Standard XC70 safety systems include City Safety, a world-first technology that made its debut on the Volvo XC60. City Safety is a driver support system aimed at preventing or mitigating collisions with a vehicle ahead occurring at speeds of 19 mph or less. It utilizes a closing velocity sensor to help determine whether a collision is likely. Depending on the closing speed, City Safety will either pre-charge the brakes or automatically brake the XC70 to help avoid a rear-end collision or lessen its impact. Advanced powerplant choices for XC70 include a 3.2-liter naturally aspirated 6-cylinder engine that delivers 240 horsepower with ULEV II emissions rating or 230 horsepower with PZEV (Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle) rating. The XC70 T6 AWD 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine develops 300 horsepower and 325 lb.-ft. of torque. Maximum torque is on tap from just 2,100 rpm and remains available all the way up the rev range, resulting in quick acceleration and smooth drivability.
Volvo Car Group has been creating wagons since 1953, when the ‘two cars in one" Volvo Duett was launched. Six decades on, the new Volvo V70 carries on the tradition of combining form and function beautifully. A number of new exterior design cues reinforce the sophisticated contemporary presence of the iconic estate car. Volvo Car Group’s two-litre, four-cylinder all-new Drive-E engine family is launched in the autumn of 2013. Initially, the new V70 is available with the new turbo diesel D4 and the petrol turbo T5. Fuel consumption is down to class-leading 4.2 l/100 km (109 g CO2 per km) in the most efficient D4 version.
The T6 petrol engine has a displacement of 3.0 litres and pumps out 304 hp and 440 Nm of torque. Fuel consumption is 10.2 l/100 km (EU Combined) with All Wheel Drive. The engine"s power is delivered to the wheels via Volvo"s second-generation six-speed automatic Geartronic transmission.
The automatic D3 (136 hp version of the Volvo V70 now have fuel consumption of 4.9 l/100 km (130 g/km), while the figures with the manual gearbox are down to 4.5 l/100 km (119 g/km).
The fuel consumption of the 115 hp, four-cylinder D2 diesel in the new Volvo V70 with a manual gearbox is now down to a class-leading 4.2l/100 km (EU Combined), which translates into CO2 emissions of 109 g/km. The corresponding figures with the automatic gearbox are 4.2 l/100km and 111 g/km.
The HMI (Human Machine Interface) functionality Sensus is extended with the option to add intuitive all-new technology that enables connectivity and Internet in the car. The Sensus Connected Touch turns the 7-inch display into a state-of-the-art infrared, beam-scanned touch screen that can be used even when wearing gloves - a world first in cars.
The Adaptive Digital Display, which debuted in the all-new V40, uses an active TFT (Thin Film Transistor) crystal display to bring the driver personalised information. There are three themes to choose from: Elegance, Eco and Performance.
The default mode Elegance has a classic look and layout. The Ecomode has a green colour theme and is designed to encourage and reward a fuel-efficient driving style. Performance features red illumination, and a rev scale instead of the speedometer displayed in the Elegance and Eco versions.
New advanced software, including more rapid vision processing, has now made it possible to extend Volvo Cars" present detection and auto brake technology to cover certain cyclist situations as well.
Road Sign Information supports the driver by displaying road signs in the instrument display. Road Sign Information can be combined with the Speed Alert function, which provides the driver with a visual warning in the speedometer if the speed limit is exceeded.
The Volvo On Call system can be combined with the Bluetooth mobile phone service. The Bluetooth connection allows hands-free phone conversations as well as music streaming from a preferred Bluetooth enabled portable music player. Volvo is actually the only brand to offer Bluetooth music streaming throughout the entire vehicle range.
A mobile application that makes sure that the driver can stay in touch with the parked car via an iPhone or Android smart phone. The mobile application is an extension of Volvo On Call.
Owners of all new models with Volvo On Call can download the application that opens up a range of connectivity possibilities. The mobile app is free and downloaded via the iPhone and Android application stores. The app is designed to offer the owner an intuitive, easy-to-use relationship with the car from a distance.
