Prices and specs have been announced for the new all-electric Fiat 500 city car – an alternative to the MINI Electric, the Honda e and the Peugeot e-208. You’ll be able to order this compact electric car in December 2020 and it’ll cost from £19,995, including the £3,000 Plug-in Car Grant.

The new Fiat 500 range is split out into four models: Action, Passion, Icon and La Prima. All prices shown include the £3,000 government Plug-in Car Grant.

You do at least get a 7.0-inch digital driver’s display, rear parking sensors and 15-inch alloy wheels as standard. The Fiat 500 Action is only available as a hatchback, not a 500C convertible.

The Fiat 500 Passion comes with a larger 42kWh battery, so it can manage 199 miles between charges. Unlike the Action (which can charge at a maximum of 50kW) the Passion model can charge using 85kW fast chargers – so you can charge it from 0-80% full in about 35 minutes. Its more powerful 118hp electric motor means it can do 0-60mph in nine seconds.

The Fiat 500 Passion also comes with LED daytime running lights, cruise control, climate control and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Unlike the Action model, you can get the 500 Passion as a hatchback or a convertible.

Top-spec La Prima versions come with the same batteries and motor as Passion and Icon versions. They also get larger 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, leather seats, chrome trim for the doors and dashboard, and a panoramic glass roof (in hatchback models, only).

Fiat has also announced that it’ll launch a (slightly) more practical version of the Fiat 500, called the 500 3+1. This model takes the standard three-door 500 and adds a small back door on the right-hand side to make it easier for passengers to climb into the back seats. This new model is no larger than the standard 500 and only weighs 30kg more, so its performance and range are unaffected.

It’s difficult to make a retro-styled car, such as the Fiat 500, look modern. So, rather than add a bunch of fiddly details, Fiat’s gone back to basics for the new 500 and made it look smoother, more rounded and even more minimalist than before.

Just like the old car, you’ll be able to get the new Fiat 500 as a 500C convertible. Fiat claims it’s the first purely electric four-seater convertible ever. It’s a bit more expensive than the hard-top model but comes with all the same kit.

OK, so the new Fiat 500 looks pretty similar to the old car on the outside, but it’s a totally different story inside. There’s a brand-new seven-inch digital dial display instead of traditional dials, and you get a big 10-inch touchscreen on the dashboard with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring.

One of the best things about the old Fiat 500 was how easy it was to personalise. Fiat’s determined to make this new car just as customisable and has roped in fashion designers Bvlgari, Kartell and Armani to make their own unique 500s. Sure, you won’t be able to get these exact upgrades on your own 500 – they’re just their to get your creative juices flowing…

The new Fiat 500 comes with a 42kWh battery that gives it a 199-mile range. You can recharge your 500 using a 3kW wall box, but that’ll take all night – literally. You’ll be better off getting the optional 7.4kW wall box that’ll fully charge its batteries in a little over six hours.

The quickest way to charge the new Fiat 500 is using an 85kW public fast charger. These can top it up from empty to 80% charged in 35 minutes, and add a useful 30 miles of charge in just five minutes.

The Fiat 500 comes with a 118hp electric motor with enough poke to accelerate from 0-60mph in nine seconds. That doesn’t sound particularly fast but the new 500 will do 0-30mph in three seconds, which is nippy enough in town and faster than most small city cars.

Also handy in town is the new 500’s automatic emergency braking that’ll spot pedestrians and cyclists in your path and automatically apply the brakes if it thinks you’re about to hit them. There’s also adaptive cruise control that’ll accelerate and brake for you on motorways to keep you a safe distance from the car ahead.

There are three driving modes, Normal, Range and Sherpa. Range mode uses the motor to recharge the batteries when you brake to help boost the Fiat 500’s range, while Normal model tones down this ‘regenerative braking’ effect.

The Sherpa function limits the Fiat 500’s top speed to 50mph (down from 93mph) and turns off the air conditioning. These extreme measures will be useful in an emergency when you really need to eke out every last mile to reach a charging point.

Details on the 2015 Fiat 500, which will feature a handful of updates, have now been released a week before the car is showcased at the 2014 New York Auto Show.

The most significant change is a 7-inch TFT (Thin-Film Transistor) display in the instrument cluster, which places the speed readout prominently in the center, along with an image of the car.

These models are currently available only with a five-speed manual, while other gasoline 500 models are available with either a manual or automatic transmission.

Fiat has not released updated fuel economy numbers for 2015, but the 2014 500 is EPA-rated at 34 mpg combined (31 mpg city, 40 mpg highway) with the manual transmission, and 30 mpg combined (27 mpg city, 34 mpg highway) with the automatic.

The manual-only 2014 500 Turbo has identical combined and highway ratings to the non-turbocharged, automatic 500, but gains 1 mpg city, figures shared with the Abarth models.

Auto Show, will include a number of interior enhancements for increased driver convenience and ease of use, including an advanced instrument panel with a 7-inch high-definition TFT (Thin Film Transistor) cluster display.

