The Apple Cinema Display is a line of flat-panel computer monitors developed and sold by Apple Inc. between 1999 and 2011. It was initially sold alongside the older line of Studio Displays, but eventually replaced them. Apple offered 20, 22, 23, 24, 27 and 30-inch sizes, with the last model being a 27-inch size with LED backlighting.

There have been three designs for the Cinema Display, one featuring polycarbonate plastic and two featuring anodized aluminum. The first displays were designed to match the colorful plastic of the Power Mac G3 and later the Power Mac G4, while the second revisions were designed to match the aluminum aesthetics of the Power Mac G5 and PowerBook G4. The last available design matched the unibody laptops released in October 2008.

The Apple Cinema Display name was retired in July 2011 with the introduction of the Apple Thunderbolt Display, and the Cinema Display models were no longer offered on the Apple Store website as of August 2014.

The first model—the 22-inch Apple Cinema Display—was introduced in September 1999 alongside the Power Mac G4 and used DVI for video input. It was enclosed in a high-density plastic frame with an easel-style stand and had a display resolution of 1600×1024.

It was eventually replaced by a 20-inch model on January 28, 2003, that sported a widescreen display with up to 1680×1050 resolution and a brightness of 230 cd/m2.

The 20" Cinema Display was updated again June 28, 2004 to match the aluminum design of the new Cinema HD Display. It retained the 1680x1050 resolution of the previous model but saw its brightness increased to 250 cd/m2, and was introduced at a $1,299 USD price point.

The 23-inch model, dubbed the "Cinema HD Display," was introduced on March 20, 2002, and supported full 1:1 1080p playback on a 1920x1200 pixel display.

On June 28, 2004, Apple introduced a redesigned line of Cinema Displays, along with a new 30-inch model that, like the 23-inch model, carried the "Cinema HD Display" name. The new models had an anodized aluminum enclosure that matched Apple"s high-end lines of professional products. An alternative stand or a wall mount could be used with a VESA mount adapter kit that was sold separately. Though the display enclosures had not been redesigned for a long period of time, several "silent" improvements were made to the brightness levels and contrast ratios.

Due to the high resolution (2560×1600), the 30-inch model requires a graphics card that supports dual-link DVI. When the monitor was released, no Macintosh models were sold with a dual-link DVI port. A Power Mac G5 with the new Nvidia GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL graphics card was initially required to run the display at full resolution.

All Power Mac G5, PowerBook G4 15 or 17 inch and Mac Pro Mid 2006 to Mid 2010 models are capable of supporting it without the use of any adapters. Discrete MacBook Pros are also capable of driving the 30-inch display, while all Macs released after October 2008 require an additional adapter. The 30-inch Cinema Display was introduced together with the GeForce 6800, which supports two DVI-DL ports. ATI"s aftermarket AGP X800 Mac Edition also supports dual-link DVI, but has only one port. The Radeon 9600 Mac/PC was another aftermarket graphics card that supported dual-link DVI and was also compatible with older AGP-based Power Macs.

On October 14, 2008, the 20-inch Cinema Display and the 23-inch Cinema HD Display were replaced with a 24-inch model made with aluminum and glass, reflecting the appearances of the latest iMac, MacBook Pro and unibody MacBook designs. The display features a built-in iSight camera, microphone and dual speaker system. A MagSafe cable runs from the back of the display for charging notebooks. It is the first Cinema Display to use LED backlighting and Mini DisplayPort for video input; however, the LED backlighting is edge-lit as opposed to the fully back-lit CCFL of the previous models, resulting in a lower brightness cd/m2 output. This display is only officially compatible with Macs that have the Mini DisplayPort connector. A third-party converter must be used in order to use this display with older Macs. Furthermore, many newer Apple users with newer MacBooks that solely have USB-C ports have been continuously perplexed by the fact that their Apple-branded Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 adapters do not transmit a signal to their LED Cinema displays. Many users have mistakenly presumed their new MacBooks were incompatible with their older displays, when in fact an ordinary generic USB-C to Mini DisplayPort adapter will successfully transmit the same signal; This is due to a small internal difference in the newer Thunderbolt 2 and the older Mini DisplayPort standards.

