Besides excellent cooling and superior performance, LCD Edge View is another spotlight of AORUS RTX 30 series graphics cards. LCD Edge View is a small LCD located on the top of the graphics card. What could users do with this small LCD? Let’s find it out.
LCD Edge View is a LCD located on the graphics card, you can use it todisplay GPU info including temperature, usage, clock speed, fan speed, VRAM usage, VRAM clock and total card power. All this information can be shown one by one or just certain ones on the LCD.
Besides that, there are three different displaying styles available and users could choose their ideal one. However, not just GPU info but FPS (Frame Per Second) in the game or other application could be displayed through LCD Edge View.
The LCD Edge View can also show customized content including text, pictures or even short GIF animations.Users could input the preferred text to the LCD, also set the font size, bold or italic. It also supports multi-language so users could input whatever type of text they want.
About the picture, LCD Edge View allows users to upload a JPEG file to it and AORUS RGB Fusion software will let users choose which region of the picture should be shown. The support of short GIF animations is the most interesting part.
Users can upload a short animation in terms of GIF to be shown on the LCD so they can easily build up a graphics card with their own style. All of the customizations above can be done via AORUS RGB Fusion software.
There’s something more interesting with LCD Edge View: The little CHIBI.CHIBI is a little falcon digitally living in the LCD Edge View and will grow up as more time users spend with their graphics card. Users could always check their little CHIBI through the LCD Edge View and watch it eat, sleep or fly around, which is quite interactive and interesting.
In conclusion, LCD Edge View can display a series of useful GPU information, customized text, pictures, and animations, allowing users to build up the graphics card with their own style. Users can also have more interaction with their card via the little CHIBI, the exclusive little digital falcon living inside the LCD Edge View, which brings more fun while playing with the graphics card.
We have something special for you! We’ve tested the largest GeForce RTX 3080, which is even equipped with its own display. And at least as interesting are also the results with Resizable BAR, which are making their debut in our GeForce graphics card tests, so sit back and get ready for it. Those increases and decreases in performance compared to Radeon are worth it.
With the RTX 3080 Xtreme 10G, we are starting to test Resizable BAR on GeForce as well. It is already mandatory due to the extensive support. Nevertheless, it makes sense to still maintain and expand the database of results without ReBAR. There are more or less two reasons for this.
One is that not all Ampere RTX graphics cards have supported ReBAR until the end of March and from previous experience with AMD we know that the performance evolves differently over time – significantly more than without ReBAR, where the progress is relatively negligible due to various updates. This means that the results measured with ReBAR today can differ significantly from repeated measurements, for example, after a month, which must be taken into account not only in ours, but also in any other tests.
And the second reason why not to leave standard measurements (i.e. with Resizable BAR off) is that the increase in performance may not always be progressive and may be descending. We’ve also noticed this in AMD’s graphics cards, which have been supporting ReBAR for longer. In short, it is also good to know about situations in which ReBAR is not currently suitable. Radeons with ReBAR have been tested across all available GPUs from the RX 6000 series, and the RTX 3080 will now have its premiere from the GeForce graphics. This is probably the most appropriate choice for a start due to its high popularity. We have this RTX 3080 in a non-traditional version from Gigabyte.
The graphics card has the Nvidia GA102 core (200-K1-A1) with 8704 shaders, 16 GB of GDDR6X memory, which is connected to a 320-bit bus. It is also worth emphasizing the specified boost clock – 1905 MHz. In practice, it will traditionally be more, we’ll see by how much. Detailed specifications of Aorus RTX 3080 Xtreme 10G can be found in the table below.
The graphics card is huge. It is not only long (319 mm), but mainly thick. Its thickness is 70 mm, but only a double-slot blanking plate is still used. The height of almost two slots corresponds to a large chin under the PCIe plate. In practice, this is a four-slot graphics card with a weight of almost two kilos (1,872 grams to be specific, ~4.1 lb).
