Many of you by now have heard of the 2018 Jeep Grand Commander (K8). Grand Commander is a seven-passenger mid-sized Jeep SUV based off of the Cherokee (KL) for the Chinese market. However, Jeep has now launched a five-passenger model called the Commander. Yes, the Commander name has returned. Instead of being a boxy-shaped Jeep based off of the rear-wheel drive Grand Cherokee, it’s based on the front-wheel drive Cherokee’s CUSW (Compact U.S. Wide) platform.

While the Jeep Cherokee is also manufactured and sold in China alongside the new Commander and Grand Commander models, the Commander is sold as a premium alternative to the Cherokee. Commander and Grand Commander, fill in a gap between the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee.

There is two choices of engines for the 2018 Jeep Commander. Both are 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engines paired with a 9-speed automatic. One of the powertrain combinations has a power output of 230 horsepower (172 kW) and 258 ft.-lb of torque (350 N∙m) or 262 horsepower (195 kW) and 295 ft.-lb of torque (400 N∙m). Expect a gas/electric powertrain to make its debut, in the not so distant future.

Just like it’s 2019 Jeep Cherokee sibling, the Commander gets full LED headlamps and tail lamps. All Commander models get a panoramic sunroof and a roof rack as standard equipment. Commander models also get an electric tailgate with height adjustable memory.

Commander and Grand Commander models can be optioned with the Jeep Active Drive I intelligent four-wheel drive system. There is no Trail Rated model for either vehicle, so neither have the Jeep Active Drive II system found on the Cherokee Trailhawk.

Commander front-wheel drive models are equipped with 18-inch wheels and 235/60R18 tires. Four-wheel drive models get 19-inch wheels with 235/55R19 tires. Four-wheel disc brakes are standard on all models. The front suspension structure consist of a MacPherson independent front suspension system, while the rear consist of a multi-link independent rear suspension system.

On the interior, all Commander models come standard with leather wrapped steering wheel, shifter lever, and luxury leather seat (top-trim levels get Nappa Leather seating). Also standard are 8-way power adjustable driver and passenger seats with 4-way electric lumbar support. Most trims come standard with front heated seating as well.

Base Commander trims come with a 3.5-inch instrument display while the rest of the Commander lineup gets a 7-inch color LCD instrument display system. A 7-inch UConnect system is standard on the base Commander trim level, while the 8.4-inch UConnect is standard on the rest of the trim levels. Apple CarPlay & Baidu CarLife Mobile Internet are standard across all models. While navigation is only available on the top-tier level of the vehicle.

All Commander models come with keyless entry and push to start system, tire pressure monitoring and display system and rear radar parking system with brake assist. Most models come standard with front park assist and ParkView rear backup camera. Equipment like LaneSense lane assist system with automatic correction, automatic parking system and active front collision warning system with brake assist are only available on the top-tier model.

Pricing for the Commander begins at the equivalent of $37,822 U.S. for a base model front-wheel drive model, while the four-wheel drive top-tier trim level starts at the equivalent of $45,975 US.

Something is afoot at Jeep. The American brand best known for dragging the antiquated Wrangler into the modern era is embarking on a new mission: Toeing the luxury line against the likes of Lincoln, Range Rover, and Lexus.

This process began with the Grand Cherokee L, a shapely three-row with room for growing families. Then came the heavy artillery, in the form of the Grand Wagoneer andWagoneer siblings—all-new, body-on-frame brutes whose prices can easily blow past six figures, and whose knockout interiors cosset inhabitants.

Today, we have the third salvo: the two-row Grand Cherokee. Unveiled last fall, the all-new, fifth-generation G.C. employs a multi-pronged approach in spec, to appeal to vastly different customers. Jeep’s line of hybrid 4xe powertrains are on offer and should help lure eco-conscious consumers. Grand Cherokee Trailhawk models look ready to charge off-piste but bring none of the Wrangler’s live-axle quirks. It’s the third prong, however, that high-end luxury play, that might just be the most important. Today’s Grand Cherokee faces a far more daunting barrier than the Cobo Hall window pulverized by its forefather: This one has to shatter the expectations of buyers who might raise eyebrows at a $70,000 Jeep that brings no military roots and no seating for seven.

Our test rig for this review was a 2022 Grand Cherokee Summit Reserve 4×4. With an as-tested price of $69,395, this trim is basically maximum Grand Cherokee. Options present represented almost every box worth ticking, including premium Palermo leather (exclusive to Summit Reserve models), the nifty 10.25-inch passenger screen, a kickin’ 19-speaker McIntosh audio system, and more. The Advanced Technology Group ($1995) also scored our tester a head-up display and a night-vision camera that can recognize pedestrians and animals, plus an auto-dimming rear-view mirror that can display a camera feed of what’s behind you.

This is a more upright and broadly stanced machine than the outgoing, fourth-gen Grand Cherokee. While the new Jeep’s body is no wider, the 1.6 inches of added track and more rectangular form imply a girthier machine, thicker in the neck. Relative to its new three-row counterpart, which rides on the same platform (WL74 for the two-row Grand Cherokee, WL75 on the L), the smaller rig is down five inches between the wheels and more than 11 inches overall. The exterior evokes whiffs of Range Rover Sport, almost certainly an intentional move. The two-tone coloration comes across as faddish, but a black roof is mandatory here. The only way to get a monotone Grand Cherokee is to spec exterior paint in black.

Stellantis has been on a tear with interiors lately—revamps galore and huge bumps in quality. Gone are the bulbous surfaces and chintzy controls that put a damper on high-dollar versions of the last Grand Cherokee. In their place are forms and materials that walk the 70-large talk. The whole package feels tight and clean, with main features in easy reach and pleasing to the eye. Some controls lack the rock-solid feel of the same bits in, say, a Lexus, but you’re still working with physical buttons, not some glitch-prone, multi-screen affair. (Range Rover, we’re looking at you here.)

