Italian motorcycle manufacturer Aprilia has been hard at work in developing new, small displacement motorcycles particularly for the Asian market, as well as the beginner-friendly market in Europe. It’s most recent introduction, which is expected to make its way to the global market soon, comes to us in the form of the new and improved GPR250R sportbike.

You would expect a beginner bike packed with this many premium features to command quite a tidy sum. However, Aprilia has managed to retail the bike for quite a bargain. For the price of CNY 26,800, or the equivalent of $4,144 USD, you could have yourself a premium, tech-laden beginner friendly sportbike. That is, of course, assuming Aprilia retains this price point if and when it decides to introduce the GPR250R in the global market.

The Tuono’s entire arsenal of active driving safety systems has also been refreshed. The basis for this is the higher computing power of the new Marelli 11MP ECU and the new, six-axis IMU for calculating the lean angles.

The Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 costs including VAT and ancillary costs from 17,490 euros, the Tuono V4 1100 Factory is in the price list from 20,990 euros.

Aprilia will bring the Tuono V4 with higher handlebars and better wind protection in 2021. The motorcycle should appeal to touring riders. So the Tuono V4 Factory can stay what it is: a radically sharp and fast naked bike with superbike genes.

Presumably the new and strict Euro 5 rules were the reason for the upgrade of the new V4 Tuono models. But Aprilia has seized the opportunity and vigorously revised the Tuono V4. Even when it comes to fundamental issues, everything is new in 2021. The Tuono V4 is no longer just the cheaper version of the flagship “Factory ”. It was equipped with a higher windshield and offers a handlebar that is 20 mm higher. The passenger seat is also more comfortable. There the footrests have been mounted lower and the bench offers more comfort. Aprilia also offers a luggage system as an option.

The Tuono V4 is still cheaper. This is because, in contrast to the Factory, the electronic chassis from Ohlins is dispensed with. A mechanical chassis from Sachs is used. The Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 costs including VAT and ancillary costs from 17,490 euros, the Tuono V4 1100 Factory is in the price list from 20,990 euros. The Factory remains the more expensive variant and is also the model with the sharper image. It is still the naked bike that comes closest to the Superbike sister model. In 2021, for example, the swing arm was also taken over by the RSV4.

The great strength of the Aprilia Tuono V4 Factory remained with the motorcycle. It gives the driver a lot of confidence in the front wheel and it is easy to hit the line precisely. The handlebars are wide, the seating position is upright, but the sporty motorcycle offers stable handling. This is certainly made possible by the high-quality electronics. At the exit of the bend, the electronic anti-wheelie control stops precisely a few millimeters above the asphalt. The wheelie feels harmonious and natural in the saddle. The acceleration never comes across as foam-braked, but always brutal but predictable.

Aprilia offers six different riding modes for the Aprilia Tuono V4 2021. Whereby these are divided into 2 areas of application. Two predefined setups and an individually configurable setup are available for the road. A permanently installed setup and two individually adaptable driving modes are available for the racetrack. The individual driving modes are equipped with the appropriate algorithms for the electronic driving aids. New in 2021: The upgraded electronics now regulate the engine braking effect just as much depending on the lean angle as the ABS and traction control. The Tuono Factory looks threatening and aggressive, but the all-round successful electronics package makes it a pleasant motorcycle to drive.

The challenging Euro 5 requirements made the motorcycle heavier overall, but Aprilia was able to save the weight by using a lighter lithium battery. In the end, Aprilia still gives 209 kg with 90% tank capacity as weight.

Following the long tradition, the new Tuono V4 Factory has also adopted a large part of the design components from the super sporty RSV4. The tank, seat and rear section are shared with the Superbike sister and underline the close relationship and sporty attitude of the Tuono. The Tuono V4 Factory gets the same rear as the RSV4, with the pillion seat cover and the high-positioned footrests emphasizing the sporty note even more. When it comes to electronics, too, you can rely on the high-quality superbike hardware and software of the RSV4. The so-called APRC suite receives an update with new operating logic which is also used in the 2021 RSV4.

