Your “bike inseam” -- or inside leg length -- is the distance between your body where it sits on your bike saddle and the ground. This will typically be an inch or two longer than the length of your trousers, but you’ll want to measure to be sure. You’ll use this number on the chart to get a feel for how the different models will fit you.

Wearing your regular riding shoes and with your back to the wall, stand with your feet spread so there is about 7 inches between them - this is about the distance apart your feet would be when straddling a bike with your feet on

Place a hardcover book against the wall with the spine of the book facing upward. Slide the book upwards towards your groin until it is solidly against your body. This may be a bit awkward, but is way more comfortable -- and safer! -- than trying to ride a bike that is too big.

The LCD Display Upgrade provides additional information while riding, including Speedometer, Odometer, Trip Odometer, Average Speed, Max Speed, and Pedal Assist (PAS) levels 1-4. This replaces the stock LED display on the RadRunner, RadMission, and RadExpand.

My roommate and friend Dagny Daniel was in the market for an electric bike, and when she saw Rad Power Bikes was selling their entry-level e-bike for a $500 ($700 lower than its usual price), she jumped at the opportunity to buy it. When the bike came, Dagny put it together and charged it up, excited to hit the bike path.

But she’d only had it for a few days when the honeymoon period ended. Dagny and I were riding with a group of other people on bikes deep in the north Portland peninsula this past weekend when all the sudden, the lights on her bike turned off and the pedal-assist stopped working. (No, it wasn’t dead.) Eventually, we got it going again, but only briefly before it puttered out once more and she had to ride to back without any electric assistance or lights. Right now, the bike is sitting in our basement waiting for someone to figure out what went wrong and get it back in commission.

Dagny isn’t the only person who just bought a Rad Power bike. The e-bike company’s recent sale was very popular – turns out, $500 e-bikes sell like hotcakes. On my own Twitter feed, I heard dozens of accounts of people buying their first electric bikes because of this sale. One particularly exciting anecdote was from someone who said that the person who delivered their bike was so inspired by all the boxes of bikes he was delivering that he decided to get one for himself.

Some e-bike advocates saw the success of this sale as an indication that there’s a demand for electric bikes that should be met with more rebate programs. The popularity of such programs in places like Colorado has shown that people are interested in buying e-bikes at reduced rates and once they have the bikes, they often become game-changers for reducing their car use.

But Dagny’s experience made me wonder if there are more people who have had trouble with their new Rad Power bikes and how local bike shops are dealing with it.

Rad Power is based out of Seattle, and they have brick-and-mortar service centers in some other cities in the United States and Canada (but not in Portland). They used to operate a mobile repair service in some other cities, including Portland, so people could get help directly from Rad Power, but they cancelled that program a few months before the big sale. (According to Rad Power’s website, local mobile bike repair service Velofix is still available to help.) This has left some bike shops in a lurch.

Employees at the The eBike Store in the Piedmont Neighborhood express skepticism about direct-to-consumer electric bike companies like Rad Power. Andrew Schnell, a sales employee at the bike shop, says he thinks they’ve been able to hone in on an important market of people who want functional, non-luxury electric bikes at an affordable price.

The least expensive bike sold at the eBike store is $2500 – twice as much as what the RadMission usually costs, and five times as much as its sale price. Schnell said he thinks it’s worth the cost for a better quality bike that you can get serviced locally, but he understands why people are hesitant to pay that much for a bike.

Schnell said he has had trouble getting ahold of people from Rad Power when he has questions about their bikes, so the shop is limited in what it can do to help people who run into problems with them. This has meant some angry customers leaving one-star Yelp reviews for the eBike Store, which never claimed to be a Rad Power retailer or service shop in the first place.

There are several stores in Portland that Rad Power owners have said will service their bikes. Rad Power’s website lists the Bikeologist Mobile Bicycle Repair and Upcycles as options for people who want to get help in-person. But part replacements for Rad Power bikes are hard to come by right now because of all the demand.

Thankfully, experiences like Dagny’s seem rare. When I tweeted asking for people’s experiences with their new Rad Power bikes, I received overwhelmingly positive reports, and most people writing reviews online are very pleased with their purchase. (And by the way, Dagny isn’t giving up on her bike – she’ll get back on the seat as soon as she can, but it might take some time to find someone who can help.)

Schnell acknowledges that his exposure to the bikes is more likely to be negative because people are coming to the bike shop with their grievances. But his overall takeaway is that because this industry is fairly new, there are going to be some kinks to work out as e-bikes stake their place as a popular mode of transportation.

It’s a promise we stand behind: If you find a lower price on a bike elsewhere, we will sell it to you for 10% less. For example, if you find a bike for $480 that we have listed at $500, we will offer you to buy it for $432 through BikeRide. The bike must be the same color and size, sold in the US and not include the use of a coupon.

If you find a lower price, email us at [email protected] with documentation of the price. We’re committed to making sure that the cost of a bike does not keep you from cycling!

Here at Electrek we have spent countless hours undertaking detailed hands-on testing of hundreds of electric bikes. Through those thousands of miles of riding, we’ve gotten to know these e-bikes inside and out, top to bottom and front to back. That dedication to real world e-bike testing has helped us find the best electric bicycles on the market for just about any budget.

Below you’ll find some of the top e-bikes we’ve hand-tested for every price range, current as of December 2022. Now that we’re deep into the holiday season, there are some great deals waiting for you out there. One of these electric bikes just might be your next set of wheels for some fun season-changing riding!

First, it’s pretty hard to produce a quality e-bike and sell it for under $1k. Most of the options in this price category make too many sacrifices in quality or longevity to earn a spot on this list as one of “the best”.

Second, many newcomers to the e-bike industry just aren’t prepared to drop several thousand dollars on a brand new concept, making this price range critical for many first time e-bike shoppers.

For years, the $999 Lectric XP 2.0 and its previous 1.0 predecessor reigned supreme in the budget electric bike category. That’s still a great bike, and we’ll discuss it next, but the recently-released and more affordable$799 Lectric XP LITE is an even more wallet-friendly electric bike.

It’s a throttle-enabled Class 2 folding electric bike with 20″ wheels, a max speed of 20 mph (32 km/h) and a motor rated for 300W continuous and 720W peak.

This is the only e-bike in this price range that I know of with a 48V electrical system. All the other budget e-bikes under $800 use a 36V system and thus suffer from weaker power.