For 2014, Volvo treats its award-winning XC60 small premium utility to the most extensive refresh since its introduction four years ago. Completely new styling from the windshield forward sets the stage for a dramatic entry. Inside the cabin, the XC60 receives distinctive new design elements, luxury touches and convenience features. Innovative safety technologies make their debut while a new roster of available upgrades take the XC60 to the next level of elegance and sophistication.
The changes begin on the outside, where the XC60 sports a new hood, front fenders and fascia that emphasize a wider and more confident appearance. Redesigned headlights flank a bold new grille sporting a larger Volvo Ironmark. Other changes include a new lower front spoiler with bright trim, vertically mounted LED daytime running lights, new front and rear skid plate décor and integrated exhaust pipe design. New 18-inch Pan alloy wheels are standard on 3.2 trim levels while the top-line T6 R-Design gains new 20-inch Ixion II alloys.
The XC60 is Volvo"s first crossover to offer sporty steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Standard on T6 AWD and R-Design, these paddle shifters let the driver shift manually with both hands on the steering wheel. All XC60s gain a new shift knob for the floor-mounted shifter featuring piano black background with illuminated symbols for ease of viewing in the dark.
Every XC60 receives a new high-tech instrument cluster. The base 3.2 gains an easy to read analog style cluster. A new adaptive digital display employing Thin Film Transistor (TFT) technology is standard on 3.2 Premier, Premier Plus and Platinum trims levels plus all T6 AWD and R-Design models. With this cluster, drivers can custom-tailor the display to suit their needs by selecting from three different themes:
Performance has red background illumination for a more dynamic look. A tachometer replaces the speedometer while vehicle speed is shown digitally. The right display includes a power meter gauge that informs the driver how much power is available and how much is being used at any given moment.
Setting the Stage for a Dynamic Drive All XC60s gain new Corner Traction Control (CTC) by torque vectoring. This technology made its debut on the Volvo S60 as a further refinement of Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC). This system makes it easier to smoothly maintain the desired line on winding roads and on wet surfaces. When driving into a curve, the brakes are applied to the inner driven wheel while more power is transmitted to the outer driven wheel. This enables the driver to take the curve more tightly while reducing any tendency to understeer. The driver can accelerate out of the curve while retaining confidence inspiring grip of the road.
Additional safety advancements are included with the new Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) Package offered on all models. This package includes BLIS, front and rear park assist, and new Cross Traffic Alert (CTA) and Lane Change Merge Aid (LCMA). The system is based on radar technology installed behind the rear wheels and will detect traffic from a longer distance than the previous BLIS system. A larger detection area provides the capability of informing the driver of rapidly approaching vehicles. LCMA utilizes two levels of LED lights mounted in the A-pillar. While CTA uses radar sensors in the rear bumper to monitor traffic when backing out of a parking space, warning the driver of approaching traffic via a visual alert and audio signal. A Technology Package, optional on all XC60s, receives an enhanced detection capability feature. Cyclist Detection has been added to Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake. The package also includes Active High Beam that automatically switches the headlights to low beam when opposite traffic is detected, Road Sign Information (RSI) displays traffic speed signs for the driver on the instrument cluster based on the Forward Looking Camera (FLC), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Queue Assist, Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake (CWAB), Distance Alert (DA), Driver Alert Control (DAC) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW).
The XC60 was the first vehicle equipped with City Safety. This advanced technology is a driver support system aimed at preventing or mitigating collisions occurring at speeds of 31 mph or less. It utilizes a closing velocity sensor to help determine whether a collision is likely. Depending on the closing speed, City Safety will either pre-charge the brakes or automatically brake the XC60 to help avoid a rear-end collision or lessen its impact. XC60 offers three levels of performance to satisfy a wide range of buyers. Those seeking the greatest value will be attracted to the XC60 3.2. Its naturally aspirated six-cylinder engine provides 240 horsepower with ULEV II emissions rating or 230 horsepower with PZEV (Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle) rating. Front-wheel drive is standard while Volvo"s All-Wheel Drive with Instant Traction is optional.
