I have a nice Lignomat meter that I use in my woodshop. I wanted a cheaper one that I could keep with my firewood gear to sort wood going into the firewood shed. I had tried a Harbor Freight pin-less meter but it"s readings were all over the place. It was useless. Turns out the readings on this General unit are very close to the Lignomat. Close enough so I feel they are interchangeable for 90% of my uses.

The problem area is the pins. On the Lignomat, there is a spare set in the unit, but they are longer ones, for cases were you need to get deeper in the wood. They are not backup pins. I have been using that meter for over a decade and have never bent a pin. The General unit has spare pins but they are the same size. Their purpose is to be backup because the pins are so delicate. I was able to carefully bend my pin and am still on the same set (after a couple of days of use) but now I will restrict the use of the MMD4E to soft woods and use it gently. Too bad. I would pay more for this meter. It seems fine except the low quality pins. $15 for replacements? Sure, if they were stronger...