There are some things that you give up with this model, such as that the fenders aren’t included free. But for just $799, you’re still getting built-in lights, a hidden battery, large LCD display and a lightweight folder. Plus it comes in four color options.

If you like the idea of a low-cost US-based company like Lectric eBikes but want something with more power than their XP LITE, consider the $999 Lectric XP 3.0. The XP 3.0 was just unveiled last month and is the newest version of America’s best-selling electric bike, the XP 2.0. In my opinion, this is the current king of bang-for-your-buck electric bikes right now.

Between the fast 28 mph speed, comfortable ride with front suspension, nimble yet thick three-inch tires, and the powerful 1,000W peak-rated motor, the bike combines high performance with an awesome price. The new version comes with a higher power motor featuring more torque, a new rear rack that can support 150 pounds (and has a passenger package option for carrying a friend), has longer travel suspension, and several other key upgrades.

There are both step-over and step-through frames available. To be honest, the frame member is low on both of them and so they’re both easy to mount, but I actually prefer the step-through. Even though low-step bikes are often considered to be “women’s bikes,” the Lectric XP 3.0 looks badass enough that no one would ever think of calling the step-through option a ladies bike. It’s just a more comfortable way to hop on and off.

Plus, the Lectric XP 3.0’s folding frame means you can bring this high-value e-bike with you in a car or truck. I know several people that keep one in their RV, and I’ve even heard of folks traveling with it on their boat or light airplane.

The company just unveiled longer range batteries for the XP 3.0 that add 45% more range. If you’re the kind of person that likes to ride fast, that battery will help you use that power for longer rides at higher speeds.

But you should know going in that this is very much a pedal-oriented e-bike. There’s no throttle and the motor is only moderately powerful, peaking at 500W. That means the Roadster V2 is best for someone who enjoys cycling and simply wants an assist motor to help them go faster and farther.

The HittRoad is an Amazon e-bike, which can be both a pro and a con. Amazon e-bikes are generally low-priced, ship quickly and come with the backing of Amazon if you get a junker and need to return it. The downside is you don’t have long brand history and dedicated technical support.

For around $760 though (or $610 if you clip the $150 Amazon coupon), many people will make that tradeoff. And after testing out the HittRoad electric bike, I can say this is a surprisingly decent e-bike for the price.

It has a mountain bike style setup, though you shouldn’t expect to take it off any sweet jumps. But for normal trail rides and recreational trips, it will be plenty.

It’s not particularly fast at just 18 mph. And it’s also a pedal-assist e-bike, meaning you don’t have a throttle for the days when you feel lazy. But for anyone that doesn’t mind pedaling as long as you get a decent electric boost, the Propella Mini is a great option for you.

I love the bright blue rims, white chain, and slim black frame. The look is killer. And the bike rides both smoothly and efficiently. There’s no suspension to speak of, but the upside is there’s no suspension fork to break. The bike should last a long time with modest upkeep, and it’s a definite winner for anyone that’s low on space.

The $999 JackRabbitis in one of these fuzzy areas between e-bikes and other e-rideables. In this case, it straddles the line between an electric bike and an electric scooter.

It more or less feels like an electric bike based on its ride geometry. However the lack of pedals means that it could also be classified as an electric scooter, albeit a large-wheeled e-scooter.

But with those 20-in wheels and bicycle seat, the JackRabbit rides much more like a small folding e-bike than an e-scooter. And its electronics match that of a light e-bike too.

The biggest benefit of the JackRabbit is that it is so simple that the lack of frills keeps the weight down to just 23 lb (10.5 kg)! For an e-bike, that’s almost so light that it floats.

The RadMission is the epitome of an affordable metro bike. The bike is normally priced at $1,199 but is currently on a super sale for just $499! It’s purely designed for the city, though that hasn’t stopped me from abusing it off road either, testing its impressive ruggedness.

The bike features moderately-sized tires that balance ride comfort and efficiency, yet offers no suspension, keeping it light and long-lasting. There’s a peppy 500W motor and removable 500Wh battery. Both are balanced nicely to offer good performance while keeping the price and weight low.

Rad Power Bikes is also the largest electric bicycle company in North America, meaning you’ve got the backing of a solid service department and the peace of mind from knowing the company will be around for years to come.

The $1,199 Aventon Soltera is a beautiful city bike that offers some of the best quality fabrication that I’ve seen in this price range – or even in higher price ranges. It is offered in either a single-speed or seven-speed format.

The battery is a bit smaller at 36V and 10Ah, but the bike makes up for a smaller battery by being able to integrate it into the frame in a sleek and attractive package.

The beautiful color display also adds to the bike’s charm, as do the powerful headlight and frame-integrated tail light. There’s even an awesome companion app that lets your phone track your bike’s important stats. Basically, you’re getting a lot for $1,199 here!

Ride1Up has proven itself as a high-value electric bike brand, focusing largely on efficient and speedy commuter e-bikes. While the company has many models in the $1,000 to $2,000 range, the $1,095 Ride1Up Core-5 is one of the best bang-for-your-buck options.

A powerful 750W continuous-rated motor gets the bike up to Class 3 speeds that will have you keeping up with traffic or even passing cars when they get bogged down in the city. That extra speed over most class 2 e-bikes can be quite useful when riding on the side of the road trying to reduce the number of times a car whizzes by you. Even when riding alone or in a protected path away from cars, the extra speed sure makes for a fun ride.

The street tires, sporty frame, and straight bars are the perfect combination for a responsive commuter e-bike. I’d definitely recommend spending an extra $60 for the rack and fender option if you live in an area that is prone to rain or even sprinkler puddles, plus that $50 optional rack is always useful. The frame even comes in both a step-over and step-through variant to offer both styles. And a new update added a headlight to the standard equipment as well as a larger battery.

If you want to upgrade to more power and a nicer set of components, the $1,695 700 Series is worth a look. But I think the Core-5 is sufficient for most riders, and that’s probably why it is Ride1Up’s best-selling model.

TheLectric XPremium packs in so much value at its $1,799 price that it is borderline unbelievable. This is the latest model from budget king Lectric eBikes and it puts many other e-bikes to shame thanks to its combination of high performance and comparatively low cost. There are $3,000+ e-bikes that compete at a similar level to this affordable ride.

