The latest revisions from ODMs have resulted in reduced noise levels and increased pump efficiency, and whichever brand you choose, the user experience tends to be familiar. Standing out in this segment isn"t easy, but NZXT has managed to do just that with its latest 360mm effort, the Kraken Z73.

Built using Asetek"s latest platform, the cooler includes a seventh-generation pump designed to be cooler and quieter than ever before, but the real talking point is the 60mm, 24-bit LCD display sitting on top. We"ve seen various manufacturers attempt to create trendy pump heads in recent years, and NZXT isn"t the first to shoehorn a display into the top, but if the goal is to bring an element of wow factor to CPU cooling, we can unequivocally state that the Kraken Z73 is the sexiest effort to date.

NZXT calls the cooler "the centrepiece for every PC Build," and as far as aesthetics go, such a claim isn"t outlandish. The circular pump head looks terrific in our test platform, and for those enthusiasts creating rigs designed to be seen, real-time and customisable metrics are both a major attraction and a key point of differentiation. That isn"t to say the display is perfect, mind. Get right up close and you will notice that the 320x320 resolution results in some pixilation, while colour transitions aren"t absolutely seamless, but from a couple of feet away it looks rather swish and plenty bright.

Incorporating a display means customisation is of paramount importance, and NZXT, as expected, turns to its freely-available CAM software app. Display contents are altered using the Lighting tab and the drop-down list of options includes popular metrics such as CPU temperature, GPU temperature, clock frequency or a dual infographic, pictured below.

The number of presets is decent, the radial graphics work well with simple colour customisation, and if for whatever reason you"ve had to change the pump orientation, click the "About the Kraken Z3" link to reveal a hidden option to rotate the display -90º. NZXT"s dual infographic is our preferred preset, but if you"re a tad more creative, there"s also an option to upload a gif with a file size of up to 200MB. We"ve tried a couple of animations with excellent results, and it is a great way to put your own stamp on a self-built PC.

Plenty of good news, yet the CAM app isn"t perfect. During our first round of testing, we found the readings on the LCD display would freeze under high CPU load. Fully uninstalling all app data and reinstalling the software appears to have solved the issue, however there"s still a question mark over system resources, with CAM occupying almost 400MB of memory in our test platform. Call us old school, but we"re of the opinion a CPU cooler ought not rely on software. If you"re of the same line of thinking, Kraken Z73 will work without CAM installed, with the display showing coolant temperature in white text on black background.

We suspect NZXT is going to shift plenty of units solely due to the appeal of the eye-catching 60mm display, however there is a sizeable hurdle to overcome in the form of a whopping £250 price tag. Putting that number into perspective, NZXT"s flagship CPU cooler costs almost 30 per cent more than a six-core, 12-thread Ryzen 5 3600X processor, and if it"s extreme cooling you"re after, a custom loop could easily be achieved for similar money.

A smaller 280mm model, dubbed the Kraken Z63, lowers the price tag to £220, and if you can live without the LCD display, a new line of Kraken X-Series coolers is available priced from £120.

What else do you get with the range-topping Z73? Well, the pump is attached to a 394mm x 121mm x 27mm aluminium radiator via 400mm of sleeved rubber tubing, with flexible connectors at the pump end. A trio of four-pin Aer P120 fans is included as part of the bundle, as are two cables that attach to the top-side of the pump. The first is a micro-USB for connecting to a motherboard header, the second is a breakout cable with six connections; three-pin pump; SATA power; a trio of four-pin headers for the fans; and an NZXT RGB connector for powering other lighting accessories.

Still, it sure does look handsome, and NZXT provides extra peace of mind by issuing a six-year warranty as standard. The major question mark that remains is performance, so let"s shift our attention to the benchmarks.

For those system builders who strive to reach the peak of thermal excellence and can’t get enough of that integrated, jaw-dropping LCD display, the Kraken Z73 is second to none.

As any enthusiast cooling system should, the NZXT Kraken Z73 ships with mounting hardware for nearly all current mainstream and high-end desktop (HEDT) processors, from both sides of the great CPU silicon chasm (Intel and AMD). Just note that if you want to chill your threadripper, you’ll need to get an optional bracket from NZXT.

The heart of the Kraken Z73 is a 7th-gen pump that promises better flow and reliability. The familiar NZXT reflective face actually hides a 2.36 inch (60mm) diameter LCD display for real-time reporting of CPU or liquid temperatures, and even has the ability to manage your own custom image or animated GIF.

A motherboard USB 2.0 header-to-micro-USB cable manages the connectivity between the CAM desktop software and the Kraken Z73. A proprietary cable fans out from the pump to a trio of fan outputs, a SATA power input, and an unused 4-pin connector.

