The development of silica particles of micrometer size has attracted much attention in the field of electronics. One of the applications of these silica particles is the use as liquid crystal display (LCD) spacer. For this purpose, the technology of mass production of silica particles of micrometer size was established and commercialized. Silica particles are synthesized by growing the seed silica particles in the solution according to sol‐gel process. First, the seed silica particles of sub-micrometer size are synthesized by one-step hydrolysis and polycondensation reaction of TEOS. The silica particles applied as spacer are characterized by the completely spherical shape, extremely narrow particle size distribution, and high purity. In this chapter, the usage as LCD spacer, the physical properties, and the manufacturing method of sol‐gel-derived silica spherical particles will be described based mainly on the experience obtained in the course of development for commercialization.
