Generational refresh. After only a year with the older Alienware m17 R2, R3, and R4 design, Dell is ready to hit the reset button with the Alienware x17 R1. Does the full-on makeover address all the issues we had with the previous generation model?

The 17.3-inch Alienware laptop series has had an avalanche of changes these past few years. Dell introduced a brand new Alienware m17 R1 chassis in 2019 only to replace it with a fully redesigned m17 R2 chassis just a year later in 2020. For 2021, the manufacturer has introduced yet another full chassis redesign to replace the m17 series altogether called the Alienware x17.

Our test unit is a higher-end configuration equipped with the Core i7-11800H CPU, GeForce RTX 3080 GPU, 120 Hz 4K UHD display, CherryMX mechanical keys, and 32 GB of RAM for approximately $3200 USD. Lesser and higher options are available with the RTX 3060 or Core i9-11980HK, respectively. Perhaps the most important feature of the new chassis is its redesigned cooling solution that includes more fans than before and a new gallium-silicone-based thermal paste over the CPU. A 15.6-inch version is also available called the Alienware x15 R1.

Competitors to the Alienware x17 R1 include other ultra-thin 17.3-inch gaming laptops like the MSI GS76, Razer Blade 17, Asus ROG Zephyrus S17, and the Tongfang-based Maingear Vector Pro.

The lid flexes more than the lid on the Blade 17 but not as much as on the MSI GS75. It also has some of the thickest bezels along the bottom edge for any 17.3-inch gaming laptop we"ve seen which are partly responsible for the extra-large footprint.

Alienware laptops aren"t afraid to be big and the x17 R1 is still a big system regardless of how "thin" Dell likes to market the model. The truth is that the system is noticeably bigger and heavier than most competing models like the MSI GS76, Blade 17, or Zephyrus S17. Even the older Alienware m17 R4 is lighter than the x17 R1 by about 200 grams despite their nearly identical volumes. The added weight contributes to a stronger and stiffer base, however.

Port options are mostly the same as on last year"s Alienware m17 R4 but with a few important changes. The rarely used proprietary Graphics Amplifier port, for example, has been dropped in favor of a more handy second USB-C port. There is also one less USB-A port to work with this time around. Otherwise, all other ports have returned albeit rearranged along the rear of the chassis to be generally harder to reach and see than on most other laptops.

The Wi-Fi 6E-enabled Killer AX1675x module comes soldered much like how it was on the last generation m17 design. Interestingly, the WLAN module is removable on the Alienware x15 even though it"s a smaller 15.6-inch form factor.

The bottom panel pops off easily with just a Philips screwdriver and sharp edge. RAM is now expandable via 2x SODIMM slots whereas they are soldered on the older m17 R2 design.

Introducedon last year"s Alienware m17 R4, the ultra-low profile CherryMX mechanical keys have returned on the x17 R1 as an optional feature. We were initially hesitant about the keys since mechanical or optical switches have been mostly misses on laptops like the MSI GT80 Titan, 2019 Razer Blade 15, or Lenovo Legion Y920. These new CherryMX keys, however, are quickly becoming our favorite on any gaming laptop. Feedback is uniform, crisper, and with both deeper travel and a more satisfying click when compared to laptops like the Razer Blade 17 or MSI GS76. The per-key RGB keys work well for both word processing and gaming albeit at the cost of loud high-pitched clatter that roommates or classmates may not appreciate. In these scenarios, we recommend opting for the SKUs with traditional membrane-based switches instead.

Dell offers an RGB backlight for the clickpad on certain SKUs which is a returning superficial option from older Alienware laptops. This feature is not available on the smaller 15.6-inch Alienware x15 R1.

While the AU Optronics B173ZAN panel can be found on other laptops like the Schenker XMG Ultra 17, the one on our Alienware has a native refresh rate of 120 Hz instead of 60 Hz. Furthermore, black-white and gray-gray response times are very fast in the one-digit ranges and maximum brightness is also noticeably brighter than on most other gaming laptops. The MSI GS76 carries a similar 4K panel with even faster response times than our Alienware albeit at the cost of a narrower gamut. This makes the Alienware display one of the very few we"ve seen that seemingly checks all the boxes in regards to refresh rate, resolution, response times, color coverage, and brightness.

