Forget any light and shadow issue: thanks to its high contrast 5’’ TFT display, in any situation reading data will never be this easy. Moreover, its aluminum body makes MXK10 a lightweight device and the racing inspired design will give your Ninja ZX-10R an even better and more aggressive look.

Walking around and taking a good look over a new bike is always the first thing I do once I get it to BikeReview HQ. Checking out the ZX-10R, I was undecided as to whether or not it beats the SE in looks or not. So I looked back on my old images and decided the new one definitely gets the nod, particularly with the TFT display and the new front-end. It looks a lot better in the flesh than images, too, and over the test period would prove to be a magnet wherever I parked up…

I fire the beast into life (it takes about five cranks, this doesn’t improve over the test), and it settles into a low, rough idle with a few exhaust leaks until the system heats up and expands. It reminds me of a real race exhaust system built to exact tolerances. As the engine warms, I familiarise myself with the new TFT dash and the switches, which are standard Kawasaki premium model in design and function. I select Road mode, reset trip B, adjust the mirrors and brake (clutch is not adjustable) and head off…

Riding the bike back to KMA, I realised that the 10R can be a daily ride and a track day weapon. My initial impression of it being an all-out track bike was proven wrong by the simple fact that I used the 10R as a daily ride for almost two weeks and loved every minute. The little touches like the easy to get to sidestand, the great headlights, the loud horn, the taller screen, the awesome TFT display (although no range remaining is annoying), and the looks of the bike – it is stunning, with the River Mark and neat graphics, all add to the ownership experience. If I was younger, I’d have one as my daily ride. In fact, when I think of it, I did have a ZX-10R when I was 35…

As a top-tier supersport, the Ninja ZX-10R comes equipped with Kawasaki’s full suite of electronic aids and niceties. The full colour TFT display can be poked and prodded to swap amongst pre-programmed rider modes or to customize one of your own. Once in the menus, you can tailor the power output (full, medium, low) and choose from 5 levels of traction control (or turn it off, should you wish).  Riding modes can be chosen on the fly and are activated by a closed throttle.

The IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) works on a 6-axis specification while the yaw rate is calculated by the ECU. Essentially the brain of the bike is working overtime below you while everything appears more serene on top with sensors picking up measurements of traction control, ABS, engine brake control and launch control. Cruise control is new for 2021 and operational from the left bar. Also new is the 4.3” TFT display; it was an absolutely necessary upgrade for this generation but still a little underwhelming. OK, I get the ethos of ‘if you don’t need it, you don’t get it’ and while the font and layout makes it very easy to read, I can’t help but think how dated it already looks compared to others.

A tremendous amount of effort has gone into making the R a much, much better bike than its predecessor and much of that transformation might not be immediately evident at first glance. It comes into a class laden with sophisticated competitors from Japan and Europe but as a pure rider’s bike, the ZX-10R is a real step up and offers performance and track-capability at a noticeably handy price. The engine pulls really well from lower revs thanks to those re-worked ratios, while the suspension and brakes work harmoniously, the chassis and ergonomics offer an aggressive yet manageable and rewarding experience too. It lacks the allure of some more glamorous rivals, weighs at least 5kg more than most and I’m not wild about the switchgear and TFT screen but overall, the Kawasaki packs a punch, is easy to ride, immensely stable, and extremely proficient on track and will be up there once again in race form challenging for the wins.

The AiM MXK10 is a plug & play dash display and data logger specific to Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R Generation 5. The dash is completely compatible with the original wiring and comes with a mounting bracket for hassle-free fitment.

The MXK10 features a high contrast 5"" display, allowing you to read your data on a crystal clear screen whatever the conditions. The dash has been designed to be lightweight and with added aluminium body parts it gives an awesome look.

The display is fully configurable and can show all the data you want to see. RPM, shift lights, high beams, direction arrows, engine problems, ABS, fuel flow level and alarms like water temperature, battery and oil pressure.

The MXK10 display is user-configurable and shows all the information you want to see. The dash is supplied with a GPS Module with a 50cm cable which provides accurate GPS lap timing and track mapping. With inbuilt track recognition software. When you switch your bike on near a track recorded in the database the GPS Module automatically recognises it, loads the start/finish coordinates and calculates lap times when those coordinates are crossed. If the tracks not on the database you can create and load them onto the database using Race Studio 3 software.

With Race Studio 3 you can create, modify, delete, import and export configurations with all channels, ECU drivers, Math channels, Display Pages, Digital outputs, Alarms, Shift Lights and all the expansions you need. You will also be able to manage the map of all your racing tracks and compare two laps watching the video recorded by SmartyCam HD cameras.
