In this post, I’m going to tell you how computer monitors emit EMF radiation, how much they emit, how you can test this, and what you can do about it.

(Just a quick note before we move on. I would love for you to take just a minute and check out Nicolas Pineault’s groundbreaking E-book “A Non-Tinfoil Guide To EMFs.” It is the most entertaining and informative book on EMF radiation you’ll ever read, I promise.)

There are primarily three types of radiation sources that a computer monitor is likely to have, UV light radiation, x-ray radiation, and EMF radiation. Which radiation, and how much they emit, will depend largely on the monitor. Let’s talk a little bit about each kind.

There are basically two categories of monitors: cathode-ray tubes, and the flat-screen monitors that you see today, which are typically either LED or LCD based screens.

Prior to about 2001, almost all monitors were using cathode-ray tube (CRT) technology to power the screens. However, these types of monitors generate, and leak, small amounts of highly dangerous X-Ray Radiation. Although this had been recognized since the 60’s as being dangerous, it was not until the late 1990’s that manufacturers really fell under scrutiny for continuing to make a knowingly dangerous product.

This led to the manufacturing of Light Emitting Diode (LED) and liquid crystal display (LCD), which is what I used for nearly all modern monitors (and televisions)

Exposure to x-radiation is obviously extremely harmful and is an unfortunate bi-product of older style cathode ray tube (CRT) type monitors. The electronics in these old monitors generated extremely high voltages that would often result in x-ray radiation.

Although x-radiation that you could receive from one of these older style CRT monitors is dangerous and harmful, it is much less than you would receive from a medical x-ray machine or the x-ray at the dentist. This is the reason that they have you wear led vests to protect your body from the radiation.

Later versions of CRT monitors were slightly safer, as manufacturers began to take steps to reduce this x-ray radiation by adding lead to the cathode ray tube, which helped to cut down on this issue.

The EMF meter that the gentleman is using in this video is the older version of the Trifield meter, the company now has the new TriField TF2 (read my review), but we’ll talk about that a bit more down below in the section about measuring computer monitor radiation.

Ultraviolet light (UV) is much less harmful than x-ray radiation, but high amounts over a long period of time can still certainly cause harm. Some monitors actually have a fluorescent lamp that is part of the illumination. When the ultraviolet light strikes a white phosphor, the visible light that you see is created, but it has the side effect of sometimes leaking ultraviolet light out.

Luckily they make screen protectors for computer monitors that not only block 100% of the UV light but also help to filter out blue lights that can cause computer vision syndrome (CVS) from longterm exposure to computer monitors.

The EMF Radiation from your computer monitor will be relatively small and come from circuitry in the back of the unit. As you can see from the video above when he is testing an LCD monitor, there is still a noticeable amount of EMF radiation, but you have to be quite close.

The Long Island Power Authority did a study where they measured the average EMF radiation from many home appliances. Although they did not specifically test LCD or led computer monitors, they did test led and LCD televisions. Here are the numbers they came up with at the following distances:

As you can see, there is quite a large amount of EMF radiation at VERY close distances, but if you sit at least three feet away from the screen, you will not much need to worry about EMF radiation exposure. Be sure that you don’t sit so far away that you strain your eyes, but do keep at least 3 feet between you and the screen.

This applies to almost anything that you want to test, but you first need to start by getting a high-quality EMF meter. I personally use, and love, the new TriField TF2 (read my review). It is super easy to use, incredibly accurate, and measures every kind of EMF radiation, which you’ll realize is really important. If you need to start with a lower cost version I also like the Meterk (read my review).

Getting a good EMF meter is one of the absolute best things you can do if you care about the dangers of EMF radiation. Whether it’s figuring out how much radiation your Smart Meter is emitting, or testing to see if your microwave is leaking radiation, or comparing cell phone radiation, having a good EMF meter is the first step in knowing what the problem is, and knowing if your solutions are working.

First of all, computer monitors do emit a relatively small amount of EMF radiation at reasonable distances. So the absolute best thing you can do is keep at least a reasonable distance (3 feet or more) between you and the monitor whenever possible.

They don’t seem to make a good shield for computer monitors that are actually intended to block EMF radiation, but they do make this window film that you can pick up on Amazon, that you could cut to fit the size of your monitor if you really wanted to reduce the amount of radiation you’re exposing yourself to.