The matte overlay is slightly grainier than a glossy alternative and backlight bleeding could have been better on our specific unit. Our measurements below reflect only the 4K 120 Hz panel and not any of the other display options available for the Alienware x17 which are expected to have different attributes.

Color space encompasses all of sRGB and AdobeRGB as advertised by the manufacturer while DCI-P3 coverage is approximately 88 percent. The deep colors, fast response times, and fast refresh rate all make this 4K panel suitable for both gaming and graphics editing.

ℹDisplay response times show how fast the screen is able to change from one color to the next. Slow response times can lead to afterimages and can cause moving objects to appear blurry (ghosting). Outdoor visibility is slightly better than on many other 17.3-inch gaming laptops since the 400-nit matte display is brighter than the typical 300-nit target. The heavy weight and size are difficult to ignore, however, and so you"ll likely want to work on a flat desk regardless of the environment.

Our system was set to High Performance mode via the Alienware Command Center software prior to running our benchmarks below for the highest possible scores. We recommend users become familiar with this software as all lighting and performance features are found here. Additionally, users can set the system to Optimus or discrete GPU mode via the BIOS.

CPU performance is outstanding with CineBench xT scores that are up to 20 percent faster than the average laptop in our database with the same Core i7-11800H CPU. In fact, the Alienware x17 is one of the fastest laptops you can get in the market with this specific processor. The faster-than-expected performance of our system actually puts it slightly ahead of the Ryzen 9 5900HX or Core i9-11900K in multi-threaded loads even though the i7-11800H is generally behind on most other laptops.

The high CPU performance of the Alienware can be attributed to the very high PL1 and PL2 targets of 165 W each (with a real-world sustainability of 98 W to 108 W) compared to 65 W and 90 W, respectively, on other laptops like the Razer Blade 17. The system is also excellent at maintaining high Turbo Boost clock rates over extended periods as shown by our CineBench R15 xT loop test below. Such lofty performance results don"t come free, however, as our Stress Test and Power Consumption sections below will show.

Despite the 165 W RTX 3080 graphics, raw performance is only 2 to 9 percent faster than the average RTX 3080 laptop in our database likely due to diminishing returns at higher TGP targets. The minor advantage can also be seen when running games as frame rates are again only a few percentage points higher on average. However, the performance difference becomes more pronounced when compared to the 90 W RTX 3080 in the MSI GS76 where our Alienware can be roughly 15 to 30 percent faster in certain titles. A desktop PC with RTX 3080 graphics will still outperform any RTX 3080 laptop by about 40 to 45 percent.

Idling on Witcher 3 for over an hour shows stable frame rates with no random drops to suggest no interrupting background activity when gaming in contrast to what we observed on some older Alienware m15 models.

Fan noise is highly dependent on the Alienware Command Center settings (Quiet, Performance, and Full Speed). Despite having two times more fans than on most other gaming laptops, the Alienware x17 is generally very quiet during low loads like browsing or video streaming even when set to Performance mode. We"re able to record a fan noise of just 31.3 dB(A) against a background of 24.9 dB(A) when running 3DMark 06 for 90 seconds. Any longer, however, and fan noise would eventually rise to 43.8 dB(A) which is similar to what we"ve recorded on other gaming laptops.

Running Witcher 3 on Performance mode would result in a steady fan noise of 49.7 dB(A). Interestingly, this level would remain the same even when on Balanced mode and so gamers should set the system to Performance mode whenever possible. Setting the fans to Full Speed mode will increase fan noise to as high as 55 dB(A) no matter the onscreen load. The Alienware x17 is generally quieter than the Gigabyte Aero 17 or last generation m17 R4 during low loads, but they almost about the same once higher loads are introduced.

Overall temperatures are actually cooler than what we observed on the Asus Zephyrus S17 likely due to the thicker and larger size of our Alienware chassis.

