To understand what happens to the LCD in cold temperatures, we"ll need to go back to the basics of LCD technology. Liquid crystal displays are just like their name suggests... they contain a liquid that is housed between two layers of glass. Liquids begin to freeze as the temperature drops. As the liquid in the display freezes the response time slows down. In other words, it takes longer for the numbers and letters on the display to change (Turn ON or Turn OFF).

The best way I can think to explain the response time of the LCD in cold temperatures is a ceiling fan. When you turn OFF the ceiling fan the blades continue to turn for a few minutes, even though the power if OFF. When you turn ON a ceiling fan the blades will be at full speed in a shorter period of time. At most the blades will be at their max speed within 30 seconds. When talking about an LCD, we talk about when the display is ON (the characters can be seen) or OFF (the characters cannot be seen).

Line ‘A’ (image above) displays the amount of time it takes for a character or segment on the display to turn OFF. That is, once you turn OFF the segment, how long does it take before it disappears? The graph above shows that the character actually ‘disappears’ 3500 milliseconds (3.5 seconds) after the display is turned OFF.

Line ‘B’ (image above) displays the amount of time it takes for the character or segment to turn ON. In the above graph the segment is only 55% ‘ON’ at 8000 milliseconds (8 seconds). That means the character is only ½ (half) ON. It will look grey and not very dark. It requires more time for the display to turn ON than to turn OFF… just the opposite of a ceiling fan.

We do not recommend operating our wide temperature (extended temperature) displays below -20°C (-4°F). This is true for all segment displays (static displays or glass displays), 7 (seven) segment, 14 (fourteen) segment, and 16 (sixteen) segment LCD’s.

The concept is similar to Traveling immersion coil. When we plug in Traveling immersion coil, the current will flow in metal and generate heat to boil water.

As the result, it shows 4.3 inch TFT LCD Module display functionally under normal operating conditions. However, there is an overlapping at low temperature, because of LC"s physical characteristics. From this experiment, we know that overlapping can be solved by turning on Glass Heater.

A couple of years ago I had accidentally purchased a batch of ‘low temperature’ 16 x 2 LCD displays. These do not work with the standard 5V supply as the contrast pin requires a negative voltage for the display to appear (around minus 1.6V seems to work well).

These displays are manufactured by Powertip and have the code PC1602-H. A data sheet is available here. The part number is very similar to their ‘standard’ range (only the -H part changes). It was also not very obvious from the suppliers website that these were the low temperature range version.

As you might have discovered when using these displays outside, liquid crystal displays (LCDs) suffer from slow response in cold weather. This is due to the physical properties of the liquid crystal. To combat this, some manufacturers produce displays specifically designed for use in lower temperatures.

In the case of the Powertip PC1602-H, they require a negative voltage applied to the contrast pin on the display. If you do not apply this voltage then the display appears to not show anything, although the text is there, it does not show (or is very feint). If you apply a voltage of around -1.3 to -2V then the display will suddenly appear.

When searching for an answer about these LCD displays, other people had got them working, but no-one seemed to fully explain their circuit or how they did it. Some had mentioned diodes to give a small voltage drop. I never got that method to work for me, but email me a circuit diagram if you have got a more simple solution.

There are many versions of this circuit with slightly different component values. I built the circuit above on a bit of strip board and it worked well, giving me around -3V from a 5V supply. The circuit uses the 555 timer as a constant output frequency (of around 600Hz in this case). This ‘pumps’ current into the output capacitor, with the diodes controlling the flow of current to ensure the output voltage is negative.

I added a preset variable resistor and replaced the variable resistor (VR1 – used for the contrast) on the Serial LCD display PCB with the three connections to the negative voltage circuit.

I sent some data to the display and then twiddled the variable resistor and the display appeared! Great! Its a bit of a bodge, but now I can use up a bag of displays without buying any new components.

The same is true of environments where temperatures fall below zero, causing a screen to stop functioning. A typical LCD TV has an operating range between 0°C (32°F) and 32°C (90°F).

Of course, many indoor and outdoor locations don’t suffer temperatures outside of this range, but many locations do and placing screens in these areas can prove challenging.

One of the problems with using a screen in hot locations is that the screen itself produces quite a bit of heat. When housed in an outdoor enclosure, the heat has to be continuously removed. While cooling fans combined with an air-vent normally carry out this task on an LCD, the need to prevent moisture from getting to the screen makes the task more complicated.

To get around this problem, specially shaped vents provide an exit for hot air while preventing rainfall and other moisture from getting in. In some locations where ambient temperatures are extremely high, screens need air conditioning to ensure they don’t exceed the maximum operating temperature.

In cold climates the opposite problem occurs. The need to keep heat in often requires insulation of the screen enclosure. Often this can trap enough of the heat generated by the screen itself to keep the internal temperature above minimum, but in some locations, even this isn’t enough. Heaters, controlled by thermostats provide extra heat in these circumstances, which enables the use of LCD displays in extremely cold locations such as ski-resorts and in Arctic regions.

LCD stands for “liquid crystal display,” but this is a bit of a misnomer. In reality, the technology has no liquid components, so it isn’t susceptible to freezing and expansion in extreme cold. In most HDTVs, this range is about 50–90°F.

The temperature range for safe storage is typically even wider. Most LCD and LED sets are rated for storage in temps as low as -4°F. Always refer to your television’s manual for actual safe-temperature ranges.

If your cabin gets colder than this in the winter, you may want to consider erring on the side of caution. Cover the set in a soft blanket to protect it from dust and direct sunlight, and then store it in a dry place with above-freezing temperatures for the season, or for however long you plan to be away.

If you decide to leave the TV at the cabin for impromptu winter visits, exercise caution when turning it on in a cold room. Allow time for the cabin to warm up before turning on the TV, otherwise the extreme change in temperature may result in condensation inside the set and subsequent damage to the screen.

So, when you arrive at the cottage and fire up the woodstove, fireplace or heater, wait at least an hour (longer is better) for the screen to reach a temperature within the safe operating range. Sounds like a long time to wait, we know. But just think – you’ll have more time for card games and conversation!

The cabinet and door insulation of TwinGuard Series ultra-low temperature freezers, are constructed using patented VIP Plus thin-profile vacuum insulation to maximize storage capacity and optimize use of floor space. This thin-wall composite insulation includes narrow-profile vacuum panel layers supported by foamed-in-place insulation. The highly efficient insulation also improves temperature stability following frequent door opening and extends warm-up times during power outages.

Easy to read close-up or from a distance, the high contrast color LCD display allows for easy touchscreen use. The display panel includes comprehensive audible and visual warnings, unit diagnostics, running temperature log and predictive analytics. A USB port makes transferring this logged data to a PC convenient. All performance attributes are displayed and an internal time/temperature log is expressed in graphic form.

TwinGuard ultra-low temperature freezers are managed by a microprocessor-based controller that combines security, monitoring, predictive performance and data logging functions into a single display with password protected menu screens.

The patent pending EZlatch is engineered to tolerate frequent door openings, simplify one-handed access and control frost associated with extreme temperature differentials. The EZlatch, one component of the Advanced Frost Control system, is ergonomically designed to ensure comfortable operation. The Advanced Frost Control system in the TwinGuard series freezer model MDF-DU702VXC-PA combines an additional eight components specially engineered to enhance the performance envelope and ensure sample security, temperature integrity and frost control while extending freezer life.
