The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max’s improved camera system mainly offers better, faster pictures in low-light conditions, but otherwise it doesn’t affect how the phone works most of the time and isn’t worth the big jump in price for most people.

Of the iPhone 14’s configurations, most people should get the base 128 GB of storage. Paying another $100 for 256 GB is ideal for those who shoot a lot of videos on their phone. If you’re considering the maxed-out 512 GB version because of your usage patterns, you might be better off with an iPhone 14 Pro or Pro Max.

Apple’s iPhone processors have always been fast, and Apple decided to retain the A15 Bionic from the iPhone 13 line. We’ve rarely run into any speed problems on any iPhone over the past few years. It’s reductive to say that “any modern iPhone is fast enough,” but for most use cases, any iPhone you can buy from Apple is generally fast enough. The iPhone 14 is still a bit faster than the iPhone 13, though.

In our experience, the battery life on the iPhone 14 easily got us through a full day. The iPhone 14, like the iPhone 13 and 12 before it, has a main 12-megapixel wide-angle camera lens and a 12-megapixel ultrawide lens. The iPhone 14 doesn’t have a telephoto zoom lens like the iPhone 14 Pro does. You might catch some differences: The iPhone 14 camera’s lower aperture allows it to grab more light and details than the iPhone 13 and SE models. Apple calls its new take on photo processing and rendering the Photonic Engine—but while the photos coming from the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus look good, there isn’t a massive discernible difference compared to photos taken on the iPhone 12 and 13. Colors pop a bit more on the iPhone 14, and you might see more details in your images, especially in low-light results.

Apple has also added autofocus to the iPhone 14’s front-facing “selfie” camera. The entire iPhone 14 lineup includes this feature, and we expect it on future models as well. The front-facing autofocus helps capture fast-moving toddlers, pets, and the like. But this feature doesn’t do much to improve the overall photo quality compared with that of last year’s iPhone model.

Last year’s iPhone 13 introduced Cinematic Mode, a video setting that dynamically changes the focus in your shots, automatically swapping between what’s in the foreground and the background based on factors such as whether the person in front is looking at the camera. Cinematic Mode also allows you to change focus after the fact, because all the depth data is stored in the video file. We found that the feature worked as long as you had good light, but it struggled in low light, and it was limited to a 1080p resolution at 24 frames per second.

The iPhone 14 bumps Cinematic Mode’s resolution to 4K (but if you want more than 24 fps, you’ll need to upgrade to the Pro or Pro Max models). Apple has also improved performance in low-lighting conditions, and while the iPhone 14’s new Action Mode—which uses the iPhone 14’s higher-resolution cameras to remove instability and shaking by cropping the image around the subjects it detects in the video you’re shooting—isn’t quite comparable to gimbal stabilization, it’s not too far off. Action Mode does require a good amount of light for it to work at its best. Shooting outdoors on a fair day will get acceptable results, but your video will look worse with dim indoor lighting.

Just like last year’s model, the iPhone 14’s camera supports 4K HDR Dolby Vision, slow motion at up to 240 fps, and time-lapse with image stabilization, and features 2x optical zoom.

The iPhone 14 has the same size screen as the iPhone 13 (6.1 inches) in an almost identical body; the new phone is 0.01 inch (0.25 mm) thicker but the same height and width. The body is squared off much like that of the iPhone 4 and 5, and this design feels great. We’ve found the iPhone 14, like the iPhone 13 before it, much easier to grip than the iPhone X, XS, or 11, even when the phone is not in a case. The flat screen edges take a bit of getting used to if you’re coming from rounded edges, but ultimately the design is an improvement, and it should make a screen protector, if you choose to use one, easier to install. We also like the body-color options: We were initially unsure about the purple color, which is more like a faded lilac, but came to really like it, and Apple is offering a traditional black color, now called midnight, as well as a cream-white called starlight and a similarly faded blue, along with the standard red version. These all look nice, though there’s one less color this year than there was last year, and buyers hoping for more saturated color options will likely be disappointed.