Running Witcher 3 on High Performance mode causes the CPU and GPU to stabilize at 3.5 GHz and 1785 MHz, respectively, with a steady GPU board power draw of around 145 W. If on Balanced mode, CPU clock rates would drop to just 2.5 GHz while GPU clock rates may dip slightly to 1680 MHz and a power draw of ~135 W. If you"re gaming and want the most of your laptop, then be sure to enable High performance mode via the Alienware software. GPU clock rates are faster than expected either way when compared to most other laptops with the same GPU like the Maingear Vector Pro.

Power consumption when gaming remains higher than usual much like what we discovered on the m17 series. Running Witcher 3 would consume an average of 249 W compared to only 195 W or 156 W on the Asus ROG Zephyrus S17 or MSI GS76, respectively. The higher CPU TDP and GPU TGP targets of the Alienware system are likely responsible for its higher power demands.

The most compelling features of the Alienware x17 are its processor performance and CherryMX mechanical keys. The Core i7-11800H CPU here runs noticeably faster than on other laptops equipped with the exact same chip while the clicky mechanical keys are some of the most comfortable we"ve used on any gaming laptop.Dell"s Alienware x17 isn"t afraid to maximize performance even if it means being slightly bigger and heavier than the rest.

All that performance comes at the cost of core temperature, power consumption, size, and weight as alternative models like the Razer Blade 17, MSI GS76 Stealth, or Asus ROG Zephyrus S17 are all smaller, lighter, and more power efficient while offering similar Intel and Nvidia options. These systems tend to run a bit slower, however, and so it"ll be up to users to balance performance with their personal portability preferences. If you"re content with RTX 3060-level performance, then the lighter Razer or MSI may be the better option while RTX 3080 performance hunters can squeeze out much more from the Alienware x17 and its comparatively larger cooling system.

Different configurations of the Alienware x17 R1 are now available at Best Buy and Neweggstarting at $2399 USD at the time of writing. Alternatively, users can order directly from Dell who will naturally have more SKUs and options.

(Pocket-lint) - The Alienware X17 R1 is, in traditional Alienware fashion, a real looker. It"s part of the brand"s X-Series range - notebooks which the company likes to call "gaming masterpieces".

It"s among the thinnest gaming machines ever produced, some five per cent thinner than even the M17 R4 - and that was already a svelte gaming laptop. It"s also enhanced with Alienware"s exclusive thermal cooling material, Element 31, along with a number of other attractive specifications.

All told the Alienware X17 R1 is a great gaming package. There"s plenty on offer here, including great specification and visual design, in a slim-yet-powerful package that does little wrong.

There"s no denying that the Alienware X17 R1 is a visually striking laptop. Having taken it out of the box, even before turning it on, that much is clear. That"s thanks to the tried and trusted Alienware design aesthetic. This model sports the "Lunar Light" off-white finish that we"ve seen and loved on previous Alienware laptops.

It"s noticeably thin, too, but not especially lightweight - and that"s because of all the tech that"s bristling under the hood. But also because it sports a 17.3-inch screen that"s frankly much more immersive than lesser 15-inch laptops don.

One odd and somewhat frustrating aspect of this laptop"s design is the port placement. Alienware has designed the X17 R1 with its connectivity around the rear of the machine. So if you want to plug in a mouse, headset, external display or indeed anything else, then you need to get to the back of the laptop.

Not got a big separate monitor? No problem. The quality of the Alienware"s display is really quite something. The model reviewed here sports a 4K panel, but there are other options with faster refresh rates at lower Full HD resolution.

The X17 R1 comes with a few different screen options, as outlined above. On review here is the 4K/UHD panel. It"s crisp, wonderfully colour rich, and generally easy on the eyes. We found various games looked fantastic on this screen.

Rainbow Six Siege, maxed out, achieves around 60-70fps. It looks great in 4K, of course, but you"d get a higher and more consistent frame count with a Full HD panel and lower resolution settings - you"d need that to make the most of the 120Hz refresh rate.

If you want to get a bit more hands-on, then you can fire up Alienware Command Center and access various overclocking options. This software lets you select from several overclocking profiles or tweak them manually to your preference. You can also tweak fan curves in here too. So it"s a nice balance of automated optimisation and manual overclocking controls.

