Welcome to a guide on how to remove scratches on computer screens. Oh no! There is an ugly scratch mark on the screen, and it is very annoying every time you use the computer. Fear not. If the scratch is not too deep, there might still be hope with some “home and Internet remedies”.

A short disclaimer though. While I have personally tried and tested some of these methods, they are not proven to be 100% effective. But in any case, there’s no harm in trying out some of the “low risk” possible fixes – Read on!

Erasers are one of the most common and easy “remedies” that we techies use. Just use a soft rubbery pencil eraser (not those rough abrasive types) to gently rub on the scratch mark – It seems to work pretty well in removing light scratches, and it cleans off stubborn pieces of stuck dirt as well.

Have a very dirty screen with a lot of small scratches everywhere? Then you will need to get a cleaning cloth, some cotton buds, a soft brush, and cleaning alcohol (90% isopropyl alcohol from pharmacies will also do the trick).

First, apply the alcohol evenly over the screen. Be careful of the edges around the screen, and not get the alcohol inside – It will damage the electronics. Wipe it down with the cleaning cloth, and use cotton buds to target stubborn spots. This should pretty much restore any old screens back into their “shiny state”.

Note – I know the above is not a “scratch repair” video, but that is a very good demonstration of how to restore an old computer screen using cleaning alcohol.

There are actually quite a lot of these “Mythbusters” videos on the Internet that toothpaste does not remove scratches. Personally, I have tried it and it works – But only on micro scratches.

Lastly, apply the toothpaste to the screen, use a cleaning cloth and rub it in a circular manner – The whole idea is to use the toothpaste as a screen polish.

This is another trick that we techies use to hide the scratches, and yep, just about any petroleum jelly-based product will work. All we need is to gently rub the cream into the “scar”, it should start to “blend in” and fade the scratch mark. Take note though, that it seems to only work on matte plastic screens and not the glossy glass ones.

This is kind of an “enhanced method” of the above windscreen polish. If there are a lot of micro-scratches on the screen, you can try applying a wet piece of very fine sandpaper (2000 grit) in circular motions to get rid of them first.

Then, complete the treatment with windscreen polish and car wax. The whole process requires quite a lot of elbow grease and patience, but it does restore the screen back to its “default factory shiny state”… Maybe even better.

Once upon a time in the bronze age of the Internet, people would use mashed bananas and baking soda to repair the scratched CDs… A very eco-friendly way of repairing stuff, non-toxic too. If it works on the plastic of a CD, then it should also technically work on plastic computer screens.

Personally, a combination of cleaning alcohol and Vaseline seems to work the best; Cleaning alcohol to remove the gunk, and Vaseline to cover the micro scratches. But take note, this worked on plastic screens, not glass.

If you run your fingers across the scratch mark, and it catches your fingernail. That is probably too deep to be fixed with the above home remedies, and it’s better to replace the entire screen.

I"m not sure exactly what the composition of the LCD screen on the X-Pro1 is, but it does seem to scratch more easily than other cameras I"ve owned.  I"ve never put a screen protector on any digital camera that I"ve owned, and even after several years of use, none of them have shown any noticeable scratches.  After owning my X-Pro1 for less than two weeks, there were already a couple of noticeable marks (not really scratches) on it.  I own several vintage watches with acrylic crystals, and I routinely polish them with a little toothpaste to remove light scratches.  I tried this on my X-Pro1 with no success.

I bought an X-100 used over a year ago.  The original owner had placed one of those flexible film type protectors over the screen, and it has held up well and shows no scratches or marks.  I bought a three pack of them on eBay sized for the X-Pro1 and put one on it to hopefully prevent any further marking.  The screen protector also seems to minimize the visibility of the existing marks on the screen underneath it.

Toothpaste can be useful in removing scratches from the touchscreen of a car. Take a soft cloth or cotton and dip it in a small amount of toothpaste. Rub the piece of cloth or cotton on the vehicle screen gently. Rub it in a spinning motion, not randomly. Ensure not to use toothpaste excessively and not to rub the cloth harshly against the screen. I wasn"t able to find a commercial product that claims to fix scratches on a glass touchscreen, but a Google search turned up a variety of improvised remedies. These run the gamut from fishy to believable, but have one thing in common: a near-total lack of substantiation. I decided to sacrifice a disused iPhone 3G for testing, a process that started with a pair of keys and ended, painfully, with a screwdriver.

My testing indicates that this is a very bad idea. Glass grinding requires the steady application of wet-mixed cerium oxide, which is quite messy, and sprayed water, a natural enemy of all things electronic. I attempted to seal the phone with tape, but the sticky cerium slop found its way into almost every opening, drying like a fine cement.

As for the scratches, I was just starting to see improvement when I noticed a new type of blemish. My inconsistent water application had resulted in overheating, which destroyed an area of the underlying LCD. For a touchscreen device, glass grinding is, in other words, overkill, with an emphasis on "kill."

The best solution, short of screen replacement, is a screen-protector film. It won"t just shield from future scratches—it will make some shallow ones invisible.

I just got my NIB WOZ ECLE this evening and have been really enjoying it. After getting my initial games in I decided to update the software and while taking the time to closely examine things I noticed what I thought was a hair on the back glass. When I looked closer I saw that it was actually a scratch on the monitor underneath the glass. Not to diminish what any of you are experiencing but every year the same things seem to be echoed. There will be people that say their phone shows scratches/nicks inexplicably and that there must be a defect because previous models did it do it. And that may be true for them but there is always at least one thread posted echoing the same complaint. Only thing that can be suggested besides the obvious (even though not loved by those that hate doing it...that’s using a screen protector of some sort and/or a case) would be to report it to Apple and determine if it’s really a defect or just bad luck. For those that are near an Apple store and feel like it’s a defect should go there and let them see the device and observe how the screen looks and then while there replicate the issue. If the screen is truly faulty it should be easy to make a new scratch/smudge/scrap appear if the only thing that caused it before was putting it into an empty pocket for example. Makes it difficult for them to not be willing to replace the device if you can show the issue happens. Probably not what anyone wants to hear but being able to show evidence absolutely helps more than showing damage after the fact and wanting them to believe the damage happened out of nowhere. Not saying any of you are lying but imagine how many people do or would claim scratches they know they created by being careless occurred out of nowhere.

I would be frustrated if it happened to me no doubt but I’ve been very fortunate. Never had a scratched screen or cracks on any iPhone. Yes I’ve dropped them countless times, tossed them with abandon, etc but I’ve also always used a screen protector (always cheap ones) and a case...usually an Otterbox Strada but I do so because I know that I always plan to sell my device and by taking these measures my iPhones have always looked like new making get top dollar (far more than any of these trade in offers ever give). Usually the first week or two has me using a cheap case to hold me over while I wait for the Strada or this time the Nomad folio to arrive while keeping a trimmed down version of the plastic that comes on the iPhone in place until my cheap $5.99 3 pack arrives from Amazon in place to keep the screen pretty safe. I say all of this to say that I have been pretty lucky to not have an issue on any of my iPhones or the others in my home (iPhone 11 product red and 2 iPhone 11 pro gold)...although I did have a mini scare when I dropped a thick heavy palette corner down directly on my iPhone 11 pro Max gouging the plastic and making me terrified that I had taken a chunk out of the screen. Thankfully no damage to the screen. No scratch or anything. That was pure luck because it absolutely should have had some significant damage if not a full fledge shatter. Definitely made me think long and hard about adding AppleCare+ immediately