The R-Design also endows the XC60 a bolder appearance. Standard features include new 20-inch Ixion II alloy wheels, color-matched lower body moldings and a metallic-themed interior with unique aluminum inserts in the steering wheel, door moldings and the iconic center stack. It also maintains typical R-design attributes like silk metal finish outside mirror housings, trim moldings, skid plates, twin chrome tailpipes and the R-Design logo embossed in the front seat backrests and displayed on the grille.
XC60"s standard Volvo Sensus system lets drivers manage information from the audio unit, navigation system (if equipped) and other functions, displaying them onto a seven-inch high-definition color monitor in the upper part of the center console. It allows the driver to explore the high-tech features of the vehicle and personalize them to suit his or her needs.
Volvo"s trim level strategy offers customers the flexibility to add additional features. Buyers can still select the XC60 3.2, T6 AWD and R-Design without a trim level if desired. For 2014, the Premier trim level, offered exclusively for the 3.2, gains an auto-dimming inside rearview mirror and adaptive digital display. Premier Plus adds rear park assist camera and quick-fold front passenger seat. Platinum receives auto-dimming power-retractable exterior mirrors and interior accent lighting. The Platinum trim offered for all three XC60 models features the Volvo Premium Sound System with Dolby® Pro Logic® II Surround Sound, 12 premium speakers and 650 watts. Also included is a Navigation System with real time traffic, remote control and map care plus a rear park assist camera.
New stand-alone options include active dual xenon headlights with washers for 3.2 and T6 AWD, Urban Wood inlays for these models, an accessory prep cable, heated front seats (also available with the Climate Package) and 20-inch Avior alloy wheels for T6 AWD. The XC60 was the first Volvo with standard HD Radio that updates radio signals to digital quality. FM broadcast quality equals the level of a typical CD while AM broadcast quality rivals the prior level of FM. The XC60"s standard high performance sound system includes BluetoothTM streaming audio, and AUX and USB inputs to allow connection and control of personal music devices such as iPodsTM, memory sticks and other media players.

Spectacular spy shots from the facelifted 2013 Volvo XC60 SUV. Since Geely is the owner all new Volvo models have to go to China for final approval. Geely also plans to make this XC60 in China, local production will most likely start in 2014. The 2013 Volvo XC60 gets a completely new face with a wider grille and another not-too-pretty grille-kinda-thing under the bumper.
The current Volvo XC60 is imported into China, competing against the locally made BMW X3 and Audi Q5, that are some 20% cheaper. Still, the Volvo is popular, especially with the hot 300hp T6 six-cylinder turbo. Price in China ranges from 389.900 yuan to 659.900 yuan.
The first generation (2000–2009)S70 and was based on the P2 platform. It had a similar designed estate version called Volvo V70 and a high performance engine and sports-oriented suspension version called S60 R.ECC concept car and the S80.
The third generation joined the Volvo line-up in 2018 for the 2019 model year.Scalable Product Architecture platform, in America"s first Volvo factory in Ridgeville, South Carolina.
The Volvo S60 was released in 2000 (2001 model year) being the company"s new generation sports sedan. The S60 is aimed to mainly compete in Europe with the BMW 3 Series (E46), the Mercedes-Benz C-Class (W203) and the Alfa Romeo 156. Unlike its rivals, the Volvo S60 continued production for 9 years with multiple facelifts. When it was introduced the appearance was unlike the squared vehicles offered in previous years, and continued the new design tradition introduced by the larger S80, utilizing a cab forward approach and was more organic appearing with a pronounced shelf along the beltline that ran the length of the vehicle, achieving a Cd=0.28 drag coefficient.crumple zones, driver and front passenger dual threshold airbags with a collapsible three-stage steering column, Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) supplemented with air bags for driver and front passenger, along with a side curtain airbag for front and rear passengers, anti-submarine seats, five padded head restraints with Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS), and automatic seat belt pretensioners while front belts also have height adjustment.