Alas, as with all the thin-and-compact gaming laptops we"ve tested, the battery life is on this Alienware laptop is one place it falls down. We found we just got a few hours of use out of it before it needed plugging in.

The Alienware X17 R1 packs a compact, low-profile keyboard with Cherry MX switches. This means all the goodness you"d expect from a gaming keyboard, with N-key rollover technology, anti-ghosting, and either four-zone or per-key RGB illumination too.

The trackpad"s lighting is one of several lighting accents that this laptop rocks. Other zones include the lighting bar around the rear cooling vents, the Alienware logo, and of course the keyboard.

Oddly enough, my number 1 choice isn’t even the laptop I chose for my own 3d modeling and rendering work. The reason will be very obvious in a moment, but let me just say this: the Dell XPS 15 offers the best bang for the buck in terms of price vs performance.

The 15 inch screen (with 4K resolution) is arguably the best in its class. Having a great screen is extremely important when it comes to 3d modeling, as you need all the detail you can get when it comes to working with intricate wireframes and meshes.

Oh, and yeah: the specs are pretty good too. Even the base version of this machine will be able to run Maya / 3D Studio Max / Blender with ease, you might want to spend more for a more powerful video card for complex rendering and animation. In terms of the modeling alone, this machine can handle it all. With ease.

I’m of the opinion that the best laptop for 3d modeling could very well be a gaming laptop. I mean, why not? Gaming laptops are extremely powerful devices built for long hours of use under very high loads.

As a long time 3d modeler myself, I can tell you that spending all day in front of my computer trying to figure out a complex mesh is more common than I’d like to admit. As a matter fact, I’d be embarrassed to tell you how long I spent building my Lamborghini Huracan 3d model.

As I already mentioned, a gaming machine built to handle complex graphics is the way to go when it comes to working in 3d. Especially if you’re doing animation! In terms of this specific Alienware laptop:

It’s all about the screen. Gamers demand the best visuals possible, and this laptop delivers. With 4K resolution (and a 300Hz 3ms refresh rate), it’ll be more than enough to handle your 3d models.

The specs are really good. Especially when it comes to video memory. One of the things that I’ve learned as a 3d modeler is that you can never have enough video memory. Real-time rendering and high-resolution previews will bring most computers to its knees, but not this one. It’ll real-time render the highest poly-count model you can throw at it. With ease.

This is it. This is the laptop that I chose to be my primary device for 3d modeling and rendering in Maya. So far, I couldn’t be happier with my choice – even though my particular machine is several years old now and somewhat out of date (it’s a late 2019 Intel model).

Although I don’t think that the 16″ MacBook Pro one of the best laptops for artists (it’s a bit overkill for that IMHO), it should absolutely not be overlooked for 3d illustrators and designers as well. Here’s why:

Three words: 16. Inch. Screen. I am fairly confident that there isn’t a 3d modeler out there who would disagree with me about screen size being important. There are fewer things more frustrating in life than having to do fine detail work (in a polygon mesh or nurbs) on a small screen. It’s infuriating. Thankfully, the 16″ MacBook Pro has a large high-resolution screen which prevents any frustrations.

It’s extremely durable. I use my 16″ MacBook Pro for up to 10 hours a day / 6 days a week as my primary device. I’ve got it attached to an external display, and I am doing 3d modeling and rendering on (in Maya and Form Z) a near daily basis. It doesn’t skip a beat, and I’ve never had any issues with it. No crashes, no overheating, and no complaints.

It’s not going to work for 3D Studio Max users (which only runs on Windows). Yes, you could put a virtual Windows environment on your Mac using Parallels, but you’ll sacrifice both convenience and performance doing that. However, I will say that the 16″ MacBook Pro is perfect for Maya and Blender. Even Form Z, which is one of my favorite 3d modeling software packages of all time. It’s totally underrated.