This is perhaps the lowest-cost mid-drive electric bicycle that still offers a true torque sensor, powerful performance, and long range riding. The 800W motor is paired with a 7-speed drivetrain and offers speeds of up to 28 mph (45 km/h).

The bike comes with two removable batteries totaling up to 1,000 Wh of capacity. That’s enough for 50 miles (80 km) of range on throttle-only riding or closer to 100 miles (160 km) of range with pedal assist.

In addition, the bike includes other premium components such as hydraulic disc brakes, an oil suspension fork, built in LED lights, included fenders, a strong rear rack and an easy-to-read LCD display. Oh yea, and the step-thru frame folds in half, too!

When it comes to mid-drive electric bicycles, there simply isn’t a better bang-for-your-buck option than the Lectric XPremium. The bike debuted at $1,799 though is expected to increase to its $1,999 MSRP sometime soon. So if you don’t want to spend an extra $200 (which, to be honest, would still be a good deal), you may want to act fast.

One of the coolest features though is the passenger package that adds a rear bench seat, wheel skirt and foot pegs so you can carry a second rider on back. The second seat has a quick release so you can easily pop it on and off the bike whenever you need to swap back and forth between carrying your friends or a basket full of groceries home.

The RadRunner from Rad Power Bikes has been an industry favorite ever since it was first announced back in 2019. The company is actually on the RadRunner 2 now, but the update only made minor changes since the original was already so well designed.

The bike uses a step-through moped style frame to create a short utility bike or mini cargo e-bike. It’s quick up to the 20 mph top speed and offers a ton of uses. When outfitted with the Passenger Package, it has a seat and footpegs that let you carry kids or adults on the back, turning this into a multi-passenger e-bike.

The high-capacity battery and powerful motor also make for sprightly acceleration and longer than average rides, so you’ll have enough power to ride all day.

The RadRunner is truly one of those do-anything e-bikes because it has so many uses. The same bike can be used for fun recreational riding, city commuting, trail riding, or grocery shopping. There’s something for everyone.

There’s even an upgraded version known as the RadRunner Plus, which adds suspension, a seven-speed transmission, a more detailed display, and the passenger package, though the RadRunner Plus costs a bit more at $1,899.

Plus that long rear bench has tons of room for boxes, bags, or kiddos. I’ve had three riders on the bike plenty of times, and it can definitely do more. Plus, I love that double center kickstand for creating an ultra-stable parking platform.

They start with bare frames and perform the entire build locally with highly trained e-bike technicians. That also allows them to offer more customization options than any other e-bike company out there.

The $1,949 Model Y is a step-through cruiser e-bike with a hidden battery in the front basket. It offers fast speeds up to 28 mph and high-quality parts like hydraulic disc brakes and top-end hardware. The color screen and leather accents on the seat and bar ends add to the classy look too!

The real treat though is getting to select the custom paint on every surface of the bike, plus your own rim colors, trim colors, and tire options. It’s incredibly customizable to the point where you’re virtually guaranteed to be able to create a truly one-of-a-kind electric bike if you wish.

This e-bike sports a high-end German-manufactured Brose mid-drive motor and can hit speeds of up to 28 mph (45 km/h), yet is price similarly to much cheaper hub motor-based electric bikes.

It’s a perfect commuter e-bike for someone that wants high quality parts like that German mid-drive motor, 9-speed Shimano transmission, hydraulic disc brakes, bright LED lights, built in fenders, rear rack, and a very comfortable saddle.

This e-bike is easily worth another $500 more than the price tag, if not more. In fact, you’ll find many of these same components on e-bikes with $3,000-$4,000 price tags all over the place. So if you’re looking for a higher quality e-bike that doesn’t cost as much as a fancy bike shop e-bike, this is the one to consider.

The $2,199 Juiced Scorpion X has all the old-school charm of a vintage moped, but it adds back in a powerful electric drivetrain. It also has awesome-looking cast wheels that remove the issue of spoke maintenance, plus add to the cool stance.

The bench seat allows riders to scoot forward or backward to find the best seating position, and the tall bars give a fun cruiser/motorcycle feel to the bike. With full suspension, hydraulic disc brakes, and a built-in rear rack/fenders, there are a lot of nice parts on the Scorpion X

A powerful throttle lets you blast up to 20 mph, or engaging the pedal assist can take you even faster to 28 mph. And Juiced offers a larger battery than most competitors, letting you ride this moto-styled e-bike even further.

I love the $3,299 Priority Currentelectric bike so much that it has become one of my daily riders. It’s the one I grab when I’m doing city riding and I know I want to be pedaling.

Becuase it doesn’t have a throttle, you’ll need to enjoy pedaling in order to enjoy this e-bike. But it makes it so much fun to pedal thanks to a torque sensor-based pedal assist that provides natural feeling assistance up to a fast 28 mph top speed.

The internally geared rear hub combined with a Gates belt drive system and powerful hydraulic disc brakes make this a very nice e-bike for the price. Plus that mid-drive motor offers tons of torque for climbing hills or accelerating quickly.

Even with just one battery, the high capacity of 1,008 Wh makes these some of the biggest batteries in the e-bike industry. Combine that with a high power motor, tall handlebars, and a long bench seat, and you’ve got a seriously fun electric moped.

It doesn’t slouch on components either. The lighting is ultra bright and it features other nice parts like powerful hydraulic disc brakes and an included rack/fender setup.

The Tern Quick Haul is an electric cargo bike from famed cargo e-bike company Tern. It holds the distinction of being the most affordable model in Tern’s lineup.

That says a lot, because Tern is known for its high quality e-bikes that are built to be ridden everyday for real world errands, carpool duty and more. These e-bikes are meant to replace cars, and they do just that for many riders. With a huge list of accessories, you can outfit a Quick Haul for just about any job.

When it comes to fast, powerful electric mopeds on a budget, it’s hard to compete with the $2,399 Ariel Rider X-Class. This is the e-bike I usually recommend when someone simply wants the most power and speed for the least amount of money.

The impressive performance comes from a powerful 1,000W motor that actually puts out closer to 2,000W of peak power. It can be limited to 20 mph if you’d like, but I got it up to 36 mph in unlimited mode.

The bike rolls on 20″ moto-style wheels and comes with nice parts including hydraulic disc brakes, a bench seat, dual suspension, and a big moto-style headlight.