The iPhone 14 OLED screen is a higher-quality display than that of the iPhone SE, with a resolution of 2532×1170 pixels. OLED provides better contrast and blacker blacks than LCD because pixels on an OLED display emit their own backlight, which can completely turn off while a pixel is displaying blacks; on an LCD, a single panel lights all of the pixels at once, regardless of the color each individual pixel is displaying. And the iPhone 14 has the same maximum brightness level as the iPhone 13, at 800 nits (the unit of measurement for display brightness).

Historically, cell devices have used tiny cards called SIMs to store a user’s number and contacts as well as some cell-carrier information, and changing phones meant a delicate transfer of that SIM from one device to another. Like some other recent phones from competitors and the iPhone SE (3rd gen), Apple’s entire iPhone 14 lineup supports the eSIM standard. An eSIM, or embedded SIM, can’t be removed. Instead, a new number or new carrier information can be added to it without needing to move it from one phone to another. eSIMs even support multiple phone numbers, so you can have your personal line and business line, each with different numbers, on one device.

Public reaction to eSIMS has been a mixed bag regarding user experience with the technology, though our time using it has been largely seamless. We used it for the initial setup on the iPhone 14 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Plus, transferring numbers from one iPhone to another using the eSIM—and back again—with ease.

Unlike the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, the iPhone 14 (and 14 Plus) retains the “notch” containing its front-facing camera and depth sensor that Apple has used since the iPhone X. If you’ve always hated the notch and want to try the new Dynamic Island feature Apple has touted, you’ll have to pay more for the Pro models.

The iPhone 14 supports standard Qi wireless charging at up to 7.5 watts (so you can use wireless chargers you already have or buy one from another brand), as well as Apple’s MagSafe, a magnetic attachment system for accessories and fast wireless charging up to 15 watts with (limited) supported accessories. In our testing, MagSafe charging has proven to be nearly twice as fast as standard Qi charging, but both are slower than a wired connection.

The entire iPhone 14 lineup (and even the 3rd-generation iPhone SE) supports 5G cellular networking, but that alone is not a reason for you to buy this (or any) new phone. Although 5G is theoretically faster than LTE in optimal situations, it still comes with plenty of caveats. If you’re in an area with the right 5G implementation, you might see blazing-fast speeds. Maybe. But carriers are still upgrading their networks with uneven results, and most people aren’t seeing immediate speed boosts.

We still don’t recommend that you take your phone into the pool or ocean, but the iPhone 14 does have an IP68 water-resistance rating, which means it can survive under 6 meters of water for half an hour, an improvement from 2 meters on the iPhone 11 and 1 meter on the iPhone SE. If you spill something on it or drop it in the sink, it’s likely to survive without issue.

As of late 2020, no iPhones come with a charger or Lightning earbuds in the box, though they do include a USB-C–to–Lightning cable. If you need a charger or headphones, we have recommendations.

Apple claims that the iPhone 14’s glass screen is stronger than previous versions thanks to what it calls Ceramic Shield, a process that adds “nano-ceramic crystals” to the glass itself and that iPhone calls “tougher than any smartphone glass.” After a year of using the iPhone 13, which uses the same glass, ours has held up well, with few scratches. Unless you’ve got money to spend that you don’t care about, we still recommend a screen protector.

After having dropped my iPhone 4 while in its case and finding out the screen was cracked, I was determine to find a fix. Before when I had an iPod touch, 2nd generation, the screen was easily removed. I took out the pins from the front of the screen of the iPod; and in the iPhone 3 and 3GS"s case the screen popped out after removing two screws. After buying this expensive phone my self and having to pay for yearly internet usage, I figured, I would take great care of it and skip the care protection plan. I did take extensive care of it, I used a screen protector along with a case and never had any problems until a few days ago. Hold the top button on your phone for about 5 seconds, then slide to turn off. If the damage is too extensive and your touch screen does not work simply hold the top and home buttons together for about 10 seconds.

This step is directly handling the mother board of the iPhone so i can not stress this enough, be careful. first you want to proceed by removing two screws, one flat head and one Philips, the Philips screw is hidden under a water sensor that can be scraped off. The photos below will show you the difference. after you remove those screws and organized them in you sketch begin by freeing up the top of the mother board from the ribbon cables up top. then slowly take it off. proceed with caution.

This is probably the most time consuming step in the entire process for this you will need to remove 10 screws, 6 larger ones with washers on the sides classified as A screws, and 4 smaller ones in the corners classified as B screws. Follow the photo below for thier exact positions. Organize as shown below on a piece of tape.