The S60 came standard with Volvo"s own radio unit, the HU-613, the HU-803 and was later upgraded to the HU-650 and an optional extra HU-850 unit. The HU-850 unit features a 225 or 335-watt power output (depending on optional external amplifier) with three presets: 2CH, 3CH and Dolby Digital Pro Logic II Surround Sound. The Four-C chassis from the S60 R became an option on some S60s.
Police specification models came about through Volvo"s extensive work alongside the users of the vehicles and Police Fleet Management departments. As a result, the Police specification vehicles have a striking difference from original showroom model that sometimes the Volvo S60 is used as police cars.
First introduced in 2004, Volvo"s S60 R used a Haldex computer controlled all-wheel-drive system mated to a 300 PS (221 kW; 296 hp) / 400 N⋅m (300 lbf⋅ft) inline-5 which sends 95 percent of the torque to the front wheels under normal driving conditions and can send up to 70 percent to the rear wheels as necessary.manual transmission, or an available 5-speed automatic which allowed only 258 lb⋅ft (350 N⋅m) torque in 1st and 2nd gears. The 2006–2007 models came with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission (which was no longer torque-restricted).
Semi-active suspension with Four-C (a short name for "Continuously Controlled Chassis Concept") allows the user to select from three modes: Comfort, Sport, and Advanced. "Comfort" attempts to soften the car over bumps, while "Advanced" firms the suspension considerably and gives more aggressive throttle response - a setting Volvo implies is for use on the race track. This is accomplished through a drive by wire throttle, allowing the same pedal travel to result in different performance when the appropriate mode is selected,Ohlins Racing AB and shock absorber manufacturer Monroe for the self-adjusting shock absorbers.
Another Volvo factory option for only the S60 R was a body kit which included front bumper splitters, side skirts and a rear valance, color matched to the body. The body kit was only available with certain body colors and in certain markets.
The second generation S60 began production in Ghent, Belgium on May 17, 2010, with an expected annual production of 90,000 vehicles.Geneva Motor Show in March 2010.Haldex AWD system. More differences in the second generation S60 include the new large Volvo iron symbol, parallel to the grille LED day running lamps and larger spaced letters in the brand name on rear.
The Volvo S60 and V60 come with Volvo"s City Safety system as standard, which is the same system fitted to its sister the XC60. This system stops the car in the event of impending collision in "City Traffic" below 19 mph (31 km/h). Also, a new safety feature named "Pedestrian Detection" (available on both the V60 and S60) detects people in front of the car and automatically applies the brakes if the driver does not react in time. The new sedan shows off Volvo"s completely new design language already seen in the Volvo XC60 concept. It rides on the same platform as the XC60. The goal of this new design was to target younger demographics.
In 2013, the T5 engine was revamped before the launch of the Drive-E arrival. Among the tweaks to the T5 power plant is a boost in engine compression to 9.5:1 from 9.0, engine torque peaks at 4200 rpm and engine management changes provide faster gear changes and upshifts when the 6-speed automatic gearbox is in the sport mode. Output remains the same over 2012 at 250 bhp (186 kW; 253 PS) and 266 lb⋅ft (361 N⋅m) of torque, although there is a provision for overboost from the turbo which bumps the torque number to 295 lb⋅ft (400 N⋅m). The changes in compression ratio helps the S60 T5 deliver 1 mpg‑US (0.43 km/L) extra in the city and combined cycle. Front-drive versions are rated at 21 mpg‑US (8.9 km/L) city/30 mpg‑US (13 km/L) highway for a combined of 24 mpg‑US (10 km/L), while the AWD model is 1 mpg‑US (0.43 km/L) less across the board. Volvo also says the T5 AWD is good for a 0–60 mph (0–97 km/h) sprint of 6.6 seconds, while the front-drive version is 0.2 seconds quicker.
