I solved it by switching from HDMI to DVI cable between my computer and my screen. This is wierd since it worked with HDMI cable and 2560x1440 resolution in windows 7... Anyway maybe this can help other people with this issue.

this post. Turns out my DVI cable was a "singl-link" instead of a "dual-link" one. Hence I could not get the full 2560x1440 resolution. Replaced the cable and works fine now.