Installing screen, i could not take a photo of this because i was putting it together two handed. Simply guide the new ribbon cables through the hole that you took the old display out of, you sort of have to play around till the cable and a small metal box fit snugly inside the enclosure. the 3rd photo should give you a good example of how the cable should fit in.

Great instructable, I used it to disassemble an IPhone 4, and as a basic guideline for disassembling an IPhone 4s. Unfortunately I was hoping the screen on the 4s was the same as the screen on the 4. Not so, the connectors for the A screws are in different places. Ah Well, now I am using the "ible as a guide on how to put them both back together. :)0

Hi, thanks for the instructions, they are perfect. I have a slight problem though, ive now got a white screen. I have tried re-booting etc and checked all the wires are present and correct but its still no good, can you help please ?

Even though , your post helped me a lot with my schematic and I watched some video tutorials during the repairings ! I waited almost a month till my replacement parts and tools arrived and I was anxious to do it myself, cuz here in Bulgaria, othorized repair shops want tripple the coast I bought the items ! For the hour my Iphone 4 works again it is doing fine, but I"m a bit worried for my Wi-Fi signal, becaouse it"s a bit low. So I was wondering if I did something wrong when I repaired it?

The iPhone X, released in 2017, is differs drastically from all of its predecessors. It was the first iPhone to boast a stunning OLED screen, the first to use Face ID, and the first to ditch the iconic iPhone home button for an updated continuous screen appearance. Despite its veteran status as a five-year-old phone, its modern appearance and high quality have kept it in demand as an original phone, a second-hand buy, a hand-me-down, and a refurbished model.

Like any smartphone, there are always a few issues that crop up over time. We’ve compiled a list of common iPhone X problems and collected a series of fixes to make sure your iPhone X works perfectly.

Restart your iPhone entirely by holding the power button and a volume button at the same time until it powers down. This can fix some buggy processes that can sap your battery life.

Clean your connectors. Observe the port at the bottom of your iPhone and make sure it is entirely clean. If there’s dust or gunk build-up, use an isopropyl alcohol solution and something soft, like a cotton swab or paintbrush, to very gently clean it out.

If the error message persists, take your iPhone into the Apple Store for repairs. There’s probably some corrosion that distorting the inner pins and how they fit — this is especially likely if you got your iPhone X wet.

iOS 15 is the latest version of the iPhone operating system and every model of the iPhone X is compatible with iOS 15. When something goes wrong with the download, you should be able to fix it.

Check your storage. iOS 15 takes up 2.2GB of storage, and if your iPhone is packed with photos and files, there may not be enough room for it to install. You should see a notation when the iPhone does not have enough space to install an update. You can check storage by going to Settings >General > iPhone Storage.

Plug your iPhone into your charger and try again. Operating system installations generally need at least a 50% charge or direct connection to a power source.

If you’ve owned the iPhone X since its launch in 2017, chances are you’ve encountered lag and slowdowns in performance over the years. This is to be expected. Users on Reddit and Apple support forums have described many instances of both issues.

The iPhone X’s speakers provide excellent audio quality, but they’re still susceptible to debris and dust. Reddit users have been complaining their iPhone X speakers sound muffled or can only be heard when switched to landscape mode. Before you do anything, make sure your iPhone is not set to silent mode, and that you have turned up the volume (seriously).

Some people have encountered call issues with VoLTE, so try turning it off. Go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Enable 4G, and switch to Data only to see if it makes any difference.

Some users have experienced problems with iPhone X charging. Threads at the Apple support forum describe the iPhone X refusing to charge at all, slow charging, or wireless charging not working properly.

You want to make sure that the fault doesn’t lie with your charging cable, charger, or charging pad, so start by testing it with another device, or test your iPhone X with a different charger.

A few iPhone X owners suffered from a touchscreen glitch that results in the screen reacting without being touched and sometimes in the screen not responding to touch properly. There are several threads at the Apple support forum about these issues, and Apple has acknowledged that some iPhone X displays “may experience touch issues due to a component that might fail on the display module.” While there are no longer free repairs on such an old phone, there are still ways to rectify the problem.

