I have a brand new 4:3 15" monitor I got this year that I"m very pleased with. The bonus (for me) is it has an 1024x768 native resolution. The reason that"s special is my Amiga"s graphics card has that resolution as one of its settings.

I specifically wanted a "small" screen, too, as it very closely matches my Commodore CRT screen sizes and angles. It"s actually 1 extra inch, I believe, but it"s pretty close. I have a 19" LCD that my older eyes appreciate, but it does look a bit odd sitting on top of the elegant A3000.

That being said, the 4:3 monitors I have that are non-HDMI and simply work with my Amigas are not brand new. It depends on what you"re going to plug them into, and which cables you get matter, too. Big Box Amigas use one type of cable while the all-in-ones (like the 500) use a different one. Buffered vs non-buffered.

Does this monitor handle 15khz through the RGB port (via VGA)? If so, how does it handle the various modes? I"ve been looking off and on for a really good LCD monitor that I can just plug into my stock A1000.

In the late 80’s I was lucky enough to be a developer and manufacturer during the most exciting time in the personal computers development my chosen platform was the Amiga but I have always just been a computer fan at heart as you can see from my retro computer collection.

My last two Kickstarters were great successes especially the first one, the Checkmate 1500 Plus computer cases that can re home an Amiga 500/600 or 1200 motherboard and expansions as well as a normal Mini-ITX and Micro-ATX motherboards. The Checkmate 1500 Mini followed and was Mini-ITX only as the name implies.

Looking forward on my road map I wanted to make a new keyboard and mouse but these projects have been taken on by other great members of the Amiga development community.

If your TV has a standard definition tuner, you may also be able to connect your Amiga 500 through a third party RF Modulator (about $15) but again this is not recommended.

Next up is a simple HD15 adapter ($10), but it outputs a 15kHz horizontal scan rate (VGA standard requires 31 kHz) so it only works with a limited set of modern LCD monitors.

An option for component video is the GGLabs A520HD ($80 or build your own with the supplied Gerbers). Like the other options above, it doesn"t have a framebuffer so lag is minimized and the picture is sharp, but the Amiga outputs a nonstandard sync signal and so this may not work with all monitors that support component video. To test your monitor, hook up the composite output from your Amiga to the green ("Y") component jack on your monitor and see if you get an image.

On a budget, the ubiquitous Chinese SCART to HDMI adapter (it"s sold under different brand names on Amazon and eBay but I think they"re all the same) is probably your safest bet. It has good compatibility and gives a good picture but the framebuffer adds some lag so it may not be the best option for fast paced gaming. Just add an Amiga SCART cable.

Thanks for volunteering brian. That should be a great monitor for native Amiga display screens and also sync up to graphic card frequency for a great one monitor solution. 19" should be a nice size for games too!

I would be a little worried about getting one of those DOA or dead pixel returns from somebody on eBay, but if it were available for the same price at Circuit City or Best Buy with the ability to return for a full refund, I would be interested in getting one for my A3000T w/RetinaZ3 as I can"t see the error messages when something goes wrong unless I keep it hooked up to two monitors as the Retina does not have a passthrough to display the native Amiga screens. Come to think of it, getting a monitor that is able to sync to both frequencies is not going to solve my problem as the RetinaZ3 still won"t passthrough the native Amiga screens.

This monitor looks much like any other flatscreen, and does the same job. It has one absolutely massive bonus feature up its sleeve - it can sync to 15Khz modes. If you have an Acorn Archimedes or Commodore Amiga from the 90s, then this monitor will do a great job of locking on to those modes that most modern monitors can no longer display, even when sent via the VGA cable. It works great with my Acorn A3010 from 1993 - highly recommended. Otherwise it"s a perfectly decent monitor with sensible on-screen controls that handles a fair few resolutions."