Technically the Rad Rover 6 Plus is priced at $1,999. And with its free shipping, it comes in under the $2k mark. But I’m including it in the $2k-$3k category because you’re going to want to add a couple of important accessories to this one.

Rad Power Bikes has one of the widest arrays of e-bike accessories on the planet. In fact, it might have THE widest selection. And I’d highly recommend adding the rear rack ($79) to the RadRover 6 Plus, at the very least. It simply adds even more utility and turns an adventure bike into an adventure/hauling bike.

Accessories aside, the RadRover 6 Plus is an awesome ride and packs in some real value. It is the highest-spec e-bike in Rad’s lineup and includes hydraulic disc brakes, redesigned suspension fork, an upgraded frame with a new semi-integrated battery, new displays that are easier to read and use, and so much more.

This is absolutely an e-bike that is worth checking out for anyone that does adventure-style riding and needs big tires combined with high power, and who wants the support and comfort provided by going with North America’s largest e-bike company.

VanMoof is known for making elegant and techie e-bikes that are designed for commuters and urban navigators. You won’t find giant tires or suspension or huge motors. What you will find is modest power combined with urban-centric features.

Lastly, VanMoof employs some awesome anti-theft features, such as a built-in kick lock and find my iPhone integration from Appleto help locate the e-bike if it goes missing.

These e-bikes either feature top-shelf components like drivetrain and brake parts, or pack in so much power that they couldn’t possibly be priced any lower.

Tern is renowned for building high-quality electric bikes that double down on utility features. The Tern HSD is the company’s more affordable utility e-bike, offering many features you’ll find on its higher end GSD but at a price that more riders can stomach.

The HSD uses small 20″ wheels and includes a folding stem, making it nice and compact. But taking it one step further, Tern outfitted it with its innovative rack that lets you park the bike on its tail, meaning it takes up barely more space than a coat rack in the corner of a room.

The bike’s Bosch mid-drive and high capacity batteries provide a high-end e-bike drive, and they are matched with a variety of performance drivetrain options that you can select from, depending on how high you want to spec the bike.

The CSC FT1000MD sounds like a motorcycle name because it comes from a company with motorcycle heritage. CSC Ebikes was born out of CSC Motorcycles, a company with several decades of two-wheeler experience.

The FT1000MD is the company’s highest power option. The fat tire e-bike comes with a 1,000+ watt motor known as the Bafang M620 Ultra. It’s the most powerful and highest torque e-bike mid-drive motor on the retail market. CSC paired it with a big battery, quality suspension, hydraulic brakes, built-in lighting, and more to create a high performance and high-quality adventure e-bike.

This incredible e-bike is really more of a small electric motorcycle. It uses two high-power motors – one in each wheel – to offer speeds in the mid 30’s and acceleration that will get you there in the blink of an eye.

Full suspension and hydraulic disc brakes make this an e-bike that handles well at any speed, and the bright red paint job looks as aggressive as the e-bike feels. It even comes with footpegs pre-installed so you can carry a passenger with you.

Plus it’s got double batteries to feed those two power-hungry motors, so you’ll be able to ride this e-bike pretty darn far too, as long as you aren’t too demanding from the throttle.

For more of a cruiser/city e-bike experience, the $4,800 Specialized Turbo Como SL is a great option. This e-bike offers a much more upright ride for a fun, relaxed vibe.

The e-bike features a high-quality mid-drive motor, hydraulic disc brakes, Gates carbon belt drive, and an eight-speed internally geared hub. Those are a lot of nice parts!

If you’ve been looking for a high-end trekking electric bike that was built with a combination of high-quality parts and the latest technology, look no further than the $4,550 Greyp T5.

It uses Greyp’s own in-house developed 700 Wh battery combined with a mid-drive motor to offer a hardtail trekking e-bike. In addition to the awesome bike design, the built-in tech is what really opens people’s eyes. Integrated cameras at the front and rear of the bike can serve as dash cams or livestream your rides. Plus you can capture all of your ride footage on the bike instead of bringing along a Go-Pro camera.

There’s also an app that allows you to take full advantage of the built-in eSIM card, giving you connectivity to the bike and letting you check all your vital stats, find its location, and more – right from your phone.

Fine, here they are. These are some of the most expensive e-bikes out there that we’ve tested and that I’d actually recommend someone buying, if you can pony up the cash.

The $5,495 Fuell Flluid is a great example of what happens when a motorcycle designer applies his tradecraft to a smaller platform, creating an e-bike built to a higher standard.

The Fuell Flluid’s smooth mid-drive motor, internally geared rear hub and Gates carbon belt drive setup combine to make an ultra-responsive and polished electric powertrain. The two removable batteries built into special cutouts in the frame offer long range riding without looking like a packhorse carrying massive batteries.

The e-bike is nearly maintenance free thanks to the belt drive and hydraulic disc brakes. The duo remove the two most common maintenance issues with bikes: chain wear and brake adjustment.

Flying fast at 28 mph (45 km/h) is a blast, and doing it on a smooth-riding e-bike with Pirelli tires is even better. Then add in the ultra-bright lights, built in fenders and rear rack, the suspension seat post, color LCD screen and other niceties, and now you’re left with a high-end e-bike that could serve you for years as a daily commuter e-bike designed for nearly maintenance-free high mileage riding. The only downside is that the bike is quite heavy at 36 kg (79 lb). But you can’t expect all these great parts and dual batteries on a featherweight bike!

When it comes to ultra premium folding electric bikes, there’s only one name that comes to my mind: GoCycle. These are the most impressive folding e-bikes I’ve ever seen. And they better be – they were designed by a former McLaren engineer.

Between the carbon fiber work, single-sided wheels, high-tech tires, trippy LED dot display, innovative rear suspension, and completely enclosed drivetrain, there’s a lot of high-end stuff going on here.

The speed will vary from 15-20 mph depending on which country you buy the bike in, but the performance is only part of the equation. The quick folding and light, compact design of the e-bike is the real winner here.

Serial 1, the electric bicycle company that spun out of Harley-Davidson, has several awesome electric bike models. While most fall under the $5,000 mark, I’m going to recommend their top of the line model: The $5,599 Serial 1 RUSH/CTY SPEED. If you’re in the market to buy a Serial 1 e-bike, you might as well go for the best.

