There are different components of a TFT displays that can be modified to create a custom color LCD. Some of the modifications are not too expensive, while others can be cost prohibitive. We will cover some of the main options available and their estimated cost when customizing a TFT display module.
Note: If you need a color LCD module, but do not need video or dot matrix (Graphical) capabilities, I would suggest using a lower cost alternative such as FSC*(Field Sequential Color display) aka known as a TN color display. A second option for a lower cost and much lower power requirement would be a custom segmented display module with color overlays.
This is by far the most expensive component of the TFT module to customize. There are industry standard glass sizes for TFT’s. The list includes, but is not limited to, 2.8 inch, 3.5 inch, 5.7 inch, 7 inch, 10.2 inch and larger. If you can design your product to make use of these standard sizes, then do it. If you need a unique size, say a something between a 2.8 inch and 3.5 inch, you may be forced to invest in a custom glass size. We have seen quotes for custom glass sizes for TFT run between $100,000 dollars to $150,000 dollars. Not a minor investment for most companies.
A TFT LCD display with a modified PCB, is still considered a custom color TFT. Modification costs to customize the PCB is an estimated $400 to $1,200 one-time tooling fee. The unit cost of the TFT display, with a modified PCB will be slightly higher than the cost of the TFT with a standard PCB.
Many products that incorporate a custom color LCD display will contain a touch screen or touch panel. These can be modified to meet a customer’s particular size for an estimated tooling cost of $3,000 to $4,000.

Displays are a standard component of almost any device, application or machine. Both character and graphic LCD displays use only a moderate amount of electricity and take up only a moderate amount of space, and are therefore very suited to mobile applications on batteries. A liquid-crystal display (LCD) is a flat-panel display or other electronically modulated optical device that uses the light-modulating properties of liquid crystals combined with polarizers. LCDs are slowly being replaced by OLEDs, which can be easily made into different shapes, and have a lower response time, wider color gamut, virtually infinite color contrast and viewing angles, lower weight for a given display size and a slimmer profile (because OLEDs use a single glass or plastic panel whereas LCDs use two glass panels; the thickness of the panels increases with size but the increase is more noticeable on LCDs) and potentially lower power consumption (as the display is only "on" where needed and there is no backlight). OLEDs, however, are more expensive for a given display size due to the very expensive electroluminescent materials or phosphors that they use. Also due to the use of phosphors, OLEDs suffer from screen burn-in and there is currently no way to recycle OLED displays, whereas LCD panels can be recycled, although the technology required to recycle LCDs is not yet widespread. Attempts to maintain the competitiveness of LCDs are quantum dot displays, marketed as SUHD, QLED or Triluminos, which are displays with blue LED backlighting and a Quantum-dot enhancement film (QDEF) that converts part of the blue light into red and green, offering similar performance to an OLED display at a lower price, but the quantum dot layer that gives these displays their characteristics can not yet be recycled.
Since LCD screens do not use phosphors, they rarely suffer image burn-in when a static image is displayed on a screen for a long time, e.g., the table frame for an airline flight schedule on an indoor sign. LCDs are, however, susceptible to image persistence.battery-powered electronic equipment more efficiently than a CRT can be. By 2008, annual sales of televisions with LCD screens exceeded sales of CRT units worldwide, and the CRT became obsolete for most purposes.
Most color LCD systems use the same technique, with color filters used to generate red, green, and blue subpixels. The LCD color filters are made with a photolithography process on large glass sheets that are later glued with other glass sheets containing a TFT array, spacers and liquid crystal, creating several color LCDs that are then cut from one another and laminated with polarizer sheets. Red, green, blue and black photoresists (resists) are used. All resists contain a finely ground powdered pigment, with particles being just 40 nanometers across. The black resist is the first to be applied; this will create a black grid (known in the industry as a black matrix) that will separate red, green and blue subpixels from one another, increasing contrast ratios and preventing light from leaking from one subpixel onto other surrounding subpixels.Super-twisted nematic LCD, where the variable twist between tighter-spaced plates causes a varying double refraction birefringence, thus changing the hue.
AF 45 thin glass from SCHOTT is modified borosilicate glass with a high content of BaO and Al2O3. It is alkali-free* in synthesis. Due to the unique properties of AF 45, this sheet glass is an excellent choice for many specialty display glass applications. Because of the high-quality fire-polished surfaces of AF 45, there is no need to polish the glass surfaces before use in most instances.
While in theory an Arduino can run any LCD, we believe that some LCDs are particularly suited to being an Arduino LCD display. We"ve currated this list of LCD displays that will make any Arduino-based project shine.
First is the interface. All of these displays support SPI. Builders often ask themselves (or us) "which interface uses the fewest GPIO pins? AND is that interface fast enough to update the screen at an acceptable rate for my application?" When using the relatively small procesor of the Arduino, SPI is usually the best interface because it takes few wires (either 3 or 4) however it does limit the overall size (number of pixels) that can be quickly controlled. I2C is another choice of interface to leave GPIOs open. We tend to recommend SPI over I2C for Arduino displays because SPI is quicker and better at handling more complex data transfer, like pulling image data from an SD card.
Which brings us to the second factor in choosing an Arduino display: the number of pixels. We typically recommend a display with a resolution of 320x240 or less for use with Arduino. Take for example a 320x240 24-bit display. Such a display takes 230,400 bytes *(8 + 2) = 2,304,000 bits for a single frame. Divide that by 8,000,000 (Arduino SPI speed of 8MHZ) = 0.288 seconds per frame or 3.5 frames per second. 3.5 fps is fast enough for many applications, but is not particularly quick. Third, we want to recommend displays that are easy to connect to an Arduino. Each of these displays has a ZIF tail or easily solderable throughholes, so no fine pitch soldering is needed. These displays can either be brought up on the CFA10102 generic breakout board, or with a custom CFA breakout board.
Most character displays can be run via Parallel connection to an Arduino. You"ll want to make sure you can supply enough current to operate the backlight.
Compared with ordinary LCDs, TFT LCDs provide very clear images/text with shorter response times. TFT LCDs are increasingly being used to bring better visual effects to products.
TFT stands for “thin film transistor”. The transistor of a color TFT LCD is composed of a thin film of amorphous silicon deposited on glass. It acts as a control valve to provide the appropriate voltage to the liquid crystal for each sub-pixel. This is why TFT LCDs are also known as active matrix displays.
TFT LCDs have a liquid crystal layer between a glass substrate formed by the TFT and transparent pixel electrodes and another glass substrate with a color filter (RGB) and a transparent counter electrode. Each pixel in the active matrix is paired with a transistor that includes a capacitor, which gives each sub-pixel the ability to retain its charge without sending a charge every time it needs to be replaced. This means that TFT LCDs are more responsive.
To understand how a TFT LCD works, we must first grasp the concept of a field effect transistor (FET), which is a transistor that uses an electric field to control the flow of current. It is a component with three terminals: source, gate and drain. fet controls the flow of current by applying a voltage to the gate, thereby changing the conductivity between the drain and source.
Using the FET, we can build a circuit as follows. The data bus sends a signal to the source of the FET, and when SEL SIGNAL applies a voltage to the gate, a drive voltage is generated on the TFT LCD panel. A sub-pixel is lit. A TFT LCD display contains thousands or millions of such driver circuits.