The upgraded driving aids are also convincing in practice. Die-hard Tuono fans will probably only consider that “Factory ”as the only true Tuono. But with the new positioning of the Tuono V4, it is now open to a new target group. The factory remains as it is: a lightning-fast naked bike that offers a lot of riding fun.

The Tuono’s entire arsenal of active driving safety systems has also been refreshed. The basis for this is the higher computing power of the new Marelli 11MP ECU and the new, six-axis IMU for calculating the lean angles.

A passenger is no longer unwelcome on the new Aprilia Tuono V4 and can now enjoy a more spacious and comfortable, new upholstery and modified footrests.

The Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 costs including VAT and ancillary costs from 17,490 euros, the Tuono V4 1100 Factory is in the price list from 20,990 euros.

It is not just the small Euro 5 update with the Tuono V4. Aprilia does well in terms of chassis, aerodynamics and electronics. However, the engine remains unchanged in terms of displacement and remains equally powerful.

Aprilia has given the Tuono V4 a decent upgrade for 2021. Especially the new swing arm in MotoGP style should ensure a lot of joy on the road and in the eye of the beholder. Even the strong ones Aprilia RS 660 or Tuono 660 ajar front cladding with LED headlights and cornering lights should cause tongue snaps.

The hammer V4 of the Tuono remains unchanged in terms of displacement and performance. So you can look forward to 1,077 cubic meters, 175 hp and 121 Nm. It is not yet known whether something has changed in the speed levels due to the Euro 5 update. This applies equally to the V4 and the V4 Factory. This is the difference to the likewise new Aprilia RSV4, which with 1,099 cubic has got a little more displacement with still 217 hp. A new exhaust system should get the well-known goose bumps sound despite the new volume limits.

In terms of optics, the front in particular has been completely redrawn. To RS 660, Tuono 660 and the RSV4 The Tuono V4 also gets the new family face with the new triple LED headlight unit with daytime running lights “Cornering light”-Function. Also new and improved is the comfort, which should be increased by the raised handlebars, the protective upper fairing and the slightly modified tank shape. This seems to differ from the Factory, which, according to Aprilia, should keep its status as a racing instrument in terms of comfort, which speaks for a flat handlebar and short disc at the Factory. Both have in common: improved aerodynamics are provided by the winglets integrated into the fairing, which are also used in a similar form on the RS 660 and RSV4. A passenger is no longer unwelcome on the new Aprilia Tuono V4 and can now enjoy a more spacious and comfortable, new upholstery and modified footrests, which again speaks for more comfortable ergonomics of the V4 compared to the Factory. Fun fact: Aprilia also offers tailor-made saddlebags as accessories for the V4.

In addition to the cornering lights, the entire arsenal was turned on active driving safety systems the Tuono refreshed. The basis for this is the higher computing power of the new Marelli 11MP ECU and the new, six-axis IMU for calculating the inclines. Furthermore, the electronic management with ride-by-wire has been improved and the APRC operating logic has also been refined. Just as new as the adjustable engine brake are the now six riding modes. Three for the racetrack (two of which are customizable) and three for the road (one of which is customizable). As a rider, only the riding mode is selected and the stored settings with regard to traction control, wheelie control, engine brake, ABS and the other managed parameters such as the response of the throttle valve are automatically changed. All of this can be set and controlled via a new TFT screen. Pit limiter and cruise control, like a quickshifer with blipper, should still be on board with both variants. New control elements should also make the numerous setting options easier and more intuitive.

The new Tuono V4 from Aprilia is available in the color variants Tarmac Gray and Glacier White, the Factory only in black with red rims. Both models will be available from March 2021. The Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 costs including VAT and ancillary costs from 17,490 euros, the Tuono V4 1100 Factory is in the price list from 20,990 euros. The 2020 models of the V4 and Factory were available for 16,990 and 19,990 euros.

