Apple will start shipping the iPhone XR this week, and ahead of its launch, the company has unveiled repair pricing. If you crack that notched LCD display, it’ll cost you $199 to fix (if you don’t have AppleCare+). That’s significantly cheaper than the OLEDs on the iPhone XS and XS Max: the XS costs $279, and the XS Max costs $329. Meanwhile, a battery replacement will cost $69 across the three new devices.

Repairs related to “other damage,” like a shattered glass back, cost $399 on the iPhone XR versus $549 on the XS and $599 on the XS Max. The iPhone XS and X from last year have the same repair costs overall. AppleCare+ covers two accidental damage incidents at $99, regardless of your iPhone model, while a screen repair through the program costs $29. AppleCare+ costs $149 for the iPhone XR, 8 Plus, and 7 Plus and $199 for the XS or XS Max. That covers users for two years, so basically one repair a year. It’s worth the price if you actually take advantage of the repairs.

This is also a good time to remind you that Apple’s discounted battery repairs for the iPhone 6 and later expire on December 31st. It currently costs $29, but will jump to $49 in the new year. The iPhone X’s battery repair cost will rise to $69. Also, if you repair your phone with “unauthorized modifications” you likely won’t be serviced by Apple and might have to buy a new device.

You can replace your own iPhone screen with a little tech savvy and a bit of patience. The repair requires disassembly, however, so you shouldn’t attempt this fix if you’re not comfortable doing that.

Your best bet is to buy a complete screen assembly, which is a much easier repair than replacing just the front glass or digitizer. Expect to pay between $45 and $280 for a new iPhone screen, depending on your model, where you buy parts and whether you buy a standard LCD or premium OLED screen. Don’t want to fix your own iPhone screen? You can opt for professional repair instead. Local repair shops can often replace your screen in a few hours, either in-store or at your location. Online mail-in repair services take longer, but they’re good options if you don’t have a local repair store.

Expect to pay between $119 and $520 for professional iPhone screen replacement, depending on your model and repair shop. Note that Apple’s own repair service tops out at $329 for out-of-warranty screen repair. Apple also uses OEM (original equipment manufacturer parts), while many repair shops use less expensive aftermarket parts.

Mail-in repair services like iFixYouri and My Broken Phone typically charge between $100 and $200, but they don’t always list pricing for every repair on their websites. Sometimes, it’s because they haven’t updated their service offering lately, especially if newer devices aren’t listed. Other times, they can make the repair, but it’s too uncommon to stock parts.

In some cases, the repair is difficult and likely to damage the device, so it’s not profitable for the company to offer it. Or, the required parts are so expensive it’s not worth fixing. Either way, if the repair you need isn’t listed on a repair shop’s website, it’s a good idea to contact them anyway to see if they offer it.

Do you have iPhone insurance? If so, you can file a claim directly with your insurance company, who might offer a choice between mail-in, in-store or on-location repair services. Some companies will overnight a refurbished replacement iPhone rather than repair and return yours.

Should you fix your iPhone screen or sell it broken? You can base your decision on how much your iPhone is worth broken versus repaired, especially if you plan to upgrade soon.

For example, at the time of this writing, an iPhone X 64GB on the Verizon network was worth $255 in good condition. Here’s a breakdown of its net value after different repair options.

Next, compare the net value after repair to what your iPhone is worth in broken condition. At the time of this writing, a broken iPhone X 64GB on the Verizon network was worth $110.

As the table shows, our example iPhone will have significantly more value if you repair it yourself or file an insurance claim through AppleCare+ or Verizon.

However, SquareTrade insurance leaves a net value of $4 less than the phone is worth broken, while out-of-warranty Apple repair leaves a net value of $134 less, which means you’d lose money by going with those repair options.

The independent repair shop option leaves a net value of just $26 more than selling it broken, which might make you question whether repair is worth the hassle.

Of course, your decision depends not only on the value, but also how long you plan to keep your iPhone. If you intend to hold on to it for a few years, it’s cheaper to repair it than to buy a new iPhone.

If you plan to upgrade soon and trade in your old phone, however, it’s worth comparing your options to see whether you’ll get more value after repair or selling it as-is.

The iPhone XR was Apple"s best selling 2018 model. It also became the top-selling and the most popular smartphone globally in Q3 2019. As of September 2020, the iPhone XR has sold 77.4 million units worldwide, making it the eighth best-selling smartphone of all time.

In 2019, Apple started assembling the iPhone XR in India.US$499. The price was subsequently lowered to US$369.iPhone 12 Pro with its Max variant were discontinued and removed from Apple"s website after the announcement of the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro on September 14, 2021, but is still available through third party retailers today.