Ok. Stop laughing! Those of you who are paying attention will know that the Acer Aspire 5 was included in my list of the best laptops for artists as well. Because of how much laptop of it is for the price, I just couldn’t resist bringing back as one of the best laptops for 3d modeling and rendering as well.

No, it’s not as powerful (or good looking – or well-built) as some of the other laptops in this list, but it’ll get you started in the world of 3d if you’re on a tight budget.

To be honest, I wouldn’t recommend the Aspire 5 as a really good laptop for doing 3d modeling and rendering. However, I’ve included it in this list because:

The base-level specs are more than good enough to run the latest versions of your favorite 3d modeling software. Acer may not be known for being the best in terms of build quality and styling, but they do offer a heck of a lot of computer for relatively little money. For the record, I’ve used both 3D Studio Max and Blender on computers with lesser specs than this. And you know what? It worked fine for basic 3d modeling.

Although I don’t see any issues with the Aspire 5 being able to handle basic 3d wireframe and polygon mesh creation, it may struggle a bit when it comes to real-time rendering and animation.

There have been a lot of interesting developments in the world of laptop computing recently, and the Microsoft Surface is leading the charge. Although this isn’t typically a laptop that most people consider when doing 3d work, I could see myself being very happy with one of these devices if being mobile (working from anywhere) was important to me.

There’s a lot to like about the Microsoft Surface 8. They look great. They perform great. Not only that, they’re extremely lightweight and highly portable. In terms of what makes  them good laptops for 3d modeling and rendering:

The touchscreen is a game changer. Maybe not so much when actually building 3d models, but more so for presenting your work to a client. Being able to let your client manipulate the model in a 3d space using their fingers is a really powerful sales tool.

I’ve always craved a certain amount of portability in my life, and having to tie myself down with a big desktop computer to do 3d modeling was incredibly frustrating. Thank goodness that things have gotten better as I’ve grown older. Here are some frequently asked questions about choosing the best laptop for 3d modeling:

These days, yes. It is! All the laptops in this list are more than capable of running the latest 3d modeling software. I use my 16″ MacBook Pro very hard, and it doesn’t skip a beat in either Maya, Blender, or Form Z.

3d modeling software isn’t as complex and clunky as it used to be. I find apps like Photoshop to be more power-hungry than most 3d modeling software packages these days. If a laptop can handle Photoshop with ease, that means it can handle 3d modeling just as well.

I’m a really big fan of real-time rendering in Maya. However, it requires a lot of video memory and I’m always feeling like I need more to keep up with how fast I like to work. Surprisingly enough, processing power doesn’t play as much of a role in 3d modeling as you might expect.

You can’t go wrong staying with the better-known brands such as Dell and Apple. Personally, I’d stay away from consumer-grade brands (such as HP) as much as possible since 3d work can be really hard on a laptop. You are likely going to be pushing it to it’s limits, and it needs to be durable enough to last you more than a couple years.

This is why I recommended a gaming laptop for 3d modeling. The only kinds of users who are more hard on their devices than 3d modelers are gamers. Gaming laptops are built to be abused for hours on end, and it might be the smart way to go depending how serious you are about 3d work.

Very important – especially as you start working with very complex models. Trying to grab individual vertices in a sea of others within a complex 3d model can be madding on a low-resolution (or dull) screen. I’ve had to do it enough times over the past 20 years or so that screen quality is now my #2 feature in a laptop (behind video memory) if I know that I’m going to be using it for 3d modeling and rendering.

I have an extensive background in both 2D and 3D illustration, and these days, I spend a majority of my time creating aircraft templates and airliner art. I’m basically an airplane dork.

The Alienware x17 R2 delivers stunning gaming and processing speeds, a top-notch screen and a sturdy, good-looking chassis, and it’s only hindered by an expected high price and unsurprisingly poor battery life. It’s one of the best 17.3in gaming notebooks on the market today.

Alienware laptops are rarely cheap, though, and the model I’ve reviewed costs £3149 / $3499 / €3849, and you’ll still have to pay £2149 / $2249 / €2399 for even the entry-level model.

There’s no denying that Alienware leads the market for high-end gaming laptop design. The black and white exterior is good looking and has impeccable build quality; the RGB LED logos and honeycomb vents all look excellent.

