The best screen capture software makes it really easy to show how things work—or, if you"re filing a support ticket, how they don"t work. But different people are going to be looking for different things. In our research, we tested several dozen apps, ranging from minimalistic three-button windows to complex apps overflowing with tools. The options are priced from free all the way up to several hundreds of dollars. Each of our picks for best screen recorder app offers a unique feature, but they all meet some basic criteria:The ability to record your whole screen, one window/app, or a specific area

Of course, the process doesn"t end with the screen recording. The quality of the final product can make or break user engagement, so we also considered the post-capture editing features.

One thing to note: It"s possible that an app you already use has screen recording built in. Many video conferencing, communication, and productivity tools—not to mention your mobile phone—have added screen recording to their feature sets, so it"s worth checking if you can get the capabilities you need from a tool that"s already in your stack.

If you want to quickly record something and share a link, give Loom a chance. Loom isn"t overly complicated when it"s time to record: you can choose whether you want to record just your screen, your screen with webcam video, or just your webcam. Once you finish, your video will be uploaded to Loom. You can do some basic editing in the browser, if you want, or you can copy the link to share the video. It"s all very quick, which makes it, overall, the best screen recorder for PC.

With the free version of Loom, you can store up to 25 videos of up to five minutes each. It"s limited, sure, but great for quickly showing something to a collaborator, coworker, and/or archenemy. And you can always download your videos and store them somewhere else if you"re getting close to that 25 video threshold.

Having said that, Loom isn"t perfect. The desktop app works well, but we found the mobile apps limited in confusing ways. The Android version, for example, requires users to enter their Google password in order to log in instead of using the built-in Android support for Google accounts, which is odd. The iPhone and iPad apps can"t combine video with screencasting.

Dropbox Capture (which has been in beta for a bit) is a solid Loom alternative, so be sure to check it out if you"re already paying for Dropbox and need an app for recording your screen. Or, if you prefer Chrome extensions to desktop apps, Check out Screencastify, which is similar to Loom.

The Camtasia video capture interface is straightforward and no-nonsense. You choose your capture area, whether or not to include webcam and microphone inputs, and click Record.

Its built-in video editor is a different story. There"s an exhaustive list of editing options that manage not to feel overwhelming. Click-and-drag effects and a decent selection of stock media are located along the left-hand side of the app, with detailed properties and customizations appearing on the right-hand side whenever you select an element from the timeline.

Camtasia provides outstanding tutorial videos for anyone that struggles with its editing tools. Creating surprisingly professional intro and outro segments and dropping them into our test video took a matter of seconds. Our only hiccup was with the interactivity features, which allow you to add quizzes or clickable buttons to your project. Configuring these elements was easy enough, but previewing the video and exporting the final product was noticeably more complicated after adding interactivity.

This is also the only app we tested with a closed captions tool that loops audio while you add the text. A four-second segment plays until you"re done typing, and then you can press Tab, and it plays the next loop.

Note: if you don"t need editing but like the look of Camtasia, Capture (formerly King) comes from the same company, only offers screen recording, and it"s free to download and use.

OBS is a screen record app that"s mostly built with live streaming in mind—if you"ve ever watched someone play games on Twitch, for example, they were probably using OBS. But you can also use it to record videos (it"s by far the most robust tool for doing so), and it"s free, so it"s a great choice if you"re looking for Camtasia alternatives.

Most of the apps in this list let you record using a webcam and your display. OBS Studio can go much, much beyond that. It"s a complete tool for broadcasting, meaning you can add as many displays and cameras as your computer can handle. You can also create customizable "studios," preset audio and video configurations that you can cycle through during a recording.

We created three studios during our test (shown above): one for just the primary display and webcam, another for the secondary display and webcam, and a third for both displays and the webcam. Sizing and positioning elements within each studio is a simple click-and-drag affair, and cycling through them during a recording session is controlled with a hotkey.

