became a matter of ‘gluing’ the two libraries together. I decided to allow the user message to be encoded to be typed at the serial monitor to make it easier to test different messages.
The core code for the sketch used can be found below, excluding the standard hardware selection header for GxEPD2 (GxEPD2_display_selection.h) which follows the template in the library examples, and will depend on your specific hardware.
