This market research report includes a detailed segmentation of the global large area LCD display market by application (TVs, notebooks, monitors, tablets, and others). It outlines the market shares for key regions such as the Americas, APAC, and EMEA. The key vendors analyzed in this report are AU Optronics, BOE Technology, Innolux, LG Display, and Samsung Display.

Technavio’s research analyst predicts the global large area LCD display market to grow at a CAGR of 3% during the forecast period. The formation of UHD alliances is the primary growth driver for this market. During 2015, supply chain members of the global UHD TV market announced the formation of the UHD Alliance to support innovative technologies including 4K and higher resolution, high dynamic range, immersive 3D audio, and wider color gamut.

The decline in ASP of the LCD panel is expected to boost the market growth during the forecast period. During 2014, per meter square, ASP of LCD panel was $472, which declined to $416 during 2015. Vendors reduced the ASP to reduce excess inventory. The declining per square meter ASP of LCD panel drove the shipment of LCD display in terms of area.

During 2015, the TV segment dominated the large area LCD display market with a market share of 38%. The primary reason for the growth of this product segment was the strong demand for 4K TVs of 40 inches and larger screen size. During 2015, several manufacturers introduced 4K TVs ranging from 50 inches and above.

During 2015, APAC accounted for 81% of the market share and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 1% during the forecast period. The high concentration of display device manufacturers and LCD panel manufacturers in this region are the primary growth drivers. Technavio expects that the well-established supply chain for display devices in APAC would continue to support the dominance of this region in the market during the forecast period. China is emerging fast as a leading hub for large area TFT LCD display manufacturers because of the rise in the number of display device manufacturers in the country.

Manufacturing LCD display panels require economies of scale because the equipment used to manufacture displays are expensive. This presents high entry barriers for LCD display panel manufacturers. Currently, the global large area LCD display market is dominated by China, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan in terms of production and revenue contribution. Chinese manufacturers have the advantage of manufacturing LCD panels at a lower cost. This has resulted in price wars among LCD manufacturers and has accelerated the declining ASP of LCD panels. Vendors such as LG and Samsung are under a lot of pressure as profit margins have come down because of increased competition.

Other prominent vendors in the market include Chi Mei Optoelectronics, Chunghwa Picture Tube (CPT), HannsTouch Solution, HannStar Display, InfoVision Optoelectronics, Japan Display, Kaohsiung Opto-Electronics, NEC Display Solutions, Panasonic, and Sharp.

SEOUL (Reuters) - Samsung Electronics, the world’s top TV brand, aims to outperform the overall flat-panel television market’s growth this year, thanks in part to its newly launched LED models, a senior official said.Sue Shim, Samsung"s senior vice president in charge of sales and marketing at the Visual Display division, speaks during an interview with Reuters in Seoul May 15, 2009. Samsung Electronics, the world"s top TV brand, aims to outperform the overall flat-panel television market"s growth this year, thanks in part to its newly launched LED models, Shim said. Picture taken May 15, 2009. REUTERS/Jo Yong-Hak

“2009 won’t be an easy year but we plan to maintain market leadership with new products such as LED TV,” said Sue Shim, senior vice president in charge of sales and marketing at Samsung’s Visual Display division. “(Our market share) will go up.”

Samsung, which is also the world’s biggest maker of memory chips and No. 2 maker of mobile phones, had 19 percent of the global liquid crystal display (LCD) TV market in the first quarter.

“The downturn in the market doesn’t seem as severe as expected and we were able to outperform the market’s growth (in the first quarter),” Shim told the Reuters Global Technology Summit in Seoul.

A spokeswoman for the company, which has been cautious about the outlook for all its businesses, said Samsung is maintaining its sales target for LCD TV sets set in 2009 at 22 million, up 10 percent from 2008.

That target is below DisplaySearch’s forecast of a 15 percent growth in the global LCD TV market, but Samsung will strive to post higher growth and expand market share, according to Shim.

One key to future growth and market leadership for Samsung are the latest LCD televisions models using light-emitting diodes (LED) as light source, instead of bulkier and less energy-efficient cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs).

“LED TV has a vivid picture quality, a slim design and is eco-friendly. It saves about 40 percent of energy when compared to a traditional LCD TV of the same size,” Shim said.

A major obstacle for widespread adoption of LED sets is however the price premium, which can be as much as $700 (457 pounds) over a traditional LCD model of the same size.

SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea"s LG Display Co Ltdwill chop its spending by 500 billion won ($427 million) and revamp its older LCD TV production lines after falling to a third-quarter loss, it said on Wednesday.FILE PHOTO: An employee of LG Display walks at the company"s main office building in Seoul, August 29, 2011. REUTERS/Truth Leem

Hurt by lower liquid crystal display (LCD) panel prices, the Apple Incsupplier has replaced long-time CEO Han Sang-beom and started a voluntary redundancy program as part of a cost-cutting drive.

LG also plans to “downsize” two of its LCD TV panel production lines in South Korea and is looking into various options, it said, without elaborating.

LCD TV businesses accounted for 32% of LG’s revenue in the third quarter, down from 41% the previous quarter due to a reduced utilization rate of LCD TV panel plants, LG said.

The quickest way LG Display can counter the impact of TV panel price declines is by winning a sizable order for OLED panels for Apple’s new iPhone models, analysts said.

Prices for LG Display’s main product, 50-inch LCDs for television sets, were down nearly 16% in the third quarter from a year earlier, data from WitsView, part of research provider TrendForce, showed.