If you’re more than six feet tall, you might find the Jeep’s second row a bit crowded—but with a vehicle like this, that’s an outlier case. Five seats and four doors in a truck like this imply adult use of the second row, but statistically speaking, expensive SUV trims more often find the driveways of small families and well-off empty nesters. (Naturally, Jeep hopes larger families looking for clan-toting will be more likely to turn to the three-row.) Practical interior complaints are limited to the lack of second-row fold handles in the cargo area; if you’re loading the trunk but want the extra cargo space, you have to walk to a rear door and use the seat-mounted levers to fold the rear bench. This is a small detail, but luxury SUVs are all about convenience, and it feels like a miss.

Setting aside the turbo four and electric motors of the Grand Cherokee 4xe—we’ll review that vehicle soon—the nonhybrid G.C. gets one of two drivetrains: Jeep’s 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6, an old stalwart good for 293 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque, or a 357-horse, 390 lb-ft Hemi V-8. The Pentastar is standard, the Hemi a $3795 option. Both engines come paired to a ZF eight-speed automatic, with trim level determining which of Jeep’s three 4×4 systems you get.

Our tester had the Pentastar but needed the Hemi. The six gets the Jeep’s 4700-pound mass moving and produces plenty of pace, but it’s not a pleasant experience. Much of a luxury vehicle’s appeal lies in how it can make ordinary tasks seem effortless, and that thrashing V-6 comes off like a pep band in a cathedral. The Hemi—or better yet, the recently announced twin-turbo Hurricane straight-six—would go a long way toward making ordinary commutes feel as regal as the Grand Cherokee’s interior. (Stellantis will neither confirm nor deny that the Hurricane is coming to this model, but since the factory says the new engine can fit in place of any of the company’s longitudinally mounted V-6s, the add seems likely.)

The rest of the driving experience is well-sorted—occasionally even surprising. Summit Reserve models wear gorgeous 21-inch aluminum wheels and 275-section tires. That’s as much rubber as you get on a new Dodge Challenger Hellcat, which has more than double the Jeep’s power. Why that much tire is needed here, we don’t know. What we do know is that there’s remarkable corner grip, far more than most owners will seek out. And despite relatively shallow sidewalls, the Jeep soaks up pockmarked pavement remarkably well. Credit the truck’s Quadralift air suspension and semi-active dampers.

Those stout driving dynamics will likely be lost on most owners, who will be too busy enjoying this model’s tech features. Some are more useful than others. That dash-mounted passenger display screen seems like hard novelty, but it at least has a privacy cover to minimize driver distraction. (I thought my wife was poking at a screen that wasn’t on until I leaned over and saw it from her view.) Our tester also had second-row displays, part of the $1995 rear-seat entertainment package—a nice addition, but you’d be smarter to skip them and put the savings toward a Hemi. Stellantis’ UConnect is still one of the best infotainment systems in the business. The McIntosh sound system is a notable step up from the Alpine outfit offered in lesser Grand Cherokee trims, with clarity and depth befitting a luxury car.

With this latest Grand Cherokee, Jeep is asking a lot of its best-selling nameplate. History suggests Trailhawk versions will tackle dirt with ease; if the sales success of the Wrangler 4xe is any guide, a hybridized G.C. should be a popular choice. The luxury tack is the biggest question mark, and the greatest risk.

Is this machine a better idea than a comparably priced Range Rover Sport? Yes, provided you pick that Hemi. The main traits of a ritzy offering are all present. The design, driving experience, interior materials, and tech all stack up. And if that Hurricane six is indeed headed for the Grand Cherokee’s engine bay, we might be gifted a legit competitor to the BMW X5.

Can you picture one of these nestled into a country-club parking lot between Porsches and Bentleys? Hasn’t the Grand Cherokee always fit there, anyway? Someone from Jeep must have noticed that and decided to chase the untapped potential.

In 1993, it was a glass window. Almost 30 years later, Jeep has aimed its volume player at the glass ceiling under the luxury market. By the looks of things, it’s ready to break through.

Base price/as-tested: $66,575 / $71,080 (NB: Our test car was an early-production vehicle equipped with the “Reserve Group” package. As of this writing, the Summit Reserve is now its own trim, hence the price discrepancy between this build and the current configurator. Additionally, Jeep’s website does not list the rear seat entertainment package as an option. A company spokesperson informs us that this is because a chip shortage has made the package temporarily unavailable.)

Highs: Feel like a genuine step up for the brand, inside and out. Arguably the most well-rounded Jeep on offer. And while no trail-ready SUV needs to corner this well, who’s arguing?

Lows: Summit Reserve trim desperately needs a powertrain as refined as the rest of the package. (Come, oh Hurricane straight-six, and deliver us!) The few missing convenience features seem small right until you need them.

Jeep was primarily made for the United Sates military, starting in 1941. It was used to transport troops during World War II, and that"s when the rugged-looking vehicle captured the imagination of people worldwide.

The name Jeep is shorthand for GP or Government or General Purpose. It was a simple, sturdy and flexible vehicle that allowed for easy fixing on the battleground. After the soldiers returned home, Jeep was ready for sale to the general public in 1945. Its arrival essentially introduced the SUV to the market.

Zeroing in on Jeep isn"t surprising, given that it is the jewel in the company"s crown and makes up a lot of Fiat Chrysler"s sales. In fact, along with the Ram truck, it makes up 95 percent of the company"s profits, according to Morgan Stanley.

Not only is Jeep a popular car worldwide but sales have been growing in China since the brand was reintroduced there. Jeep expects to sell 850,000 vehicles in China in 2018, up from 130,000 in 2013. IHS Markit predicts that SUV sales will represent 40 percent of the Chinese auto market in 2020 — quadruple their share in 2010.

The fact that Fiat Chrysler may be considering the sale of its crown jewel gives a sense of the dire straits at the company. Chrysler has long been the sick man of Detroit. The company has nailed some of the city"s most important cultural, emotional and style moments, such as depicted in the company"s Super Bowl ads.

But its leadership over the decades, from Lee Iacocca to its current CEO, has been erratic. In the past two years especially, Chief Executive Sergio Marchionne has been trying to court merger or buyout partners.

