Video walls deliver the wow factor and imbue commercial office space with that modern look associated with cutting-edge companies. Video walls display content in a way that is unique and captures the attention of target audiences.

However, the high cost (or at least the perception of a high cost), typically associated with such display technology has prevented many businesses from building their dream video wall.

You can absolutely still create such displays on a budget without breaking the bank, though. This article will provide you with a general overview of what a video wall for a commercial enterprise might cost, from a very simple video wall to a much more elaborate setup. This will help you narrow down the size, style, and price range that fits your needs and budget.

The overall costs of a video wall depend largely on size, processor, type of display technology and quality of video mounts, as well as ancillary costs like installation, making video walls one of the most customizable pieces of technology you can install.

Now, one more note before I start breaking down options and prices. When I talk about video walls, I’m not referring to buying four TVs from a big box store and hanging them together. TVs are problematic as video walls for a number of reasons. Their bezels are usually larger and have logos, they’re usually not bright enough to serve as commercial displays, and they can’t meet the demand of 24/7 usage. You’ll hear me discuss LCDs and LEDs, but when I do, I’ll be referring to monitors, not TVs. It’s an important distinction.

While blended front projections and rear projection cubes are viable options for video walls, LED and LCDs are the most common display technology used for video walls.

When viewed from a distance, LED displays deliver a large seamless image presentation that’s ideal for stage presentation screens, corporate branding, and digital signage use cases. Using the correct pixel pitch makes LED display deliver a picture-perfect image that’s free of bezels or lines; however, they are not great for close viewing, though that is improving.

For simple video walls, a basic 2×2 high-quality LCD unit can cost as little as $4800, while larger, more elaborate setups with more advanced features (touchscreen capabilities) can go as high as $30,000.

You also need to consider the cost of mounting hardware and installation. A 2×2 mounting kit costs around $650, freestanding mounting kits go for $2,500 while complex sliding rails for very large displays can cost as much as $100,000. There are cost-effective options for enterprises on a budget as well as elaborate setups for companies who want to pull out all the stops.

A 1.2mm pixel pitch LED video wall costs approximately $2K sq./ft. This figure translates into $200K for a video wall with 160” x 90” outside dimensions. This includes the mounts, panels and installation costs without taking into account the cost of infrastructure, installation and programming and other ancillary costs (like tax and shipping).

There is also a new motorized video wall mount that allows monitors to be serviced without even touching them. I’ll discuss this more in a future post.

Video processors handle video rotation, layering, or windowing of content and other custom effects. Depending on the content to be displayed and how it will be displayed, video processors can easily become the most expensive component of the video wall. The cost depends largely on the number of simultaneous layers displayed on the wall at a given time and the number of physical inputs and outputs required. Processors can range from $15k to $80K, depending on complexity.

For very simple video walls, you can purchase processors that cost far less. However, you should always go for good quality processors since low-quality ones may produce slow videos that will ruin the effect of your displays.

Now, some video wall monitors actually have tiling built in, so basic functionality already exists within the displays themselves. So if what you are displaying is very simple and straightforward, you may not even need a processor.

Also, custom content needs to be created (or scaled to fit) for video walls that don’t come in standard resolutions like 1080P, 2K,4K, etc. You might want to avoid such non-standard walls since it can be quite expensive to create such custom content. Instead, try to use a video wall layout that maintains standard aspect ratios. For LED walls, this means a 16:10, 16:9, or other cinema aspect ratios while LCD arrays should come in 2×2, 3×3, 4×4, and other standard array sizes.

With the wide range in prices of video wall components, processors, mounts and other ancillary fees, companies can afford to build a video wall, no matter their budget constraints. While DIY installation costs can help reduce costs, it isn’t advisable. You should always look for reliable, high-quality vendors and installation experts to help you create the ideal video wall for your business.