Changes include all-new exterior panels from the A-pillars forward including a new hood, front fenders and fascia; a wider grille with a larger Ironmark is flanked by new headlights while a larger, wider lower front intake gains bright accents and horizontally mounted LED daytime running lights; new integrated exhaust pipes at rear, a new Adaptive Digital TFT Display instrument cluster for select models (R-Design versions include unique blue instrument dials), new paddle shifters on T6 AWD and R-Design models (optional on T5), Advanced Quick Shift (AQS) option on all T6 engines and activated when the transmission is set to sport mode or when using paddle shifters, IntelliSafe with Pedestrian Detection and Cyclist Detection with full auto brake and Cross Traffic Alert became part of the Technology Package, a new radar-based Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) to monitor and alert the driver to rapidly approaching vehicles behind the car while still informing the driver about vehicles in the blind spots on both sides of the car, Cross Traffic Alert with radar sensors at the rear end of the car to alert the driver to crossing traffic from the sides when reversing out of a parking space.
North America models went on sale as 2014 model year vehicles in late 2013. Early models include S60 T5 (base, Premier, Premier Plus, Platinum), T6 (AWD, Premier Plus, Platinum, R-Design AWD, RD Platinum).
The Volvo S60L PPHEV (Petrol Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) concept car was unveiled at the 2014 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition.Volvo Cars announced that the S60L PPHEV will be manufactured at the Chengdu plant and is scheduled to be launched in China in the first half of 2015.
The S60L PPHEV shares the same electric-drive technology as the Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid, but instead of the diesel engine of the V60, the S60L PPHEV has a 2-liter, four-cylinder gasoline turbocharged engine from Volvo Cars’ new Drive-E engine family. The 50 kW (67 hp) electric motor is powered by an 11.2 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that delivers an all-electric range of up to 50 km (31 mi). The petrol-powered engine produces 177 kW (237 hp) and 350 N·m (258 lb-ft) of torque. The driver can select via three buttons among three driving modes: Pure, Hybrid or Power. In the default hybrid mode, the CO2 emissions are about 50 g/km, corresponding to a fuel consumption of 2.0 L/100 km (140 mpg‑imp; 120 mpg‑US). By selecting Pure mode, the car runs in all-electric mode, and the Power mode combines the capabilities of the engine and motor to deliver 225 kW (302 hp), 550 N·m (405 lb-ft) of torque and 0–100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration in 5.5 seconds.
Volvo unveiled the production model, the S60L T6 Twin Engine PHEV, at the 2015 Shanghai Motor Show. Sales of the S60L T6 PHEV, limited to the Chinese market, began on 22 April 2015. The production model has an all-electric range of 53 km (33 mi).

The 2015 S60 Polestar"s 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder produces 350 PS (260 kW; 350 hp) and 500 N⋅m (370 lb⋅ft) of torque, an additional 20 hp (15 kW; 20 PS) and 20 N⋅m (15 lb⋅ft) more torque compared to the same engine in the S60 R-Design. This is developed by way of massaged engine management software, a stainless exhaust with 64-millimetre (2.5 in) pipes, new twin-scroll BorgWarner turbochargers and new intercooler. Polestar also did work to the transmission with new calibration for quicker gearshifts and launch control capabilities. The Haldex four-wheel-drive system also has Polestar tuning for more rear torque distribution, and the stability control system has been massaged. The chassis is firmer with a suspension that features Öhlins shock absorbers with 80 percent stiffer springs sitting on 20-inch wheels that would normally come wrapped with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires from the factory. It"s hard to believe the XC60 midsized crossover has only been around since 2010. It actually seems older, really. We feel like we"ve seen them pretty much everywhere since forever, but that"s thanks to their popularity (for a Volvo, anyway). Thankfully, Volvo refreshed it significantly in 2014 and made the fascias more sophisticated and did away with a lot of dark exterior plastics, which made it look cheaper than it was. The current model is on its way out soon since Chinese-owned Volvo is looking to redo much of their lineup -- having started out with a bang with the hot-selling XC90 full-sized SUV.