The new 7-inch TFT cluster allows drivers to easily monitor data like speed, fuel level, Eco index and trip information. While on the main screen, an image of the vehicle is surrounded by information, including distance traveled, gas mileage and range. A parking screen helps drivers while moving in reverse if the vehicle is equipped with Rear Park Assist. Other screen options include a radio screen that displays information about the station selected and a telephone screen showing call information.

When the vehicle is in Sport mode, the TFT display becomes more aggressive in appearance, complementing the Sport mode"s more engaged driving experience.

Other interior updates for 2015 include a redesigned center console. To make it more useful for drivers, the revamped console includes a new cup holder design and an additional, conveniently located USB port that is fully functional and integrated with the radio. The 2015 Fiat 500 models will also include Bluetooth streaming audio in addition to the already standard Bluetooth phone connectivity.

April 7, 2014 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - The high-performance 2015 Fiat 500 Abarth and Abarth Cabrio, to be showcased at the 2014 New York International Auto Show, will be available with an optional six-speed automatic transmission, helping to broaden the customer base for the high-performance version of the Fiat 500.

"Adding an optional automatic transmission makes the Abarth and Abarth Cabrio accessible to an entirely new group of customers who want to enjoy the thrilling driving experience of the Fiat 500 Abarth with the convenience of an automatic gearbox," said Jason Stoicevich, Head of FIAT Brand for North America, Chrysler Group LLC.

To ensure the 2015 Fiat 500 Abarth and Abarth Cabrio remain true to their high-performance and track-ready heritage, the six-speed automatic transmission – Aisin AW6F25 six-speed – has been reinforced with more clutch plates and a more robust heat treatment to allow for higher torque capability. The Sport mode calibration allows for an even more engaged driving experience with special features such as fuel-cut upshifts, rev-matching downshifts, brake-assist downshifts, corner gear hold and fast-off gear hold, as well as a more aggressive pedal map.

Both the automatic and manual transmission options for the 2015 Fiat Abarth and Abarth Cabrio will be paired with the 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo engine. Both Abarth models will continue to include the segment-exclusive Abarth Track Experience, which allows Fiat 500 Abarth drivers to learn how to maximize their driving skills with a full day of professional driving instruction.

The Fiat 500 Turbo was introduced in 2012 for driving enthusiasts who wanted the Italian style of the Fiat 500 with more power and performance for their daily drive. For the 2015 model year, the Fiat 500 Turbo will also offer the Aisin AW6F25 six-speed automatic transmission as an option to pair with the 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo engine.

As one of the more affordable turbocharged vehicles available, the Fiat 500 Turbo amplifies the Cinquecento"s power, performance and personalization levels while keeping the character of the iconic Fiat 500.

The 2015 Fiat 500 minicar blends practical fun and quirky cuteness, each quality chosen in just the right amount to win over urban commuters as well as those who want a small but distinctive second or third car. It"s an excellent city car for tiny parking places—and its personality can change from fuel-efficient to surprisingly sporty or entirely electric, depending on model chosen. All share a high enjoyment factor; the Fiat 500 is a car that makes owners and onlookers alike smile.

We"re particularly fond of the Abarth editions, which have picked up the nickname "Hellrat" (in homage to the new 707-hp "Hellcat" versions of the Dodge Charger and Challenger). The 500 Cabrio offers open-air runabout style without the hassle of putting down a full cloth top, and the 500e is an amazingly perky and sweet-handling electric car that"s regrettably unavailable to drivers outside California.

The pert, upright styling renders the 500 in simple, yet somehow characterful lines (and provides lots of chances for customization), making the Fiat 500 look like no other minicar. Its very small footprint and almost toy-like dimensions have already carved out an impression of the 500 for most Americans who"ve seen one. On the outside it manages to pull off short, tall hatchback proportions without looking awkward; and inside, it pulls off high style with relatively low-cost materials -- without necessarily looking it.

The Fiat 500 maxes out its interior space within its particularly small footprint, but the passenger package isn"t nearly as roomy as a Ford Fiesta, or even a MINI Cooper. Seats are well-formed, but they"re a bit on the short and firm side and we wish they didn"t push up so high, limiting headroom. For those who miss a real back seat, we recommend the 2015 Fiat 500L, which is covered by a different review. Perhaps confusingly, the 500L is almost entirely a different car, and actually built on a different platform.

The 500 is engaging to drive by almost any measure. Base cars get a 101-horsepower engine that"s not quite as peppy or perky as you"d expect in something with the 500"s design; but the Turbo models and their 135-hp engine are the ones that make good on the promises of the exterior. Above that, it"s the 160-horsepower Abarth that actually feels truly sporty, especially in the first three gears of this manual-transmission-only model. The Abarth also supplements that impression with an especially raucous exhaust note.

As you work up the power range, you also work up to more sporty visual cues and more firmly tuned suspensions. Even in the sporty Abarth, however, ride quality is quite good for a lightweight, short-wheelbase car. Throughout the lineup, you now have a choice between an automatic transmission or manual gearbox. Our driving time has exclusively been spent in manual versions, so far; but for 2015 the 500 Turbo, Abarth, and Abarth Cabrio models all gain the option of a six-speed automatic transmission.