With the introduction of LED panels, the matte, anti-glare screen panels were retired, except for the 30" Cinema Display. Apple had already moved away from matte screens in its line of iMac desktop computers on August 7, 2007. Apple had not offered any equipment with a matte, anti-glare screen after the 15" non-Retina MacBook Pro was discontinued in October 2013 until the introduction of the Pro Display XDR in 2019. This had been a cause for concern among users who wanted matte screens for their area of work, particularly graphic designers, photographers and users who extensively view their screens.ease-of-use.

On July 26, 2010, the 24-inch LED Cinema Display and the 30-inch Cinema HD Display were replaced by a 27-inch model that supports up to 2560×1440 resolution. This model was sold for $999 USD.

On August 7, 2006 the Aluminium Cinema displays had a silent upgrade that boosted the brightness and contrast ratios to 300/400 cd/m2 and 700:1. The last Cinema displays are still desirable to professionals being the last anti-glare displays made by Apple (until the Pro Display XDR) and having a true IPS 8-bit (no dithering) fully back-lit panel and slightly higher brightness than that of the newer Apple Thunderbolt displays, which have a reflective glossy screen and an edge-lit panel. These displays (including the LED Cinema 24”) are the last Apple desktop monitors made in 16:10 aspect ratio that is also used on MacBook Pros and provides more vertical work space.

The Apple 22-inch Cinema Display is designed to match the Power Mac G4/400, G4/450, and G4/500. It features a 22-inch (1600x1024) letterbox format active-matrix LCD display with 16.7 million colors, a 160 degree viewing angle, DVI connector, and two USB ports integrated into the clear display.

Thanks to a DVI connector on each and every Apple Cinema Display, PC users can now enjoy the fabulous design and stunning image quality that Apple aficionados have been luxuriating in since the iMac. The 23-inch Cinema HD Display LCD, in particular, is a looker. It"s so lovely that we"re willing to forgive its high price, limited adjustability, and lack of video inputs. In fact, hooking it up to a comparatively hideous Intel-based PC feels like such a crime that we"re beginning to suspect an ulterior motive on Apple"s part. How much was that

The simple design, however, limits the adjustments you can make to the display panel. The neck height is fixed, so very tall users may have to set the Cinema Display on a riser (though it"s almost painful to contemplate sullying the display"s minimalist appearance with such a device). This generation of Cinema Displays marks Apple"s return to a DVI connection (after years of using a proprietary ADC connection), making the Cinema HD Display PC compatible. Also, for the first time, the new Cinema Displays are compatible with VESA mounts, allowing you to attach the monitors to walls. But unlike many jumbo LCDs that incorporate home entertainment features such as picture-in-picture, a TV tuner, or composite and S-Video ports, the Cinema Display provides only two USB and two FireWire ports. We"re willing to forgive these omissions because this LCD looks so pretty, but you should know that you can get these video extras in a 23-inch LCD (such as the Planar PX212M or the HP L2035) that costs several hundred dollars less than the Apple Cinema HD Display.

If you"re using the Cinema Display with a Wintel machine, the only adjustment you can make to the display"s image is to its brightness. The touch-sensitive brightness-control buttons are nestled out of sight along the right-side edge of the panel (below the power button) and blend perfectly with the white plastic end pieces. Luckily, the image quality is so good that the average Wintel user won"t miss the ability to tweak contrast or individual color values. When we hooked it up to our Power Mac G4, we were able to tweak the image using Apple"s Display Calibrator Assistant. CNET Labs" DisplayMate intensity and grayscale test screens revealed some obvious color-tracking errors; very light grays have a distinctly pinkish hue. Otherwise, we see very little hue shift in the Cinema HD Display"s nicely linear progression from black to white. Our only other criticism is one that"s common for LCDs: there"s a fair amount of ghosting in high-contrast test screens; the display seems to have trouble switching from black to gray and back to black again without leaving reverse video trails. But overall, the display looks stunning: colors are vibrant and warm, details are crisply rendered, and video looks quite smooth and free of noise. (Video playback looks even better when you hook the display up to a G5.) Text also looks very sharp, with excellent contrast; the monitor does a great job reproducing pure, bright whites and dark blacks.

Given that the Cinema HD Display is significantly more expensive than competing LCDs, we"re disappointed with its skimpy one-year warranty. The industry standard for LCDs is three years--appropriate for a piece of hardware that costs $2,000.