Jeep expanded its SUV line in the 1980s and "90s. The Jeep Grand Cherokee, introduced in 1993, is one of the few vehicles made inside the city of Detroit today. Jeep"s plants in Detroit and outside Toledo, Ohio, are tremendously important to the economies of those cities. Jeep is probably the most Midwest-centered of the brands, when it comes to manufacturing. In addition to Detroit and Toledo, Jeeps are made in Kokomo, Ind.; Belvidere, Ill.; and Mexico.

Despite their popularity, Jeeps aren"t necessarily great cars. They, along with other Fiat Chrysler brands, are consistently the lowest-scoring brands by Consumer Reports in terms of quality.

The reporter"s take is that it is an SUV with no storage space. It has a small cabin, but because of its size, it"s hard to park. It gets terrible gas mileage. Its convertible top takes 20 minutes to take down.

The new Jeep Grand Commander has been launched on the Chinese car market. Price starts at 279.800 yuan and ends at 409.800 yuan ($44.600 – 65,000). The Grand Commander is a seven-seat SUV that will only be marketed in China, where there is a lot of demand for seven seat cars.

The Grand Commander is the production version of the Jeep Yuntu Concept. It is manufactured by the Guangzhou-Fiat joint venture. It is positioned above the locally made Jeep Cherokee. Chinese name of the Grand Commander is Da Zhihuigan, literally ‘Big Commander’.

The problem is that the Grand Commander will not be available with a V6, unlike its competitors. A V6 still has loads of snob-value in China; every other Teramont I see is the 6-cylinder variant.

But there is hope because Jeep also announced a plug-in hybrid version, scheduled to launch in 2019. the petrol engine will be the 265 hp 2.0 turbo, mated to an electric motor of a yet unknown output. Still a four-cylinder, but it will have lots of power.

The interior is a bit of a disappointment. There are simple analog dials and, wait for it… an 8 inch touch screen! Eight inch! Even Volkswagen gets ‘m bigger these days.

Jeep has this world famous signature grille design. So what do you do for the status-means-all Chinese auto market? You make that grille as BIG as you can, right? Right? Right?! Right??!!

It is a good looking car and it has the popular Jeep badge, but the low tech interior and the lack of a big engine will let the Grand Commander down in the marketplace. This new Jeep is going to be a hard sell, at least until the PHEV arrives. Nice seats though!

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a range of mid-size SUVs produced by the American manufacturer Jeep.body-on-frame construction, the Grand Cherokee has used a unibody chassis from the start.

The Grand Cherokee"s origins date back to 1983 when American Motors Corporation (AMC) was designing a successor to the smaller Jeep Cherokee (XJ).Larry Shinoda, Alain Clenet, and Giorgetto Giugiaro—were also under contract with AMC to create and build a clay model of the Cherokee XJ replacement, then known as the "XJC" project.Jeep Concept 1 show car foretold the basic design.

As AMC began development of the next Jeep in 1985, management created a business process that is now known as product lifecycle management (PLM).François Castaing, Vice President for Product Engineering and Development, the smallest U.S. automaker was looking for a way to speed up its product development process to compete better against its larger competitors.computer-aided design (CAD) software systems making the engineers more productive. Meanwhile, new communication systems allowed potential conflicts to be resolved faster, thus reducing costly engineering changes, because all drawings and documents were in a central database.Chrysler purchased AMC in 1987, it expanded the system throughout its enterprise, thus connecting everyone involved in designing and building products.

The Grand Cherokee thus became the first Chrysler-badged Jeep product. Development work for the new Jeep model continued and Chrysler"s employees (after the 1987 buyout of AMC) were eager for a late-1980s release date; however, CEO Lee Iacocca was pushing for redesigned Chrysler minivans, thus delaying the Grand Cherokee"s release until late 1992Explorer competitor. Unlike the Explorer, the Grand Cherokee utilized monocoque (unibody) construction, whereas the Explorer was a derivative of the Ranger pickup with a separate body-on-frame. A Dodge branded version was designed as a precaution should Jeep dealers struggle handling so many Grand Cherokee units.

The Grand Cherokee debuted in grand fashion at the 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The vehicle that was driven was a Poppy Red Clear Coat 1993 Grand Cherokee ZJ Laredo with a quartz cloth interior and high-back bucket seats. Then Chrysler president Robert Lutz drove Detroit mayor, Coleman Young, from the Jefferson North Assembly Plant on North Jefferson Avenue via a police escort to Cobo Hall, up the steps of Cobo Hall and through a plate glass window to show off the new vehicle.model year Grand Cherokee began in April 1992.

Production of the Grand Cherokee started shortly afterward in the purpose-built Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit, Michigan. European Grand Cherokees are manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr.

Upon its introduction, it was the first full-scale manufacture of an automobile in the US using HFC-134a refrigerant in place of HCFC-12 for the HVAC system.

The original Grand Cherokee was launched in 1992 as a 1993 model year vehicle in the luxury SUV segment. The "ZJ" models, manufactured from 1992 to 1998, originally came in three trim levels: base (also known as SE), Laredo, and Limited, subsequent trims were added, included Orvis (MY 95–98), TSI (MY97–98). The base model included features such as full instrumentation, cloth interior, and a standard five-speed manual transmission, while gaining the moniker "SE" name for the 1994 model year. Power windows and locks were not standard equipment on the base trim. The minimal price tag differential resulted in low consumer demand, and as a result, the low-line model was eventually discontinued. Additional standard features included a driver-side airbag and four-wheel anti-lock braking system (ABS). The Laredo was the mid-scale model with standard features that included power windows, power door locks, cruise control, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Exterior features included medium-grey plastic paneling on the lower body and five-spoke alloy wheels. The Limited was the premium model, featuring body-color lower body paneling, and gold exterior accents. The Limited also boasted standard features such as leather seating, heated mirrors, front power seats, a keyless entry system, woodgrain interior appliqué, lace style alloy wheels, a driver information center with a compass, digitized climate control, an electrochromic rearview mirror, and Jensen brand stereo with multi-band equalizer. By 1996 the options list grew to include heated seats. Standard was the 4.0, with the 5.2 V8 (and 5.9 in 1998) being optional, as with other models. Package groups with the various trim levels included: fog lamps, skid plates, as well as convenience, lighting, luxury, power, security, and trailer towing packages.

