SEOUL, April 27 (Reuters) - LG Display Co Ltd (034220.KS) saw first-quarter profit plummet far below forecasts and warned of a further drop in panel prices as pandemic-driven demand for TVs, smartphones and laptops fades and competition heats up.

The South Korean Apple Inc (AAPL.O) supplier said it would shift its focus to higher-end products and gradually lower production of more commoditised LCD TV panels where it lacked a competitive advantage over cheaper Chinese rivals.

The LCD TV market shrank by more than 10% in the first quarter and Chinese competitors are pricing their products lower than LG Display"s expectations, Lee Tai-jong, head of the company"s large display marketing division, said on a call with analysts.

"Margins have been squeezed chiefly due to panel price declines and weaker demand, as consumers have already bought many screens during COVID-19 in the past two years," said Kim Yang-jae, an analyst at DAOL Investment & Securities.

The source was not authorised to speak to media and declined to be identified. LG Display declined to comment on client matters. BOE and Apple did not respond immediately to requests for comment.

In the first quarter, prices of 55-inch liquid crystal display (LCD) panels for TV sets fell 16% from the previous quarter while prices of LCD panels for notebooks and monitors dropped by around 7% to 11%, according to data from TrendForce"s WitsView.

SEOUL/TAIPEI/TOKYO -- With windfalls from COVID-19 fading, LG Display is grappling with a record loss as sinking demand, supply chain issues and advancements by Chinese rivals threaten its long-term position in the market.

LG Display said Wednesday that group revenue sank 6% on the year in July-September to 6.77 trillion won ($4.72 billion). Operating loss for the quarter totaled a record 759 billion won, in contrast to the profit of 529 billion won from a year earlier.

LG Display Co, Ltd (NYSE: LPL) reported a third-quarter FY22 revenue decline of 6% year-on-year to KRW 6.77 trillion. Operating loss was KRW (759) billion. LG Display announced its financial results for Q2 2022, with a net loss of around $290 million (down from a profit of around $320 million a year ago) as the company"s sales dropped 14.6%.

LGD says that the loss was due to weak demand for TV and IT displays, coupled with supply chain issues and the lockdowns in China. LGD says it plans to continue and reduce its LCD TV business, and to stop LCD production in Korea in 2023, earlier than expected before. The company will focus instead on OLED TV panels and the automotive market, and will aim to open up new markets for transparent and gaming OLEDs.

Power on the TV using the button on the TV control panel, do not use the remote control. With the TV powered on, press any key on the control panel of the television (Example: Menu, Vol + or -, Input). Does any menu or on screen display appear?

Analysts said aggressive marketing by leaders Sonyand Samsung Electronicsin the key North American TV market threatened the market share of LG Display"s client brands, such as Philips, LG Electronicsand Vizio.

"LG Display"s clients will inevitably take a hit from Sony and Samsung"s aggressive price cuts," said Park Sang-Hyun, an analyst at CJ Investment & Securities.

LG Display reported on Thursday a record operating profit in the usually slow January-March quarter, helped by tight panel supplies and surging demand for flat-screen televisions ahead of the Olympics in Beijing in August.

However, chief financial officer James Jeong warned that Sony"s price-driven marketing could affect LCD screen prices and sales in the second quarter.

Meanwhile, shareholder and major client Philips Electronicssaid this week it would transfer its struggling North American TV business to Japan"s Funai Electric, triggering worries that LG Display could lose screen orders for the market.

The LCD TV market is seeing stronger-than-expected demand for small-size sets as consumers switch to sleeker TVs from bulky tubes at ever-faster rates, Kwon said.

South Korea-based LG Display is set to start mass production from its new "eighth-generation" production line early in 2009, when the market is expected to tilt toward an oversupply.

Kwon said the mass production could start one or two months earlier than the original schedule of March or April. "Lots of panels from the 8G line should go to China," Kwon said.

LG Display posted 881 billion won ($903 million) in first-quarter operating profit on a consolidated basis, against a 208 billion won loss a year earlier. Net profit came to 717 billion won against a 169 billion won loss a year earlier.

In the fourth quarter of 2007, Sony jumped four spots to become No. 1 in LCD TV shipments in North America with 12.8 percent market share. Samsung ranked second with 12.3 percent, followed by Vizio with 10.8 percent, according to DisplaySearch.