The cooler is characterized by various elements that are supposed to contribute to the improvement of cooling. Each of the three fans is different. The front and rear have the same shape (with long curved dense blades), but different dimensions – the rear one has 110 mm, the front 95 mm. An interesting feature below these fans is the frame with high triangular protrusions. These should serve to optimally direct the air in front of the heatsink.
The accessories are quite austere, but collectors will be pleased with the Chibi mascot figure and a metal sticker. This luxury suitcase box does not hide anything else. Unfortunately, there is no support bracket that would lighten the load on the PCI Express slot either (although this is not a challenge for the armour plated ones) and at the same time keep the card in a horizontal position in accordance with aesthetic rules.
There is only minimal bending of the card, the massive backplate strengthens well. And it also engages in cooling. The backplate is made of aluminum and in place behind the VRM MOSFETs it is in contact with the PCB via a thermally conductive pad. On the other hand, it has a cutout for better heat dissipation from the radiator.
The RTX 3080 Xtreme 10G is attractive and rare especially thanks to its video output selection. There are three HDMI ports (2× 2.1 + 1× 2.0) and the same number of DisplayPorts (1.4a). You can only use four of the six available connectors at a time, but that is also very meaningful, and this configuration gives you more freedom than other cards. Some may prefer HDMI, which is usually limited to a single connector.
Gigabyte used the high profile of the card for mounting a 1.8″ display. It can display a variety of practical things such as clock speed, temperature or GPU usage, but you can also display any photo or GIF on it. Viewing angles are good, it’s an IPS panel. Still however, it is an LCD, so you will not miss the rectangular panel border because of imperfect black in the dark, but the backlight is pretty even.
We did not measure the image qualities of the display, but it’s going to be at least True Color. All customizations and content selection (for example, in the rotation of multiple pointers) can be set in the RGB Fusion 2.0 app. It is also used to work with the lighting provided by the RGB LED that is on the card from all sides. However, Gigabyte does not operate with it on too large of an area, and we can still talk about a fairly decent design.
To increase performance by enabling Resizable BAR, you need to update the supported BIOS (F6, F11 or F22). It’s easier and faster than with a motherboard. You can download the BIOS archive from the Gigabyte product pages and the whole update process starts and ends by running an .exe file. It launches a command prompt and loads a new BIOS into the card.
Keep in mind, however, that the card is equipped with two BIOSes, so you have two directories in the archive. One for “OC” mode and the other for “Silent”. Before the update, the physical BIOS switch on the card should be in the correct position (before starting the PC, during initialization). For which BIOS is which file is listed in the attached text document, which is also part of the archive.
It is noteworthy that the Silent BIOS also reduced the boost frequencies, from the original 1815 to 1770 MHz. 1905 MHz in OC mode remains intact. The reduction in clock speed (and with it the power draw limit) in the “quieter” BIOS suggests that Gigabyte wanted to reduce the cooling noise even more.
This is my seventh GeForce RTX 3080 review, this time from Colorful, one of the biggest players on the Chinese market. Their graphics cards have a long history of being just a little bit more over the top compared to others. The Colorful iGame GeForce RTX 3080 Vulcan OC is the company"s flagship for the RTX 3080 series. Besides the massive cooler, it offers a unique feature, a small LCD screen that lets you display vital stats of your graphics card and CPU.
Out of the box, the Vulcan OC runs at 1710 MHz rated boost, which matches the NVIDIA Founders Edition clocks exactly. I hear you ask why this card is called "OC" then. Well, I was a bit surprised at first, too. It seems the OC settings are activated only when you press the dual BIOS "Turbo" button near the rear I/O bracket. With the Turbo BIOS active, the card runs at 1800 MHz rated boost, which is higher than most other RTX 3080 custom designs. At the same time, the power limit is raised from 320 W to 370 W—this will make a big difference, having more impact than just the rated boost clock. The difference between the BIOSes is so big, I decided to fully test both to show proper product performance.