On any given day, we are surrounded by smartphones, laptops, tablets, WiFi, microwaves, TVs, even baby monitors–all of which emit radiation. The problem with radiation emitted by technology that we use today is that we don’t see it; and because these electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are invisible to the naked eye, our human tendency is to dismiss its effects on our health.

With the EMF meter, you can go through all your appliances and gadgets at home and identify which ones are known sources of radiation. Make sure these are located in areas that are farthest away from your kids rooms or common areas in the house.

With the EMF meter, you can prove and explain to your kids why sleeping with their phones next to them is bad. Getting kids to put their devices down is a great way to encourage physical exercise and interaction among other kids of their age, while ensuring that you’re giving them a break from constant EMF exposure

Even the World Health Organization admits that EMF radiation at certain levels can trigger symptoms like headaches, stress, suicide by depression, vomiting, fatigue, and loss of libido.

Yes, but it’s mostly the old CRT monitors that are concerning. Newer LCD screens don’t emit as much. The more immediate threat stems from the blue light they emit.

It depends on your distance from the monitor. Inches away would give you 25-500 mG of EMF radiation, 1 foot emits 0.4-20 mG, while 3 feet emits just 0.1-1.5 mG of radiation.

Monitors emit such a low level of radiation that most agree it’s not a concern. However, even low levels over long periods of time have induced side effects like headaches and depression.

Disclaimer:  If you are experiencing symptoms – headaches, sleep issues, rashes, etc.. from EMF exposure (microwave sickness) you will need to take additional measures than are on this page.www.electricalpollution.comis a great online resource. We also highly recommend contacting a professional, such as a BuildingBiologist, who can inspect your home or other location, take measurements, and create a professional remediation plan.  This resource is not medical advice.

When it comes to screens and electronics, there are different types of non-ionizing EMF exposures doctors are cautioning us about. The two we will tackle today arewireless radiationwhich is radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) from the Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or Cellular antennas, andextremely low frequency electric and magnetic fieldsfrom the electrical system (referred to as ELF-EMF in this post for simplicity).

In the newly publishedstudy, Kaiser Permanente researchers found pregnant women’s magnetic field EMF exposure associated with ADHD.  The research team has previously published replicated findings ofincreased miscarriageand in addition, increasedobesityandasthmain prenatally exposed children. Thus, low EMF computing is critical for pregnant women who are now teleworking.

As families set up computer workstations at home, we hope they can integrate these practical steps to reduce exposure to wireless radiation and other electromagnetic fields. We also hope this information inspires everyone to get involved in critical efforts to create meaningful long-lasting policy changes. 5G should be halted.  Governments should pass laws to reduce EMF exposures and schools and workplaces should have safe technology networks and infrastructure.

Computers, laptops, and tablets should always be used on a hard surface, rather than against the body. All wireless screens emit two types of EMFs, radiofrequency wireless radiation and electric and magnetic lower-frequency EMFs. As the distance from the source increases the intensity of these fields will decrease rapidly, therefore electronics should never be on the lap. Always use devices on a table. Another reason for using a table is because bending over to stare at a screen can result in text neck and other damage to the spine and posture.

Corded phones (with the curly cord) are easily found in stores or online. We recommend choosing a low-EMF phone as some corded phone handsets emit strong magnetic fields. Phones that have the dial pad on the handset tend to have higher electromagnetic fields (EMF). If you want to have caller ID you will want to purchase a phone that is “line powered” so that it uses a battery and does not need to be plugged into electricity.

People often use their laptops while plugged into the charger. However various types of EMFs are more intense emissions from a charging laptop because the device is plugged into electricity, especially if you are using a two-prong power cable (that isn’t grounded). Read how laptop manufacturers clearly state the human body conducts electricity from the laptop with a two-prong plughere.

You heard that right. Wired headphones from your computer to your ears can allow some electromagnetic radiation to travel up the wire and directly into your brain. Prefer a wired speaker, or if you need a headset use airtube headsets. The airtube stops the EMFs from traveling to your head.

Understanding the actual intensity levels of the various types of electromagnetic radiation in your home is very important. You will detect sneaky sources of EMFs and also have a great tool to raise awareness among family, friends, and in your neighborhood.

