Looking to take your project to the next level in terms of functionality and appearance? A custom LCD display might be the thing that gets you there, at least compared to the dot-matrix or seven-segment displays that anyone and their uncle can buy from the usual sources for pennies. But how does one create such a thing, and what are the costs involved? As is so often the case these days, it’s simpler and cheaper than you think, and [Dave Jones] has a great primer on designing and specifying custom LCDs.

We’re amazed at how low the barrier to entry into custom electronics has become, and even if you don’t need a custom LCD, at these prices it’s tempting to order one just because you can. Of course, you can also build your own LCD display completely from scratch too.

You"ve always wanted a bit more privacy with your monitor (porn jokes notwithstanding) and if you"re willing to tear apart a spare LCD monitor and a pair of 3D theater glasses (thanks, Dreamworks and Pixar!), you"ll get it. In lieu of a thicker tinfoil hat, Instructables" dimovi suggests removing the LCD"s frame, cutting out its polarized film with a utility knife before removing the screen"s film adhesive with a combination of cleaner and paint thinner and reassembling the monitor. Once complete, grab the glasses, cut out the lenses and combine them with the plastic film removed from the monitor before inserting them back into their frames. The result is an LCD monitor that displays a white screen to anyone not wearing the customized glasses, your actions being confidential, no matter what they might happen to be. A graphic LCD is typically required when the display of more than just text is required. Many of the LCD controllers on our graphic LCD displays also include a CGROM (character generator ROM) to be able to easily use characters as well as graphics. Some of our graphic LCD displays have the ability to render graphics in grayscale, enabling you to show images and elements of your UI (user interface) with more depth and definition.

We offer the largest selection and lowest prices for graphic STN/FSTN LCD displays in the United States. Whether you need one or one-thousand, Crystalfontz America has the graphic LCD for your product.

But what if a particular hack is able to transform your larger LCD screen into a privacy monitor? In other words, the screen"s contents are only visible to you after the hack, while those around you are left staring at a boring and blank white screen. Sounds cool?

The folks over at Instructables posted an article showing just that. Essentially, it provides a step-by-step guide on how you can create your very own privacy monitor with a few basic tools, such as an old pair of glasses, solvents, box cutters, paper towels and some super glue. Needless to say, an LCD display is needed as well. The trick lies in removing the anti-glare film from the LCD panel and using them as lenses instead. This polarizing material actually filters out the backlight and shows the viewer what"s onscreen.

Funnily enough, the amount of contributors actually isn"t relevant to chances of a project winning anything in Hackaday Prize, most projects I"ve seen win are one-man efforts. I"ve participated in previous Hackaday Prize challenges, and I"m pretty realistic about it - I"ve submitted this project to Hackaday Prize "displays" round, but nothing I do here is really "in the spirit" of projects that change the world, are commercializable easily or could benefit from a Design Lab residence. This page, realistically, has 0 chances of getting anywhere further than this round"s final (which is a $500 prize), and even this chance is pretty slim, considering that, IIRC last time I checked, there"s already 10 decent applications.

To put it explicitly, I"m treating this HaD prize round as more of "deadline for me to dump my brain and do as much research on laptop display stuff as possible + unlikely but plausible monetary reward for me to fund my crippling addiction to reusing laptop parts". Plus, there"s the "positive coverage" part of that, which I"ve learned to be one of the most important parts - actually letting people know that this is a thing will seriously impact usefulness of what I make. After over a year of working with laptop displays specifically (and multiple years of hoping I get to do that someday), I can"t help but feel like - now I owe it to people to tell every single thing I"ve learned. And, to be as frank and transparent as possible, the main competition here is between my lack of ability to finish projects I start and my desire to share what I"ve learned, as well as the desired ego boost of "I am doing a thing that people do really need" =)

One thing I do hope to be able to do, however, is eventually selling "making your display work" kits on Tindie which would cover usecases that Chinese sellers don"t cover. For instance, eDP displays from laptops can easily be adapted to full-size DisplayPort with a small PCB that"d connect to commonly available eDP-FPC cables with standardized pinout, providing both a DisplayPort input and a small circuit generating EN+ADJ signals for the panel"s builtin LED driver. Nobody is currently making these boards, but there"s a market for them, and I will be making them. And I"ll be linking to product pages for these boards from this project page, for sure - but that"s not the end goal, it"s merely "I can do this and it nets some extra income to fund my research" thing, especially given these boards will certainly be OSHW.

Most LCD monitors have two films on the glass - a polarized one to filter out the light you are not supposed to see, and a frosted anti-glare film. The anti-glare film we don"t need, the polarized one we do - it is used for the glasses.

Print a full screenshot of the spreadsheet and taskbar onto a piece of thin, clear plastic. Convince people you can only see well with black and white, so you can make it a real high contrast print. But make sure any lines are thin. Apply this to the LCD, taking care to remove bubbles. Tehn jsut get uesd to seneig waht it looks lkie knid of srecwed up. The brain is amazing at adapting, and there is a good chance you read the last sentence naturally. Look again ^^.0

The main screen is absolutely gorgeous, a 176x220 pixel TFT LCD screen with 262k colors. It"s a beauty and there"s three skins included to choose from (Moto, Scarlet, and Silver) of which I"m partial to Silver. It"s the most "business" like color and isn"t overly colorful like the others. The front cover LCD looks good and also doubles as the self-portrait LCD (no look at the silver reflection here) after you turn on the camera and close the lid. Look, there"s Yoda, my Yorkshire Terrier, posing for my wallpaper.