Averaged over our whole game testing suite at 4K resolution, the Vulcan OC with the default BIOS is 1% faster than the NVIDIA Founders Edition, which is not a whole lot. The Turbo BIOS works much better, running 3% faster than the default BIOS, which brings the total uplift against the FE to 4%. Albeit not a huge difference, it is still a decent increase for a RTX 3080 custom design. Compared to the RTX 2080 Ti, the card is 37% faster, a pretty impressive gap. The uplift against the RTX 2080 Super is almost 65%. AMD"s top dog, the Radeon RX 5700 XT, will only give you half (!) the FPS of the iGame RTX 3080. AMD is announcing new graphics cards soon, which are expected to change this situation, but I doubt they"ll match the RTX 3080. RTX 3090 is less than 10% faster at much higher cost—barely worth it.
If you are looking for a fluid 4K gaming experience, the RTX 3080 is the card you want. At lower resolutions, many games are CPU bottlenecked though, so the card won"t be able to play out its full potential. The RTX 3080 is also a good option for 1440p high refresh-rate gaming, but I definitely wouldn"t spend that much money just for Full HD 1080p gaming.
Visually, the iGame RTX 3080 Vulcan looks great because of a mix of gray, silver, and black paired with an edgy cooler shroud that"s not too distracting. The Colorful thermal solution achieves very low temperatures of 67°C with the default BIOS and 72°C with the Turbo BIOS—both lower than many competing cards. Fan noise levels are higher, though. With 35 dBA and 37 dBA, they are sitting right next to the Founders Edition"s 36 dBA. Given the low temperatures, I feel like Colorful could have used a slightly less aggressive fan curve. On the other hand, I hear a lot of gamers in the Asian markets favor low temperatures over fan noise, which could explain the fan settings. NVIDIA introduced idle fan stop on their Founders Edition cards with the GeForce RTX 30 series, which makes this capability a standard feature to have. The Colorful iGame RTX 3080 Vulcan will turn off its fans in idle, desktop work, Internet browsing, and light gaming for the perfect noise-free experience.
With the Vulcan, Colorful is including a small LCD monitor that"s attached to the top edge of the graphics card, capable of displaying various important statistics, like frequencies and temperatures. The iGame Center software is required to send those stats to the LCD, though. The colors of the panel are crisp and the animations smooth, much better than other solutions we"ve seen in the past. You may customize which sensor values are displayed, with how much delay between them and in which order. You may also choose between a "one value + chart" or "two values" display format, and can show off your own uploaded logo.
Power efficiency is comparable to the Founders Edition. Actually, it is a tiny bit better. This is the case with both the default and Turbo BIOS. While the default BIOS matches FE power consumption exactly, the Turbo BIOS is slightly more power hungry, but offers higher performance at the same time, which is a fair trade-off. Other vendors increase the voltage for their factory overclock or compromise on the VRM design, which negatively affects power efficiency, not a problem with the Colorful iGame RTX 3080 Vulcan OC.
Overclocking on our sample with the default BIOS worked similarly to other RTX 3080 cards: gains are limited because the board power limit will cap the frequencies you can achieve. That"s also a big drawback of the default BIOS. Its manual adjustment power limit is set to 340 W, which is 30 W below the Founders Edition—strange. With the Turbo BIOS on the other hand, OC yielded excellent results because it lets you set a 400 W power limit, which is higher than most other RTX 3080 cards I"ve tested. At 400 W, overclocking potential was the best of all RTX 3080 cards so far: 7.8%, which is really close to what the stock RTX 3090 can achieve, at much higher pricing. I still feel the Vulcan OC could handle much more power, its 22+4 VRM configuration is stronger than on any other card. Colorful maybe can release an optional XOC BIOS with an even higher power limit, similar to what EVGA has been doing with their FTW3.
Colorful is asking $880 for the iGame RTX 3080 Vulcan OC, which is a steep $180 premium over the Founders Edition. No doubt, the big cooler, much better VRM circuitry, and LCD display cost money, but I still find it too expensive. The factory overclock can justify a few percent, but not 20%. ASUS is asking $850 for the STRIX, EVGA wants $810 for the FTW3 Ultra, and the AORUS Master is $850. A price point much closer to $800 would definitely help the Vulcan, but at this time, all RTX 3080s everywhere are sold out, and people are willing to pay much much more, so my pricing considerations really don"t matter.