Safe Living Technologies is a company that sells Safe and Sound Meters and many materials to reduce EMFshttps://slt.co/Products/RFMeters/SafeandSoundProIIRFMeter.aspx

If you follow these steps you will be able to reduce a large amount of unnecessary electromagnetic fields from your computer area, therefore significantly reducing the dose intensity and duration of your firsthand and secondhand EMF exposures, and reducing the EMF footprint you make. These are the basics.

However, for more health-protective choices or if you may be experiencing EMF-related impairment or illness already, there are more steps you can take.

Please check outwww.electrical pollution.com whichhas more details on how you can further reduce EMFs. See alsoJeromy Johnson’s website formore resources on reducing EMF in your home.

Some people experience headaches, brain fog, burning skin, chest pain, heart arrhythmia or other electrical sensitivity symptoms when using a computer. Whether you already experience symptoms or simply want to use a computer in a healthier way, there are a number of practical things you can do to lower your EMF exposure.

However, through this process I have learned a lot about what works, and what does not when it comes to using a computer safely. My hope is that you can implement some of the solutions below to get back online or to simply prevent you and your family from experiencing the negative effects of EMFs.

3.) Try an electronic keyboard. During times when your symptoms are intense, there are still ways to be productive. I typed this article on my AlphaSmart 3000. It is a battery powered electronic keyboard (with almost no EMFs!) that will allow you to type up to 100 pages that you can easily import into a computer.

It’s amazing how productive and creative you can be without the distraction of the internet right in front of you! Many writers use these for their first drafts. Most of the material on this website was written on my AlphaSmart 3000 (pictured below). I recommend that you purchase the AlphaSmart Neo or Neo 2, which are newer models than the 3000 that I have. You can find a high quality model on ebay for about $50. It is one of my favorite low EMF computing purchases and it will last you for years.

4.) Use your smart phone for communicating. This may sound antithetical to some, but hear me out. I have multiple EHS friends who have figured out that the least painful way for them to be connected to the world is through their smart phone. With the phone on Airplane mode, it is actually a very low EMF computer. You can type responses to your messages and then press “send”while the phone is on Airplane mode. The messages will be stored by the phone. Then, put the phone down on a table, turn off Airplane mode and walk away from the phone. Within a couple minutes, the phone will have sent all stored messages and downloaded any new messages.

Note that this method works for text messages, WhatsApp and most web based email like Gmail or Yahoo. It does not work for certain apps like Facebook Messenger or Google Hangout. This method works incredibly well for those who are too sensitized to EMFs to safely be on a computer. See #9 below for another tip on using a phone.

Many desktop computers (or laptops connected to a docking station) with separate monitors can also work well (Older Dell monitors worked best for me). You can also use a screen magnifier so that you can sit farther back from the monitors. Desktop systems provide the ability to modify your work station in a way that lowers your EMF exposure (like moving the computer and screen farther away from your body). Several of my clients have done well with the Dell OptiPlex Desktop. Search for “Intel Core i5 – 8GB Memory – 500GB Hard Drive – Black Model:OP3060MTVKXV1 / SKU:6260201”.

For any used/renewed laptop purchases of the above models on Amazon or Ebay, just make sure you can return them within 14 or 30 days if it doesn’t work for you or if the machine is not working properly. I often buy a few models at a time and keep the one that works best for me. I typically take these older machines to a local computer repair person who keeps them running smoothly and updates any hardware/software that is necessary. Some laptops will last 10-15 years if you treat them well and a solid relationship with a good computer repair technician in your community will help you to have a low-EMF computer system for years to come.

As a general rule, older corporate Dell laptops and new Toshiba laptops (now called Dynabook) seem to work well for electrically sensitive people. Anything by Apple, along with HP’s and the newer Dell laptops tend to be high EMF machines. I have heard from many EHS people that Apple computers are the worst for them (partly due to their aluminum case – see this video). It’s a shame because I really like Apple computer systems.