Like all of Serial 1’s e-bikes, it’s got a great design and ridability. Serial 1 scored top e-bike designers from companies like Trek, so they know how to build an awesome bike with killer geometry. They also brought in the Harley-Davidson LiveWire electric motorcycle engineers to build the custom battery, so it’s top of the line too. Then they used pro parts like the Brose mid-drive and Gates carbon belt drive setup. Basically, it’s an incredible e-bike. And with a 28 mph (45 km/h) top speed plus a huge 706 Wh battery to ride all day, the performance matches the build.

Serial 1 even goes above and beyond with their own custom weight bearing fenders that also happen to be functional racks (both in the front and rear), their own custom designed lights that throw serious illumination up front and give you great rear visibility from dropout-mounted lights, and there’s even a glovebox in the bike!

Basically, there’s a lot to like here. Yes, it’s expensive. But you’re not just paying for the H-D name on the side. It’s actually a high quality, high performance electric bike regardless of the badging.

The FREY EX Pro is a high-end electric mountain bike with crazy high power. It uses the same motor as the CSC FT1000MD we featured above (the Bafang M620 mid-drive), but cranks up the current to provide closer to 1,500W of power.

It may be expensive, but it saves you several thousand dollars compared to many European electric mountain bikes with similar components but a fraction of the power in the FREY.

Parts like automatically engaging electric locks, 10-speed Shimano Deore transmissions, Magura MT5e quad-piston hydraulic disc brakes, and more set these e-bikes apart from the rest of the pack.

Seattle-based Rad Power Bikes announced earlier this month that prices for its electric bicycles models would be increasing. The move is forced by major pricing pressures on the e-bike industry, including rising costs of raw materials like aluminum, a weakening dollar/RMB exchange rate and sky-high shipping costs.

The RadRunner 2 model that was just unveiled earlier this month remains at $1,499, though it already saw a price increase from the RadRunner 1’s former $1,299 price.

The commuter-style RadCity and RadCity Step-Thru e-bikes both remain at their $1,599 prices, but the same can’t be said for the newly unveiled RadCity Plus.

The RadRover 6 Plus was unveiled a month before the RadCity 5 Plus, and both e-bikes ushered in a host of new features and higher quality parts, pushing the Rad lineup into more premium territory.

The RadRunner Plus, which is a higher-end version of the RadRunner and serves as a shorter cargo/utility e-bike, also gets a $100 increase to its new price of $1,899.

It’s always a sad day to see e-bike prices rising, especially after a rollercoaster few years that have witnessed prices rise and dip then rise again.

Rad has always been a moderately priced option that didn’t necessarily offer the best performance out there but came with solid quality and impressive service/support.

While the rest of the equation remains unchanged, the higher prices may significantly impact buying decisions, especially when some popular budget e-bike companies haven’t seemed to budge on their own low pricing.

And with the potential of an electric bike tax credit on the way for next year(though perhaps with less of a hope thanks to Joe Manchin), other e-bike companies may take this as even more of a signal.

Custom fenders, rear rack, reflective tires, and integrated lights make this folding electric fat bike commute ready. All of the add-ons fit well and don’t rattle or seem cheap. The bike is lighter and stiffer than previous generations, but still offers good comfort due to the higher volume 4″ knobby tires.

Safety is an important topic for me, but even more so when traveling because the environment may be unfamiliar, and when riding smaller bikes because you’re lower to the ground. For these reasons, I love that the RadExpand comes with puncture resistant reflective tires, a cheerful bell, bright integrated lights, and has a bright mode on the rear light when braking. The rear light housing is protected by the rack tubing, but not blocked. The front light has side cutouts to be visible from more angles. The frame comes in black or white, and the white would probably be safer when riding in low light conditions.

Rad Power Bikes custom engineers their frames and puts a lot of attention into the details of which components are used. Note the internally routed cables, gusset plates and welds to improve stiffness, large folding hinges and buckles with locks. They custom spec their batteries with high quality cells and custom designed the hub motor for power and efficiency.

I’ve always appreciated the high power of Rad Power Bikes motors, as well as their pedal assist plus throttle. The throttle can override any level of pedal assist to help you get started, climb easier, or catch up with a friend… all without having to click up or down on the pedal assist menu! Since the motors do exert high torque, and the frame is primarily aluminum alloy, it’s wonderful that they designed a small steel torque arm that’s mounted at the left rear dropout. This keeps the slotted motor axle from chewing into the frame over time.

Most Rad Power Bikes now use hub motors with left side cables that are tucked between the disc brake rotor and chain stay. This is a less vulnerable part of the bike, and it reduces clutter on the drivetrain side, near the derailleur. Even so, they still spec a steel derailleur guard! It came in handy for me during this review when the bike tipped over.

The steer post and handlebar were refined a bit for this model. Whereas before, the stem offered telescoping height and the handlebar was more flat, now the stem is fixed and the handlebar is a high rise. The result is that the bike feels sturdier and steering is more responsive, but you can still adjust the handlebar position and actually get more freedom for reach adjust. Note the extra long 390mm seat post that offers a range of fit options for small and medium sized riders. As with most folding ebikes, this one could feel a little cramped for super tall riders.

Rubberized ergonomic grips and saddle look great, don’t fill up with water, and provide good comfort. I’ve tested a bunch of seats, and this one is soft but not so wide that it will chaff your inner thighs when pedaling. It also has a handle built into the back that helps when lifting and folding the bike!

Some folding bikes do not provide a rubber band, magnets, or straps to help keep them from unfolding during transport, but the RadExpand does not! It comes with a very thick Velcro cinch strap! You could still use your own bungee cords or get an adjustable one like this to keep the bike extra secure when transporting in a car, boat, plane, RV, etc. but the Velcro strap is already above average in my opinion. I often place a towel or t-shirt between the frame components when folding and transporting to further reduce scratches, chips, and rattling noise. Some owners have purchased large plastic tubs to store the bikes that help to keep their cars clean and make lifting easier, and they posted about it in the forums here.

I appreciate that Rad Power Bikes is using the same battery pack for many of their ebike models because it allows you to loan them or find replacements more easily. Sure, the battery isn’t paint matched and isn’t hidden inside the frame like fancier bikes… but it’s also a lot less expensive, and it offers some cool locking features. You can turn the bike off while the battery is still locked to the frame if you wish.