Nvidia is promising big things with its new generation of graphics cards. The GeForce RTX 3080 is supposed to deliver twice the performance of the RTX 2080 at the same price. It’s even supposed to surpass the RTX 2080 Ti, providing solid 4K gaming performance for much less than Nvidia’s last-generation cards cost. This is all while taking advantage of ray tracing and Nvidia’s special AI-powered DLSS tech that boosts frame rates while maintaining image quality. Nvidia had similar promises before for 4K gaming with the RTX 2080. But with the RTX 3080, it’s delivering on them.
The RTX 3080 is part of Nvidia’s 3000 series of graphics cards, all powered by the company’s new Ampere architecture. There’s the RTX 3070 (starting at $499), the RTX 3080 (starting at $699), and the RTX 3090 (starting at $1,499). You can’t preorder any of these latest cards, and the RTX 3080 will arrive in stores on September 17th, with the RTX 3090 following on September 24th. While the RTX 3070 doesn’t arrive until October 15th, it also promises performance that exceeds both the RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti.
I’ve spent the past week putting the RTX 3080 through its paces at both 4K and 1440p, and I’m impressed with what I’ve seen. 4K gaming arrived with the RTX 2080 Ti, but $1,199 was far beyond most people’s budgets. The RTX 3080 does the same and more at a much more affordable price point.
Nvidia could have stuck with the big changes it made to the RTX 2080 cooling, but it’s gone a step further with its hardware on the RTX 3080. The first noticeable change is that the dual-fan setup has shifted so there’s one fan on either side of the card. Nvidia is using a push-pull system here, with the bottom fan pulling (hopefully cool) air into the card, then exhausting the warm air on the opposite side close to your CPU cooler and rear case fan. A traditional blower cooler also exhausts the hot air out of the PCIe slot and thus out of your case entirely.
This creates a more optimal airflow, reducing GPU temperatures and delivering a quieter card. I didn’t hear any noticeable differences against the RTX 2080 that I’ve been comparing the RTX 3080 to this week, as both are quiet cards. There had been some concern that this cooling system could negatively affect CPU temperatures, but I didn’t observe any issues during my tests. It’s possible that, in some rigs, it could affect CPU temperatures, but I think for the vast majority of cases, it will be a non-issue.
The second major change to the RTX 3080 is the addition of a 12-pin single power connector, as opposed to the separate 6- and 8-pin or twin 8-pin connectors on prior cards. I like what Nvidia has done here, but the early implementation means you have to use an included adapter that’s ugly and awkward. You connect two 8-pin PCIe power connectors to it, and the adapter then dangles out of the side of the card. Thankfully, power supply vendors like Corsair are planning single cables that will plug directly into Nvidia’s new 12-pin connector. I’d highly recommend ordering one of these if you (like me) care about cable management. Third-party cards are sticking with the regular dual 8-pin connectors, too.
The third big change that might not be immediately noticeable is Nvidia’s switch to a new pennant-shaped board for the RTX 3080. Combined with the new cooling shroud, this pennant shape makes for a really good-looking graphics card. There are no visible screws, and even the regular FCC and regulatory notices have been moved to the output end of the card to keep its appearance clean.
Speaking of outputs, there’s a single HDMI 2.1 port and three DisplayPort 1.4a ports. Nvidia has dropped the USB-C VirtualLink port found on the RTX 2080, which never saw any real adoption for VR. The RTX 3080 LED also lights up in pure white now, instead of the green found on the 2080. There’s even a subtle white glow around part of the top fan. I’m impressed with this new design, and it looks great sitting in a case if you have a side window.
The only bad part of this new hardware is the power requirement. Nvidia is recommending at least a 750W power supply for the RTX 3080, as it can draw up to 320 watts by itself. That’s a 42 percent jump from the 225-watt draw with the RTX 2080, which is understandable for the performance improvement but also disappointing for its impact on the environment and electricity bills.