With enough preparation, these audio and video presets eliminate the need to fuss with any settings while streaming live video via OBS"s robust integrations. There are 80 platforms in the live streaming menu, ranging from big-name sites like Facebook, YouTube, and Twitch, to obscure streaming platforms like Pandora TV. Opening the Settings menu and pasting your stream key into the text box is all it takes to set up the one-click Start Streaming button on the main dashboard. Changes you make to a studio, such as sound mixing or webcam placement, are broadcast live—make sure you"re ready.

Movavi Screen Recorder is a great mid-level screen recorder for PC, a nice OBS alternative, complete with a built-in editor that gets the job done. But there is one feature it does exceptionally well: scheduled captures.

This tool lets you record webinars or live streams while you"re away from your desk. You"ll find this feature in the preferences, under Scheduler. You can set a time limit for the next recording, or you could specify a time for a recording to begin and end. You can even set it up so your computer shuts down or goes to sleep after the capture is finished.

It"s convenient and unambiguous, further improved by Movavi"s above-average resolution settings. If you need to record an inconveniently-timed webinar to share with others, you"ll want it to look good.

Movavi pricing: $57.95 for a one-computer lifetime license. There"s a free version, but it adds a large hideous watermark to the center of every video, so it"s really only useful for getting a feel for the software.

Sometimes you just want to quickly make a recording and send it to someone, without having to edit anything or mess around with a bunch of settings. Zappy is perfect for this. This app is triggered using a keyboard shortcut, or using the menu bar icon. Select which portion of the screen you want to record, hit the video camera button, then hit stop when you"re done. You can record a voiceover using your microphone, if you want, and you have the option of recording your face on the webcam too.

If you"re a paid Zapier user, the recording will be uploaded to the cloud and a link copied to your clipboard. If not, you can grab the video file locally and share it however you like. You won"t find a lot in the way of settings, and there"s no editing capability, but you can add arrows, boxes, basic text, and obfuscation while you"re recording (or after the fact for a screenshot). It"s just a fast way to share something.

Cards on the table: this is Zapier"s app. Zapier built Zappy for internal use, basically because the team couldn"t find a tool that worked quite the way they wanted. They thought people might find it useful, so they released it to the public.

Zappy pricing: Free for local recordings and screenshots. Paid Zapier accounts can automatically upload all recordings to the cloud (Zapier subscriptions start at $19.99/month).

The best screen recording app is the one that saves you the most time and produces the most worthwhile content for your audience. Make sure you know your target audience and use case before selecting an app. All the video recording software options we"ve listed are either free or come with trial versions, so give your top contenders a whirl, and see which you like best.

Performance tests are conducted using specific computer systems and reflect the approximate performance of Mac Studio.

How long will your LED display last? In nearly every industry, from retail businesses to concert halls to corporate centers, decision makers need to evaluate the return on investment (ROI) of their LED signage. In most cases, potential buyers go straight to the obvious place: the LED manufacturer’s spec sheet. The industry standard for LED lifespan is 100,000 hours, or about 10 years, and most people assume that’s how long their display will last. But it’s not quite that simple.

The 100,000-hour figure assumes that every diode will be running at full brightness, consistently — which, on an LED screen, is virtually never the case. The lifespan figure can also be misleading because it indicates when a diode degrades to half-brightness, not completely dark. Many other variables affect an LED display’s lifespan; you can’t rely solely on the number on the diode spec sheet.

“The reality is, your screen can often last significantly longer than 100,000 hours,” says Kevin Izatt, a senior product manager in Samsung’s Display division. “We’ve had displays that have been up for 15-plus years with more than adequate brightness. Because the diode is actually only one factor in the lifespan of your LED display.”

The biggest contributor to diode degradation is heat. As you increase a diode’s brightness, it produces more heat. Your display’s physical environment also contributes to the temperature of the diodes, especially for outdoor displays.

“Let’s say you’re in Vegas — Death Valley. The diode is fine to operate at those temperatures, but it will degrade faster,” says Izatt. “Temperature is a big factor — and not one you have control over.”

The quality of your display’s power supply — and how hard it drives the diodes — can have a significant impact on your screen’s lifespan. The other components being powered, such as fans and electrical components, have their own lifespans as well, which are also impacted by the power supply.

