kodak confirm the lcd panel made in china
UPDATED July 8: An announcement of the proposed sale of the Kodak paper and chemistry business – ‘Paper, Photochemicals, Display and Software’ – to Chinese corporation Inside Imaging can confirm that announcement.
Sino Promise describes itself as ‘the largest distributor of Kodak Alaris in the world’. It supplies 8000 Kodak-supporting retailers in Asia Pacific and Russia. Since 2015, it has also manufactured photochemiclas and finished Kodak silver halide photographic paper and dye-sub paper in its factory in Xiamen, for export to the Asia Pacific region, including Australia and New Zealand.
The film business is transferred to the Kodak Moments business unit. Paper and chemistry accounted for 56 percent of revenue for the Kodak Alaris PPF business unit in the 12 months to March last year, with (more profitable) film contributing a 36 percent share.
Its Wuxi factory – which according to its website it took over from Kodak Alaris in 2016, manufactures Kodak medical X-ray film; industrial film; black & white and colour film; colour and black & white photographic paper; and photochemicals. It also manufactures its own ‘Sino’ brand of silver halide paper and chemicals at Wuxi.
Kodak Alaris has one key marketable asset – the licence to sell Kodak-branded products in various categories. It has largely withdrawn from manufacturing itself, and so is essentially a global marketing operation.
The KA insider told Inside Imaging that Sino Promise withdrew at the last minute from the sale of a much larger portion of Kodak Alaris. We were told the now-abandoned project to sell the whole business cost Kodak Alaris’ owner, the Kodak UK pension fund, around US$30 million.
The new negotiations have taken over 12 months as Sino Promise has been careful to ensure there are ‘no surprises’. The Kodak Moments component of Kodak Alaris (kiosks, online photo services, retail dye-sub printers – and now film) was also on offer, but the sale did not go forward.
We were also informed that at one stage, Eastman Kodak itself had an interest in acquiring the paper, film and photochemicals segment of Kodak Alaris. (Essentially buying it back less the crushing debt now in the hands of the Kodak UK pension fund.) But if our reading of Eastman Kodak’s last financial report is correct, Eastman Kodak is in no position to buy anything.
According to our source another Chinese company, Lucky Film, has also shown recent interest in the Kodak Alaris paper and chemistry business but was beaten to a deal by Sino Promise.
The new Kodak Alaris will be a stripped down operation, with around half the 2000 employees it has today, and it will withdraw from some countries in which it now operates, according to our source.
There are around 140 employees involved in the paper and chemistry business, the majority of whom are expected to move to Sino Promise. The head of the Paper, Photochemicals, Display and Software business unit to be sold to Sino Holdings is currently Richard Condon.
Waste of pensioner fundsThe Kodak Alaris insider explained that he or she was prompted to shed light on the current situation as ‘an employee concerned about the waste being incurred of what is effectively pension funds’.
Some background: The original Kodak Pension Plan was the largest unsecured creditor to Eastman Kodak when EKC went into Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2012. Legal action by the pension fund against the broken down former giant of photography was ultimately considered futile. Unable to honour its financial obligations to its UK employees and past employees, Eastman Kodak persuaded the pension fund to buy what would become Kodak Alaris for US$325 million. The alternative was the immediate collapse of the fund. The pension fund also acquired a crushing debt of US$2.84 billion dollars – the amount EKC owed the original Kodak UK pension fund. At the time, Kodak UK pensioners were given the option of transferring to the UK government’s Pension Protection Fund (PPF), which provides a safety net for British employees whose pensions are lost when their employer goes bankrupt, or joining a new fund (KPP2) with its sole asset being Kodak Alaris. Either way, they were going to get less than they were entitles to.
The plan was for Kodak Alaris to trade out of its owner’s debt and provide KPP2 pensioners with a steady income stream. While Kodak Alaris was occasionally able to generate cash, it proved unable to provide any meaningful support to KPP2, which is still massively in the red. To use the vernacular, it turned out that the Kodak UK pensioners were sold a pup.