I’ve been testing the RTX 3080 on the same machine I used for the RTX 2080 review two years ago. While it doesn’t have the latest and greatest CPU, I found Microsoft Flight Simulator, which is incredibly CPU-intensive, was the only game that was difficult to test on this rig.
For 1440p tests, I hooked up the RTX 3080 to a 27-inch Asus ROG Swift PG279Q monitor. This monitor supports refresh rates up to 165Hz plus G-Sync, so it’s an ideal match for an RTX 3080 at 1440p resolution. I’ve also been testing 4K performance, which you can find below.
I’ve been playing a variety of AAA titles all week to get a feel for what the 3080 is like. I’ve also performed average frame rate testing and used built-in benchmarks across a variety of games, including Fortnite, Control, Death Stranding, Metro Exodus, Call of Duty: Warzone, and Microsoft Flight Simulator. All games were tested at max or ultra settings, and most regularly exceeded the 100fps average mark at 1440p.
Fortnitehit an average of 161fps with maxed-out settings, and even Warzone hit 116fps on average. Both of these games are competitive shooters where you’d typically lower settings to hit these types of averages on other cards, but the RTX 3080 was able to deliver a smooth high frame rate experience consistently.
Even when playing more demanding titles like Control or Metro Exodus, the RTX 3080 improved performance at 1440p by nearly 60 percent or more from the previous RTX 2080 card. That put Metro Exodus to a far more playable average of 57fps with the RTX 3080, compared to the 36fps average on the RTX 2080 at extreme settings.
Gaming on the RTX 3080 at 1440p meant I could easily take advantage of the higher refresh rates on the Asus ROG Swift PG279Q monitor; if I was willing to drop image quality just a little, I could get the full 165Hz. The RTX 3080 feels like a very comfortable option for 1440p, even for some of the most demanding AAA titles.
If you’re upgrading from a GTX 1080 or something older and thinking of moving from a 1080p monitor to 1440p, you won’t be disappointed with the RTX 3080 at all. If you’re aiming to be as competitive as possible and delving into the esports side of gaming, then a 1080p resolution monitor with the RTX 3080 would obviously provide even higher frame rates. For most people, though, the RTX 3080 provides solid headroom for a move to 1440p.
The RTX 2080 was supposed to deliver 4K gaming at a more affordable $699 price point, but it wasn’t able to handle 60fps or more in demanding games with all of the settings maxed out. That’s why I’ve focused the majority of my RTX 3080 testing on 4K, pairing the card with Acer’s 27-inch Nitro XV273K, a 4K monitor that offers up to 144Hz refresh rates, G-Sync, and even HDR support.
I’ve been truly amazed that I can run around in Call of Duty: Warzone with everything maxed out at 4K and still get 85fps on average. There were certainly times when action briefly dipped below 60fps, but this was rare and mostly when I was parachuting in rather than in combat situations.
The performance increase at 4K from the RTX 2080 to RTX 3080 is significant. In most games, it was 60 percent or more, transforming Shadow of the Tomb Raider from just 32fps on average on the RTX 2080 to 57fps on the RTX 3080.
Controlwas unplayable a lot of times with the RTX 2080 at max settings on 4K resolution, thanks to its physics-defying gameplay and the game’s demanding specs. Controlis very GPU-intensive and uses a variety of graphics techniques to produce some visually stunning gameplay. That’s why gameplay regularly dipped below 30fps on the older RTX 2080, adding horrible input lag to the fast-paced shooting scenes. But on the RTX 3080, it averaged 72fps, with only occasional dips below 60fps. It’s an 80 percent jump, which is staggeringly good.
I also saw huge improvements in Fortnite, with average frame rates jumping 85 percent from the RTX 2080 to the RTX 3080. You can run Fortnitewith maxed-out settings and still maintain 98fps on average. That’s an impressive jump over the 53fps average on the RTX 2080.
I wish I hadn’t borrowed a 4K monitor for the RTX 3080 testing because now I want to spend money and upgrade from the 1440p display I own. The level of performance and detail has genuinely left me impressed, even as someone who typically prefers the higher frame rates available at 1440p or 1080p for competitive shooters.