Clean off your touchscreen. To do that, first turn it off and unplug any cables. Then, find a soft, lint-free clothand dampen it with warm water. Start cleaning the touchscreen by wiping gently but firmly from one end to the other.

People have quickly gotten used to unlocking their iPhones with their faces, but it seems that Face ID does not perform perfectly for everyone. Face ID fails most often after a software update.

If nothing has worked, then take your iPhone X into an Apple Store or to an authorized service provider and ask for a repair. Apple has some testing procedures in place for this problem and it might require a rear camera repair.

We’ve seen a few reports at the Apple forums and the MacRumors forum about the iPhone X screen refusing to turn back on, refusing to turn off, or freezing up intermittently.

If there’s any visible damage, or you suspect physical damage from a drop or bump could be the cause, then contact Apple and take your iPhone into an Apple Store or authorized repair shop.

Shortly after the release of the iPhone X, Apple put out a statement about the OLED display used in the phone. The company noted that over time, “image persistence” or “burn-in” could appear. Burn-in occurs when a static image is left on the screen for a long time and gets burned into the display permanently. For example, if you leave your iPhone X screen on for quite a while sitting on the home screen, the icon of an app may get burned into the screen, so that you can see its faint outline when watching a video. OLED screens are often prone to the problem, but it’s not likely to affect most people.

Apple recommends you reduce the brightness on your phone. To reduce the brightness on your iPhone X, pull down on the right side of your screen to open the Control Center and adjust the brightness slider.

Turn on Auto-Lock. Since static images are much more likely to cause burn-in, you’ll want to make sure that your screen will turn off when you’re not using the phone. To turn on Screen-Lock, go to Settings > Displays & Brightness > Auto-Lock. Set your display to turn off after 30 or 60 seconds of inactivity.

Several users on Reddit have reported that the iPhone X stops working when they are out in cold temperatures. The problem typically only lasts a few seconds, though some have experienced a longer freeze-up. Some common-sense procedures can help.

According to an Apple Insider report, a handful of iPhone X users see a continuous vertical green line on one side of the screen — also referred to as the green line of death. The line doesn’t appear immediately after turning the phone on, but after being used for some time. Samsung, the iPhone X display manufacturer, had a similar problem with the Samsung Galaxy S7. This is a known hardware problem for which users are not at fault and for which there is no software fix. Luckily, it is not a widespread problem.

Some users have noticed a crackling noise when they use their iPhone X’s speakers at a higher volume. Many of these reports were seen among Apple forums, Reddit, and in the MacRumors forum. This problem is not widespread.

Apple has published a new support document that says the iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max will present customers with a warning if the devices are unable to verify a genuine display after a screen repair job. “If you need to replace your iPhone display, it’s important for certified technicians who use genuine Apple display parts to repair it,” the page reads. “Replacements not performed by Apple, authorized service providers, or certified technicians might not follow proper safety and repair procedures and could result in improper function or issues with display quality or safety.”

Apple goes over a laundry list of problems that could arise if your display is swapped the wrong way or with a non-genuine part, such as multi-touch problems, issues with screen color accuracy and brightness, or True Tone failing to work properly. “Additionally, repairs that don’t properly replace screws or cowlings might leave behind loose parts that could damage the battery, cause overheating, or result in injury.”

The company isn’t afraid of nagging customers about this, either. Apple says that a notification will appear on the affected iPhone’s lock screen for 4 days after a problem is first detected, then it’ll move to the main settings menu for 15 more days. After all that, it gets pushed away to Settings -> General -> About.

According to Apple, this new measure only applies to its brand new iPhones and not previous models. Even if it can’t be verified as genuine, the display isn’t prevented from functioning normally by iOS.

This new screen verification warning follows another alert that Apple recently began showing customers when iPhones detect an unauthorized battery replacement. “We take the safety of our customers very seriously and want to make sure any battery replacement is done properly,” an Apple spokesperson said about that notification, which was criticized by right to repair advocates because it also disables the iPhone’s battery statistics and health data. “There are now over 1,800 Apple authorized service providers across the US so our customers have even more convenient access to quality repairs.” Apple recently said it would make genuine parts available to more independent repair businesses.