The failing KKP2 is now in the process of being transferred to the UK PPF. The KPP2 scheme now has 11,000 members and a £1.5bn (US$1.9 billion) debt. It was the biggest pension scheme to fall into the PPF since the lifeboat fund was set up in 2005. In a classic example of ‘socialising losses’, Eastman Kodak has managed to flick pass its financial obligations to former employees and the UK government!
Lat year the PPF told financial publicationInvestment & Pensions Europe that it had been working with the Kodak scheme’s trustees and the Pensions Regulator to ‘ensure an orderly transition into PPF assessment ahead of the employer insolvency event’.
‘During the assessment period we will continue the work of the KPP2 trustees to dispose of the Kodak Alaris business for fair value. However should this not be achieved through the sales process, the PPF is prepared to retain ownership of all or part of Kodak Alaris.’

Cheap ink. Reliable printer? That"s the reason I gave for bringing in Kodak"s ESP 7 printer for testing. Kodak says its lower cost ink will save you a bundle in printing costs. These are tough times, and frankly, ink is expensive. It"s not just ink-jet printers that are the problem. A replacement toner cartridge for my laser printer costs more than I paid for the printer itself. It hurts to spend $50, $75 or more for replacement ink cartridges.
Replacement cartridges for ink-jet printers don"t go nearly as far as laser printer toner cartridges, so they can burn through your budget in no time especially if you do any photo printing at home.
The ESP 7 is a multifunction consumer-grade printer with built-in printing, copying and scanning functions for a list price of $199.99 (street prices start at about $160). Kodak entered the consumer multifunction printer market in 2007, fairly late and against entrenched competition. To differentiate its ink-jet line from those of its competitors and to get a toehold in this competitive market, Kodak did two things differently with the ESP 7.
1.It improved print longevity. It uses a pigment-based ink that Kodak says creates photo prints that last a lifetime, without fading, while providing as good or better image quality than the more common dye-based inks. Competitors say dye-based in

TAIPEI, Oct 20 (Reuters) - Taiwan is mulling easing controls on the technologies its flat-panel makers can use in their China operations, as South Korean and Japanese rivals have stepped up investments there, the Commercial Times reported on Tuesday. LCD panel makers, including AU Optronicsand Chi Mei Optoelectronics, will be able to use any technologies in mainland production as long as they use more advanced technologies in Taiwan, the Chinese-language paper said, citing unnamed government officials.
“We think the evaluation standard should be that technology and production they have in Taiwan exceeds that in China,” it quoted economics minister Shih Yen-shiang as saying in response to questions from lawmakers.
LCD panel makers in Japan and South Korea have said they would invest in more advanced 7.5th- and 8.5th- generation technologies in China, posing a threat to Taiwan companies, the paper said.
Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou told Reuters on Monday the island had not considered allowing the island’s LCD firms to make large panels on the mainland for now, saying it would only cautiously export its technology expertise to China. [ID:nTP169514]
In late September, Shih said the ministry would allow chip makers and flat-panel firms to invest more in China, including using more advanced process technology for chips and allowing LCD firms to make large panels there, but gave no timetable. [ID:nTP321454]
Taiwanese firms such as AU, TSMCand UMC, have urged the government to allow them to invest in China or use more advanced technologies to help cut costs and compete with global rivals.
Asian makers of liquid crystal display (LCD) screens are rushing to set up production bases in China, which is expected to become the world’s biggest LCD TV market within a few years.
“China has decided to approve Korean firms’ investment plans but they have yet to receive official confirmation from the Chinese side,” a source close to the matter said.

Yes unfortuntaly this is the interpretation of today. Because of those shareholders we have this huge amount of pollutions and environmental damage. In the EU environmental laws are for strickt than in Asia.... whatever.... no point in discussing your future in Europe.
Would you feel better if it was sold off to America? Because that is what happened in the 80"s and 90"s when America went on a spending spree and gobbled up many companies.