You can charge the battery pack on or off the bike frame, and it is separate from the motor controller (which is bolted behind the seat tube). This reduces overheating and further reduces the cost of replacement batteries, since they are simpler. For best results, I have heard that you should store the battery in a cool, dry location. Extreme heat can damage the cells and extreme cold will stunt them and limit your range temporarily.

I love that Rad Power Bikes includes threaded eyelets on the steer tube for their optional front rack, on the downtube for a bottle cage or other accessory, and on their rear rack for mounting trays and baskets. There’s so much utility here, and the weight rating of the bike is pretty good at 275lbs with 59.6lbs on the rear rack and 30lbs on the optional front rack (which would subtract from the 275lbs).

I love that the optional front rack is frame-mounted so it won’t interfere as much with steering or tip the bike sideways when parked, like fork mounted racks often do. If you add this rack however, it does change how the headlight is mounted, and fixes it straight inline with the bike frame vs. turning as the bike turns.

The company has so many great accessories, including a large LCD display panel with built-in USB charging port. I love their colored pedals, baskets, pannier bags, child seat, and suspension seat post. All of these parts are identified on the website and list which bikes are compatible (most), and the customer support is generally very quick if you need clarification or confirmation.

I appreciate how approachable and stable the frame is. With such a low standover height, I didn’t have to tip the bike to one side in order to step over the frame. Once situated, the fat tires allowed me to kick off and begin pedaling without feeling too tippy, and I was able to ride no-handed very easily without any speed wobble.

The LED display panel is simple, but easy to understand and use. There are only four buttons, and the minus key doubles as walk mode activation, but they are well labeled. I appreciate that there’s a stand-alone lights button for de-activating the lights, because sometimes that’s nice when riding with friends or if you don’t want to ruin your night vision.

The RadMini models use a high-resolution 14 pulse cadence sensors, which makes starting and stopping more predictable. It’s a low profile design, that is less likely to get kicked or bumped when riding off-road. I love that they also included motor inhibitors on both brake levers, which immediately cut power to the motor for safety and reduced brake pad wear. It seems like they really dialed in the controller settings too, because the motor is smooth and predictable when starting vs. delayed or jerky.

While motor power differs depending on geography, Rad Power Bikes targeted the highest legal output. They also designed the half-grip twist throttle to perform as a twist-assist power increase mechanism for European customers. This means that although you need to continue pedaling for it to work, you basically get full power instantly vs. having to click the plus button repeatedly on the display panel. I think it’s actually safer, less distracting, and more intuitive than pedal assist without twist assist… and it’s useful to catch up to friends or cross a street easily before dropping back to a more efficient use of power.

The kickstand well positioned, clear of the left crank arm so you won’t get pedal lock when backing up the bike if it’s deployed. It has a wide plastic platform at the bottom to keep it from sinking in to soft terrain, and it works well if you’re loading the bike with gear.

Both wheels are built with 36 spokes using thicker 13 gauge wire for increased durability and weight capacity. I like that Rad chose to paint the motor casing, front hub, spokes, and rims black to match. In fact, all of the posts, bars, brake lines, fenders, and other little hardware pieces are black! Finally, they paint match the steel fork to match whichever color of bike you choose so it looks cohesive.

Above-average drivetrain for the price. You get a standard steel chainring with 48 teeth, but it has a plastic guide to prevent drops (especially when folded). The freewheel is 14 to 32 tooth vs. 14 to 28 tooth. Rad Power Bikes used to offer well-known Shimano parts on prior generations of this electric bicycle, but I actually liked the microSHIFT triggers they moved to because they require less reaching and finger pressure. I’m not sure if this move had to do with supply chain constraints, but the result is very acceptable.

I think the standard free shipping is a great option, and Rad Power Bikes has updated their box to include some fun artistic graphics that look fun and could be colored in by the artistic types, or their kids.

The company is growing its shop locations where you can test ride bikes, buy refurbished ones, get help with assembly, maintenance, and accessories. For most major cities, they partner with Velofix mobile delivery or have their own Rad Mobile Services vans that can drop your bike off for a bit of extra money. It’s nice to have that in person service considering how low the price point is for this and some of their other ebike models.

Earlier this month Rad Power Bikes announced they were increasing prices on some Rad Power Bikes models. According to the company, it has become much more expensive to build and ship their electric bikes. The cost increase is not specific to Rad Power Bikes or even the electric bike industry. Costs are going up and consumers are paying more for products. Let’s take a look at the price increases and below I’ll give my analysis. Changes are highlighted in bold.

As expected many of the models that I considered to be great buys went up in price. The RadMini was in my opinion the best value in the Rad Power Bikes fleet at $1,299. At the new price $1,499 it matches the price of the RadRunner 2 which was recently announced. Learn more about the RadMini on the Rad Power Bikes website.

We also saw the RadMission price rise $200 which is maybe the biggest surprise. There is a lot of competition at the $1000 price point and at the new price, it is more expensive than some electric bikes it competes with. It also makes the bike less accessible to those looking for a quality ebike at an affordable price. At this price, shoppers may also want to look at spending more to get one of the models with a bigger battery, suspension, LCD screen, and more powerful motor. See our RadMission review or take a look on the Rad Power Bikes’ website.

Back when the RadCity 5 Plus was announced I was surprised to see it priced $200 less than the RadRover Plus. At $1,799 it was a fantastic deal when looking at the entire Rad lineup. With the price increases, both Plus models are now $1,999. Both are solid electric bikes and I am a big fan of the semi-integrated battery, improved motors, hydraulic disc brakes, and dual LCD displays. Check out our RadCity 5 Plus and RadRover 6 Plus reviews or check out Rad’s website for more information.

The RadRunner Plus received just an incremental price increase of $100. At $1,899 it is now $400 more than the newly announced RadRunner 2. Still, if you want a blend of a cargo and moped-style ebike in a smaller package compared to the RadWagon, then the RadRunner Plus is a great choice. Compared to the RadRunner 2, you’ll enjoy the additional benefits of the LCD display, suspension, 7-speed derailleur, fenders, premium headlight, and included passenger package found on the RadRunner Plus. Check out our RadRunner 2 review. Dig more into the RadRunner Plus and RadRunner 2.

The RadWagon continues to be my personal favorite ebike in the Rad Power Bikes fleet. Its cargo-carrying capability is unmatched. Plus if you have kids it becomes even more of a mini-van replacement. It too received a $100 price increase to put it in line with the Plus models. Learn more in our RadWagon 4 review or check it out on the Rad Power Bikes’ website.