The base of the Kraken Z73 features a copper cold plate and a splotch of factory-applied thermal compound. The traditional Asetek twist-lock bracket system is easily seen from below and allows the simple interchange of the correct mount during installation.

NZXT provides three 120mm AER P120 fans with fluid-dynamic bearings to muster air through the 360mm aluminum radiator. Each of the 2000RPM (max) fan blades has a bit of an upturned winglet near the tip and is surrounded by a contrasting molded shroud.

Installation of the NZXT Kraken Z73 is very manageable and similar to most other AIOs on the market, assuming the chassis in question supports a 360mm radiator. The length and flexibility of the sleeved tubing and swivel fittings allows for a multitude of different mounting options to suit your needs.

The NXZT CAM software allows for selection of the LCD display as well as multiple system sensor reports from the UI. Fan and pump speeds can be managed using either a curve ramp or manufacturer-defined performance settings.

There"s no shortage of all-in-one (AIO) CPU water coolers, but NZXT has always been among the top-rated in terms of design and performance. Instead of relying on simply air to cool down your CPU, an AIO utilizes a liquid to transfer heat from the processor to a radiator, which has fans attached to it to dissipate.

Compared to traditional air coolers, these are an excellent middle-ground between them and an all-out custom water-cooling loop. The new Kraken Z63 and Z73 take everything to the next level with a new LCD display, plenty of headroom with a 280mm or 360mm radiator, improved pump design, and support for the much-improved CAM software.

NZXT is embracing the RGB craze in system building with the release of the new Z series all-in-one (AIO) CPU coolers. The Z73 is the larger version of the Z63, sporting a 360mm long radiator (compared to 280mm) with three NZXT 120mm static pressure fans instead of just two 140mm blades.

This extended surface area allows for more heat to be transferred from the radiator to the airflow within the PC case, and the extra fan adds to the volume of gas that can be pushed through. While the Z63 may be more than enough for even more demanding processors, the Kraken Z73 is for entering enthusiast territory.

Not only do you now have one of the better-looking AIO coolers on the market — and there are plenty of AIO coolers available on the market right now — but with the addition of an addressable LCD display for a unique touch to the overall PC aesthetics. It"s possible to display the temperature of the liquid, other stats, or even an image.

In order to get the most out of the Kraken Z63 and Z73, you need to have NZXT"s CAM software installed. This piece of kit has been lambasted in the past from the community for shipping to NZXT PC statistics and other data, being sluggish to use and downright unreliable.

The most recent version has improved dramatically, though we weren"t able to get CAM to play ball with either of our Kraken review samples. (The joys of using pre-release builds.) Still, with the software and AIO installed, you can control fan speeds, as well as what"s displayed the LCD display. Still, even though I wasn"t able to Rick Roll the AIO, performance could still be measured.

With the rather large 280mm and 360mm radiator setup for the Z63 nd Z73, NZXT has been able to largely distance itself from such problems. Our testing setup included the following hardware:CPU: Overclocked AMD Ryzen 9 3900X(opens in new tab)

While you could run the Z63 and Z73 without CAM, you shouldn"t. You"re not only paying a premium for the performance, design, and warranty, but also that sweet new LCD display, which requires the software to configure. CAM is also still Windows-only.

The NZXT Kraken Z73 is an ideal purchase for those with Intel Core i5 and AMD Ryzen 7 processors or above. Should you have plans to kit out your PC with processors that rock ten or more cores, you"ll want to have the 360mm radiator at hand for adequate heat dissipation. What"s more, is this AIO isn"t just great at keeping the CPU cool, it also looks good.

The Z63 is a great choice for a similar processor range, though if you partner it up with power-hungry CPUs, be prepared to see a slight increase in temperature and noise from fan curves. NZXT nailed the design of the Kraken coolers, and this latest family of Z AIOs do nothing but improve the aesthetics of any PC build, thanks to the LCD display. Forget RGB lighting. Addressable displays are where it"s at in 2020.

The Z73 is overkill for lower-powered processors, but really if you"re all about low noise, a clean install, and reliable software support, this is a worthy upgrade to your aging air cooler. There"s very little to dislike, aside from the price, and CAM can still be a slight pain to use. Overall, the Kraken Z73 is among the best AIO coolers you can buy. The same goes for the Z63.

The NZXT Kraken Z73 is an expensive cooler. There are no two ways about that. But should you want a smart-looking AIO that can handle even overclocked 12-core processors, this is it.

The NZXT Kraken Z63 has everything the larger Z73 sibling has, but comes with a slightly smaller radiator and one less fan, but does slash the price considerably.