It"s time for China to be the economic superpower. America has become less relevant with progressive policies in which goals is to share prosperity with the rest of the world.
That"s not a law of nature, a law of economics, and setting aside anti-rackets laws (which are there as money laundering prevention) that"s not a law.
A lot of people on "one side of the isle" believe (have been told to believe by their cloud sycophants) the government is responsible for the out sourcing of American jobs........nothing could be further from the truth. Profiteering by corporations in search of more profits at the expense of the U.S. working class is the culprit, and has led to the kakistocracy that now runs our country........working class survival be damned.
this is not the point I am trying to make. Everyone of us wants to have stability in our lives. Stability comes with all sorts of labour available between all social strata. Now you have only highly paid jobs in the cities but the manufacuring and labour intensive industries has vanished from most Euorpean cities because the wages cannot be paid for a normal worker but the Bank manager still want their 10million bonus even if the manager"s perfomance was bad.
Ronald Reagan broke the unions as almost his very first Presidential act-he was wholly owned by the petroleum industry and the Corporations. Greed is good. Poor people suck. (I grew up on the wrong side of Reagan"s ethos..)
During the Nixon era, CEOs went to prison for doing things that 2012"s Citizens United ruling codified into law as being just fine-Corporate money equals speech and infinite amounts of it can be poured into elected officials" pockets. So yes, it is exactly Corporate greed and malfeasance that put us where we are. We fight endless wars for their interests, we starve the least among us so the Corporation doesn"t have to pay taxes. We put provable idiots like tRump in charge so as to ruin our standing upon the world stage, our media flooded with conspiracy theories presented as truth.
And it isn"t just the R"s either.. been watching Pelosi and the DNC sell us out to them since the "90s because "electability." No wonder we are where we are. :-(
Well if it the managemanet failed, and they did, then they should have concentrated the businesses to make ik it more lucrative. Kodak introduced half-baked products of poor value. I wonder why ? Just to earn the quick cash?
They could have done so much more. And this is annoying with a lot of old large companies who have never learnt to re-position themselves as markets evolve.
I need a new film scanner anytime soon. A Pakon-Scanner with more resolution would have been awesome. However, Kodak did not see the need - and there are many photographers out there now shooting analogue.
Olympus has bailed-out of the consumer camera business. Rodenstock and Schneider have switched to machine vision. That"s three companies who are evolving away from photography.
Rodenstock, so I have heard from someone who works there, produces lenses for Leica. Rodenstock was divided into different companies and I believe only the divsion of glasses (eye/vision correction) remained at the original Rodenstock company. The photo division has been sold multiple times. If a division is past on all the time this is not good for company assets.
Schneider only lenses I have ever seen have been made for Phase One / Mamiya. However the Schneider branded lenses were all made by Mamiya. Not saying that they are bad. Zeiss lenses are made by Cosina or Tamron as widely known.
I"ve had the paradigm of "revenue over everything" for years, from the damnable tax inversions to activist investors to catastrophe of 2008. Time to learn more.
As having explained earlier a healthy popultion within cities consists of all soacial strata. In big cities the normnal worker cannot afford renting a flat/house however, they are needed to serve the community. Who is stacking the shelves at your local supermarket etc... They are equally important as managers or enigneers.. Moving and selling everything to China is bad for the quality of life you enjoy now. 80% we consume is coming from China and again I think locally produced products are more sustainable and more environmentally friendly.
If you look at food, basically all canned fruits, tomatos, tomato puree and what not is from China. China is steering the EU and the EU is no longer independend.
Here in Seattle, we"re always told how every old house and building is torn down and replaced with some ugly Corporate shoebox is wholly necessary because "density".. but it"s two grand a month for a broom closet literally the size of an RV inside while the working man"s wage in toto is barely two grand a month.
There should be a law that the percentage of new units built should mirror the affordability by the income bracket percentage of local residents. In other words, if 90 percent of the people in an area make $18-22 an hour, then 90 percent of units built should reflect that, and should be rented out at a realistically affordable price like $800 per month. Right now in Seattle, new units for the $250K and up crowd are being built six times faster than 10 years ago..