While it’s never nice to see price increases it is the reality of the current supply chain and increased costs of manufacturing electric bikes. Hopefully, these prices stay intact throughout 2022. But here’s the deal -- while your LCD display is technically a screen, it’s not going to remind you about any meetings. It’s just there to help you get the most out of your ride.

To celebrate the launch of the LCD upgrade that"s now available for the RadRunner, here"s a quick guide to help you better understand your display"s features.

The liquid crystal displays (cool, right?!) on our bikes showcase all the important information you need while riding, from the amount of charge left on your battery to the number of miles under your belt.

You interact with the display using the three buttons on the "display remote" on the left side of the handlebar, which includes a mode button along with Up and Down arrows.

The Radometer can also help you keep tabs on your ebike"s health. Compare your mileage total with our suggested maintenance schedule and see if it"s time to take your two-wheeled friend in for a check-up.

The wattmeter usually gets less attention than the rest of the display features, but it can be a handy way to get a sense of how much power is helping push you along.

It"s fun to see just how much power our bikes put out on any given ride. A cyclist pedaling at full capacity for 20 minuteson a conventional bike maintains a power output of about 164 watts. An average Tour De France cyclist (oxymoron?) generates about 429 watts. How does your ride compare?

Your LCD Get-Around System also makes it easy to answer that burning question about how fast you"re going. (To comply with speed regulations on any given trail, of course ...)

Our Class 2 ebikes can go up to 20 mph (U.S. spec, 32 km/h in Canada). How does that stack up against riders on conventional bikes? Well, most experienced riders hit their stride between 15-20 mph.

Is that relevant to your ride? No.Does it give us an excuse to share some of the cute Rad Pets pics that we have floating around Rad Power Bikes HQ?You better believe it.

Some e-bikes, regardless of the motor, have a separate, typically twist throttle on a handle, like you’d find on a motorcycle. That enables you to move without pedaling. This is handy for quick takeoff, but it uses a lot more battery, which limits the range of your motor and the amount of exercise you get.

Nate Bosscher, a senior engineer on the e-bikes team at Trek, says the motor on a mid-drive e-bike is “upstream of the gears and the chain, and that certainly puts more strain on the drivetrain than a non-e-bike.” You can reduce the wear and tear on the drivetrain by regular cleaning and lubrication, he says.

Whether you’re riding a mid- or hub-drive e-bike, you should downshift to an easier gear ahead of a traffic light. That’s so you can resume pedaling without having to “mash” or stand on the pedals to make the bike move, Bosscher says.

You also don’t want to stand on the pedals with maximum force while trying to shift, which is especially hard on the bike’s transmission, Bosscher adds. This is true whether you’re shifting at a slower speed or flying down the road. And it’s always best to lighten your pedaling as you shift gears to reduce wear on the cluster and chain.

Marco Sonderegger, a senior product manager at Specialized, says that the best pedaling speed on the company’s mid-drive bikes is 70 to 90 rpm, which means your legs are moving like a fast jog. That typically puts less stress on the chain because you’re not putting a lot of torque on the system with each pedal stroke.

Trek’s Bosscher says most e-bike manufacturers gear their motors for pedaling speeds of at least 60 rpm. For this reason, Sonderegger believes spinning at 70 to 90 rpm will increase your range roughly 10 to 12 percent compared with mashing at 50 rpm or slower.

This article compares some top-quality Himiway ebikes with some electric bikes of Rad Power. This comparison would give you an idea of the details of the various features and specifications of both ebike brands.

Rad Power Bikes are built for speed and have nearly a dozen or several ebikes for different purposes. The electric bike"s speed ranges between 25 to 50 miles. On the other hand,Himiway"s long-range ebike techadvances their ebikes to offer longer ranges from 60 to 80 miles per single charge.

The Himiway brand prides itself in providing high-quality products to its customers. Even all the bike"s frames are made with 6061 aluminum. The electric bikes weigh between 72 and 79lbs and have between 330 and 400lb payload capacity. Each Himiway bikes have an LCD to give riders detailed information on their speed, pedal assist, range, etc., plus a USB port that can charge mobile phones.

TheHimiway Cruiser long-range fat tire electric bikeis a long-distance fat tire electric bike and one of the most known models by Himiway. It offers unmatched comfort and outstanding flexibility in challenging cycling environments. With the Himiway cruiser, you can go up to 60 miles with its 750W geared hub motor and removable 48V 17.5Ah Samsung/LG battery. Also, itsKenda 26-inch fat tiresprovide excellent grip and mechanical stability. If you want an efficient ebike that can ride on different terrains, you should consider the Himiway Crusier, as it comes in two frames.

Irrespective of the Himiway Cruiser being more expensive than Radcity 4 High-Step, it covers more grounds and has upgraded features. The RadCity 4 High-step has its limits on the range with a 48V 14Ah battery.

TheHimiway Zebra Premium All-terrain Electric Fat Bikeis another fat tire ebike with a combination of throttle and pedal assist, and this bike can travel 60–80 miles on a single charge. Thanks to an updated 750-watt motor that offers excellent heat dissipation and high-temperature resistance. Himiway Zebra has a strong frame, 48V 20Ah Samgsung/LG Lithium-ion Battery, and hydraulic disc brake. Compared to the Zebra ebike, the RadCity 5 Plus High Step has a shorter range.

The RadCity 5 Plus High step provides riders an enjoyable riding experience irrespective of their height. The frame design also helps a smoother, safer ride for optimum pedal efficiency. However, these don’t come near to the superior features of the Himiway Zebra. More obviously stated in the table below, some of the significant differences between these ebikes are their battery capacity, price, payload, range, and weight.

TheHimiway Cobra Electric Mountain Bikeand the RadRover 6 Plus Step-Thru ebikes are both mountain bikes. With a motor capacity of 750W, the Himmiway Cobra runs smoothly on bumpy surfaces as it has a four-bar linkage suspension feature. Also, its tires are currently the largest in the market. TheCobra"s hydraulic disc brakesand 7-speed transmission operate similarly. Also, the Cobra"s 4.8′′ super fat tires elevate off-road riding to a new level.

The RadRover 6 Plus Step-Thru"s frame distinguishes it from RadPower"s previous Ebikes. Its upgraded hydraulic disc brakes require little effort and are easy to use during usage. Although it"s a mountain bike, its maximum speed is lesser than the  Himiway Cobra.