7.) Work in a low-EMF environment. You could have an ultra-low EMF computer, but if you are in a high EMF environment you may quickly develop symptoms. Here is a summary of how to measure and reduce the four types of EMFs in your home and/or work space. Here is short video that show you how to measure your home. Finally, the following image shows the EMF measurements at my current laptop workstation. The RF, magnetic and electric field components are all very low. You can learn more about these meters and how to use them on my EMF meter page.

8.) Use a Low-EMI wired keyboard. Not every wired keyboard (or mouse) is low-EMF. Some will have cheap circuitry that will produce significant amounts of EMI (electromagnetic interference). This can be a problem for electrically sensitive individuals. I test my equipment with a Radio Shack AM radio model 12-467 (you can typically find one on ebay) or this TECSUN shortwave radio on Amazon. Here is a short video where I demonstrate how you can test your keyboard. This wired keyboard has been tested to be low-EMI. I currently use this basic wired Microsoft keyboard and mouse.

The messages then send once the phone is reconnected to the 3G/4G network (she steps away from the phone then). The USB attachment seen below can be found here. As outlined in this article, it is also possible to connect most smart phones to the internet via Ethernet, which makes it possible to use your device without any wireless connectivity. This is truly a low-EMF computing solution.

The following is one such system that was designed by Bruce McCreary, a retired electrical engineer who has been electrically sensitive for nearly 30 years. It took him considerable time to design and build this system, but he now has an ultra-low EMF computer setup. His knowledge is extremely valuable and could help you if you are serious about building such a system.

Here are some images of Bruce’s computer system that he designed for his off-the-grid home in Arizona. If a system like this is of interest to you, please contact me and I will connect you either to Bruce or another colleague, Richard Conrad, Ph.D, who also has considerable experience helping people design and build low-EMF systems.

If you have any suggestions of low EMF computers or methods that have helped you, I would appreciate hearing about them. Please share your ideas below to benefit others who are experiencing the exact same thing.

Using PCs & Laptops can be fun and productive. But the side effect of using them is the EMF exposure. In this chapter, we will explain the exposures and how to reduce it

4. Scan the components of your working station, with a fast EMF meter, to see which of them emit RF, ELF magnetic, and electric fields. Make sure none of them emit RF, make sure all are located at a safe distance from the user, so the exposure to ELF will be minimum.

5. If you don’t have an EMF meter, try to keep at least a safety distance of 0.5 to 1 meters away from PCs , laptops, and other devices and components of the working station (because of the ELF EMF radiation even wired computers emit).

6. Build a working station with a wired LCD/LED screen(with external power supply), wired mouse, and wired keyboard. Keep all other parts(printers, modems, routers, power suppliers, UPS) away from the desk and the user.

4. The easiest lowest EMF/EMI/RF environment would be in most cases, a wired-connected laptop, with all the wireless cards turned off from the device drivers, connected to a wired keyboard and mouse. please see – https://www.norad4u.com/blog/2021/10/new-laptop-minimalism-meter-home-office-improvements-10-2021/

How to build your low EMF (no RF) PC working station? Some people find it difficult, while it isn’t. I have made this video to explain how – https://youtu.be/0j3MRsekH3w

3. If you feel bad when sitting next to the screen (better to use one with an external power supply), consider working with an LCD TV or a Video Projector that is a few meters away from you or try using our LCD screen film – https://www.4ehsbyehs.com/product/led-lcd-screen-protection-film/

1. PCs and laptops still emit EMF and EMI even when wired. Use RF blocking fabric to block the EMF electric fields emitted from these devices. Laptops are easier to cover because they are smaller. Make sure you cover also the HDMI connector.

2. HDMI connectors emit EMI, Use your EMF meter next to the connector to see the emission(video below). So if you chose to use an external screen, try using pieces of RF blocking fabric to cover and fold over the connection to block the emissions.

3. For USB, Network, and HDMI cables use cable sleeves that are made from RF blocking cable to block the EMI and EMF electric fields emitted from them.

5. Screen protection film – Cover the screen with RF Protection film to block the EMI and EMF electric field emitted from the screen. please see – https://www.4ehsbyehs.com/product/led-lcd-screen-protection-film/

A desktop PC is composed of several parts: The case (with the motherboard, processors, hard disc, memory, and power supply), monitor (either CRT or LCD), keyboard and mouse. All these parts and devices are usually located in the PC work station very close to the user. In some cases, people add the (wireless router) and printer to the system. Desktop PCs are cheaper than laptops and if used correctly can last for many years. Ergonomically speaking it is easier and cheaper to create a good working environment with a desktop than with a laptop. But it is still very easy to make mistakes in the placement of the desktop parts and to create a bad working environment, both from the ergonomic and electromagnetic point of view.