Over half of the tent dwellers along the streets of Seattle *have full time employment* but cannot afford anything in Seattle.. Or for that matter, east as far as Issaquah where the new units they just built start out at $2600 a month yet developers were given huge tax breaks because they were marketed to us as "affordable."
So the developers pay no taxes, get huge profits, and taxpayers subsidize some of those units to be affordable to the food stamp receiving Amazon workers who have to live there and commute to Seattle. Because you know, Amazon is a struggling startup who can"t afford to pay its workers a living wage..
There"s a difference between "rich" as in I bust my butt and grow my bike shop into a business that cracks the seven digit mark in gross sales.. and "wealth" as in so many untaxed billions of dollars that it is impossible to spend it all-and the sociopathic need to get even more and share even less of it.
I"m actually pretty happy with my shop being smaller-far less to worry about in a bunch of ways. And I regularly give of myself and to charity. Probably why I won"t ever be a billionaire. There"s a big gulf between wanting a Leica SL2 and some lenses versus a yacht with another smaller yacht inside it-and the sociopathic tendencies needed to accrue that kind of fortune in one lifetime.
Same here, I run my own business for 8 years now. It is stuggeling and I always just out of the costs. However, I am on the limit of what I can do. I need a second enigneer but I don"t have the funds for that. And now, the corona.... I don"t need to discuss that.
Two stars, purely for the novelty of an instant printer/camera. But seriously, if you would like to keep believing that Kodak makes quality products, stay away from this one.
- when the camera is turned on, the retractable flash pops up and you are supposed to turn it off by closing the flash - but there is no tactile feedback or a click when you try to close it and most of the times, the flash simply refuses to stay closed
Had it been just one of the flaws from the above list, I would have believed that maybe I got a faulty device. But the collection of issues suggests that the product is not necessarily well designed or paid detailed attention to.
The software is just clunky and coupled with a poor touch screen, it takes at least a couple of taps to get anything done before you get used to what"s going on. It"s also one of the slowest software I have used on a camera. For example, it took me five to six attempts to take a simple selfie. You click the shutter button and hold the camera still at least three seconds before you flip it to see the picture. Any sooner and all you see on the screen is blur.
Lastly, the print quality seems equally poor. I clicked and printed just one picture, edited on the camera to add a white frame, and it didn"t even align well on the paper. (I didn"t try printing the original picture.) The print was dull and colors seem faded. However, it could be that the camera is bad and not the printer. Maybe the print would be relatively better if you try printing pictures taken with your smartphone. But then, for that, I would just buy an instant printer rather than a camera + printer.
Even as the local TV manufacturers step up to align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Atma Nirbhara Bharat mission, the unavailability of components and the infrastructure to make them is a major roadblock. “Our country has no alternatives or factories of raw materials, and relies solely on China,” said Avneet Singh Marwah, Director and CEO, Super Plastronics Pvt Ltd, a Kodak brand licensee, to Financial Express Online. However, the new policy changes made by the government have been positive and we have started seeing queries on setting up plants related to new components and panel display, he added. Speaking about the difficulty faced by the local manufacturers in entering the market, he further said that we have entered the era of a new India where millennials and people above the age group of 35 years want to go for affordable brands.
With the lockdown, many companies and our leaders realized that if India will not be self-sufficient it will be very difficult for our future. If we talk about 15 years back, the trade with China was not even 2 billion dollars and now it is more than 100 billion dollars. Things have changed accumulatively, and technology has moved out of our country which we have all realized. I have been very vocal about these topics for the past 5-7 years that India needs to build more raw material factories since we are dependent on other countries for the same. We do not even have alternatives and to create one, the government needs to put in place lucrative policies in manufacturing.
As mentioned earlier, our country has no alternatives and raw materials factories in terms of TV parts and relies solely on China. The new policy changes made by the government have been positive. We have started seeing queries on new components and panel display factories have started discussing setting up plants in India.