“Fans are mechanical; they break down,” explains Izatt. “And similar to your computer, the electrical components don’t last forever. Together, these factors all contribute to the lifespan of an LED display. Looking at just the diode lifespan doesn’t give you the complete story — almost always, another part will go out first.”

“Something like airflow is very important,” says Izatt. “You need a screen that has good cooling, and a design that allows heat to flow out of the back through vents.”

It’s easy to see why: The circuit boards powering the display release heat, and that heat needs to go somewhere. Without a strong design, thermal stress will degrade the life of the display, except for the highest-quality parts — optimal conditions notwithstanding.

“Lots of variations on the color and brightness you use will impact the life of the diode,” explains Izatt. “For instance, black doesn’t use any of the diodes at all. And if your content is using lots of gray, that’s a much lower power output than white.”

That’s not to say you should hold back on displaying rich, vibrant colors — after all, that’s what LED does best. But it does factor into your product’s life expectancy.

To help businesses transition from LCD to longer-lasting LED signage, Samsung has launched a trade-in program. Samsung will come on site to remove your existing display and provide a discount on a new LED bundle kit.

Traded-in LCD displays that are still operating will be refurbished and resold, and your business will receive a cash rebate. Nonworking displays will be recycled and their parts reused.

You can’t rely on the number on the diode spec sheet; the lifespan of your LED display depends on many more factors. “Overall quality has a tremendous impact on the life of the display that diode specs just don’t take into account,” says Izatt. Your best bet is to look at the purchase holistically and invest in a top-tier product.

Use the Xbox Game Bar with your keyboard and a screen reader to record a video clip of your favorite game or app, for example, if you find a usability issue with it and want to show the problem to the developer. An exception exists for catering club licensees, which may sell alcohol to non-members as part of a” catered event.” A “catered event” is one involving the furnishing of alcohol, to be served with food prepared on the premises or brought onto the premises already prepared, for accommodation of groups of non-members who are using the club’s facilities by prior arrangement, made at least 24 hours in advance of the function, and which is paid for by the non-members. A licensed club cannot self-sponsor a catered event; the catered event must be arranged by a third party.

Distributor (D) licenses (commonly held by neighborhood beer distributors) allow for the sale of malt and brewed beverages (beer) for off-premises consumption only. Distributors are authorized to sell beer in any package configuration to an unlicensed customer.  These sales do not have to be in manufacturer’s original configuration (i.e., sales of cases, 12-packs, six-packs and single bottle are permitted) and can be sold in refillable and resealable growlers for off-premises consumption.  Distributors may also sell beer in original containers containing 128 ounces or more (e.g., kegs).

Importing distributor (ID) licenses have all the same privileges as a distributor license, but they primarily serve as wholesalers, selling beer to distributors and retail licensees for resale.  Breweries assign specific geographic rights to sell their brands within the Commonwealth to specific importing distributors through what is commonly referred to as a “territorial agreement.”

D and ID licensees may sell and/or deliver beer between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. of any day, except Sunday, to unlicensed persons. If the licensee applies for and obtains a Sunday Sales Permit, it may sell beer to unlicensed persons and holders of Special Occasion Permits on Sundays between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m.

The primary purpose of the eating place (E) retail dispenser license is the regular and customary preparation and service of food to the public. The licensed area within the establishment must be no less than 300 square feet, equipped with tables and seating, and sufficient food, to accommodate at least 30 patrons at once.  The establishment must have a functioning kitchen or food preparation area, and it must have a current and valid health license issued by the governing municipal authority.

E licensees are only permitted to sell and serve malt and brewed beverages (beer) and may not sell liquor (wine or spirits) for on or off-premises consumption.  They may sell up to 192 fl. oz. of beer in a single transaction for off-premises consumption.  Licensees may sell beer between 7:00 a.m. and 2:00 a.m. of the following day on Monday through Saturday.  If the licensee applies for and obtains a Sunday Sales Permit, it may sell beer from 11:00 a.m. on Sunday until 2:00 a.m. on Monday, but may start as early as 9:00 a.m. if it offers a “meal” as defined in the Liquor Code.  No sales or service of beer can take place after 2:00 a.m., and all unfinished beer must be collected and all patrons must depart the licensed premises by 2:30 a.m. (although patrons may stay past 2:30 a.m. if the establishment also holds an Extended Hours Food Permit).