Raising a safety issue with batteries is perfectly reasonable; batteries can be dangerous. But should the company be this aggressive about swapped displays? On the other hand, this is a pretty direct way of alerting customers that they might’ve been given a bum display by their local repair shop. And if you’re buying a used iPhone 11 at some point in the future, there’ll be no wondering whether the screen was replaced with a cheap, non-Apple part.

However, there’s an added element to this display notification that seems a little alarming, too. Apple makes it sound as if the iPhone might report back to the company that you’re using a display that couldn’t be verified and tie that information to the device’s service history. This could potentially cause problems if you need to get something else on your iPhone fixed down the line.

You might see an additional notification that says, “Apple has updated the device information for this iPhone.” This means that Apple has updated the device information maintained for your iPhone for service needs, safety analysis, and to improve future products.

Breaking an iPhone screen is never a fun experience. While nearly every electronics repair store will help you fix your iPhone, the job isn’t free, and you could walk out with a much lighter wallet. So, here are all your repair options, plus the prices you can expect to pay for an iPhone screen replacement.

I’ll get one thing out of the way right now; Apple has a stranglehold on iPhone repairs. You don’t need to visit an Apple store to replace an iPhone screen, but the company goes out of its way to make other options less appealing. So, buckle up for a bit of disappointment.

For whatever reason, Apple is very good at marketing its repair service. Everyone knows that they can walk into an Apple Store, drop off their broken device, and (usually) pick it back up within 24 hours.

You can even mail an iPhone to Apple for repair! Of course, snail mail is rarely necessary, because Apple offers its repair service through select “Authorized Apple Service Providers” like Best Buy. These “authorized” providers follow the same repair process as Apple, so you can receive quality service even when you don’t live near an Apple Store.

But Apple overcharges for repairs. If you don’t have an AppleCare+ subscription, you can expect to pay several hundred dollars for a screen replacement.

With an AppleCare+ subscription, these repairs cost just $29. I strongly suggest paying for AppleCare+ (which is between $3.99 and $13.49 a month) if you’re super clumsy or if you’re buying an iPhone for a child.

Bear in mind that these prices apply to all Authorized Apple Service Providers. If you wander into a Best Buy looking for a screen replacement, you’ll pay the same price that Apple charges at its stores. The benefit, of course, is that Best Buy and other authorized locations follow the same repair process as Apple’s “Genius Bar.”

One last note—some carriers, including Verizon, are happy to take broken phones for trade-in. Swapping your busted iPhone for a new device may be more cost-effective than paying for repairs at an Apple Store, especially if you own a newer model of iPhone.

If you’re just looking for a screen replacement, you can save money by avoiding “authorized” service centers. Third-party repair stores charge very little for screen replacements, as their prices aren’t dictated by Apple.

Every small business is different, so I can’t tell you what your neighborhood repair shop charges for an iPhone screen replacement. That said, their prices are lower than Apple’s, often by $100 or more. And because small repair shops like to build relationships with their community, they’re often willing to cut deals with first-time or repeat customers.

Unfortunately, only Authorized Apple Service Providers can order official iPhone parts. Some independent shops salvage official parts from other iPhones, but still, there’s a decent chance you’ll end up with an unofficial replacement screen. (Which isn’t a big deal for older iPhones, but unofficial screens for newer iPhones are much less durable than the “real thing.”)

Apple also likes to restrict some repairs at a software level. Performing certain repairs without Apple’s calibration tools (which independent stores can’t access) will actually disable features like Face ID. But this is only a problem with brand spankin’ new iPhone models—historically, Apple lifts screen repair restrictions a few months after each iPhone’s release. (You can now replace the iPhone 13’s display without consequence, for example.)

You can’t save money without putting in the work. Replacing your iPhone screen at home is usually cheaper than visiting an Apple store or an independent repair shop. And yeah, there are a ton of resources to help you get the job done.

The best resource, in my opinion, is iFixit. The gang at iFixit regularly publishes repair guides and sells replacement parts for popular products. You can even buy one of iFixit’s screen replacement bundles, which includes all the parts and tools you need to fix your iPhone’s broken screen.

So, if you want to replace your iPhone’s screen at home, iFixit is still your best option. Just keep in mind that iFixit kits for newer iPhones are still a bit expensive, and in some cases, they may be more expensive than a visit to an independent repair shop.