Aprilia has extensively developed its top naked bike. The optics were modernized, the electronics refreshed. It’s great that you haven’t jumped on the over 200 hp train when it comes to performance.

Aprilia has already brought us the grand unveilings of the new Tuono 660 and recently debuted RS 660 – so now it’s time for their bigger full-size brothers to get some time in the spotlight. The RSV4 and Tuono V4 are coming into 2021 with some notable updates to the base and factory versions.

For those not caught up on Aprilia’s model guide, with both the V4 and 660 versions; the Tuono and RS share the same engine and general DNA, but the Tuono is typically more comfortable for every-day streetability leaving the RS as a highly-capable track-missile.

The engine has been revisited due to Euro 5 regulations and as a result, Aprilia took the opportunity to bump the engine displacement from 1077cc to 1099cc’s for a total of produce 217 horsepower.

The RSV4 also comes with a new (and bigger) TFT display featured in the dash along with an updated ECU. The electronics have had a go-over with new multi-level engine braking, six riding modes, and the ride-by-wire system has seen improvements.

Since the Tuono is so closely tied to the RSV4 (with the similarities far outweighing the differences), most of the changes that made their way over to the RSV4 can also be found on the Tuono: headlights, electronics (including riding modes and ride-by-wire update), ECU, IMU, fairing changes, and the rest. The Factory Tuono will also closely resemble the RSV4 Factory and reflect those changes as well.

The main difference between the Tuono and RSV4 going into this year will be the engine. Aprilia opted to keep the 1077cc engine (producing 157 hp) in the Tuono V4, so if you’re looking for face-melting power the RSV4 is the better option in that regard.

At the moment, we have no official pricing for the V4 duo available from Aprilia, but you can probably expect a slight pricing increase from last year’s model due to the big changes that have made their way over to both bikes.

The Aprilia Tuono is a naked motorcycle manufactured by Aprilia from 2002. It is based on the Aprilia RSV Mille. Its successor, the Aprilia RSV1000R superbike shares its engine, gearbox, frame and, partly, its suspension. The Tuono was succeeded by the Aprilia Tuono V4 R for model year 2011, though the V2 model continued in production into the 2011 model year.

The current Aprilia Tuono is designed as a streetfighter with a lot of electronic aids such as multi level traction control, ABS, Wheelie control, launch control and AQS(Aprilia Quick Shift electronic System).

Following the 2001 Bologna Motor Show, the Aprilia Tuono made its debut in a series of 220 individually numbered bikes. Called the Tuono R Limited and in hindsight being a proof of concept for the future RSV Tuono Factory, it had the 94.9 kW (129.0 PS; 127.3 hp) engine of the RSV Mille R, a gold colored frame and was built solely out of high end materials such as carbon fiber, kevlar and titanium. Specs included Öhlins Racing suspension, OZ forged alloy wheels, Brembo 4-pad brake calipers and an Aprilia Racing titanium exhaust system with matching EEPROM.

The roots of the RSV Tuono lie with the 1998 - 2003 RSV Mille superbike. The original 2003-2005 RSV Tuono uses the 2002 Mille frame, engine, suspension and brakes. The majority of parts are interchangeable between Mille and Tuono models up until the introduction of the RSV 1000 R which replaced the Mille. One minor difference is that the RSV Tuono is fitted with a steering damper as standard whereas the RSV Mille is not. The reason for this is to avoid potential speed wobble under full acceleration due to the motocross style handlebars atop high machined ergal risers causing the rider to sit more upright, resulting in less weight over the front wheel. The main difference is the lack of significant bodywork (fairings).

The base model Tuono (known as the Tuono Fighter in the US market for 2003 and as the RSV Tuono for the 2004-2005 models) and the high spec Tuono Factory all share the same frame-mounted bikini fairing and body covers, either in plastic for the base model or carbon fibre for the Factory models. The frame and swingarm of the 2003 Tuono (Tuono Fighter in the US market) was a light bronze color, whereas the 2004 and 2005 models sported a black frame and swingarm. This contrasted with the frames used on the RSV Mille which were a chrome finish for the base models and black for the Racing/Factory models. The Tuono base models feature an adjustable Sachs rear shock absorber and Showa front suspension.