The Dell P3421W is a great ultrawide monitor for browsing the web, coding, and doing general office work. It has useful features such as a USB hub, a sturdy stand with some cable management, and a USB-C port that can charge a laptop with up to 65 W of power. The display has good contrast and is reasonably color-accurate, but professionals who need precise color reproduction would need to calibrate the monitor or consider the more-accurate Asus ROG Strix XG349C. The P3421W was also the least fussy to set up among the ultrawides in our testing. The on-screen menu is easy to navigate, and it’s the only ultrawide monitor we recommend that allows you to easily swap your keyboard, mouse, and video between two computers with a built-in KVM switch.

The P3421W has a 34-inch display with a slight curve and a sharp 3440×1440 resolution, so its images look noticeably more detailed than those of standard high-definition 1080p displays. It’s wide enough to fit three documents, spreadsheets, or code-editor windows side by side, and the display’s unobtrusive curve isn’t distracting. The curve—described as 3800R if you’re comparing specifications—is one of the most shallow curves on the monitors we tested, so at first glance you might think the display is flat. But the subtle curve slightly angles the display’s corners toward you, making them seem less distant than on flat ultrawides like the Sceptre E345B-QUT168.

You can connect the P3421W to computers in a few different ways since it has so many kinds of ports. The simplest connection for laptops uses a single USB-C cable, which charges the laptop and sends its video to the monitor. You can also plug your keyboard and mouse directly into any of the monitor’s four USB-A ports, and those signals move through USB-C to the laptop. If your computer lacks a USB-C port, you have the option of HDMI or DisplayPort for video, and you’ll need an additional USB cable to connect the four USB-A ports to the computer.

If you connect both a laptop and a desktop at the same time, you can plug your keyboard and mouse into the monitor, and it will automatically connect them to the computer you’re currently displaying on the screen. This built-in KVM (keyboard, video, mouse) switch is a nice feature that’s uncommon in monitors of this price.

Many of the ultrawide monitors we tested had wobbly stands, but the Dell P3421W was one of the sturdiest. Its heavy metal base and rigid stand solidly anchor the display on a desk. The stand allows you to raise and lower the monitor, tilt it up and down, and rotate it slightly left or right. There’s also a hole in the stand for cable management, so you can neatly route the wires that hang down from the back of the display behind your desk. If you don’t want to use the included stand, the display itself uses the VESA mounting standard, and you can attach it to any monitor arm capable of supporting its 15-pound weight.

Generally we don’t recommend ultrawides for photo or video work since the display’s curve distorts straight lines. But if you need a color-accurate display, and if you choose the P3421W, you would want to calibrate it before using it for any crucial color work. In our color-accuracy tests, the monitor produced DeltaE 2000 scores from 2.4 to 3.5, meaning color inaccuracies would be visible if you were to compare its colors with a reference image. For daily usage, however, most people would never be able to tell the difference.

Dell’s display warranty ranks among the best in the industry. The P3421W comes with a three-year warranty and the promise that if you find any defects that cause a pixel to stay bright, Dell will replace the display. This guarantee also covers six or more dark pixels.

If you use your display in direct sunlight, this monitor might not be bright enough for you. We measured the peak brightness of the Dell P3421W at 284 nits, a bit lower than we’d like. Other displays measured at more than 300 nits, and the Asus XG349C (our also-great pick) measured at more than 400. However, during our testing indoors with indirect sunlight, we never thought this monitor was lacking in brightness.

A video wall (also known as display wall) is a large visualization surface consisting of multiple displays. Originally, they consisted of multiple televisions or monitors that were put closely together. The objective was to make it seem as one large display surface. The problem however was the large frame (or bezel) that surrounded the useful display surface of each television. This completely tore down the effect of a single canvas and ruined the visual performance. Therefore, new technologies were introduced to minimize the ‘dead pixel space’ between the different displays. Today’s display wall solutions are generally using tiled LCD panels, rear-projection cubes, or direct LED tiles.

