It’s a big piece of glass and the quality is remarkable for the price. It’s not perfect – [Dave] noted a group of segments on the same common lines that were a bit dimmer than the rest, but was able to work around it by tweaking the supply voltage a bit.

Dr Pan: Hello, Greg. VA is the abbreviation for Vertical Alignment. VA LCD is a negative and transmissive display with LED backlight. The background color is pure black. VA LCD technology is the only way for monochrome LCD screen to make the pure black background. The color of the letters is the color of LED backlight (usually white). If we want to display multi-color, some special color films will be added to the bottom of ITO glass.

The maximum COM is 16, so it is not suitable for the large dot matrix and complicated displays. It is a perfect display for the pure black background high end devices.

Dr Pan: Hello, Greg. Segment LCD screen can only be used for simple display content of numbers and characters at a specified position. For example, the display on clock, landline, calculator, etc.

It is supposed to be a replacement for LED segment display. If we compare it with LED segment display, it is more stylish and high class, but more expensive. If we compare it with dot matrix LCD, the display content is very simple and absence of variation, but much cheaper. It is widely used in monochrome LCD screen: TN, HTN, STN, FSTN and VA because of relatively low cost.

Hey, great instructable. When I first saw the 2x16 display had 8 programmable characters, I was hoping large fonts or some graphics would be possible, but given the few characters, and only two lines to work with, I just assumed a big font would be impossible.

While your letters looked great, in all honesty, your novice (but working!) C code truly made my eyeballs bleed. (Not a snob; I used to do mainframe C compliler language compliance testing, and have worked on Unix utilities for years; so I"m a bit fussy about my C. Code efficiency and compactness is key with me, and are right at home in the Arduino world :) Rather than complain, I"ll contribute :)