When it was first introduced in April 1992 as an early 1993 model year vehicle, the Grand Cherokee only had one powertrain choice: the 4.0-liter AMC-derived straight-six engine that made 190 horsepower (193 PS; 142 kW). This became the "volume" engine for the Grand Cherokee. Transmission choices included a four-speed automatic transmission (early production ZJs used the AW4—the A500SE (later 42RE) replaced the AW4 during the latter half of the 1993 model year) or an Aisin AX15 manual transmission. Low demand for the manual transmission resulted in its discontinuation after 1994, but European-market ZJs retained it when coupled to the diesel engine (which was unavailable in North America). The drive train choices included rear-wheel drive or four-wheel-drive. In 1995, the engine dropped 5 horsepower (5 PS; 4 kW) to 185 horsepower (188 PS; 138 kW) due to new EPA regulations imposed on the 1996 model year.

In 1997, for the 1998 model year, a variant of the top-level Grand Cherokee Limited, the "5.9 Limited" was introduced. Jeep ads claimed it to be the "world"s fastest sport utility vehicle", verified by third-party testing. The primary improvements in the 5.9 Limited version included a 245-horsepower (248 PS; 183 kW) 5.9-liter OHV V8 engine, heavy-duty 46RE automatic transmission, functional heat-extracting hood louvers, unique wide-slot body-colored grille with mesh inserts, special rocker moldings, low-restriction exhaust with three-inch chrome tip, a low-profile roof rack, and special 16" Ultra-Star wheels. The 5.9 Limited also received a 150 amp alternator and a 2-speed electric cooling fan. Other features include a standard 180-watt, 10-speaker Infinity Gold sound system with rear roof-mounted soundbar, standard sunroof, and an interior swaddled with unique "calf"s nap" soft leather and faux wood trim. The 5.9 Limited was awarded "4×4 of the Year" for 1998 by

Launched in September 1998, the redesigned WJ 1999 Grand Cherokee shared just 127 parts with its predecessor (mostly fasteners). The European model was coded WG. The spare tire was relocated from the side of the cargo compartment to under the floor. (Like the 1998MY ZJ, the rear tailgate glass opened separately.) The two heavy pushrod V8 engines were replaced by Chrysler"s then-new PowerTech. The new V8 engine produced less torque than the old pushrods, but was lighter, offered better fuel economy, and provided similar on-road performance figures (the 23-US-gallon (87 l; 19 imp gal) fuel tank was replaced with one of a 20.5-US-gallon (78 l; 17.1 imp gal) capacity). The straight-six engine was also updated. A redesign of the intake manifold added 10 horsepower (10 PS; 7 kW). While other Jeep vehicles used the Mopar 5 × 4.5 bolt circle, this was the first Jeep following the 1987 Chrysler buyout to receive a wider bolt pattern—5 × 5.

A notable feature available in this generation was the automatic four-wheel drive option called New Venture Gear NV247 transfer case. This two-speed chain-driven transfer case uses a gerotor, a clutch pack coupled to a hydraulic pump, to transfer torque between the front and rear axles. The transfer case contains three modes, 4-All Time, Neutral, and 4-Lo. In 4-All Time, 100% of torque is sent to the rear axle in normal conditions. If the rear axle starts spinning at a higher rate than the front axle, hydraulic pressure builds up in the gerotor and causes the clutch pack to progressively transfer torque to the front axle until both axles return to the same speed. A neutral mode is intended for towing the vehicle. In 4-Lo, the front and rear axles are locked together through a 2.72 reduction gear ratio. The NV247 transfer case is mated to front and rear axles containing Jeep"s Vari-Lok differentials. Vari-Lok differentials also use a gerotor to transfer torque between the wheels on either side of the axle. The major advantage of Quadra-Drive was that the combined transfer case and progressive locking differentials in each axle could automatically control traction between all four wheels. However, only the center differential could be permanently locked, and only in 4Lo. The Quadra-Trac II system included the NV247 transfer case with the standard open front and rear differentials.

The automatic transmission in the WJ was notable. It included three planetary gear sets rather than the two normally used in a four-speed automatic. This gave it six theoretical speeds, and it would have been the first six-speed transmission ever produced in volume, but it was programmed to only use five of these ratios. Four were used for upshifts, with a different second gear for downshifts. Although five of the six ratios were used, Chrysler decided to call it a "4-speed automatic". For MY 2001, the programming was changed to make use of all six ratios. Rather than have six forward gears, the transmission was programmed to act as a five-speed with the alternate second gear for downshifts. The rpm at 70 miles per hour (110 km/h) on a 545RFE is 2,000 rpm, 200 rpm less than the 45RFE programming. 1999 and 2000 model-year WJ owners can have their 45RFE transmission"s programming flashed to enable the extra gear as both transmissions are physically the same. (Must purchase new PCM and ABS module and program them with a fake VIN to make this work.) The 42RE 4-speed automatic remained the transmission for the inline 6 engine. It had slight changes from the previous model Grand Cherokee.

The interior was also completely redesigned. The redesign allowed for larger rear doors, and more space for rear passengers. Controls for various items like headlights, heated seats, and rear wiper were moved to more convenient locations. The electronic Vehicle Information center was moved from below the radio to above the windshield and was standard on 2000–2004 models. Limited models included automatic dual-zone climate control. A 10-CD changer was also available with the Infinity Audio package.

The Grand Cherokee received a minor facelift for 2004 including round fog lamps, a lower front fascia, and a new body color-matched inset grille design.

