Thin-Film Transistor Liquid Crystal Displays use thin-film transistors to control the voltage applied to the liquid crystal layer at a sub-pixel level. The structure of TFT LCDs consists of a TFT “sandwich” and a BLU (Backlight Unit). A typical configuration is shown in the schematic diagram below.
Firstly, between the back and front polarizers, TFT LCD cells are made with two glass substrates – one for color filters, the other for a TFT array – and a liquid crystal layer sandwiched in between.
For normally black TFT LCDs, if we follow along a piece of light setting off from its backlight source, it will bea)guided uniformly by LGP;b)reflected and enhanced by BEF and DBEF;c)polarized by the back polarizer;d)polarization changed by twisted LC under the voltage applied by TFT arrays;e)“tinted” red/green/blue by corresponding color filter of the subpixel;f)let through the front polarizer by matched polarization; andg)finally, it will reach the surface and appears in viewer’s eyes.
For normally white panels, processd)will be the opposite – known as the polarization rotation effect, light is twisted in a voltage-off stage and can pass through the front polarizer by default, thus displaying white normally. However, when the voltage applied increases, this polarization rotation effect would be gradually diminished. And the light would not be able to pass through the front polarizer anymore without changing its polarization. In this way, certain pixels will appear in different colors.
Normally black LCDs have higher contrast and wider viewing angles without grayscale inversion phenomenon compared to their normally white relatives. And whether TFT LCDs are normally black or white depends on their LC switching mode:

As previously mentioned, TN mode functions with the polarization rotation effect. Under traditional TN/VA display mode, the liquid crystal molecules are vertically arranged, with a relatively narrow visual angle. When an external force is exerted on the screen, the liquid crystal molecular structure will sink in a herringbone pattern to slowly recover – a pattern called vertical alignment. Therefore, an evident “water ripple” usually appears when the display surface is touched and impacts the user experience. In comparison, the VA mode provides higher contrast. And MVA (multi-domain vertical alignment) is an upgraded version of VA with improved viewing angles.
Interaction with the pillar-to-pillar display is supported by an integrated control display, that appears, as if by magic, only when it is needed. This unique display solution prevents unnecessary information from distracting the driver. The panel can also be used to conveniently control areas that are out of arm’s reach for the user. The haptic feedback of the panel makes it possible to operate the pillar-to-pillar display without having to take your eyes off the road. Covered by a semi-transparent surface the invisible display is integrated seamlessly into the interior design surface, both visually and haptically. When the display is not needed, it is invisible. It does not appear as an empty black space, instead it merges with the decorative surface to form a single unit, in a wood, carbon or any other premium look and feel. In addition, a special matrix backlight is used. This lighting technology allows content to be displayed in the required brightness and with the highest possible contrast in any lighting situation, without a visible background (also known as the “postcard effect”).

Four main gauge pages are provided, and each page can by configured to show your preferred gauge selections. A quick touch on any small gauge causes a full-screen gauge to be displayed and the unit can also be set to immediately show the relevant large gauge when an alarm is triggered.
When used with an AlcaTek, Link, Vi-PEC or MoTeC ecus, launch control and antilag can be turned on and off directly from the touchscreen, and the launch RPM may also be adjusted from the screen for AlcaTek and MoTeC ecus. For Syvecs the LC status is displayed, and ALS can be turned on/off.
The display is a full-colour TFT LCD with 320×240 pixels and a resistive touchscreen. Backlight dimming for night time use can be manually selected, and/or automatically enabled if the unit is wired to the vehicles “illumination” circuit.
Gauge scales can be display in either imperial, metric units or “USA” units, with road speed in mph or kph. Alarms can be enabled individually as required for each parameter.
Of course, gauges will only show valid data when appropriate sensors are wired to the ECU but gauges 1 through 9 below are generally available for most installations. Only full screen gauges for available sensors need be enabled, meaning “dead” gauges are not displayed.
Additionally, warnings are provided when engine knock is detected by the ecu, if injector duty cycle exceeds a selectable value, or if a sensor connected to the ecu fails. Sensor failures are displayed, and a unique “lean lambda” alarm can be set to warn of lean running when on boost.
Wide viewing angle performance, consistent color performance, and brightness are key features of the P0650VGF1MA00 with Tianma’s implementation of SFT technology. Wide viewing angles of 85 degrees are supported in all directions (up/down, left/right). The white LED backlight has a 100K hour half-brightness lifetime and provides a 1200cd/m² brightness specification. A contrast ratio of 900:1 ensures that display images are bright, concise, and uniform.
The P0650VGF1MA00 features a single-channel 20-pin LVDS data interface that supports a configurable 6-bit or 8-bit RGB data which enables a color palette of up to 262Kor 16.7M colors.