TFT LCD monitors are susceptible to glare and reflection from direct sunlight or high-bright applications. In almost all TFT LCDs there is an air gap between the TFT panel and the cover lens. Having an air gap causes repeat refraction between each component level of the display when in high-brightness installations. Reducing the reflection inside these components with optical bonding gives greater contrast and makes the screen more viewable in outdoor or high bright conditions without the need to increase the brightness of the screen itself.
Optical bonding is a process where a layer of resin is applied between the glass or touchscreen and TFT LCD TFT panel of a monitor, bonding them to make a solid laminate with no gaps or pockets of air. When choosing a screen for any project, you should evaluate the environment and operating conditions the screen will have to endure. Industrial grade screens and panel PCs are made rugged with all types of features available to withstand any type of application. One such feature available to consider is optical bonding.
Optical bonding is popular among the military, marine, medical, transportation and retail sectors whereby a higher performing display is required due to the harsh environments. Optical Bonding is suited to industries that tend to use rugged displays in high reliability environments or industries where displays need to be seen in high ambient light conditions. The process of Optical Bonding is particularly well suited and much more effective when applied to devices that operate outdoors or in heavily lighted environments.
When LCD displays are manufactured, including touchscreens, the front glass of the screen is layered onto the LCD module. This doesn’t present a problem in standard viewing environments, however in certain conditions, like with outdoor placement, the tiny gap between the 2 layers can impair viewing performance.
The display from an non-optically bonded monitor is created by the light of the LCD reflecting through the gap and then the outer glass of the screen. The light is interrupted and bends when it passes through the gap and glass of the screen and some of the light is actually reflected back to the LCD module, this is called refraction. This refraction through the layers impairs the intensity and clarity of the end image and thus lowers brightness and readability. By bonding the LCD module and glass together you remove the interruptions and chances for the light to be reflected back. More light gets through to the surface of the screen and therefore the image is brighter.

Thin-Film Transistor Liquid Crystal Displays use thin-film transistors to control the voltage applied to the liquid crystal layer at a sub-pixel level. The structure of TFT LCDs consists of a TFT “sandwich” and a BLU (Backlight Unit). A typical configuration is shown in the schematic diagram below.
Firstly, between the back and front polarizers, TFT LCD cells are made with two glass substrates – one for color filters, the other for a TFT array – and a liquid crystal layer sandwiched in between.