On June 28, 2004, Apple introduced a series of three LCD monitors: the 20-inch Cinema Display, the 23-inch Cinema HD Display, and the 30-inch Cinema HD Display. The power cable is fed by an external AC adapter, and the USB and FireWire cables can be plugged into your computer to enable the built-in USB and FireWire hubs on the back of the monitor. You can adjust the brightness using the capacitive buttons of the right side of the monitor.

The 23-inch model was discontinued in 2008 and replaced with the 24-inch LED Cinema Display which featured a glossy screen and an LED backlight, as well as a built-in webcam and microphone. It also had a MagSafe charging cable for use with Apple notebook computers. The 20-inch model was discontinued in 2009 and not replaced. The 30-inch model was discontinued in July of 2010, being replaced by the 27-inch LED Cinema Display which, other than size, was identical in features to the earlier 24-inch model.

In late 2005, Apple silently updated the LCD panels on all three displays, but didn"t change product names or even model numbers. The updated 30-inch model had an increased brightness of 400 cd/m² and contrast ratio of 700:1.

The Apple Cinema Display (23-inch, aluminum) is meant to complement the Apple hi-end products, such as the Power Macintosh G5 and PowerBook G4 models. It has an anodized aluminum casing with a slight bezel, and is mounted on an aluminum stand with an adjustable hinge.

This display also meets the Electronics Standards Association’s (VESA) mounting interface standard, and can be mounted on a wall or an articulating arm. It is an active-matrix LCD matte display, and comes with a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels, with an integrated two port USB hub, two FireWire “400” ports and the industry standard DVI (Digital Video Interface) socket. Thus, the Apple Cinema Display (23-Inch, Aluminum) is compatible not only with a Macintosh, but also with an IBM desktop.

The Apple Cinema Display has an outboard power supply, which may warp, but otherwise, has a thorough design. Power supplies are available, so a user can replace the damaged ones, if needed.

To use their 23-inch Apple Cinema Display, users needed Mac OS X v10.2.8 or later, and one of the following computers – the Power Mac G5, the Power Mac G4 with a DVI port, or the PowerBook with a DVI port. To update the software, the user should choose Apple (K) > System Preferences, click Software Update, and then click Check N.

If the owner had an iSight camera, he or she could mount the camera on top of the 23-inch Cinema display using one of the stands that came with the camera. The iSight stand has a tilt-and-swivel mechanism, so users could capture video at the best possible angle. All the user needed was to plug the FireWire cable from the camera into a FireWire port on the back of the display or computer (The iSight stand contains a magnet that might erase the data on a hard disk drive or iPod. To preserve the data, Apple suggests that the user keeps these and other magnetic media away from the iSight stand, and the top of their Cinema displays.

Alternate Display Attachments: Apple suggested that it was possible to attach the 23-inch Cinema display to alternate mounting solutions using the VESA Mount Adapter kit, which is available from the Apple Store. It was quite easy to use the kit to prepare the display for attachment to many different VESA-compatible mounting solutions. All the user has to do was simply follow the instructions included with the kit.

Apple advised against cleaning the screen with a cleaner containing alcohol or acetone. The company recommended instead, to use a cleaner intended for use with an LCD (liquid crystal display). Apple Inc. also warned never to spray cleaner directly on the screen, as it might drip inside the display and cause an electric shock.

Apple also recommended to use only the power adapter that came with your display and the AC cord that came with your power adapter. Adapters and cords for other electronic devices may look similar, but using them can affect your display’s performance, or even damage the display. The AC power cord has a three-wire grounding plug (a plug that has a third grounding pin) that will fit only a grounded AC outlet. Apple suggested that if a user was unable to insert the plug into an outlet because the outlet is not grounded, he or she should contact a licensed electrician to replace the outlet with a properly grounded outlet.

Ergonomics: Apple Inc. recommended the following guidelines to assure the perfect relationship between the user and his or her 23-inch Cinema Display: Here are some guidelines for adjusting your display to reduce glare, as well as to accommodate your physical size and shape: Arrange the display so the top of the screen is slightly below eye level when you’re sitting at the keyboard. The best distance from your eyes to the screen is up to you, although most people seem to prefer 18 to 28 inches. Then, position the display by tilting it up or down, in order to minimize glare and reflections on the screen from overhead lights and nearby windows.