The WK Grand Cherokee debuted in 2004 for the 2005 model year at the 2004 New York International Auto Show with available Quadra-Drive II four-wheel drive, rear-seat DVD player and optional 5.7-liter Hemi V8. The 3.7-liter V6 engine replaced the 4.0-Liter straight-6. A Mercedes-Benz-sourced 3.0-liter V6 Common Rail Diesel (CRD) was available outside of North America from launch.

Jeep replaced the XJ-era leading-arms live-axle front suspension (found in the ZJ and WJ) with an independent double-wishbone setup like that which debuted in the 2002 Liberty. Classed as a truck-based SUV, the WH/WK Grand Cherokee offers "crossover" refinement, capability and NVH.

The 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee made its European debut at the Euro Camp Jeep in Ardèche, France. This Jeep has gained 4 stars in the Euro NCAP crash safety tests conducted in 2005.

The Grand Cherokee received a minor facelift for 2008 with revised headlights and available High-Intensity Discharge (HID) Headlamps with auto-leveling. The lower portion of the front bumper was still removable as it was from launch to increase the approach angle for off-road use. The 4.7-liter was refined, now producing 305 hp (227 kW; 309 PS), and 334 lb⋅ft (453 N⋅m; 46 kg⋅m).

The 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee is available with an improved 5.7-liter Hemi engine rated at 357 hp (362 PS; 266 kW) and 389 lb⋅ft (527 N⋅m; 53.8 kg⋅m) of torque. The engine uses variable valve timing to increase fuel economy.

The fourth-generation WK2 Grand Cherokee went on sale in summer 2010 as a 2011 model.2009 New York Auto Show.Chrysler Chapter 11 reorganization that same year.

Like previous generations, the WK2 Grand Cherokee chassis is a steel unibody. Unlike previous generations, it features four-wheel independent suspension for better on-road handling. The WK2 and 2011 Durango use a Chrysler designed and engineered platform/chassis that Mercedes-Benz later used for the Mercedes-Benz W166 series. The Chrysler designed platform was part of the DaimlerChrysler engineering projects that were to launch the WK2 Grand Cherokee with the Mercedes-Benz ML to follow.

Engine choices include the all new 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 and 5.7-liter Hemi V8. The Hemi V8 retains the Multiple Displacement System (MDS) that shuts down four cylinders in low-power driving situations. The V8 comes with the multi-speed automatic transmission that includes Electronic Range Selection (ERS) to manually limit the high gear operating range. Trailer towing is rated 7,400 pounds (3,357 kg) for Hemi models and 6,800 pounds (3,084 kg) for Pentastar models.Fiat Powertrain Technologies and VM Motori (with Multijet II injection

The new Grand Cherokee SRT8, which started production on July 16, 2011,Hemi V8 engine. Jeep claims the new SRT8 gets 13 percent better fuel economy than its predecessor.

For the 2022 model year, Jeep marketed the outgoing Grand Cherokee WK2 alongside the all-new Grand Cherokee WL model as the Grand Cherokee WK (not to be confused with the Grand Cherokee (WK), which was produced from 2005 until 2010). The lineup is condensed to base Laredo "E", mid-level Laredo "X", and range-topping Limited trims, with the only engine option being the base 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 gasoline engine.

The fifth generation (WL) Grand Cherokee was revealed as the three-row LWB version, Grand Cherokee L on January 7, 2021. The two-row version was revealed on September 30, 2021.Mack Avenue Assembly Complex, which is built on the grounds of the Mack Avenue Engine Complex in Detroit, Michigan. The two-row Grand Cherokee will continue to be assembled at the nearby Jefferson North Assembly Plant, where it has been assembled since its introduction in 1992 for the 1993 model year.

Three different four-wheel-drive systems will be available: Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II featuring low range, and Quadra-Drive II with low range and "Quadra Lift" air suspension system, as well as rear-wheel drive. When properly equipped, the Grand Cherokee will be able to tow up to 7,200 pounds (3,300 kg). The Grand Cherokee will also be able to ford up to two feet (24 in) of water (when equipped with the Quadra Lift air suspension system). All engines will be mated to a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission that is controlled via a rotary shift knob. The Selec Terrain system, first introduced on the Jeep Grand Cherokee (WK2), will also be available on the Grand Cherokee WL, and is now controlled via a toggle switch in the center console. The Quadra Lift air suspension system is available only with the Quadra-Drive II system.

The 2021 Grand Cherokee is the third Fiat Chrysler Automobiles product to offer the new UConnect 5 infotainment suite, which will offer either an 8.4-inch or 10.1-inch high-resolution touchscreen display, SiriusXM Satellite Radio with 360L, SiriusXM Travel Link services, UConnect Guardian (powered by SiriusXM), a 4G LTE wireless Internet hotspot, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, and an integrated virtual assistant that can be activated by the phrase, "Hey UConnect", or "Hey Jeep", and can control multiple features of the vehicle, as well as provide other pertinent information.

The Grand Cherokee L went on sale in June 2021, wheelbase is 6.9 inches (175 mm) longer than the previous generation two-row model, and 5 inches (127 mm) longer than its two-row counterpart. It is equipped with an independent front and multi-link rear suspension.

The Grand Cherokee L is available in five trim levels: Laredo, Altitude, Limited, Overland, and Summit. While all models will be powered by a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 gasoline engine producing 290 hp (294 PS; 216 kW) and 257 lb⋅ft (348 N⋅m; 36 kg⋅m) (now assisted by the eTorque Mild Hybrid system), Overland and Summit models will also offer the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 gasoline engine with Multi Displacement System (MDS) that will produce 357 hp (362 PS; 266 kW) and 390 lb⋅ft (529 N⋅m; 54 kg⋅m) of torque.

For the first time, the Grand Cherokee will offer a 950-watt, nineteen-speaker McIntosh premium amplified surround sound audio system, replacing the previous 825-watt, eighteen-speaker Harman Kardon system on the Grand Cherokee WK2. Other new features available for the first time on a Grand Cherokee include massaging front seats, a rear seat view camera, a surround-view (360-degree) camera system, a rear view camera digital mirror, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, Qi-compatible wireless device charging, heated and ventilated second-row seats, second-row captain"s chairs, twenty-one inch tires and wheels, Level 2 semi-autonomous driving technology, and power-folding second and third-row seats.