Analysts said Chinese display makers supported by government subsidies have been aggressively producing panels to ramp up market share, resulting in a global glut and driving down prices.

lcd panel market share 2016 quotation

Taiwan-based makers" large-size LCD panel shipments dropped 2.3% in 2016, worse than the average global decline of 1.1%, due to competition from China makers. Challenges from China competitors have been growing.

- Taiwan"s large-size LCD panel shipments reached 61.37 million units in the fourth quarter of 2016, decreasing 1.5% sequentially but increasing 2% on year.

- Taiwan"s large-size LCD panel shipments reached 61.37 million units in the fourth quarter of 2016, down by 1.5% from the previous quarter but up by 2% from the same period a year ago. Large-size LCD panels were still in tight supply in the fourth quarter, particularly TV applications, as a result of Samsung Display"s move to close down its 7G L7-1 panel line. Downstream vendors, in anticipation of the tight supply, were aggressive in placing orders to stock up their inventory.

- The tight supply is in general favorable to panel makers in the low season in first-quarter 2017. Taiwan makers" shipment volume is expected to slip 7% sequentially to reach 57.07 million units in first-quarter 2017 - a relatively mild decline judging from the seasonality and fewer working days during the Luna New Year period. Taiwan makers" worldwide market share will rise slightly to 34.5%.

- Compared to the same quarter a year ago, Taiwan"s shipment volume is expected to grow 15.5% in the first quarter of 2017. The on-year increase will be down to the fact that Taiwan"s large-size panel shipments in first-quarter 2016 was seriously impacted by a strong earthquake that hit southern Taiwan and disrupted panel makers" production.

- Taiwan"s large-size panel shipments for TV applications had a smaller sequential drop (1.66%) than those for notebooks (2.56%) and monitors (4.64%) in the fourth quarter of 2016. The tight supply in the TV panel segment prompted clients to fill up their inventory.

- The tablet segment was the only one with sequential shipment growth in the fourth quarter of 2016 since demand for tablets enjoyed a recovery. Chunghwa Picture Tubes (CPT) also had a strong growth in its large-size tablet panel shipments.

- In the first quarter of 2017, Taiwan"s makers will continue to see the benefits of tight supply in the TV segment. Taiwan"s TV panel shipments will have a smaller sequential shipment drop (5.4%) than those of other applications (around 7%).

- Panel makers are not much interested in producing monitor applications. They are mainly producing monitor applications to utilize their otherwise idle capacity and LCD monitor panel"s average profits are much lower than that of the LCD TV panel. Taiwan"s monitor panel shipments tend to have a lower growth than that for TV panels.

- Samsung Display continued reducing its notebook panel supply in the fourth quarter of 2016 and the Korea-based maker"s notebook panel shipments in 2016 went down 60% from those in 2015.

- China-based BOE has taken over most of Samsung Display"s notebook panel orders and has been seeing rising shipments. Because of the China-based maker"s competition, Taiwan"s share in the worldwide notebook panel market shrunk from 46% in the first half of 2016 to only 42% in the fourth quarter of 2016.

- Increased demand for tablets prompted vendors to place more panel orders with their upstream suppliers in the fourth quarter of 2016. Of the Taiwan-based suppliers, CPT, which mainly supplies panels to white-box tablet players, achieved the highest shipment growth in the quarter at 11.6%.

- Samsung Display"s move of closing down its L7-1 production line to transform it into an AMOLED panel line is expected to continue creating tight supply for the TV segment.

- Since the L7-1 production line was mainly used to supply 40-inch panels, LG Display, Innolux and AUO, all of which have similar production lines, are benefiting the most from Samsung Display"s departure.

- HannStar"s large-size panel shipments continued to drop in 2016 as a result of the company"s shift of focus to the small-to-medium-size panel market.

The AMOLED technology is rapidly gaining acceptance in the smartphone and wearable device markets. In addition to having a wide color gamut, AMOLED panels expand the range of design options for displays because they can be made on substrates that are light, thin and flexible. On the other hand, the adoption of AMOLED in the tablet market has been tepid even though tablets also have similar weight and thickness requirements as other mobile devices. The penetration rate of AMOLED-equipped products in the total tablet shipments worldwide for 2015 was 2.5%, according to the latest research by WitsView, a division of TrendForce.

LONDON (8 February, 2018) - Total shipments of mobile phone displays, including thin-film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT LCD) and active matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) panels, reached 2.01 billion units in 2017, up 3 percent from 2016, according to preliminary estimate from business information provider IHS Markit (Nasdaq: INFO).

In the growing mobile phone display market, shipments of low-temperature-poly-silicon (LTPS) TFT LCD panels, which realize high-resolution images, increased by 21 percent to 620 million units in 2017 compared to the previous year. Shipments of amorphous silicon (a-Si) TFT LCD mobile phone panels declined 4 percent to 979 million units during the same period. Even though shipments of AMOLED panels jumped in the second half of 2017 thanks to the launch of the iPhone X, combined with the weak demand in the first half, its shipments were up just 3 percent to 402 million units in 2017.

In the smartphone-use LTPS TFT LCD market, Tianma, a leading small and medium panel supplier in China, has shown significant growth, expanding its shipments to Chinese smartphone set brands, such as Huawei and Xiaomi. In 2017, Tianma shipped 105 million LTPS TFT LCD panels for smartphones, almost double its shipments in 2016, with a market share of 17 percent, up 6 percentage points from 2016. It ranked the second largest LTPS TFT LCD supplier for smartphones in 2017, taking over LG Display with 16 percent, down 4 percentage points, and Sharp with 13 percent, down 1 percentage point. In 2017, Japan Display continued its market leader position but shed its share by 10 percentage points to 26 percent in 2017, according to the latest Smartphone Display Intelligent Service report by IHS Markit.