Our T6 Drive-E benefitted from Volvo"s more potent edition of their 2.0-liter turbocharged four, largely because it gets assistance from a supercharger for a healthy 302 horsepower 295 lb-ft of torque. The T6 Drive-E also gets the smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic instead of the six-speed automatic that shows up in lesser trims.Ride Quality: Limo-like ride quality. Great seats and good shock absorption. 19-inch Michelin all-season tires ride smoothly.
Though Volvo reworked their XC60 two years ago, they failed to do much with the dated tech, and that"s the biggest chagrin we have for this crossover. It"s just plain old and looks that way. The big keypad in the center stack is convoluted and hard to use. The infotainment system is likewise dated when it comes to controls, despite the fact that its visually appealing and easy to read.
It fares better when it comes to safety. Volvo is synonymous with supreme safety, and the current XC60 is no exception, garnering an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ for the 2016 model year. And that comes as no surprise given Volvo"s commitment to being one of the safest brands in the industry.Infotainment Screen Size/Quality: The 7-inch screen is easy to read but is set in a bit too deep, probably to avoid glare. There"s also no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Grrr. At least there"s WiFi.
We won"t call it beautiful, but Volvo is more about sophistication and sensibility rather than visual punch (at least with the older generation cars). We like the revised fascias that give the Volvo a bit more presence, and the body is well-sculpted like any modern CUV should be. We like the fact that Volvo eschews busyness in their design language, and even when this car is replaced with the next-gen version, it will still look handsome, especially in charcoal gray.Front: The wide Volvo grille isn"t overly tall like so many other cars today, keeping it clean with simple headlights and a crisp lower fascia.
Volvo takes the time to do their Contour seats just about perfectly, and we wonder why other automakers can"t do as good of a job with support and bolstering. If you"re going to take a long trip in a car, these seats are pretty much perfect. We laud Volvo for not sacrificing comfort for aesthetics, though these seats are pretty attractive.
Despite an odd storage compartment behind the waterfall center stack, the rest of the Volvo works well in the storage department. Good door pockets, a fairly capacious center armrest and good cupholders ensure easy gear stowage. Though you likely won"t haul any furniture in the XC60, there"s plenty of space for a weekend road trip behind the second row.Storage: Good storage options, but it"s no Honda Pilot. There wasn"t much we didn"t like except the strange space behind the center stack, which was hard to reach and made it easy to forget that we left things there since you can"t see it directly unless you peer behind it.
You can wait for the 2018 XC60 in hopes that it looks like a small XC90 (which it will), or you can get this one now. It does everything very well--drives comfortably, looks attractive and stores plenty. You"ll just have to be okay with not having great infotainment technology or audio/infotainment/climate controls. It"s a sacrifice but not a huge one since the Volvo XC60 remains very appealing even in its final iteration for this generation.

Volvo has pretty much fallen off the radar screen recently. After a decade-long ownership by Ford, it was cut loose in 2010, ending up in the arms of the Chinese Geely company.
Perhaps the combination of Volvo?s expertise and Geely?s money and connections in China will work, as it seems to have with India?s Tata and Jaguar/Land Rover, two other European brands orphaned by Ford.
No wagon at the moment, which seems odd for Volvo. But a new V60 wagon is coming to what Volvo calls ?Candanavia? this January ? if that means us and not the U.S., well, their loss.
There?s up-rated trim, and, in T6 and Sport-package-equipped T5 models, sport seats that continue Volvo?s tradition of great seat comfort, with added side support for brisk cornering.
The S60 also has Volvo?s odd open-at-the-sides centre console storage bin, out of which stuff keeps falling. Not sure who came up with this idea, but it can?t be fixed too soon.