When arranging the Desktop’s workstations try to put the case (that includes the motherboard, memory, processors, power supply and hard discs), printer, router and modem as far away as possible (at least half a meter) from the user. Try not to use the wireless network inside the house and turn OFF the WiFi wireless network option on the router and the wireless network cards in order to reduce the exposure of the PC users, and people around in the house to RF EMR. In front of the user place only the keyboard, mouse and screen. It is better to use a wired keyboard and mouse since the wireless keyboard and mouse also emit RF EMR. It is recommended to use an LCD screen that will emit only low levels of ELF EMR compared to that of a CRT screen.

If possible we recommend using a wired laptop without an external screen., But if you chose to have an external screen, choosing the right one, and using it in a way that will reduce the exposure is a smart move. The external screen is a must-have part of a desktop working station and is a nice add-on in a laptop working station. It allows more comfortable and longer work as it allows larger display size, better sitting ergonomics, and allows you to put the laptop farther away from you. But it has the potential to cause more ELF EMF exposure, and uncomfortability if you are an EHS person. So choosing the right screen, placing & installing it correctly is very important.

The cheapest panel type for LED and LCD screens it TN. I prefer to work with better types such as IPS. I find that using IPS panels allow me to work more time on the screen with less eye stress.

LED & LCD screens emit also blue light that can have an effect of your melatonin release, especially when used late in the night. In order to reduce this effect, you can use software that reduces the blue light component. The screen will seem to be less white and more red, but the blue light exposure will be reduced, and if you are sensitive to that, you will feel it. Today you can find the frew F.Lux software and for a small pay, the IRIS software. These softwares will allow you to reduce the blue light in the evening time or all the day.

PC speakers usually have a power supply, external or internal. These power supply units emit Low-Frequency EMF radiation. The safety distance from this power supply is up to 2 meters. Therefore it is not recommended to have them in or around people. Most people will put it next to the screen, or next to the user’s legs, this should be avoided. If a power supply is inside a 2.0 speaker system, it will be inside the heavier speaker. If a power supply is inside a 2.1 speaker system, it will most likely be in the subwoofer unit.

Today my approach is to use aminimized working station that includes a wired connected laptop, with all the wireless drivers and cards turned off via the device manager, together with a wired mouse and keyboard, and then to ground the laptop. I prefer not to use a big external screen since it adds EMF and EMI radiation to the enviroemtn (via HDMI connectors and the screen electronics). As the PC environment is minimilizesed, so does the need for protection is reduced, leaving only the need to ground and protect the laptop. This approach is explained in the following video – https://youtu.be/yhgU8UR24Hc

In the past, my take on that was to use RF and EMF protection over the laptop/PC, use a wired network and cables, and try to reduce the exposure as much as possible. This approach can be seen on the following video https://youtu.be/I3Q9ZujQkCo

Desktop computers don’t expose your reproductive organs to their EMF emissions directly like laptops do. This is because, to use desktops, you have to keep them at a certain distance. And since the power of EMF weakens as it travels, it’s fair to think that desktop computers are far safer than laptops. Right?

What isn’t different is that you spend a lot of time on both machines, and they both emit a massive amount of EMF. This is why it’s important to know the amount of EMF your computer exposes you to while working on it so that you can take necessary further actions.

Most people don’t realize that visible light is also a form of EMF. It lies in the mid-section of the electromagnetic spectrum, and it’s the only kind of EMF that we can see with our naked eyes.

Your laptop screen or desktop monitor emits visible light to project whatever you’re doing on it. At any given time, your computer screen emits around 400 to 800 THz of EMF in the form of visible light.

Even though laptop and desktop computers emit the same types of electromagnetic fields, the amount in which they produce these radiations is not the same. Research says that desktop computers actually produce significantly more EMFs than laptops.

Desktops are bigger, contain larger hardware components, and require more cables than a laptop. So naturally, they will give off more EMF than their compact counterparts.