The iPhone XR was announced by Phil Schiller on September 12, 2018, at the Steve Jobs Theater in the Apple Park campus, alongside the higher-priced iPhone XS and XS Max.

The XR has a similar design to the iPhone X and iPhone XS. However, it has slightly larger bezels, an aluminum frame, and is available in a wide variety of colors. Similar to other X-branded iPhones, all models come with a black front. The XR has an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance, which means it can be immersed in 1-metre deep water for up to 30 minutes.

Released as part of the same twelfth generation, the XR has similar hardware to the XS, but with a few features removed to reduce the price. The XR features the same system-on-chip (SoC) as the XS and XS Max, the Apple A12 Bionic chip built with a 7 nanometer

The XR has an LCD display known as "Liquid Retina" instead of the OLED screen used on the X, XS, and XS Max. The display on the XR has a resolution of 1792 × 828 pixels and a pixel density of 326 ppi, compared with 458 ppi on other X-branded iPhones. However, it has 120 Hz Touch Sample Rate which is the same as the XS and XS Max.3D Touch, the XR comes with Haptic Touch where the user long-presses until they feel a vibration from the Taptic Engine. The screen-to-body ratio of the XR is 79.3%, much higher than the 67.5% of the iPhone 8 Plus but is still lower than most other phones in its price category.

Unlike most other phones in the X-series, the XR ships with a single camera on the rear on the phone, featuring exactly the same main camera sensor as on the XS and XS Max,DxOMark gave the camera on the iPhone XR a rating of 101, giving the title "Top-ranked single-lens phone".depth of field using a combination of the focus pixels on the image sensor and AI, resulting in more limitations including lower resolution depth data and subjects not being close enough due to the wide-angle lens being used instead of the missing telephoto lens. Just like the iPhone XS and XS Max, the iPhone XR also offers an adjustable depth of field through software, allowing the user to adjust the background bokeh effect after taking a photo.

The XR initially shipped with iOS 12 installed out of the box and is compatible with iOS 13, which was released to the public on September 19, 2019.iOS 14 on September 16, 2020iOS 15 on September 20, 2021,iOS 16 on September 12, 2022.

Some online media outlets criticized the iPhone XR"s display for having a low resolution and a low pixel per inch density, relative to other phones on the market at the time of release at the price point.

Apple, as part of an environmental initiative, removed the EarPods and power adapter from all new iPhone boxes starting in October 2020, including the iPhone XR. It is claimed that removing these items will reduce e-waste and permit a smaller iPhone box, allowing more devices to be shipped simultaneously to decrease carbon footprint. Apple now includes a USB-C to Lightning cable, which is compatible with increasingly prevalent USB-C charging sources, but incompatible with the previous (and currently more common) USB-A power adapter that Apple included with its devices, leading to Apple recommending users who don"t have a USB-C based charging source to use existing USB-A to Lightning cables or buying a USB-C power adapter separately.

At Mobile Defenders, we try our best to give our customers all of the information they need in order to purchase the product they’re looking for. Below you will find information on our different iPhone XR screen assembly offerings and which markets they are best for.

Our CHOICE assemblies for iPhone XR include in-cell LCDs. These assemblies are COG (Chip on Glass) - meaning the IC chip is fused right on to the glass. Due to this, the assembly will become hot to the touch after extended usage. The main benefit of this assembly is price; it is a great option for competitive areas.

Our SELECT assembly for iPhone XR includes COF (Chip on Flex) assemblies, which are relatively new to the industry. At Mobile Defenders, we strive to educate our customers in order to help them make informed product decisions. We’ve decided to add COF assemblies to our SELECT line due to their similarities to original specifications.

COF assemblies are different than the standard Aftermarket COG (Chip on Glass) assemblies because they have an IC Chip that is bonded to the flex versus being adhered to the glass. This feature provides many benefits such as higher reliability, less damage, better heat distribution, reduced weight, and more. *Changing the Driver IC from a glass mounting to a flex mounting frees up 1.33mm of vertical space on the LCD glass, providing a better fit and more usable viewing area. (see images for a visual representation).

The image above represents how the IC chip placement affects the size of the LCD. When the chip is mounted to the glass, the LCD viewing space is slightly smaller to make room for the chip. Mounting the chip to the flex frees up about 1.33mm of space, allowing for an LCD viewing space that is sized the same as the original.