Originally scheduled to be released for the 2021 model year, but delayed until 2022, The two-row Grand Cherokee is available in seven trim levels: Laredo, Altitude, Limited, Overland, Trailhawk, Summit, and Summit Reserve (the off-road oriented Trailhawk trim will not be available on the long wheelbase Grand Cherokee L model). Compared to the previous generation two-row Grand Cherokee, the total passenger volume increases by 4.1 cubic feet (120 L), while cargo space is up 1.4 cubic feet (40 L).

Engine choices are carried over from the previous generation Grand Cherokee (WK2), with two naturally-aspirated units, but also added is turbocharged gasoline/electric plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain. The base engine on all Grand Cherokees is the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 gasoline engine, producing 290 hp (294 PS; 216 kW), and 257 lb⋅ft (348 N⋅m; 36 kg⋅m) of torque.

The optional engine, available on all Grand Cherokee trims aside from the Laredo, Altitude, and Limited, is the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 gasoline engine with the Multi Displacement System (MDS) cylinder deactivation system, producing 360 horsepower (365 PS; 268 kW), and 390 lb⋅ft (529 N⋅m; 54 kg⋅m) of torque. When equipped with the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 gasoline engine, the all-new Grand Cherokee has a maximum towing capacity of 7,200 pounds (3,300 kg). All engines, including the Plug In Hybrid (PHEV) powertrain, are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, with Stellantis manufacturing the 850RE transmission for the 3.6-liter model, and ZF manufacturing the 8HP70 transmission for the 5.7-liter model (all transmissions are based on the design of the ZF 8HP transmission, and use a new rotary controller in the center console). In addition to rear-wheel-drive, three different four-wheel-drive systems are available, and use a new Selec-Terrain toggle controller (the Quadra Drive II four-wheel-drive system also features the Quadra-Lift air suspension system. The Quadra-Lift system can raise or lower the vehicle to different heights, and is standard on all Trailhawk models.

It is available with an optional 4xe plug-in hybrid available on the Limited, Trailhawk, Overland, Summit, and Summit Reserve trim levels. It uses an electrically assisted 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder making a total of 375 hp (380 PS; 280 kW) and 470 lb⋅ft (637 N⋅m; 65 kg⋅m). The 17 kWh battery pack provides an estimated 25 miles (40 km) of range when running solely on electric power. It has the ability to tow 6,000 pounds (2,722 kg).

At the 2022 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS), Jeep introduced the 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe High Altitude Edition Package. Available on both Summmit and Summit Reserve trims, the High Altitude Edition Package features dark exterior accents, unique 21-inch wheels. Following introduction on the Grand Cherokee 4xe, the High Altitude Edition Package will also be available on the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L in both Summit and Summit Reserve trims. A new exterior color, Hydro Blue Pearlcoat, will also be available on most Grand Cherokee, Grand Cherokee 4xe, and Grand Cherokee L models.

In 2010, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) launched an investigation into 1993–2004 model year Jeep Grand Cherokees which involves the fuel tanks of these SUVs. In moderate- to high-energy rear collisions, the fuel tank (located behind the rear axle) could be compromised structurally, resulting in fuel leakage and fire. The NHTSA claims that it has reports of 157 deaths resulting from fires caused by Grand Cherokees crashing. Also affected are 2002–2007 Jeep Liberty models and 1986–2001 Jeep Cherokee models, which totals about 5.1 million affected vehicles.

In June 2013, Chrysler Corporation responded to the recall, agreeing to recall 2.7 million Jeeps, though eliminating both the 1986–2001 Jeep Cherokee (XJ) and 1999–2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ from the recall. The recall will include 2.7 million 1993–1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ and 2002–2007 Jeep Liberty KJ vehicles.

Two weeks prior to this recall, Chrysler Corporation claimed that the affected Jeep vehicles were safe, citing the vehicles" rates of fatal rear-impact crashes involving fire as well as their compliance with then-current requirements of FMVSS standard No. 301,trailer hitch onto the rear bumpers of the vehicles that will protect the fuel tank if the vehicle is involved in a rear impact. If an affected vehicle is not currently equipped with a trailer hitch, one will be installed onto it, and older Jeep and non-factory aftermarket trailer hitches will be replaced with one from Chrysler Corporation. Despite the recall, the market for these Jeep vehicles has not suffered.

In May 2013 there was a recall of WKs with the Quadra-Drive II and Quadra-Trac II systems. This followed cases of cars rolling away due to the transfer case moving into neutral of its own accord, and the owner not having applied the parking brake. The recall revised the Final Drive Control Module (FDCM) software. However, following the recall there were widespread reports on enthusiast web sites

The cause of the roll-aways was faulty soldering in the transfer case actuator. It has been deduced that the revised software detects this by noting any deviation in resistance, and thereupon locks the transfer case in the high ratio for safety; but that it is over-reacting to minor resistance variations from other causes. Originally Chrysler dealers claimed that the loss of neutral and low ratio following the recall was a coincidence; then it claimed that the revised software was revealing pre-existing faults in the system, despite it occurring even with new parts. Chrysler has also claimed that only a small fraction of cars have issues following the recall;

In April 2016, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) ordered a recall of 2014 and 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokees and other cars that use an electronic gear shifter because it sometimes does not go into (or does not remain in) the park position, despite the operator"s best intentions. Consumers reported that they put the car in park and left the engine running, and then were surprised when the car rolled away under power.

An investigation by FCA US and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found some drivers have exited their vehicles without first selecting "PARK." Such behavior may pose a safety risk if a vehicle"s engine is still running.