A restaurant (R) licensed establishment, as defined in the Liquor Code, is to be habitually and principally used in the preparation and service of food to the public. The licensed area within the establishment must be no less than 400 square feet, equipped with tables and seating, and sufficient food, to accommodate at least 30 patrons at once. The establishment must have a current and valid health license issued by the governing municipal authority. R licenses are the most common type of license, and while it is frequently referred to as a “bar” or “tavern” licenses, many different types of businesses can hold such a license, including establishments that have obtained PLCB approval for an interior connection to or with a grocery store or convenience store.

R licenses are permitted to sell and serve beer and liquor (wine and spirits) products for on-premise consumption. Restaurants may sell up to 192 fl. oz. of beer for off-premises consumption, but they may not sell liquor (wine or spirits) “to go.” An R licensee that applies for and obtains a Wine Expanded Permit, may sell up to 300 mL (four 750 mL bottles) of wine “to go” in a single transaction. Licensees may sell alcohol between 7:00 a.m. and 2:00 a.m. of the following day on Monday through Saturday. If the licensee applies for and obtains a Sunday Sales Permit, it may sell alcohol from 9:00 a.m. on Sunday until 2:00 a.m. on Monday. The hotel must have a current and valid health license issued by the governing municipal authority.

H licenses are permitted to sell and serve beer and liquor (wine and spirits) products for on-premise consumption. Similar to R licensees, hotels may sell up to 192 fl. oz. of beer for off-premises consumption, but they may not sell liquor (wine or spirits) “to go” from its licensed premises, although they may sell alcohol to paying guests in their hotel rooms. An H licensee that applies for and obtains a Wine Expanded Permit, may sell up to 300 mL (four 750 mL bottles) of wine “to go” in a single transaction. Licensees may sell alcohol between 7:00 a.m. and 2:00 a.m. of the following day on Monday through Saturday. If the licensee applies for and obtains a Sunday Sales Permit, it may sell alcohol from 9:00 a.m. on Sunday until 2:00 a.m. on Monday. No sales or service of alcohol can take place after 2:00 a.m., and all unfinished alcohol must be collected and all patrons must depart the licensed premises by 2:30 a.m. (although patrons may stay past 2:30 a.m. if the establishment also holds an Extended Hours Food Permit).

Limited winery (LK) licensees may produce (up to 200,000 gallons) and sell alcoholic ciders, fermented fruit beverages, mead, wines and wine coolers from their licensed premises. They may also seek PLCB approval to sell their products at up to five additional "satellite" locations. In addition to the authority to sell their own products for on or off-premises consumption, they may also sell the products of other PA-licensed alcohol producers (i.e., licensed breweries, licensed limited distilleries, and other licensed limited wineries) for on premises consumption, subject to statutory restrictions, at their licensed premises. In February 2014, the PLCB granted blanket authorization for LK licensees to sell during the same hours as R licensees (i.e., 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m.).

LK licensees are allowed to obtain permits to sell their own products and offer tastings at events which meet the statutory definition of "alcoholic cider, fermented fruit beverage, mead, wine and food expositions" which are held off of their licensed premises. They may also obtain permits to sell their own products and offer tastings at qualifying "farmers market" locations, as that term is defined in the Liquor Code.

Limited distillery (AL) licensees may produce (up to 100,000 gallons) and sell distilled liquor from their licensed premises. They may also seek PLCB approval to sell their products at up to two additional “satellite” locations. In addition to the authority to sell their own products for on or off-premises consumption, they may also sell the products of other PA-licensed alcohol producers (i.e., licensed breweries, licensed limited wineries, and other licensed limited distilleries) for on premises consumption, subject to statutory restrictions, at their licensed premises. Limited distilleries may be open Monday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to midnight and Sundays from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.