Our PRIME assembly includes an original LCD. Although this is our most expensive assembly for iPhone XR, it will provide your customer with quality that is the closest to OEM. For customers who want performance and reliability, this is the best option.

LCD Replacement normally takes about 35 – 60 minutes, in some cases if the frame is bent – we’ll need a little bit more time to get it back to its original condition.

Software Repairs time varies and depends on what kind of issue you’re facing. Normally we take cell phones with software related problems for at least 1 hour, however if the issue is difficult (e.g. dead boot loader, corrupted EFS) – then we’d prefer to have your device for 24 hours.

Liquid Damaged Recovery is a time consuming process, thus we usually take phones for at least one day – ultrasonic cleaning, corroded contacts and pins take a while to get cleaned up.

Announced at the same time as the iPhone XS, but not made available to the market until a few weeks later, the iPhone XR is intended to be a more affordable option for those who want an iOS device.

The biggest differences which are likely to be of interest to photographers come down to the display and the camera. The iPhone XR has a bigger display, however it’s a lower resolution LCD screen, compared with the high resolution OLED of the iPhone XS.

Meanwhile, unlike with the iPhone XS, the iPhone XR has just a single camera. It uses a 12-megapixel f/1.8 wide-angle camera, leaving you without the telephoto optic found on the iPhone XS. You do get optical image stabilisation, Portrait Mode, and 4K video recording at up to 60fps, though. On the front of the phone is a TrueDepth 7 megapixel selfie camera.

You can pick up the iPhone XR in three different size capacities (64GB, 128GB and 256GB), while it’s available in six different colours. At the time of writing, the iPhone XR retails for £749 for the minimum storage capacity, up to £899 for the largest. You can also buy it as part of a contract, with varying prices.

It’s available in a range of different colours – including the bright blue model we’ve been using for this review. One of the cutbacks for this phone is the fact that it uses an LCD, rather than an OLED. It also has a larger bezel around the display, so although the 6.1-inch screen is physically larger than the iPhone XS’s 5.8-inch screen, the screen to body ratio is actually worse.

Like the iPhone XS, the iPhone XR has the controversial “notch” at the top of the screen. These days, a notch is a much more common design element, but if you hate them, there’s not really a way to get around it with any of the modern iPhones.

Despite the fact that its an LCD screen, the display is still bright and detailed, and certainly when viewed in isolation, you’ll be hard pushed to spot too much of a big difference between it and a standard iPhone XS screen – so you better hope your best mate doesn’t leave theirs lying next to yours regularly.

There are several ways to unlock the iPhone XR’s screen, including using Face ID or a PIN. There’s no fingerprint sensor, as is common for current iPhones. You can access the iPhone XR’s camera directly from the lock screen, with a firm press on the camera icon. If accessing the camera this way, you’ll only be able to see the images you’ve taken in your current session, needing to unlock the phone completely to see older pictures. You’ll also need to unlock the phone completely to access certain camera settings.

The iPhone’s native camera app is extremely simple and straightforward to use. This can be seen as both a positive and a negative, depending on how you look at things. Little has changed in the past few years of iPhone camera apps, so it’s also very familiar to anyone coming from an older model.

Launching directly in the standard Photo mode when you start up the camera, there are also a few other modes which can be accessed by swiping left or right on the screen. For stills, in addition to the standard Photo mode, you’ve got Portrait, Square and Pano. For video, there’s standard Video, Slo-Mo and Time-Lapse.

In the Standard photo mode, you don’t have a whole lot of control over camera settings. Good news for keeping things simple, you can point and shoot and feel assured of getting a good shot most of the time. If you want to adjust exposure compensation, you can tap an area of the screen, wait a split-second for the sun icon to appear, then run your finger up and down the screen to adjust brightness.

The other stils shooting modes are fairly self-explanatory. The Square mode shoots photos in a 1:1 ratio – the only difference being that you can’t use Live Photos if you shoot this way. A Live Photo is a short video clip which accompanies an image. Pano requires you to sweep the phone across the scene in order to capture an ultra-wide angle shot.

If you want to take greater control over settings, it’s possible to download third-party apps. With such apps, you might also be able to shoot in raw format, but you can’t do that directly from the native camera. Speaking of image formats, by default, the iPhone XR shoots in the “HEIF” format – High Efficiency Image Format. These days, this is a format which is more widely compatible than ever before, but you might prefer to switch to shooting in JPEG for more confidence that your images can be read by other machines, or via email.