The company is aware of 41 injuries that are potentially related. It was also the cause of actor Anton Yelchin"s death. The vehicles involved in these events were inspected and no evidence of equipment failure was found. The vehicles also deliver warning chimes and alert messages if their driver-side doors are opened while their engines are still running and "PARK" is not engaged. However, the investigation suggested these measures may be insufficient to deter some drivers from exiting their vehicles without selecting "PARK," so FCA US will enhance the warnings and transmission-shift strategy on these vehicles. The enhancements will combine warnings with a transmission-shift strategy to automatically prevent a vehicle from moving, under certain circumstances, even if the driver fails to select "PARK."

The final fix was Safety Recall S27 / NHTSA 16V-240, a software update that adds an "auto park" feature that will automatically put the vehicle in park if the driver"s door is opened and the driver seatbelt is unlatched while the vehicle is stopped or moving slowly.

In July 2017, 2012–14 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs were recalled due to possible alternator failure. If the alternator fails, the vehicle may stall and/or if the alternator has a short circuit, a fire may occur.

On February 25, 2022, Stellantis and Jeep issued a stop-sale order for 2022 Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L models in dealership inventory. The order was issued after it was discovered that the Radio Frequency Hub Module (RFHM) would cause some vehicles to not recognize the key fob, rendering the vehicles unable to start. This would require the vehicles to be towed to the dealership. This order only affected a "limited number of vehicles", and parts were shipped to dealerships as soon as they became available.

The joint venture that makes Jeeps in China will file for bankruptcy, partners Stellantis and Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC) said on Monday, after a long decline for the oldest foreign auto brand in the world"s largest car market.

The move comes after Stellantis" surprise decision in July to end the venture with GAC, only months after saying it would raise its stake to 75% from 50%.

Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares at the time blamed the growing "political influence" in doing business with partners in China, while GAC said it was "deeply shocked" by Stellantis" decision.

Stellantis has since said it would pursue an import-based business model in China and there would be no major long-term impact from the break with GAC.

Tavares added this month a similar strategy could be followed with Peugeot and Citroen, the other brands Stellantis sells in China, meaning it could pull completely out of manufacturing in the country.

Sales for the GAC venture, which sold the Jeep Cherokee SUV and the Compass crossover, have been in sharp decline for the past four years. They plunged 50% in 2021 from the previous year to 20,396 vehicles.

"No global car company can afford not to be in the largest car market in the world," Tavares said in late 2020, just before completing the merger between Fiat Chrysler and PSA that created Stellantis.

The group is aiming for revenues in China to reach 20 billion euros ($19.8 billion) by 2030, or 7% of the expected total — a steep jump from the 3.9 billion euros of turnover in China, India and Asia Pacific in 2021.

Bill Russo, head of Shanghai-based consultancy Automobility Ltd and a former Chrysler executive, said the Jeep venture had failed to keep up with changes in the Chinese market.

"It had every right to be successful in a market that embraced sport-utility vehicles," he said. "But you can"t be running a 1980s business model when the 21st century has arrived."

Stellantis said on Monday it had fully impaired the value of its investment in the GAC venture in its first half results, which it previously estimated at about 297 million euros.

GAC, which approved the bankruptcy filing, said the venture had liabilities of almost 111% of its assets of 7.3 billion yuan ($1 billion). The bankruptcy would not have a significant impact on its operations, the Chinese company added.

Criticizing both Europe"s automotive market and Beijing"s commercial policies — in contrast with a more cautious stance by Western competitors — Tavares said this month Chinese automakers should be subject to the same tariffs when exporting cars to Europe as European brands face when exporting to China.

Foreign automakers have been under growing pressure in China, where the market has shifted quickly to battery-electric vehicles and domestic brands have been taking market share.

Foreign manufacturers" share of China"s auto market dropped 5.5 percentage points last year to 45.6%, according to the China Passenger Car Association.

Chee-Kiang Lim, managing director China at Detroit-based consultancy Urban Science, said the joint venture model — which China had insisted on to ensure foreign brands shared technology with local automakers — was under threat.

Chinese automakers are more "confident that they have closed the gaps with or even surpassed their foreign partners", so "we have to expect more JVs to unwind in the coming years", he said.

The former AMC invested in a Beijing Jeep joint venture in 1984, the first such deal for vehicle production in China by an American brand. It then went through ownership changes after AMC was acquired by Chrysler and then Chrysler was bought by Fiat, which became Stellantis in 2021 after the merger with PSA.

The Grand Cherokee 4xe is offered only in two-row, 5-passenger form—it’s not available on the three-row Grand Cherokee L body. The 4xe model roster largely shadows the regular gas-engine Grand Cherokee’s, but rather than starting with a “base” Laredo model, the entry-level plug-in hybrid is roughly equivalent to the mid-line Limited trim. From there, the lineup ascends through Trailhawk, Overland, and Summit models. As on other 2022 Grand Cherokees, the Summit model is also available with the range-topping Summit Reserve package. All Grand Cherokee 4xe models come standard with 4-wheel drive. Subtle blue-colored “e” badges help identify the 4xe visually, while the Overland and Trailhawk plug-ins include a sprinkling of additional blue exterior detailing, including the front tow hooks.

The redesigned-for-2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee model lineup expands with the addition of plug-in-hybrid 4xe models that offer more power and improved fuel efficiency—including the ability to drive up to 25 miles in pure-electric mode.

The addition of the 4xe’s hybrid system—not to mention its battery pack—add considerable mass, so the 4xe’s curb weight starts at 5325 pounds and stretches to 5558 pounds for a Summit. That’s a bit more than 900 pounds heavier than a 4-wheel-drive Limited V6, which clocks in at 4413 pounds. The gap closes at the top end, but the Summit 4xe is still more than 500 pounds chunkier than the 5045-lb V8-powered Summit.

The Grand Cherokee 4xe’s PHEV powertrain is basically the same setup that debuted in the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe: a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder paired with a 4xe-specific variant of Jeep’s familiar 8-speed TorqueFlite automatic that loses its conventional torque convertor and adds an electric motor and a pair of clutches.