The call for atmanirbharta or self-reliance is a great initiative by our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. We at Super Plastronics Private Limited are completely aligned to this vision as we have been making TVs in India for the last 30 years starting from CRT TVs to LED TVs. All Kodak televisions are completely made in India. With the Atmanirbhar Bharat mission, we are hoping that the value addition of 10-15% by TV companies increases to 40-50%. With the policy change, some companies are now willing to invest in India for components manufacturing as well. If in the future, there is any company planning to invest in panel display it will become a huge advantage for our country and its eco-system.
From the last two decades, it has only been the top 3 brands that captured 80% of the market share but times have changed now. We have entered the era of a new India where millennials and people above the age group of 35 years want to go for affordable brands. The prime reason is that the same technology at better or great specs is being offered at an affordable price and we have proved this with our new Kodak CA and XPRO series.
A power move has been taken by the government to license the CBUs. With this, we can easily start assembling TVs in India. More creation of jobs and more manufacturing units will exist, as without more assembling units you cannot have backward integration. It’s an ecosystem that needs to be followed step by step for which the government needs to make a long-term strategy for it to last.
We can see that the government has started acting against value addition for FTA and most of these components were coming from China itself, and to save customs duties, the FTA countries were exporting TV sets. We have seen the government act on the same before as well. This change will also help to stop misdeclaration of custom duty, in ports like Mudra and Calcutta where maximum misdeclaration for TV and TV parts takes place. This is creating a parallel economy and due to this, the gray market has been flourishing for an awfully long time. If the government needs to increase its revenue, it must take some serious action as in the last five years there has been a huge revenue loss of more than 3 billion dollars.

Following the recent sale of Olympus, there are rumors of another celebrated photographic brand has been sold to a private holding company. This time it"s Kodak, whose film and chemistry business (Kodak Alaris) is being sold to a Chinese corporation.
That"s according to a story by Inside Imaging(opens in new tab), which reports that a proposed sale of Kodak"s paper, photochemicals, display and software business was announced internally within Alaris on 07 July.
The report states that the buyer is Sino Promise Holdings, which also distributes Canon and Epson photo printers. According to Inside Imaging it is the largest distributor of Kodak Alaris in the world, supplying 8,000 retailers in the Asia Pacific and Russian territories, and it also manufactures chemicals and a number of paper and film stocks for Kodak (having acquired a factory from Alaris in 2016).
What"s noteworthy is that Kodak"s film business, which accounted for over a third of the company"s revenue over the past year, is not part of the deal. The film unit has been merged with the Kodak Memories division (which comprises photo kiosks, online photo services and retail dye-sub printers), which was previously part of the proposed sale but ultimately was taken off the table.
"The KA insider told Inside Imaging that Sino Promise withdrew at the last minute(opens in new tab) from the sale of a much larger portion of Kodak Alaris due to concerns with the accounts of the document scanning business unit," states the report.
Also key to the deal is that Alaris holds the license to sell Kodak-branded products across various categories, which according to the report makes it "essentially a global marketing operation".
All of this appears to be the culmination of sale rumors that first surfaced in 2019(opens in new tab), and is intertwined with Kodak"s tortured history with splintered brands and pension plans following the collapse of the original business.
If you"re confused, here are the crib notes: Kodak Alaris was founded in 2013, when Eastman Kodak filed for bankruptcy. To resolve a £2.8 billion claim by the UK Kodak Pension Plan (KPP), Alaris was formed with KPP as its sole shareholder to market Kodak-branded photographic and business products.
However, after closing its factory in 2016, Kodak Alaris no longer manufactures its paper, chemistry or film products; its key supplier is actually Eastman Kodak. And Alaris has nothing to do with cameras such as the Kodak Smile Classic(opens in new tab), which is from Eastman Kodak. Though neither or them have anything to do with the whole Kodak cryptocurrency(opens in new tab) thing.Today"s best Kodak Smile Classic deals