The only slight pause I have here is the 10GB of memory available on the RTX 3080. While Nvidia says the average game uses 4 to 6GB of memory at 4K at the moment, I do fear this will jump a lot closer to maxing out the RTX 3080 memory for future games if you want the very best settings. I might not normally have such a concern with a new card, but given the next-gen consoles are pushing 4K gaming, improved CPUs, and ray tracing, we’re bound to see game developers push recommended specs even further in the years ahead. Max settings and performance are always a delicate balance, but I would have loved to have seen 12GB here.
Nvidia says it’s using 10GB, as most games don’t need the additional memory right now, and the company had to get the right balance of extra memory and the pricing of the RTX 3080. It does leave the door very open for Nvidia to introduce an RTX 3080 Ti in the future with additional memory, particularly as the RTX 3090 will ship with 24GB of memory.
The RTX 3080 also doesn’t allow me to take full advantage of the 144Hz refresh rates on Acer’s XV273K at 4K, once again leaving the door open for a card with a little more performance to take us firmly into 4K gaming at even more impressive frame rates.
Still, 4K gaming is absolutely here at playable frame rates for a much more affordable price. That’s a big jump, and it will hopefully influence the price of 4K monitors to improve the affordability aspect even further. You had to pay $1,199 for just a graphics card to even get close to this level of performance with the RTX 2080 Ti, and the RTX 3080 offers impressive 4K performance for its $699 price point.
While the door is left open for something a little more powerful than the RTX 3080, Nvidia has some special tricks to improve performance and even image quality. When I originally reviewed the RTX 2080 two years ago, I wasn’t able to test ray tracing or DLSS, Nvidia’s AI super sampling technology. Back then, Nvidia was promising these tricks would eventually improve visual quality and frame rates, and add prettier cinematic effects in games. But there weren’t any games at the RTX 2080 launch to back up Nvidia’s claims, so they sounded like vague promises for the future.
I’m surprised at how good DLSS works and the performance benefits it provides. Every game implements it slightly differently, offering both performance modes and quality modes so you can opt for better frame rates over image quality. In Control, I was able to enable its ray-tracing mode to improve visuals while also enabling DLSS and maintaining the same frame rate I would with both options turned off. I found it incredibly difficult to notice any image quality reductions from DLSS in Control. You’d have to compare them side by side to really dig into the differences, as DLSS is just that good.
I enabled ray tracing in Call of Duty: Warzone and didn’t notice a significant performance hit. But I have to be honest: it was hard to spot the difference. In Control with just ray tracing enabled, the performance hit was more significant at 4K, rendering at 45fps on average and lots of dips below 30fps. In Metro Exodus, it made the game unplayable unless I enabled DLSS, too.
I saw similar results in Fortnite, which has only just implemented ray tracing and DLSS. The ray tracing in Fortnite offers a lot more obvious improvements, including shadows and reflections around trees and lakes and just a general layer of polish on top of the game. Fortnite looks a lot more alive with ray tracing on.
Unfortunately, the performance hit in Fortnite with ray tracing is significant if you max out all of the ray-traced effects. I went from 98fps on max settings all the way down to just 20fps with the maximum settings and maximum ray tracing. Even DLSS couldn’t help bring things up much further, improving the average frame rate to 39fps with ray tracing turned on.
DLSS without ray tracing offers a huge performance benefit in 4K for Fortnite, though. I tried the performance DLSS option, and I got around 135fps average frame rates, up from the already impressive 103fps average without DLSS.
DLSS was also able to bump Metro Exodus up to much better frame rates. Performance went from 35fps to 61fps with DLSS enabled, making the game a lot smoother to play. In Control, DLSS also pushed frame rates beyond 100fps on average to 114fps. That’s an impressive 58 percent jump.
Ray tracing still feels like it’s in its infancy, and I think game developers will really need to implement it across entire games instead of selectively to make a far bigger difference to the experience of a game. The performance hit is also often too big to enable ray tracing alone, but combined with DLSS, it makes it more of an option. DLSS is so good that it takes the huge performance hit from ray tracing and counteracts it to make games playable again.
