Fortunately for me, I have ordered a big ol" pile of 2N2222s so I"ll be fine. If the instruction booklet gives directions for a 2N3904, and a P2N2222 is used in its place, the circuit won"t work, and I don"t know, may damage something. This is a pretty serious mistake, and I count myself fortunate to have spotted it. I just happened to be reading the right book before this kit showed up.
Otherwise, the Arduino fired up just fine, and overall I"m happy. (It"s authentic, by the way, if the little gold bit next to the USB is the, shall I say, gold standard for authenticity.) The kit may have been a bit pricey but then I knew that when I bought it. The base, to which you screw the Arduino and stick the breadboard onto (it has an adhesive back), is a very nice touch in my opinion.
UPDATE: The booklet does in fact have a pretty detailed parts list, with pictures of each item. I was wrong about that. And the list shows the P2N2222 transistors, in contrast to what is listed on Amazon. So that should mean the booklet will show proper circuits. I began reading it last night and it"s somewhat better than I expected, although I don"t think it"s adequate for a kid. It"s easy to burn things out on an Arduino, and the opening examples don"t stress this enough (there"s no mention of Ohm"s law, or the maximum current rating for an Arduino"s pins). So an adult with some knowledge should be helping. The booklet refers to pre-written programs that you can download from the vilros site. That"s nice, but you"re not learning much of anything about coding, only how to hook up circuits and run a program. That"s not bad in itself, but it doesn"t get into the programming aspect.
I also want to add that I spent several hours on various little projects last night (taking advantage of my programming experience, and the learning I"ve done with other resources on programming the Arduino in C) and had a ton of fun.
UPDATE 2: I got the kit with the LCD display. It wasn"t worth it. 1) You can get the displays cheaper elsewhere. 2) The site is supposed to have information on using it but it doesn"t; even after creating an account and logging in, I found nothing. Avoid the version with the LCD.
I"ve done Circuits 1 through 11 (will soon try the last), and eight worked fine. Two (#6 and #10) needed "adjusting" to get to work. I"ll elaborate below. #11 isn"t working yet. More below, A major problem is that the theory is (mostly) unexplained. Another big problem is the total carelessness in editing of the Guide. Circuit #11 is a prime example: the table of components and connections doesn"t even agree with the actual diagram. In many particulars. Another problem is that the circuits aren"t always the most efficient: there are some completely unnecessary connection, or connections that could have been designed more simply. I remembered enough High School electronics from 60 years ago to figure out circuits 1 through 9 by myself. For Circuit 10 - which introduces a transistor and a diode - I couldn"t remember (although I do know we covered both topics), so will have to dig some on the Internet. Below are two minor problem circuits that I was able to resolve, followed by #11 that I haven"t yet resolved (and which might not be resolvable - see below).Circuit#6: The voltage divider as per instructions has the fixed resistor at top and sensor (photo) resistor at bottom: so that high light gives zero voltage, low light gives max voltage. Must be reversed/corrected by either a code fix: 1) change the analogWrite(ledPin, lightLevel); into analogWrite(ledPin, 255-lightLevel); or a wiring fix: 2) connect photo sensor to f1-f2 with 10KOhm resistor between I2-I6 and sensor pin A0 connected to J2 (w/o any change to the code)Circuit#10 The transistor picture - as shown inserted in pins A1,A2,A3 - is backwards (i.e. shows the flat side facing column B of breadboard). Should be turned around: curved side facing column B); in other words A3,A2,A1. Without correct positioning the motor will not spin.I"m actually glad these problems occurred: forced me to really look closely at both code and circuitry.Circuit #11:As with circuit #10, the transistor is shown backwards. Also the diode is connected backwards in the diagram. And for the components/image reference the diode entry is totally wrong (along with 3 of the other entries). Only after correcting the transistor and diode orientation could I begin to hear the relay coil clicking every second.. But no current is coming out of the relay switch. Possibly the switch is broken. Not 100% sure yet. The relay switch actually has 5 pins - but the components reference and diagram only enumerate 4 pins - and you need to bend the 5th pin to get it to fit the appropriate breadboard slot (which connection isn"t even shown in the guide). Very sloppy editing/proofreading (if it even was).Also, I see that different reviewers have had other problems - that I didn"t have - so perhaps the quality/standard of the components is not consistent. But maybe the manufacturer has since resolved that issue (I received my kit in March, 2019. I didn"t notice when the other reviews - with problems described - were posted. ) All in all, this is a half-decent, inexpensive educational tool: can motivate a person to learn circuits AND computer coding if they haven"t already (or to re-learn if they"ve forgotten). I originally gave this a 4-star rating, but after the problems with circuit#11described above, I"ve downgraded the rating to 3-stars.