The RSV Tuono uses the Austrian built BRP-Rotax V990 60° V-Twin engine which can also be found in numerous other Aprilia models. It sports dual overhead cams, double balance shafts, 4 valves per cylinder, electronic fuel injection, twin spark ignition and the same two-into-one exhaust as used on the RSV Mille. In the RSV Tuono, the V990 delivers 92 kW (125 PS; 123 hp) @ 9500 rpm and 10.3 kg⋅m (101 N⋅m; 75 lb⋅ft) @ 7250 rpm.

The RSV Tuono Factory is a high spec model based upon the Aprilia RSV Mille R. Compared to the standard RSV Tuono it has forged alloy wheels, gold anodized Öhlins Racing front forks, fully adjustable Öhlins Racing rear monoshock, a fully adjustable Öhlins Racing steering damper, radially mounted Brembo brake calipers and it extensively uses carbon fiber parts for weight reduction.

The 2nd generation Tuono, the Tuono 1000 R, is based upon the 2004 - 2009 Aprilia RSV1000R superbike. One technical difference between the Tuono 1000 R and the RSV1000R is that the latter has a rear shock with adjustable compression and rebound damping, as well as adjustable preload. The Tuono 1000 R only has adjustable preload and rebound damping. This makes the stock Tuono somewhat less usable as a track bike than the Mille. However, since the parts between the two are interchangeable and abundant this should not hinder anyone wanting to use the Tuono as a track bike from changing the rear shock.

Other differences are purely cosmetic and consist of the lack of a full fairing, a superbike handlebar instead of clip-ons and different paint schemes. Like the first generation Tuono, the Tuono 1000 R also employs a steering damper as standard.

The BRP-Rotax V990 60° V-Twin engine was upgraded significantly when compared to the first generation Tuono: different gear ratios (close ratio with longer first gear), larger throttle bodies, single spark plug, minor cosmetic changes and an increase in power output to 99.8 kW (135.7 PS; 133.8 hp) @ 9500 rpm.

The 2006 - 2010 Aprilia Tuono is offered in two versions: the Tuono 1000 R is the standard version, based upon the Aprilia RSV1000R. The Tuono 1000 R Factory is Aprilia"s flagship naked bike.

The Tuono 1000 R Factory comes with fully adjustable Öhlins Racing rear mono-shock and front forks, blue- or gold-anodized (depending on model year) forged aluminum wheels, a frame finished in gold, a paint job sporting the signature Aprilia Lion"s head on the fuel tank and the extensive use of carbon fiber parts. The use of forged aluminum wheels and carbon fiber explains the weight difference of 4 kg (9 lb) between the two versions in favor of the Factory model.

For the 2012 model year, the Tuono was completely redesigned along the lines of the RSV4 with a 1000cc 65° V4. As with that bike, it received Aprilia"s APRC (Aprilia Performance Ride Control) package with 8-position traction control, 3 position wheelie control, and 3 position launch control.

For the 2015 model year, the Tuono was updated with increasing the engine size to 1,077 cc (65.7 cu in). Now called the Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 RR and Öhlins-equipped Factory model with a claimed 175 hp (130 kW) @ 11,000 rpm and a wet weight of 472 lb (214 kg).

I say this a lot, but we really do live in the golden age of motorcycling. And also of television, and ice cream, and whatever other poisons of choice you may have. But staying on topic, the Aprilia RS 660 is a great example of just how good life can be.

You can’t ride a spec sheet, as I always say, but it helps see the Aprilia RS 660 in context. Here’s a condensed version of the spec sheet with a bit of contextual explanation.

As we mentioned in the introduction, when buying a bike, riders typically have had a choice of either high-spec components or a middleweight motorcycle. The Aprilia RS 660 gives us both. Happy days!