Nvidia has also improved DLSS with a version 2.0, supported on its range of RTX cards, which makes it easier to train and should mean even more games support it in the future. Nvidia is promising improved visual quality and better performance gains for games that support DLSS 2.0, and the best thing is that games will be able to offer a variety of options for picking between performance and quality modes.
Nvidia’s big promise of 4K gaming at 60fps for the RTX 2080 didn’t hold up. The only viable option was the $1,199 RTX 2080 Ti, which was a serious investment for 4K gaming two years ago. The RTX 3080 will help transform the reality of 4K gaming on PC at a much more affordable $699 price point. Nvidia is also promising big jumps for performance with the RTX 3070 at just $499, so it certainly feels like 4K gaming on PC is about to be a lot more affordable even if the RTX 3070 means you need to lower some settings.
The RTX 3080 ushers in the next generation of 4K gaming, thanks to some raw horsepower and a lot of the promises that Nvidia made with the RTX 2080 finally starting to materialize. DLSS and ray tracing were merely promises of where the future of PC games would move two years ago. The next generation of consoles will also start to support ray tracing, meaning we’re bound to see even more games throughout 2021 and beyond that can add ray tracing and soften its blow with DLSS.
Nvidia tells me the RTX 3080 cards are in volume production with “great” yields, and that it’s “making them as fast as we can.” I still can’t help but feel there’s going to be a lot of pent up demand here, so the biggest problem might be actually buying one of these cards in the coming weeks.
The RTX 3080 will be will a staggering leap in performance if you’re upgrading from something like a GTX 1080, especially at 1440p or if you’re moving to 4K. That could tempt a whole host of people to upgrade, especially those who avoided the RTX 2000 series.
If you’re interested in making the jump to 1440p instead of 4K, then the RTX 3080 will give you so much headroom I don’t think you’ll need to upgrade your PC for years. On the 4K side, you’ll be upgrading to a card that provides solid frame rates with all of the settings maxed out without putting a hole in your wallet. 4K PC gaming is here, and it’s finally a lot more affordable.

Nvidia recently unveiled its new-generation of RTX 3000-series graphics cards, headed by the monstrously powerful RTX 3080 and RTX 3090. These cards pack new generation GPUs, alongside new memory, new RT cores, and new tensor cores, for absolutely staggering performance. All of it is rendered and transferred down the latest generations of high-end cabling: HDMI 2.1, and DisplayPort 1.4. Those high-speed ports are necessary too, as both the RTX 3080 can render games at 60 FPS at 4K resolution, even with ray tracing enabled, thanks to Nvidia"s advanced deep learning super sampling technology. The RTX 3090 goes even further, however, with Nvidia claiming that it can output a steady 60 frames per second at 8K resolution with ray tracing enabled.
Whether you"re targeting high-speed 4K gaming or even high-speed 8K gaming, though, you need the right cable for the job. HDMI 2.1 is the first HDMI generational leap in years to require a brand new cable to make the most of it. DisplayPort 1.4a is compatible with older standards, but that doesn"t mean it"s not worth using one of the latest and greatest DisplayPort cables you can get your hands on.

Nvidia claims that the RTX 3090 is so powerful that it has the ability to play a number of games at 8K without difficulty. They include Apex Legends, Destiny 2, Forza Horizon 4, Rocket League, World of Warcraft, and World of Tanks. All of those games can meet or exceed a comfortable 60 FPS at 8K, but the list of playable games is even greater when you factor in its deep learning super sampling technology.
With DLSS 2.0 enabled, you can even play Control, Death Stranding, and Wolfenstein: Youngblood at 8K resolution with a 3090 and hit near or above 60 FPS on average. These are not low-intensity indie games with ray tracing enabled, so that is an especially grand achievement, even for such a monstrously powerful card.