For 2015, a new, 7-inch LCD display replaces the previous instrument cluster in every model except for the base Pop 500, where the display is optional. There are again three main variants: the 500, the 500C, and the 500 Abarth. Base 500 Pop models include a five-speed manual transmission, 15-inch wheels, air conditioning, a CD player and an auxiliary audio jack, power windows/locks/mirrors, and cruise control. With Sport models you get larger 16-inch wheels, a fixed glass roof, and a sport-tuned suspension and sport-bolstered seats. Fiat 500 Sport models revert to 15-inch wheels and hang on to the glass roof but add a six-speed automatic and rear park assist, along with satellite radio, premium speakers and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

The cheapest Fiat 500 in Australia now starts from $23,000 before on-road costs – up from $19,500 – after manual and convertible models were axed, and a price rise was applied.

The base model manual Fiat 500 Lounge hatch was until now the only Fiat priced below $20,000, at $19,550 plus on-road costs – leaving only two new-car brands in Australia with a vehicle under $20,000, Kia and MG (click here for more details).

While yet to be confirmed, the death of the Fiat 500C convertible is believed to be a result of ADR 85 side-impact crash safety regulations which came into force for older models late last year. Drive has contacted Fiat Australia for clarification.

As the range is trimmed back, the two remaining Fiat 500 variants – excluding the Abarth hot-hatch version, which too is now offered in hatch form only – have received $1550 price rises, now starting from $23,100 plus on-road costs.

Standard features otherwise carry over, including a 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, halogen headlights, power mirrors and windows, seven airbags, and rear parking sensors.

The Dolcevita adds a glass roof, 16-inch wheels, larger instrument display, automatic lights and wipers, automatic climate control, cruise control, "premium" seat trim, and more.

The 2022 Fiat 500 range – still believed to be designated as Model Year 2022 by Fiat Australia, despite 2023 being two months away – is on sale now. It will be joined in showrooms next year by a new-generation electric model (click herefor more details).

But let"s be honest, if you’re here it’s probably because you’ve already fallen in love with the retro looks of the Fiat 500. And we agree - the Fiat 500 is one of the best-looking city cars you can buy. Its compact and cute styling gives a heavy nod to past. However, while the 500 is undeniably one of the most attractive small cars on sale, it also has the tendency to be one of the most frustrating.

Most of the Fiat 500"s problems are caused by the fact it"s very small. The cabin is cramped, the seats narrow and the boot is barely large enough to cope with a weekly food shop. Technically the 500 is a four-seater, but only children will be able to make use of the rear seats.

Mid-spec versions of the 500 are advertised with a height adjustable driver’s seat, but the lever at the side only changes the angle of the seat rather than the height. The steering doesn’t have any reach adjustment either, which means short and tall people will find the 500 equally frustrating when trying to find a decent driving position.

The 500 isn"t particularly good to drive, either. The steering is light and accurate, but there isn’t a great feel of feedback via the wheel or pedals. This isn’t really a problem below 30mph, but take this small Fiat onto a twisty A road at 50mph and the overpowered steering makes it difficult to find any bond with the handling. The 500 is a safe and predictable car to drive (there"s plenty of grip) but there is very little fun to be had from this pint-sized Fiat.

The handling is further diminished by the soft suspension, which results in a bouncy and uncomfortable ride quality at low-speeds. Things do settle down when you venture past 50mph, but there’s lots of sideways travel in the suspension and this means even a moderate turn will cause the body of the 500 to roll heavily.

General equipment levels are fine. The entry-level Fiat 500 Pop gets a basic DAB radio and USB socket that lets you play music via a mobile device. We’d recommend spending extra on a Fiat 500 in Lounge spec, which adds a smart 7-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.

Most versions measure just 3.6 metres in length, which makes the 500 an easy thing to to live with in a town or city where space is limited. What’s more, at 1.7 metres wide, the 500 has little trouble cutting its way through heavy traffic or squeezing into a narrow parking space.

The Fiat 500 line is going all turbo all the time for 2018. Plus new performance brakes and suspension are standard on 500 Pop and Lounge. The 500L gets a facelift, and the 500L and 500X get infotainment system updates.

All Fiat 500s are getting the brand"s 1.4L MultiAir turbocharged engine as standard. That means a big jump in power for base model cars. That"s 34 hp more than last year, with the 1.4L offering 135 hp and 150 lb-ft of torque. The old non-turbo 1.4 with its lacklustre 101 hp is dropped. New 500 buyers will get a standard five-speed manual or the option of a six-speed automatic.

Pop and Lounge trim cars get 16-inch alloy wheels as standard, along with what Fiat calls a performance braking system and sport suspension. On the outside, they get body colour front and rear fascias along with new side skirts, spoiler, and fog lights. The changes apply to coupe and Cabrio models.

The larger five-seat 500L gets a revised exterior with new fascias front and rear along with bodyside moulding and wheels. The refreshed interior adds a new display cluster, improved center console, extra USB port and LED lighting. Uconnect 4 is standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto running on a 7.0-inch screen.
