Almost all the RGB cables you’ll use with your consoles have a SCART connector. You’ll need special cables to connect SCART to the connector your RGB display or scaler accepts. Also, if you ever plan on having more than one system hooked up to your RGB display, you’ll definitely want a SCART switch (as described in the next section), but make sure to read this section first. Here’s the adapters needed for the most common scenarios:
The most common RGB monitors accept RGB via BNC connectors. If you have a SCART switch with a female output port (switches are explained in the next section), you should get cable with a male SCART end. This is the most common and recommended choice (bonus: It’s switchable between input and output):
If you’re only hooking one system into the monitor, or have a SCART switch with a cabled output, you’ll want a female SCART end, so the cable from your system or switch can plug directly into it:
In the rare occasion that your monitor or switch only accepts csync, you’ll need a cable with a sync stripper built in. Unless you absolutely need one, get the above cable without a sync stripper instead:
– Good quality RCA cables to connect the converter and monitor. Please don’t use ones left over from your old cable box…and please, please don’t be dumb and spend $100 on Monster cables. You probably have a good set of RCA’s laying around somewhere, but if not, just get a decent set online. You’ll need 6 total: 4 for video, 2 for audio.
Personally, I’d recommend getting one of the the direct SCART to BNC cables with audio-out built in listed above. I wanted to mention the other solution, in case you needed them to accomplish something different (although I’m not sure what), but it’s much easier to just buy the right cable to begin with.
All other monitor, upscaler or converter methods will have similar cable solutions to the ones I described above, or just accept SCART directly. Basically, if your solution doesn’t have SCART or BNC inputs, I suggest googleing to see if anyone else has successfully used retro consoles through that display.

These handy little boards are designed to fit inside most common SCART cables and convert composite video to clean sync. Ideal for users of monitors or RGB switches (such as an Extron Crosspoint) that require a clean sync signal, or for XRGB3 users. These sync in SCART boards are much cheaper and much tidier than buying an external sync cleaner such as a Sync Strike. For full fitting instructions see this page.
Please note that the LM1881 outputs TTL-level sync. This is fine for devices like the Extron Crosspint, but If you are connecting to a device that’s expecting 75 ohm video-level sync (e.g OSSC or any consumer television with SCART input), then you must add a 470 ohm, 1/4 watt resistor to the output line. Usually, there’s no need to use a sync stripper with these particular devices however.
Converting HDMI “super-resolution” 240p from HDMI to VGA. CPSHDMI & Raspberry Pi can be set to 240p, then along with a cheap DAC and this converter, you can get the signal on your SCART monitor/TV.
The board gets power from VGA pin 9 by default, please ensure your input device outputs +5V on pin 9. If pin 9 is N/C, you may power the VGA2SCART by bridging +5V source jumper pads 1 & 3 and using micro USB instead.
If you are using a consumer CRT TV (B&O, Sony Trinitron etc.) which requires blanking/switching voltage to use RGB, you will get a black screen/very dim picture. If this is the case, connect a micro USB cable to a +5V power source which will supply +3V to SCART pin 16. This is not needed for professional video monitors, consumer TVs with “force RGB” in menu/service menu or TVs modded for RGB SCART which should already have blanking pulled to 5V to force RGB.
This adapter does not convert RGBs to RGBHV, it simply passes through RGBs to the VGA connector. For example, the SCART2VGA will not allow you to connect your consoles that output 15kHz 240p/480i to your 31kHz 480p-only VGA monitor. It will, however, allow you connect your 240p/480i consoles to a 480i monitor, or 480p consoles to 480p monitor as long as your monitor can accept RGBs. Please ensure that your device/monitor accepts RGBs before purchasing!

You can use many TVs as computer displays. To connect your Mac to your TV, you need a video cable that connects your computer’s display port to the video input port on your TV. Click the pop-up menu next to Resolution on the right, then choose Default for Display to automatically use the best resolution or choose Scaled to manually select a resolution.

Case in point on all of my stock 800XL A8s I always undertake this quick mod which eliminates interferance from the composite signal internally that affects many modern LCD screens when using any S-video cable.
This mod involves lifting the C54 right leg. I personally install a discreet microswtich so you can re-enable it if you want to use a composite cable, but this simple tweak makes a massive difference and gets rid of the checkerboard banding on screen every time. Then the S-video cable (especially if a shielded one), really helps further enhance image quality.
There is another tweak I"ve recently discovered after watching one of FJC"s videos and started to do as standard which sharpens the stock 800XL image and simply involves lifting the right side of C56, nothing more. (That is of course if your revision of 800XL board has this component as not all do I"ve found). It"ds also detailed here(just Googled it)
BTW for 600XLs this composite interferance isn"t an issue it seems, but what I always do with the 600XLs after hooking up chroma of course, is to remove the C109 ceramic cap which makes the image sharper also.
As I say for the XE lines I am not sure but it does seem - like Crossbow has posted - lots of internal tweaks, (like RF modulator removal or the aforementioned S.X.E mod, etc) - have to be factored in and potentially undertaken before we then look to comparing/improving the display cables themselves. (Where of course then a good cable makes a further significant improvement, whether it is Scart or S-video based).