These display walls are available in a wide range of sizes, typically with a screen diameter between 46” and 80”. The choice of the screen size depends on the typical content and the viewing distance. If watched from up close, the pixel density should be high enough to not see the individual pixels. The resolution is subject to the wall size. For example, a 4K video wall requires 4 Full HD screens in a 2 x 2 setup.

An LCD video wall consists of multiple specifically designed LCD displays. Contrary to the panels used in television sets, these LCD displays have a very narrow bezel. This minimizes the gap between the panels, making it look like one big canvas. Over the years, this gap has gradually decreased. Today, Barco UniSee has the smallest gap in the industry.

LCD video walls are designed for long term and intensive use, often playing in a 24/7 mode — which means they are rarely switched off. Specific measures to prevent burn-in effects are applied to allow them to play for many years, in optimal conditions.

The traditional benefits of LCD video wall solutions include the high brightness, good image quality, and relatively low cost. Also the limited real estate space needed is a plus. The disadvantages are the risk for burn-in and the lower lifetime. Recent models however have successfully reduced these drawbacks.

Typical markets for LCD display walls include meeting and crisis rooms, lobbies, and experience centers. You can also find them in the control rooms of traffic and security centers.

Direct-view LED technology is used to create the most impressive video walls. They are very bright and are often not only used to inform or to collaborate, but also to wow audiences. For example in retail & advertisement settings, during spectacles or live performances, LED video walls are used. Due to recent price-drops for LED video walls, they have become in reach of most corporations, to use in control rooms or corporate lobbies. The LED display tiles consist of many individual color LEDs. The pixel pitch can be quite large when they are watched from afar (for live performances for example), or very small (for control rooms or lobbies.

The high brightness, absence of inter-tile gaps and impressive colors are the main benefits of direct-view LED technology. Also the limited depth and weight can be important in certain settings.

Using projection instead of LCD or direct-view LED technology, rear-projection video walls target different applications. They are mainly used in control rooms that operate in a 24/7 mode. Utilities providers, for example, generally rely on rear-projection technology to monitor their network.

A rear-projection video wall consists of multiple cubes, which feature a projector and a screen. The projectors are positioned upwards. A mirror under a 45° angle then reflects the image and casts it onto the projection screen. In this way, the required depth is cut dramatically. For example, Barco’s OverView ODLF series only requires a depth of 60 cm/23.6”. This advanced video wall can also be serviced from the front, so there is no need for a rear maintenance area.

The cost is a main contributor to the selection of your video wall solution. Many factors need to be taken into account when calculating the cost of your video wall. Here are the main ones:

Technology: There are 3 main video wall technologies (described above), all with their specific benefits AND price tag. Historically, ultra narrow bezel LCD is the most economic option, followed by rear-projection cubes and direct-view LED displays. Price erosion on narrow pixel pitch LED video walls in recent years has brought this technology within reach of all corporations, so that new markets (including control rooms, corporate lobbies, television studios, etc.) can also benefit from LED.

Size: The cool thing about video walls is that they are modular, so they really take the size and aspect ratio you want. But it should be no surprise that large video walls cost more than small ones. Not only the price of the panels raises the costs: large video walls also need more driving controllers and processing power to handle the high resolution. This is a significant extra cost that should not be overlooked!

Support: The more panels, the heavier the video wall system becomes. This poses additional requirements on the supporting infrastructure. The heaviest load for rear-projection walls is on the floor, which is only rarely an issue. For LED walls and LCD video walls, on the other hand, it is the supporting wall that catches the full load. It may need some additional support to handle the pressure.

Total cost of ownership (TCO): The initial investment is of course the most visible cost, but don"t forget to calculate the operating costs as well. This includes the cost for electricity and consumables (like cooling fans and color wheels). Since the release of the Atomos Ninja V back in 2018, it has become pretty much the industry standard in monitor recorders. It"s a popular choice among both budding and professional videographers and filmmakers thanks to its beautifully calibrated 5-inch HDR display and its ability to support 4K 60p ProRes HQ, H.265, 4:2:2 ad DNxHR.