AL licensees are allowed to obtain permits to sell their own products and offer tastings at events which meet the statutory definition of “liquor and food expositions” which are held off of their licensed premises. They may also obtain permits to sell their own products and offer tastings at qualifying “farmers market” locations, as that term is defined in the Liquor Code.

Licensed brewery (G) licensees may produce and sell malt or brewed beverages from their licensed premises. They may also conduct sales at up to two PLCB-approved storage locations. In addition to the authority to sell their own products for on or off-premises consumption, they may also sell the products of other PA-licensed alcohol producers (i.e., licensed limited wineries, licensed limited distilleries, and other licensed breweries) for on premises consumption, subject to statutory restrictions, at their licensed premises. Licensed breweries may sell malt or brewed beverages and alcohol for on-premises consumption Monday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to midnight and Sundays from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. (a Sundays Sales Permit is not required for on-premises consumption sales but is required for off-premise sales on Sunday).

G licensees are allowed to obtain permits to sell their own products and offer tastings at events which meet the statutory definition of “malt and brewed beverages and food expositions” which are held off of their licensed premises. They may also obtain permits to sell their own products and offer tastings at qualifying “farmers market” locations, as that term is defined in the Liquor Code.

Maintain club membership records, payroll records, financial records, all invoices and receipts, photo static copies of charter (if incorporated), copy of by-laws, copy of club constitution and minute book on the licensed premises.

Obtain a County Small Games of Chance License if you have raffles, strip tickets, punchboards, 50/50 drawings, etc. Poker machine and/or “skill game” payoffs are unlawful even when you possess a Small Games of Chance License.

Pay patrons for amusement or video machine credits, or allow unlawful gambling such as sports pools (possible criminal action). Remember that unlawful gambling devices, including games marketed by their manufacturers as “games of skill,” that allow payouts to players are ILLEGAL and you risk citation for allowing them to be operated in your premises.

Modern TVs are more complicated than ever before. If you’ve found yourself browsing one of our guides and felt stumped by some of the acronyms or tech specs, we’ve summarized the most common terms below:

LCD: LCD stands for liquid crystal display, and it’s the most common kind of television besides OLED (defined below). LCD TVs shine an LED backlight through a panel of liquid crystal, a malleable substance that reacts to electricity, opening or closing when jolted. In LCD TVs, the liquid crystal opens to allow the backlight through or closes to block it. The specific details of the opening/closing are dependent upon the arrangement of the pixels: The most common LCD arrangements are Vertical Alignment (VA) and In-Plane Switching (IPS), with the former tending to produce higher contrast and the latter tending to produce wider viewing angles. All so-called “LED” TVs are really LCD TVs, as are all current QLED and ULED TVs.

OLED: An organic light-emitting diode, or OLED, TV creates light inside each individual pixel without using a backlight and can dim each pixel individually all the way down to black, which LCD TVs can’t do. This tech gives an OLED TV an infinite contrast ratio and other benefits to help create an overall better-looking image, although at considerable additional cost. You can read more about OLED technology in this article.

Mini-LEDs: Every LCD TV made today currently uses LEDs to produce the light that shines through the LCD panel. Most TVs use LED lights that pass through a diffuser to light up the entire LCD screen. Mini-LEDs, which some TVs use, are much smaller than traditional LEDs, so TV makers can install more of them and thus create more zones of local dimming, which means less blooming or halos around bright objects. Mini-LEDs are completely different from micro-LEDs, an available (though very expensive) technology that employs individual red, green, and blue LEDs to produce an image without needing an LCD panel at all.

Nits: Also called candelas per square meter (cd/m²), this unit of luminance measures how much light a TV can produce. Previously, TVs could output 200 to 300 nits, and standard dynamic range (SDR) content was graded and mastered with 100 nits as the standard. With high dynamic range (HDR), content is mastered with 1,000, 4,000, or 10,000 nits as the standard; so, the more nits an HDR TV can display, the more accurately it can display the highlights in HDR material without having to reduce the brightness of the highlights or clip them.