Your body isn’t evolved to face the level of EMF you’re facing today. From your bedroom to public spaces, you’re showered with EMF everywhere you go. And that’s not good.

Studies show that prolonged exposure to EMF can cause issues ranging from minor sleep disorders to chronic diseases like cancer. Let’s have a deeper look.

When your immune system is functioning properly, it acts appropriately to threats. But when EMF exposure disturbs its balance, it can over or underreact, which can be a huge problem.

Almost all electronic gadget manufacturers advise you to keep their devices a specific distance away from your body. They do this because your EMF exposure exceeds legal limits when you use and carry devices like cell phones and laptops close to your body.

Using your laptop on your lap, carrying your phone in your pocket, or exposing your reproductive organs to virtually any kind of EMF for an extended duration can cause infertility, say research studies.

EMF-induced infertility affects men more than women, but women are also at significant risk. I have written a separate post on how EMF affects fertility which I highly recommend you go through.

Experts say that exposing your body to a huge volume of EMF disrupts your endocrine system, due to which your body can’t produce the necessary hormones properly.

Studies have found that when you expose your body to EMF for a long time, the production of free radicals begins to increase in an overwhelming amount, and your body can’t produce enough antioxidants to fight them.

It’s clear that desktop computers expose you to a large amount of EMF which can make you extremely sick. But the good news is, there are things you can do to mitigate your exposure exponentially without having to quit your computer use. Here are some of them:

When connected to WiFi, your computer has to emit large amounts of EMF to keep the connection stable with the router. And since EMF doesn’t travel linearly, you’ll get caught between that transmission.

See, when your internet travels to the router using an ethernet cable, most of the EMF stays inside. This will significantly reduce your EMF exposure. And since we’re talking about desktops, using an ethernet connection is convenient too.

Finally, you can also consider using EMF shielding products (like the ones SYB makes and sells). When working with a massive EMF source like a computer, you’ll want to protect your sensitive body parts from exposure. Those parts include your reproductive organs, your head, and your neck.

We have a lot of products in our store to help you with this, like the SYB Baby Blanket, SYB Cap, and the SYB Neck Gaiter. So, give the Shield Your Body store a visit. We have laboratory-tested high-quality EMF shielding products for all your requirements.

While working on desktop computers, EMF exposure isn’t the only problem. Your chair, the way you sit, your monitor’s position… if you don’t have your setup right, you’ll suffer some major physical discomforts.

If you’re thinking about what to choose between a laptop and a desktop, I’d say go for a desktop. I get that they emit more EMF than laptops, but you also have more control over your machine.

But if you already have a laptop and don’t want to shift to a desktop anytime soon, I’d suggest you visit my post on mitigating EMF exposure from laptops.

The TriField EMF Meter Model TF2 is an AC gaussmeter, AC electric field meter, and radio power density meter in a single unit, that combines all the features needed for fast, accurate measurements of electromagnetic fields (EMF). In addition to standard AC measurement modes, a special frequency weighted mode will properly scale the magnetic and electric measurements to indicate the full magnitude of currents produced by each type of field inside the human body.

Portable computers are often used at tight contact with the body and therefore are called "laptop." The authors measured electromagnetic fields (EMFs) laptop computers produce and estimated the induced currents in the body, to assess the safety of laptop computers. The authors evaluated 5 commonly used laptop of different brands. They measured EMF exposure produced and, using validated computerized models, the authors exploited the data of one of the laptop computers (LTCs) to estimate the magnetic flux exposure of the user and of the fetus in the womb, when the laptop is used at close contact with the woman"s womb. In the LTCs analyzed, EMF values (range 1.8-6 μT) are within International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation (NIR) Protection (ICNIRP) guidelines, but are considerably higher than the values recommended by 2 recent guidelines for computer monitors magnetic field emissions, MPR II (Swedish Board for Technical Accreditation) and TCO (Swedish Confederation of Professional Employees), and those considered risky for tumor development. When close to the body, the laptop induces currents that are within 34.2% to 49.8% ICNIRP recommendations, but not negligible, to the adult"s body and to the fetus (in pregnant women). On the contrary, the power supply induces strong intracorporal electric current densities in the fetus and in the adult subject, which are respectively 182-263% and 71-483% higher than ICNIRP 98 basic restriction recommended to prevent adverse health effects. Laptop is paradoxically an improper site for the use of a LTC, which consequently should be renamed to not induce customers towards an improper use.