The 2.0-liter turbo is rated at 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, while the electric motor integrated into the transmission delivers 134 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque. Combined output is an impressive 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, and Jeep says it is available at all times, regardless of the battery pack’s state of charge. For comparison, the Grand Cherokee’s optional 5.7-liter Hemi V8 is rated at 357 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque. The Grand Cherokee 4xe’s maximum tow rating is 6000 pounds, so it is down a bit compared to the conventional Grand Cherokee’s tow ratings of 6200 pounds with the V6 and 7200 pounds with the Hemi.

The 4xe’s battery pack is a 400-volt 17.3-kWh unit with an automatic heating/cooling system. In the Wrangler 4xe, the similar battery pack was mounted inside under a model-specific rear seat, but in the Grand Cherokee the battery and its controls are mounted underneath the Grand Cherokee’s floor and are protected via a collection of skid plates. Jeep says all components of the hybrid system are sealed and waterproof, so the Grand Cherokee 4xe can ford water that’s approximately two feet deep.

Charging the battery pack from empty to full takes approximately 12 hours using standard “Level 1” 120V household service; Level 2 charging with 240V service cuts that time down to about 2 hours. LED battery-charge indicators atop the dashboard and near the charging port display the battery’s progress while the vehicle is charging.

The Grand Cherokee 4xe’s plug-in-hybrid hardware is integrated into the chassis, so it doesn’t affect cargo-hauling capacity—the 4xe offers the same 37.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat as other Grand Cherokees.

The hybrid system’s driver-selectable “E Selec” drive modes—Hybrid, Electric, and eSave—make it especially versatile. The system defaults to Hybrid mode, which blends torque from the gas engine and the electric motor. Energy from the battery pack is given priority, with the gas engine assisting as needed. Electric mode operates solely on the battery’s available energy until the battery is depleted (however, if the driver aggressively applies the throttle, the gas engine will kick in). The EPA estimates that a fully charged Grand Cherokee 4xe can drive 25 miles solely on electric power.

In eSave mode, the gas engine is prioritized. This may sound odd at first, but the idea is that the battery’s charge can be conserved for specific driving situations, such as entering geographical areas that restrict the use of gasoline-powered vehicles, or planned electric-only activities such as off-road driving. This mode can be set in Battery Save or Battery Charge modes via a menu accessible through 4xe’s touchscreen. As is typical for gas/electric hybrids, the Grand Cherokee 4xe uses regenerative braking to help generate electric power used to recharge the battery pack. This system includes a driver-selectable “Max Regen” setting that maximizes the amount of energy recovered and stored in the battery pack.

The Grand Cherokee 4xe is EPA-rated at 56 MPGe on electricity and gasoline, and 23 mpg in combined city/highway driving on gasoline alone. Traditional city and highway fuel economy estimates are not available for the 4xe, but that 23 mpg combined number tops the other 2022 Grand Cherokees—the 3.6-liter models have a combined rating of 22 mpg, while the thirsty 5.7-liter Hemi has a combined estimate of only 17 mpg.

The Grand Cherokee 4xe is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine paired with two electric motors, for a total output of 375 horsepower. Twenty-inch wheels are standard equipment.

The base Grand Cherokee 4xe starts at $57,700 and comes standard with features such as Capri leather upholstery, an Alpine-brand audio system with nine speakers, and 18-inch wheels. Jeep’s Quadra-Trac II 4-wheel-drive system, which includes a two-speed transfer case and hill-descent control, is also included.

Consistent with recent Grand Cherokee tradition, the Trailhawk ($62,485 to start) is the most off-road-capable 4xe. Its standard hardware upgrades include the Quadra-Drive II 4-wheel-drive system with an electronic limited-slip rear axle, 18-inch wheels with all-terrain tires, Selec-Speed control (essentially an off-road cruise-control system), Quadra-Lift air suspension, a front sway-bar disconnect system (this activates by pressing a button and allows for improved suspension articulation off road), front tow hooks, steel skid plates, and an integrated off-road camera system. Unique Trailhawk exterior details include model-specific front and rear fasciae–the front fascia brings a five-degree improvement in approach angle, which makes it easier to clear obstacles when off-road.

The Grand Cherokee Trailhawk comes standard with Jeep’s Quadra-Drive II 4WD system, Quadra-Lift adjustable-height air suspension, and a front sway-bar disconnect system, among other off-road-focused upgrades.

The Overland starts at $65,760 and adds features such as Nappa leather upholstery, hands-free power liftgate, and a 19-speaker McIntosh-brand premium audio system. Quadra-Trac II 4WD and Quadra-Lift air suspension are also standard. The Overland can be equipped with an optional Off-Road Group, which adds the Quadra-Drive II 4-wheel-drive system with two-speed transfer case, electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential, steel skid plates, and 18-inch wheels.

The line-topping Summit ($69,820 to start) adds enhanced interior trim, 12-way power-adjustable front seats with massage, driver-attention monitor, and a 360-degree surround-view monitor. The Summit 4xe receives the Quadra-Drive II setup along with the electronic limited-slip rear differential. For the ultimate in Grand Cherokee 4xe luxury, the Summit can be upgraded to Summit Reserve trim ($74,300 to start), which adds premium touches such as 21-inch wheels, quilted Palermo leather, and open-pore Waxed Walnut wood trim.

Standard safety features on all Grand Cherokee 4xes include full-speed collision warning with active braking and pedestrian/cyclist detection, rear cross path detection, active lane management, lane departure warning with lane-keep assist, brake assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear parking sensors.

At the 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe’s press preview event in Austin, Texas, we split our time between two different models. Our morning drive was in a generously equipped Overland 4xe; its lengthy options list consisted of Baltic Gray Metallic paint ($395), Luxury Tech Group IV ($2155; adds Nappa leather seats, four-zone climate control, and a collection of comfort and convenience items), Advanced Protech Group III ($2235; adds a head-up display, night vision with pedestrian and animal detection, active driving assist, intersection collision assist, surround view camera system, map-in-cluster display, integrated off-road camera, and a back-up camera washer), black painted roof ($775), Off-Road Group ($1095), and the front passenger interac