The keypad buttons have a tactile feel to them, I"ve found them to have a slight sticky feel to them even after cleaning. While the buttons are flat and do not stick up from the keypad, you can push them in and get a good responsive feel. I found the buttons on the top lid (on the side of the phone) to be a bit of a reach, as you have to move your thumb quite a bit to press those buttons on the left. The top left button on the lid is for Voice Records, the button below that is for Volume (up and down). The button on the right of the LCD is for Voice Name dialing, which is in an easy position to press. Since the keypad lights up blue, it"s easy to dial and use the phone at night or in the dark.

I find the Cingular branding to be obnoxious. There"s the cingular logo (at least it"s in white and not over the top) on the back of the phone, and when the phone is in use, the bright orange Cingular logo shows up on the top cover LCD until you close the phone. It"s one thing to have the LCD display the cellular network you are on, but the orange logo turns you into an easily seen walking billboard for them. I"d definitely be interested in learning how to hack the phone to remove or change this picture.

Yes, even this chic phone isn"t flawless. The front cover does not sit flush with the bottom of the phone. I"m not sure if it"s just my phone, but when closed, the cover sticks up about 1 or 2mm and isn"t smooth when running your fingers up and down. When I push the cover down as much as I can, the cover will sit flush, so it may just be my particular phone (I have yet to see the phone in person at a Cingular store). There also seems like there are some imprints on the LCD screen of the keypad graphics. I don"t think the LCD has been scratched at all, but it is something to watch out for in the long run.

Ideally, I"d like the top cover LCD to always be on so that a thumbnail of my wallpaper and the time would always be bright, but I couldn"t find anything in the options menus to do so. It would also probably be a battery drain, but it"d be nice if I could choose to have that. As it is now, the

LCD backlight turns off 10 seconds after the lid is closed. After the cover is closed, the top LCD shows the current time and wallpaper. But without the backlight on, it"s rather hard to see the top LCD without some light shining on it. In a completely dark room, there"s no way to see the time without flipping the cover open. As I use my phone quite a bit to check the time (no watches for me), I would like to easily see the time without having to fumble with it.

Samsung Display will stop producing LCD panels by the end of the year. The display maker currently runs two LCD production lines in South Korea and two in China, according to Reuters. Samsung tells The Verge that the decision will accelerate the company’s move towards quantum dot displays, while ZDNetreports that its future quantum dot TVs will use OLED rather than LCD panels.

The decision comes as LCD panel prices are said to be falling worldwide. Last year, Nikkei reported that Chinese competitors are ramping up production of LCD screens, even as demand for TVs weakens globally. Samsung Display isn’t the only manufacturer to have closed down LCD production lines. LG Display announced it would be ending LCD production in South Korea by the end of the 2020 as well.

Last October Samsung Display announced a five-year 13.1 trillion won (around $10.7 billion) investment in quantum dot technology for its upcoming TVs, as it shifts production away from LCDs. However, Samsung’s existing quantum dot or QLED TVs still use LCD panels behind their quantum dot layer. Samsung is also working on developing self-emissive quantum-dot diodes, which would remove the need for a separate layer.

Although Samsung Display says that it will be able to continue supplying its existing LCD orders through the end of the year, there are questions about what Samsung Electronics, the largest TV manufacturer in the world, will use in its LCD TVs going forward. Samsung told The Vergethat it does not expect the shutdown to affect its LCD-based QLED TV lineup. So for the near-term, nothing changes.

One alternative is that Samsung buys its LCD panels from suppliers like TCL-owned CSOT and AUO, which already supply panels for Samsung TVs. Last year The Elec reported that Samsung could close all its South Korean LCD production lines, and make up the difference with panels bought from Chinese manufacturers like CSOT, which Samsung Display has invested in.

The CLCD was developed in late 1984 and first presented to the public at the January 1985 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. Following the break-up of the Plus/4 project teams, a number of personnel worked on minor projects that could be developed further. One of these was implementing an LCD screen. Commodore Semiconductor Group (CSG) had an optoelectronics division (at 4350 Beltwood Parkway South, Dallas, Texas, 75234) where research and manufacturing for LCD digital watches took place. In fact, this was the only LCD glass manufacturing company in the USA at that time. Along with portability, there was the intent to include a modem.

It is believed that Commodore’s CEO, Marshall Smith, spoke with the CEO of Tandy about the future of LCD products. When Smith was told that LCD would be going nowhere, he cancelled the project. With no need then for LCD technology, and no real calculator or watch production going on at Commodore, Smith sold-off the entire LCD division. There are rumoured to be 5 machines in existence, however only 2 are verifiable.

Bil Herd worked on the initial architecture for the CLCD project and also designed the unimplemented MMU, before being moved to the team developing the C128. Jeff Porter, a self-confessed C64 hacker, from AT&T was the modem expert and became leader of the project team when Herd was moved. Ian Kirschman was a lead on the project. Hedley Davis, Judy Braddick, Andy Finkle, and Carolyn Scheppner were coders.

The CLCD was to be "a utilitarian computer for those of you who need a small, light, portable computer for use on the road, in the classroom, or simply in a remote room in your house"

Although there was no external video output, Jeff Porter stated that "his team was thinking about a cartridge for the C=LCD which provided 80 column display for an external video display, using the C128"s video chip"

To add to all this, the device features a 5.5-inch IPS LCD panel with a resolution QHD+, with the Snapdragon 810 chip and a 23.8-megapixel rear sensor to take images. But, unfortunately, the price for the same is an exorbitant $13,500 (Rs. 9,90,000 approx).