The instrument panel on the T6 is a TFT (Thin Film Transistor) affair that allows you to choose from three different formats, ECO, Elegance and Sport. The latter has red lighting, which I liked aesthetically, but, in some daylight conditions, proved hard to read.
Volvo gets the direction for manual shifting of the lever wrong ? it should be back for upshift and forward for downshifts ? but so does almost everybody except a few like Porsche and Mazda.
The Haldex full-time four-wheel-drive system nominally directs 95 per cent of torque to the front axle, but can quickly change that ratio depending on circumstances. Volvo says it now does this transition faster.
As you would expect from a Volvo, there?s a pages-long list of safety features, including pedestrian and cyclist detection with full automatic braking.
This is all part of the company?s stated goal of ?Nobody dies in a Volvo? by 2020. A worthy, if tall, order, which I think underestimates the creativity of drivers.
Kudos to Volvo as well for being one of the very few car companies who get Daytime Running Lights correct ? they don?t have them. You turn the headlight switch to ?on? when you buy the car, and never have to touch it again.
Volvo has, so far at least, resisted the siren call of run-flat tires. And that?s probably the main reason why the S60?s ride was orders of magnitude better than the BMW?s.
More critical for BMW?s image, the Volvo handled better, too. I believe that?s because BMW had to soften the 3?s suspension to tame the run-flat ride, and lost handling in the process.
In sum then, the Volvo S60 is a handsome, sufficiently spacious, nicely-built, quick, smooth-riding and nimble car that just happens to be as safe as houses.
What?s Worst: Rear-seat room not best in class, minor controls require some getting used to, you might have to convince your friends that Volvo is still alive.
Inside, the Chinese-market Crown looks pretty much identical to the Japanese models, save for minor changes to the instrument cluster and centre console. A 13-inch TFT LCD portrait-layout touchscreen sits front and centre on the dashboard, controlling both the infotainment system and the climate control.
My father is a wise man, so after he and my mother survived a major accident without injuries while travelling in their Volvo 760, he came to the decision that another Volvo would soon be residing in the family garage.
Volvo brought the S60 to Canada as a new model for 2001. The car was the first modern Volvo to step away from the boxy designs that had dominated the lineup for the latter part of the 20th century.
The S60 represented Volvo’s new generation sports sedan, and it had been designed, engineered and packaged to compete against the likes of the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.
Both my parents liked the fact that the Volvo design team has stayed relatively true to the original model with regards to styling and overall dimensions.
The S60 has been significantly revised for 2014, and the car has been fitted with all-new exterior panels from the windshield forward. There is a shapely new hood, wide front fenders, and an enlarged grille bookmarked by elongated headlights. A stylish new front fascia sports a larger air intake, bright accent trim, and horizontally mounted LED daytime running lights.
“I really like the look of the new car. It has a more modern appearance, but is obviously a Volvo,” offered my father. “I must admit, however, that I still prefer the look of the tail light treatment and fender curves of the first generation model as it really helped set it apart from other cars of the period.”
The interior has been updated so that the S60 will remain competitive. The S60 T6 AWD features a new Adaptive Digital TFT Display instrument cluster, paddle shifters (for the first time), and a seven-inch colour display screen to keep the driver apprised of various system functions.
A full suite of Volvo’s innovative safety technologies can be ordered at purchase, but the test unit featured the basic selection which includes a new radar-based Blind Spot
“The seats are very comfortable and there is more room in the back seat area,” piped in my mother. “I think Volvo have done a very good job with this car.”
“I would definitely consider another Volvo, although there is always some concern about the ownership situation. Hopefully, the decision-makers at Geely will let Volvo do what they do so well, and not cut corners on materials, equipment or production costs in an effort to maximize profits. That would be a real shame.”
My mother noted that there seemed to be fewer full-time Volvo dealerships in operation which makes access to service a concern. As a result, she felt that when she and my father decide to pull the trigger on a new car in the near future, they might be more inclined to look at something more mainstream. She always gets the last word in.