The iPhone XR has the same Portrait mode that the iPhone XS has, but with a couple of crucial differences. As the iPhone XR has just one lens, it will create a shallow depth of field effect using software online. Additionally, while you can use the iPhone XS to create bokeh behind any kind of subject, with the iPhone XR, portrait mode is exactly that – for human subjects only. If you try to use it with non-human subjects, you’ll be greeted with a “No person detected” warning – bad news for pet lovers.

It’s possible to shoot at a variety of different frame rates and resolutions for video with the iPhone XR. To choose between the different options, you have to head out of the camera app and to the main settings menu in the phone. It’s a bit of a long-winded process that’s not hugely user friendly, especially if you want to quickly change between options. Although it’s possible to shoot at up to 4K at 60fps, bear in mind that the fairly low resolution of the phone’s screen means that you can’t take advantage of such high resolutions. You may also find that you want to shoot in a lower resolution to save space on your device.

As with all iPhones, it’s not possible to expand the storage for the iPhone XR once you’ve already bought a model. If you’re somebody who is going to take a large number of videos and pictures, it’s probably a good idea to buy the largest capacity phone that you can afford.

Colours in favourable lighting conditions are vibrant without being too over the top – in fact landscape shots have a very natural look to them. Detail is also well rendered when shooting at low ISOs, too.

One of the sacrifices of choosing this model over the iPhone XS is that you only get a single wide-angle lens, rather than an additional telephoto zoom optic. You could choose to use digital zoom to get closer to the subject, but image degradation is fairly obvious, so it’s best to avoid if possible.

As light drops, image quality is less impressive. Images taken in very dark conditions appear a little smudgy in places – so while they’re probably going to be more than fine for using on social media sites and the like, there are certainly much better smartphones on the market for low-light shooting, such as the Huawei P20 Pro, which you can buy for around the same price.

Another consequence of only having one lens is that Portrait mode is not quite as convincing, using computational algorithms to make a judgement on whether something should be blurred or not. It works reasonably well when your human subject is on a fairly uncomplicated background, but as soon as you bring in any kind of pattern effect, the outline is a little more obvious. It’s also disappointing not to be able to use the effect with other subjects – something which the Google Pixel 3 (and the Google Pixel 2) can manage, despite also only having a single lens.

If you’re a fan of iOS, you’ll already be aware just how expensive owning an iPhone is. With the XR, you have the opportunity to pick one up at a slightly lower price than the top-of-the-line iPhone XS will set you back.

However, for the reduction in price, you have to make quite a few sacrifices – and if you’re a photographer, or someone who is particularly interested in using your phone to take pictures, unfortunately one of them is to the camera.

While it’s still a perfectly serviceable camera, it’s something we’d be more likely to recommend to somebody who’s not overly bothered about their phone’s camera performance, or is happy to make a compromise in order to stay within the Apple family.

Despite the iPhone XR being a “budget” option, it still retails for the best part of £800. For the same price, you could pick up several of the top-of-the-line Android phones currently on the market, such as the Huawei P20 Pro. For not much more, you could also get a Samsung Galaxy Note 9 or a Huawei Mate 20 Pro. It also feels like if you’re going to spend £749 on a phone, it’s worth making the additional £250 payment to pick up the much better iPhone XS.

Only having one lens makes the iPhone XS feel more like a mid-range phone. Comparable Android devices, such as the OnePlus 6 can be picked up for under £500, and perhaps makes more sense for those whom photography is important, but so is budget.

On the plus side, having a single lens hasn’t stopped the iPhone XR offering the very popular Portrait mode, albeit only for use with human subjects. It produces results which are fairly impressive considering there’s just a single lens, but it doesn’t match the Google Pixel 3, or even the Google Pixel 2 for that matter – both of which also only use a single lens.

Putting all other considerations aside, the iPhone XR will no doubt still sell extremely well. If you’re heavily invested in the iOS ecosystem, it’s the cheapest entry into owning a current iPhone, so is recommended for iPhone fans who are on a (slightly) restricted budget.

Not because of the strength of the spec – the iPhone XS is slightly ahead in a lot of areas – but what you"re "saving" by going for this model far outweighs what you"re losing. A multitude of colors, very good battery life and a lower price? If you want a new iPhone, check this one out first.

The iPhone XR is the best iPhone of the year. Yes, the iPhone XS and XS Max have better screens and more versatile cameras, but neither of them look as gorgeous as the XR in yellow, blue, or coral. The iPhone XR (pronounced “ten-R”) is also significantly more affordable and carries many of the best features from the flagships. It’s an unquestionably superb value at $750, especially if you’re still shopping around for an iPhone and the $1,000 price tag on the XS is bringing you down.