Himiway scales the summits where others fear to thread. The creation of each bike product ensures riders can go further and farther. While each person may have different reasons forpurchasing the electric bike, Himiway has ebike models based on your interest. Thus, some other electric bikes by Himiway are as follows:

TheHimiway Escape Pro Long-Range Moped-style Electric Bikehas a 48V Samsung battery and fat tires. Its multifunctional LCDs have all the parameters you need while riding. Its incredible braking performance and stability are provided by its dual suspension and fat tires.

Himiway offers aLong-Range All-Terrain Step-Thru Electric Bikemodel of the cruiser bike to give riders exceptional comfort as they ride. These bikes have almost the same features as the Himiway Cruiser.

The Himiway and RadPower have pretty some similarities. These include; mechanical disc brakes, a 6061 aluminum frame, and a motor. When you look closer, you will quickly see that these bikes have slightly different specifications.

Himiway bikesare excellent for riders, making cycling more stable in all road conditions. You don"t have to look for commuter or cargo ebikes as Himiway has a seven range of bikes. The brand is easily one of the most well-liked mid-range e-bikes by maintaining a position among the best in terms of its features and product quality. eBikes at everywhere. But how do you find the right eBike for you? How about we start with ever-popular Rad Power Bikes and their flagship RadRover 5? Keep reading our honest Rad Power Bike RadRover 5 Review to learn all about the amazing Rad Rover and what makes it the most popular electric fat tire bike in North America.

Warning, this is RadRover 5 Review is one of the longest reviews we’ve ever posted, so feel free to use the table of context if there’s a certain area you want to dive deeper into. Or, you can just watch the video review of the RadRover 5 here:

I’ve always wanted an eBike. I really don’t have a logical reason for them, except for living in one of the country’s most cycle-friendly cities. Shoot, we even have a famous beer made here called Fat Tire.

I either work from home or on an airplane, so I don’t need a commuter. My little ones are 2 and 4 when writing this – so the little ones aren’t avid bikers… yet. In short, I’m not a “bike snob” or even a bike expert. I just wanted a fun bike that my kids could ride with me, and I could get outside more.

eBikes are an interesting combination of the best of bicycles, motorcycles, and mopeds. In the US, eBikes are limited at 20 MPG to be classified as eBikes, but they are unique because they can be 100% pedal-powered, too. They come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and even prices. They range from $300 – $5,000+ and come from brands you’ve heard of, like Trek, to cheap Chinese knockoffs.

The one thing that all eBikes have in common is an electric motor. These electric motors assist you in pedaling the bike – or some eBikes can be used in a throttle-only mode. The Rad Power Bikes all have throttle-only abilities and can also provide different levels of pedal assist.

All Rad Power Bikes come with a display on your left handlebar stem which allows you to set how much power is delivered through pedaling while riding so that you don’t have to worry about missing control of your speed.

Once you get used to pedal-assist at level 1, you can experiment with higher settings, which go from giving you just a tad more help to put a whole lot of GO behind each stroke (up to 750 watts in the U.S. — the equivalent of 1 horsepower!).

When you stop pedaling, the pedal-assist stops working, so you’ll never have to worry about losing any control. Another great feature on this eBike: the pedal-assist AND throttle stop working if you apply the brake (either front or back).

The Rad Power Bikes RadRover 5 is a fat tire electric bike with an aluminum frame, front suspension fork, and mechanical disc brakes. At $1,700, it sits right in the middle of higher-end eBikes and cheap eBikes – but Rad Power Bikes really tried to strike the balance between quality, cost, and features. This bad boy is designed to be seen – and ridden – in a wide variety of environments. From city streets to mountain biking, the RadRover is truly a versatile eBike.

The RadRover 5 has SUPER fat tires – 4 inches – designed to work on any terrain: from paved city streets or gravel paths in the park – all while still being comfortable for riders of different sizes.

Made from a layer of aramid and ceramic particles inside the tire under the tread, the Kenda K-Shield integrated tire liner is a line of defense designed to provide extra protection against punctures from thorns, glass, and other small materials. More on why the RadRover 5 has fat tires down below.

A 48V, 14 Ah Lithium-Ion Batteryremovable battery pack so it can be charged off your home outlet or on the bike (it’s also upgradeable and replaceable). This battery give you 45+ miles of range on a single charge

275 lb Payload Capacity– that includes the rider (obviously) and any other cargo – either in a basket or being pulled (or on the bike, like my son here on child’s seat).

The large backlit LCD display has a charge indicator, speedometer, odometer, and trip meter to help keep you aware of how far away from home. It also includes pedal assist level (low-high), wattmeter, and more!

The Rad Power Bike RadRover 5 is an eBike on steroids. Huge in size and with the look of an indestructible beast, it’s made for all-terrain adventures that only those who are brave enough can take up… and trips to the store, too.

The RadRover 5 isn’t just your average bike; this one is built to EXPLORE! It looks like it would be too big to maneuver around town or through tight trails, but I assure you, there’s nothing better than feeling safe as you hit speeds of 20 MPH while riding down slopes in search of new adventure destinations no matter where they may lead us along the way.

The RadRover 5 weighs an astonishing 69 pounds without any accessories. That’s a heavy bike! To put that into perspective, most regular bikes weigh anywhere from about 35 – 45 pounds – it’s twice as big.

But with great size comes a lot of features that you won’t find on other eBikes. A couple of features make this bike much larger than other comparable eBikes; let’s dive into how the RadRover 5 compares to other eBikes.

Besides the tires, the RadRover 5 still has some unique features to other eBikes. Just got fun, I decided to compare it to a couple of other popular eBikes, the KBO Breeze and the Sondors X for this RadRover 5 Review:

As you can see, all of the eBikes are just a little bit different! Of course, you can’t compare Apple to Apples or Rad Power Bikes to KBO bikes or Sondor bikes directly – that would be too easy, right?! They all have slightly different specs.

I will actually be reviewing the KBO Breeze eBike soon to give you my honest review. The main thing I’m interested in is the motor. Will I be able to notice the motor has fewer watts? I’ll keep you posted!

I love Rad Power Bikes because they have a super-active Facebook community AND a ton of branded accessories. I’m not really all about “brands,” per se. However, if I’m going to spend more than $1,500 on a bike, I want i