Wide color gamut: Ultra HD content has a wider color gamut than standard HDTV content; right now, most UHD content is mastered with the same DCI/P3 color gamut used in theatrical cinema (the ultimate goal is the even larger Rec. 2020 color gamut). This expanded color gamut allows a TV to display richer reds, blues, and greens than ever before. Some TVs use quantum-dot technology to produce this wider color gamut.

Quantum dots: Quantum dots are a color-enhancing technology primarily found in LCD TVs (though some 2022 OLED TVs now have them as well). Chiefly employed as a filter that’s painted onto a substrate, quantum dots are microscopic nano-crystals that, when struck with blue light, produce very vivid red or green light (depending upon the size of the crystal). Quantum dots are the primary technology that allows LCD TVs to produce the wide color gamut required to display HDR content properly, as they greatly increase the color saturation of red and green.

Refresh rate: All digital displays (including TVs) have what’s called a refresh rate, measured in hertz (Hz), shorthand for cycles per second. A TV’s refresh rate refers to how quickly it displays new incoming video information on a nanosecond-to-nanosecond basis. While there are many possible refresh rates, most TVs come with either a 60 Hz refresh rate (meaning 60 screen refreshes per second) or a 120 Hz refresh rate (120 screen refreshes per second). Ideally, a TV will have the highest refresh rate possible, but there are diminishing returns for higher refresh rates during many types of content. A 120 Hz TV has advantages when watching 24p content or mitigating judder (definitions below), and tends to produce less input lag when playing video games, but it won’t provide advantages for most forms of cable TV or streaming content. In 2022, some manufacturers introduced 144 Hz TVs meant to appeal specifically to gamers, but the majority of TVs still have 60 or 120 Hz refresh rates.

Judder: This term refers to a slightly jerky motion that can occur when 24p film content appears on a TV with a 60 Hz refresh rate. In such situations, to make 24 frames match up to the 60 Hz display, half of the frames appear two times and the other half appear three times. This display technique causes judder, which is most noticeable on panning shots. Some 120 Hz displays avoid this effect by repeating each film frame five times, while some 60 Hz panels run at 48 Hz to show each frame twice.

Motion smoothing: Motion smoothing, sometimes called MEMC (Motion Estimation/Motion Compensation), refers to a TV’s ability to intelligently create new frames to create smoother-looking or less juddery motion. Most modern TVs can artificially increase their refresh rates to smooth out fast or difficult sequences, but the efficacy of this motion smoothing is often dependent upon the TV’s native refresh rate. Motion smoothing is also the cause of the “soap opera effect,” where cinematic/24p content looks more like a daytime soap opera due to the insertion of unnecessary frames. The best TVs come with multiple motion smoothing presets, and some even allow the user to fine-tune the degree of judder reduction and frame interpolation employed. When used correctly, motion smoothing can make content like sports and nature documentaries look more realistic, but we prefer it be turned off for content like premium TV, movies, and video games.

Watching digital 3D films with intricate graphics, surround sound, and the marshmallow-y seats of a movie theatre makes it easy to forget what movies were like beforeThe Wizard of Oz, when recordings were stored on bulky film tape and viewed in gritty black and white color. Since its inception over 100 years ago, filmmaking has evolved significantly into what we know today: Blue Ray, Ultra HD, GoPro—all of which are likely to one day become just as outdated as the long forgotten VHS, Camcorder, and satellite TV. From the cinematograph in 1895 to Facebook Live videos streamed from our smartphones, technology continues to reinvent the ways we view motion pictures.

Many people consider the “Race Horse” to be the earliest documented film in history. And while it was monumental for the birth of film, it isn’t considered the earliest film because it’s not, in fact, film. It was a series of cabinet cards by Eadweard Muybridge to show an example of chronophotography – an early method of photography to record the passing of time. The first documented film wouldn’t officially take place until a decade later.

According to the Guinness Book of Records, the oldest surviving film in existence is theRoundhay Garden Scene – a two second clip of people gleefully walking/dancing in a circle. French inventor, Louis Le Prince, staked his claim on some of the earliest film technology – the single-lens camera. As a result, Le Prince recorded his 12-frames/second video breakthrough using his single-lens camera and Eastman Kodak’s paper-based photographic film.