In motorcycles, every kilogram (or pound) counts in terms of how easy it feels under your seat and how confident you feel throwing it into corners. The lightness of the Aprilia RS 660 inspires a lot of that confidence.

On the road, the lightness and riding position make the Aprilia RS 660 very easy to ride. This includes for beginners, whether you live in the US and can ride anything as your first bike, or whether you have a restricted version as is available in the UK, Europe, and Australia/New Zealand.

As a middleweight engine, the RS 660’s parallel twin never produces gobloads of torque — but of what it does produce, it does from relatively low. So the Aprilia RS 660 is never struggling or choking.

That said, the engine does lack in low-end torque compared to entry-level middleweights like the Yamaha MT-07 or Suzuki SV650. This is one of the aspects in which riding the Aprilia RS 660 feels like a middleweight Ducati V-twin — it’s happy down low but it still likes to get up there in revs when you get the chance.

Composite torque charts of Aprilia RS 660 and Yamaha MT-07. Note: Data for this is from Cycle World/DynoJET from runs on different days under different conditions, and is intended to be for approximate comparison only.

Aprilia has done quite a lot to help their engine rev more feely and make that power. A few of these things are hollow camshafts, cylinders offset from the crankshaft to minimise internal friction, and oversquare pistons.

The Aprilia RS 660 geared quite aggressively, so you shift out of first gear just to get to 100 km/h (~60 mph). This would hurt your sprint times if you didn’t have that up and down quickshifter, which comes as standard on the RS 660.

Even the Yamaha YZF-R7, an obvious competitor for the Aprilia RS 660, only has ABS. No cornering function Not even ride modes! Not that they’re the most important thing in the world, but it’s a thing that the R7 doesn’t have.

The Ducati Supersport 950 S, a more expensive, more powerful, and generally more premium motorcycle than the Aprilia RS 660, doesn’t have cruise control (to the chagrin of many owners).

The Aprilia RS 660 comes standard with a quick shifter. You might almost expect this, but remember that on a (much more expensive) Ducati Supersport, for example, you have to buy the (significantly more expensive) S version for the quick shifter to be standard.

Note that early on in the days of the Aprilia RS 660 in 2021, there were some reports of a broken connecting rod in the crankshaft that sometimes broke, with 308 units recalled due to the possibility of it happening again (recall PA2ZZQ2107). There hasn’t been a recall since.

The Aprilia Tuareg also comes with a lot more options for adventure travel, like a center stand, rugged luggage, an even taller windscreen, and additional lights.

CFMOTO 700CL-X Sport: Yes, a bike by CFMOTO. Have a look here and prepare to be surprised by what a Chinese manufacturer is offering at a reasonable price in a presumed attempt to get market share. The CFMOTO 700CL-X Sport has a few components that are higher spec than the Aprilia (e.g. it has Brembo M50 brakes, and more adjustability in the suspension), but it’s not as powerful, the engine has a traditional 180-degree crank, and it doesn’t have cornering ABS via an IMU (but it does have cruise control).

“If you were to consider an amalgam of total mass, accessible and usable engine power, chassis response, cutting edge rider aid technologies and ergonomics as a form of holy grail, then Aprilia has designed and built an altar for you.”

To call the 2021 Aprilia RS 660 anything but a game changer is an understatement, even with a couple minor teething issues. In a traditionally budget-minded class, reflected in paired-down components, technology and performance compromises, the RS 660 is trailblazing its own path. In essence, it’s the sportbike we always needed — real-world ergonomics, an energetic parallel-twin producing useable power, a stellar chassis and a swath of top-shelf electronics.

The RS 660 is the child of Aprilia’s open-class superbike technical expertise combined with everyday functionality and comfort, making it an enticing option to the supersport-curious. Yet it’s wickedly entertaining and capable of educating even the most experienced riders. Think scaled-down RSV4 1100 Factory performance in an approachable package. It’s a fresh and unique take on the middleweight supersport segment. And it’s freakin’ awesome.