Update 10/10: It was discovered that the Vilros kit is a clone of the SparkFun Inventors Kit. How did they get away with this? Well, SparkFun released their manual under the CreativeCommons ShareAlike license. So Vilros took the manual and slapped their name on it, but still credited SparkFun on the back of the manual. It appears to be within their legal right to do this since they’ve attributed SparkFun as the original author.
The same parts are found in the SparkFun Inventors Kit. The difference? SparkFun charges top dollar for their kit. Same parts and nearly the same manual.
Looking at the first few rows in the table, all 3 kits look about the same. They all have a project manual with a dozen or so projects, Arduino, breadboard, 16×2 LCD display, and a handful of different colored LEDs (some more and varied than others.) The “Official” kit seemingly being the most well-equipped.
In terms of special items of interest, the Official Arduino Kit, the Vilros kit have a Servo, Temperature sensor, Photoresistors, H-bridge ICs, and either a Tilt Sensor or a Relay.

This guide is included in the official Arduino kit. The book itself is very polished and well put together. The cover of the book is embossed and it smells nice. The front and back flaps have large folds which you can use to hold your place in the book. Definitely a professionally produced book.
The book starts off showing how to light up an LED with a push button and then advances to using the digital outs to show how to light up multiple LEDs using a simple Arduino script. By mid-book, the guide gets into Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) — an important concept in digital signalling and control in order to make a simple theremin with the piezo electric speaker.
This book was written by the well-known electronics/maker website, SparkFun. The guide does not quite carry the same amount of physical cachet as the official Arduino starter guide, but it is very clear that a great deal of thought and consideration was put into creating this. The fonts, while less fancy, were much easier to read. The layout was also a bit more pleasing. The “inventory” of what was supposed to be in the kit was abundantly clear.
The next 2 pages were dedicated to explaining exactly the layout of the Arduino as well as what each pin did. The following 2 pages then clearly displayed what a breadboard was and how it worked. This was entirely unexpected, but very welcome.
There was a sense that the team of people that wrote this guide knew that not everyone has a degree in electrical engineering and that some things like the pin-outs for the Arduino and how a breadboard was not something that everyone would understand instantly. This was very reassuring.
The most striking thing about this guide was that it was a mere 3.5″ x 4.5″ (8.5cm x 11.5cm) and not very thick. The cover of the guide read “MAKE IT EASY MAKE IT FUN” in the much reviled Comic Sans font. If this was an indicator of things to come, this did not bode well for the Sunfounder Super Kit.
The ARDX Guide Book is a mixed bag. It does not have the same level of polish that the SparkFun or the Official Arduino guide have, but it is not nearly as slap-dash as the SunFounder manual.
The kit that truly put the most effort into making it easy to learn how to use the Arduino is the SparkFun Inventors Kit ($99) and the Vilros Ultimate Starter Kit ($63). While it didn’t have quite the polish that the “official” kit had, like the Millenium Falcon, “It’s got it where it counts, kid.” The guide is what made this kit. It was clear, well-written, and easy to understand. And it was fun, too! This is the right choice for complete beginners.
For people with at least some programming and/or electronics experience, the Official Arduino Starter kit ($86)is a good choice. The guide is professionally written and edited, but definitely targets a somewhat educated audience. Despite this, the kit contains 15 different projects, all of which were enjoyable. This is definitely the right choice for advanced high schoolers or those with university level education.
Those who already have a lot of programming skill under their belts will want to take a look at the Sunfounder Super kit ($50). The guide in this book presumes a modestly strong understanding of the principles of programming and does not take a ton of time to explain things in detail. This kit contained 19 projects and had a variety of different components to play with. In fact, I would expect that a person picking up this kit may already have an Arduino. If this is the case, the Sunfounder Super kit without the Arduino included is probably the better choice as it brings the price down to a low $35.
The ARDX kit ($60) falls somewhere between “the kit for Makers with some experience” and “the kit for Programmers”. It makes the basics pretty easy, but shortchanges the reader on good detailed explanations. This isn’t to say that the explanations aren’t there. They are. It’s just that they could be better. The value of this kit was also the poorest. At $60, one should expect a little more in both parts, projects, and manual.