A computer emits a combination of many different kinds of electromagnetic fields, ranging from wireless radiation (Wi-Fi), to intermediate radio-frequencies from the electronics, to electric and magnetic fields. The following are some solutions to mitigate these EMF"s, divided by source of EMF (laptop, internet, peripherals, and monitor) and then by category of EMF (wireless, radio frequencies, magnetic, and electric).

You can use a low-EMF USB keyboard and mouse to increase the distance from your laptop, and optionally connect your laptop to an LCD flat panel monitor via a VGA cable, assuming both your laptop and monitor support VGA interfaces.

(Note: Choosing the wrong keyboard can also be a great source of EMF, so check below for further guidelines for selecting keyboards and other peripherals.)

An often overlooked form of EMF are the intermediate frequencies in the kHz range caused by harmonics of the 50/60 Hz of electricity. Laptops can emit a lot of this (also referred to as "dirty electricity" or "power harmonics" or "digital harmonics") as detectable with a sensitive AM radio at the lowest frequency setting, so again, distance is recommended.

Headsets have some AC magnetic fields, and having them directly at the ear is not good for chronic periods of time. If possible, use an air tube headset. When using headsets which are not air tube headsets, keep the sound volume as low as can be comfortably achieved. Typically, the higher the volume, the higher the power line EMF.

Some of the old-fashioned box-shaped CRT monitors, are high in powerline magnetic field (in all directions), and may also cause exposure to higher ionizing radiation toward the back. Most LCD Flat Panel monitors, in contrast, have low powerline magnetic fields. You can check for

TCO compliance for low AC magnetic fields, or use a gaussmeter to evaluate the LCD flat panel for power line magnetic fields. The following TCO search can be used to identify the display of your choice.

Intermediate Frequencies Safety: Due to CCFL back-lighting, LCD flat panel monitors, even TCO-compliant ones, will still have intermediate frequencies (kHz radio frequencies), as detectable with a sensitive AM radio set to the lowest frequency. For long-term users, it is recommended to keep a distance of at least 4 feet from the monitor and avoid excessive use, if possible. Changing the screen resolution to a lower resolution, e.g., 1024x768 instead of 1280x1024 is one way to quickly increase the font size for comfortable viewing at a distance. For web browsing, Ctrl-"-" and Ctrl-"+" can be used to decrease or increase font as necessary. Another solution which has been recommended is the Fresnel magnifying glass.

Some have suggested that LED monitors will have lower levels of intermediate frequencies, but the electronics that are supporting the LED"s may significantly reduce any advantage this provides. For example, edge-lit LED"s might result in lower intermediate frequencies than full-array LED"s. Some individuals may also be sensitive to the blue light.

Do your resesarch online before your purchase of an LCD flat panel monitor, even if it satisfies TCO and low intermediate frequencies, to make sure it satisfies your desired resolution level, and other factors. To prevent flicker which causes eye fatigue, make sure you can set your screen refresh rate to 75 Hz instead of 60 Hz. Many laptops can only achieve 60 Hz, but many LCD monitors can support 75 Hz.

Radiation emissions from VDTs (for example, television sets and computer monitors) are regulated by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and manufacturers are required to test and label these products.  Regulations limit radiation emissions from electronic products to levels considered safe.

All television receivers (including computer monitors), regardless of type, must meet a mandatory federal performance standard so any x-ray emissions, if they exist at all, must be at very low levels.  I am unaware of two types of radiation, unless you categorize the visible light which you see on the television screen as one type, which is, in fact an electromagnetic radiation; You can also consider radiowaves, which are also electromagnetic radiation. Both of these types of radiation are nonionizing and generally considered safe unless one is exposed to very intense levels.

All television receivers (including computer monitors), regardless of type, must meet a mandatory federal performance standard so any x-ray emissions, if they exist at all, must be at very low levels. The key point is that the emission standard is for "any point on the external surface" which means whether someone is in front of, to the side of, or behind the display or receiver, he/she is protected against any potential emissions of the display to the same degree.