The Alienware x17 R2 is 21mm thick, which is decent for a large and powerful notebook – that figure sits between the slimmer Razer Blade 17 and the thicker Asus ROG Strix Scar 17, which are the x17’s main rivals. Bear in mind, though, that the x17 weighs 3kg and is heavier than both.

Open the Alienware x17 R2 and you’ll find a per-key RGB LED keyboard with N-key rollover, anti-ghosting and 1.5mm of travel. There’s an extra column of media keys on the right-hand edge, but there’s no numberpad.

As usual, the x17 can be upgraded with CherryMX mechanical hardware that offers even more speed and weight, but the Alienware’s standard unit is easily good enough for hardcore gamers.

The Alienware x17 I’ve reviewed has a 1080p IPS panel with a 360Hz refresh rate and 1ms response time, and it’s stunning. The refresh rate pairs with Nvidia G-Sync to provide butter-smooth animation, and that means it’s suitable for top-tier eSports. It’s also a bit better than the Asus and Razer machines, which have 3ms response times.

There are no big issues. The panel can’t render more than 80% of the Adobe and DCI-P3 gamuts, so it’s not suitable for content creators, and it could be a little brighter – it’s fine indoors, but it’ll struggle in unobstructed sunlight.

It’s also a shame that Dell doesn’t have more upgrade options. Buyers can save £250 / $100 / €250 on a Full HD screen at 165Hz, and single-player gamers can spend £650 / $200 / €350 on a 4K/120Hz panel, but there are no 2560 x 1440 or 240Hz panels available. You’ll find both on the Asus and Razer notebooks if you’d like that middle ground.

This high-end Alienware x17 R2 has an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti graphics core with 16GB of memory and a monster 175W power limit. A 20-thread Intel Core i7-12700H joins this mighty GPU, 32GB of DDR5 memory and a 1TB SSD with sensational read and write speeds of 6318MB/sec and 4155MB/sec. If you want to upgrade, the base is easily removable and the x17 has pairs of memory and M.2 SSD sockets.

The only disappointing note right now is the Alienware x17 R2’s overclocking performance. The Alienware ostensibly has two overclocking modes, but neither improved gaming speeds. Indeed, the machine’s superb 3D Mark Time Spy result of 12,486 dropped slightly to 12,434. I can only hope Dell improves this feature with firmware and software updates.

If you look at other brands that offer 17.3in, 360Hz displays with RTX 3080 Ti graphics you’ll save a little more. The only pricier rival is the Razer, which costs £4099 / $3999 / €4299 for equivalent hardware.

The Alienware x17 R2 lasted for 2hrs 13mins in a work test with the screen at 150 nits, which is a poor result even among gaming notebooks, and it played video for 3hrs 46mins. This, even more than most gaming machines, is a laptop that relies on a mains connection.

Alienware’s x17 R2 has incredible gaming and application pace inside a sturdy, good-looking chassis – with a great screen and keyboard. It’s an eye-catching, market-leading laptop.

We saw numbers that would rival far more expensive Alienware gaming laptops in this middle of the road model, though you are making some sacrifices to get there. Compared to the rest of the market, we were a little disappointed to see the same plastic chassis as the R5 and R6 models here. You"ll find far cheaper rigs offering more durable build materials out in the wild. Plus, this laptop hasn"t been built with portability in mind. Weighing in at just under 6 lbs, and with a bulky form factor to prove it, this is one you"ll be keeping firmly on your desk.

You"re still picking up luxury Alienware design features, like the LED strip of RGB lighting running around the (plentiful) back ports. Plus, we were particularly impressed with the feel of the mSeries keyboard here. That Alienware X17 form factor remains, with all the luxury accents and deep-backed hinges. However, the LED trackpad that we so loved with the R1 release has been removed for the R2. Still, there"s no point grieving RGB when there"s so much power available under the hood. We thought that was a little hard to swallow considering every Alienware x14 ships with the same 1080p 144Hz display. However, down at the bottom end of the price scale there"s actually some solid value for money.