When Aprilia introduced the Tuono 660 in 2021, the new naked bike owed much of its form to the RS 660 sportbike, but with an upright handlebar, less bodywork, and some tweaks to the 659cc parallel-Twin for street duty. The new Factory variant ups the ante with a 5-horsepower boost, full adjustability for the KYB fork and an oil reservoir-equipped Sachs shock, and a lightweight lithium battery. The 2022 Aprilia Tuono 660 Factory will be available in a single-seat configuration with Factory Dark graphics. Pricing and availability are TBD.

An adventure bike that’s been teased for a while is the 2022 Aprilia Tuareg 660, which is powered by a liquid-cooled, 659cc parallel-Twin adapted from the RS 660 sportbike. It’s equipped with the APRC electronics suite, long-travel adjustable suspension, and 21-inch front/18-inch rear spoked wheels with tubeless tires. MSRP starts at $11,999.

Peak torque has increased to 133 lb-ft, up from 129, at 5,250 rpm. All models get a new 6-axis IMU; engine drag torque control (MSR); BMW Motorrad Dynamic ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment) “Next Generation”; “welcome,” “good-bye”, and “follow me home” light functions; an updated cornering LED headlight; a 10.25-inch high-definition TFT color display with integrated map navigation (via the BMW Motorrad Connected app) and Bluetooth connectivity.

The 2022 Indian Chief Bobber Dark Horse gets the larger, more powerful Thunderstroke 116 V-Twin, the 4-inch display with Ride Command, and standard ABS. Sixteen-inch wheels have chrome spokes and gloss black rims, and nearly everything gets a menacing, blacked-out look. The Chief Bobber Dark Horse comes in Black Smoke, Titanium Smoke, and Sagebrush Smoke, and pricing starts at $18,999.

The up-spec 2022 Indian FTR S features a Bluetooth ready 4.3-inch Ride Command touchscreen display, giving riders access to three selectable ride modes and IMU-supported rider aides like cornering ABS, traction control, wheelie control, rear-wheel lift mitigation, and stability control. Standard equipment includes a fast-charging USB port, an Akrapovič slip-on exhaust, and fully adjustable Sachs suspension. It’s available in Maroon Metallic (above) and White Smoke, and pricing starts at $14,999.

For touring riders who want more power, safety, and sophistication, the 2022 Indian Super Chief Limited features a quick-release windscreen, saddlebags, a touring seat with passenger pad, floorboards, and traditional pullback handlebars like the base-model Super Chief. The Limited adds the Thunderstroke 116 V-twin, standard ABS, and a 4-inch round display with Bluetooth-connected Ride Command. Chrome finishes and rich metallic paint make the Super Chief Limited extra special. It comes in Black Metallic, BlueSlate Metallic, and Maroon Metallic, and pricing starts at $20,999.

A popular middleweight sport-tourer since it was introduced in 2008, Kawasaki’s 649cc parallel-Twin-powered Versys 650 gets new traction control, refreshed styling with an adjustable windscreen and LED lighting, and a new TFT color display with Bluetooth connectivity. The 2022 Kawasaki Versys 650 is available in Metallic Spark Black/Metallic Flat Spark Black for $8,899 or Candy Lime Green/Metallic Flat Spark Black/Metallic Spark Black for $9,099. The 2022 Kawasaki Versys 650 LT with handguards and saddlebags is available in Metallic Spark Black/Metallic Flat Spark Black for $9,999.

The street-oriented 2022 KTM 1290 Super Adventure S has been updated with even more tech, comfort, and performance for the open road. Its engine is lighter, its chassis has been updated, and it gets new WP APEX Semi-Active Technology (SAT) suspension. It also gets radar-assisted adaptive cruise control (ACC) and a new 7-inch TFT display. MSRP is $19,499.

The 2022 KTM RC 390 gets new engine mapping and a revised airbox that helps its liquid-cooled, DOHC, 4-valve, 373cc Single make more torque.