HDMI 2.1 is also the port you"ll want to make use of it when it comes to sharing 8K footage. The RTX 3090 is capable of recording 8K gaming footage and converting it for streaming to your followers, and crucially, do it over a single cable. Where before, capturing 8K footage and sending it to a compatible display needed multiple connections and a professional capture card, the RTX 3090 does away with all of those unneeded extras. It provides high-quality 8K gaming ability alongside seamless capture and streaming technology.
Where the RTX 3090"s DisplayPort 1.4a connectors may come in handy, is with gaming at ultra-high frame rates. All of that RTX 3090 power is just as good at rendering lower intensity games at incredible frame rates as it is at powering AAA games at unheard of resolutions.
The new Asus display also supports Nvidia"s Reflex technology, so those using RTX 3000 GPUs can unlock even lower system latency. In some cases, Nvidia has shown that a 360Hz monitor, combined with an RTX 3000 graphics card with Reflex turned on, can cut your system latency by up to 40 milliseconds, which in the most competitive of games can make all the difference.
DisplayPort 1.4a is more than capable of handling such high-speed connections, making it a great option for a second monitor designed with high-speed gaming in mind, while the main HDMI 2.1 connector is used for higher resolution 4K and 8K gaming.
The Nvidia RTX 3080 is a massive leap in performance over its predecessors. It not only surpasses its counterpart in the Turing generation but strides over the last-generation flagship, the RTX 2080 Ti too, offering as much as a 30 percent performance uplift over that monstrously capable GPU.
The real benefit of such a powerful graphics card, though, is in 4K gaming. That"s where HDMI 2.1 really comes into its own. With the full 12Gbps per lane (for a total of 48Gbps total bandwidth) the HDMI 2.1 connection on the RTX 3080 is able to handle up to 144 frames per second at 4K, and with display stream compression (DSC), even up to 240Hz – although the game would need to be quite lightweight for even the 3080 to manage that.

Nvidia’s monstrous GeForce RTX 3080 graphics card launched over a year ago, but it’s still damned near impossible to get your hands on one if you don’t feel like paying a just-as-monstrous markup on Ebay. But soon, you’ll be able to tap the GPU’s fearsome firepower for roughly the cost of a Netflix subscription, as Nvidia is bringing the GeForce RTX 3080 to its GeForce Now cloud streaming service, along with a juicy 1440p, 120Hz gaming option.
It’s a huge level-up for GeForce Now, cementing it as one of the best options for PC gaming during the never-ending GPU shortage. If you’re looking to get into desktop gaming for the first time, or if your current graphics card dies and you don’t want to spend $1,500 to $2,000 on an RTX 3080 of your own on the street, GeForce Now can keep you playing at a high level until the madness ends (at least assuming your internet is up to snuff). And yes, that includes cutting-edge, real-time ray tracing and Nvidia DLSS capabilities.
Nvidia needed to upgrade its servers to make such a ferocious option possible. The company’s new GeForce Now “Superpods” double up on available CPU cores and memory bandwidth in addition to wielding the crucial GPUs themselves—which aren’t truly RTX 3080 GPUs, but a similarly configured die based on the same underlying GA102 “Ampere” GPU. One key difference? The Superpod 3080s come with 24GB of VRAM, compared to the 10GB of GDDR6X found in the proper graphics cards.
Each virtual RTX 3080 PC comes equipped with an 8-core, 16-thread AMD Threadripper CPU, 28GB of DDR4-3200 memory, and a blazing-fast PCIe 4.0 SSD. So yeah, it’ll be able to handle any game you throw at it without breaking a sweat.
Nvidia is rolling out new display support options that put the heavier firepower to good use. Standard GeForce Now streams are limited to 60 frames per second at 1080p resolution, but if you pony up for an RTX 3080 subscription, you’ll be able to stream at up to 1440p resolution and 120Hz. If you have a phone with a 120Hz screen, that’s supported at the full refresh rate as well, though mobile access defaults to 720p resolution to avoid text elements being rendered unreadable on such tiny screens. (You can also manually enable 1080p resolution on a phone.) And if you’re an Nvidia Shield TV owner, you’ll be able to play HDR games at 4K/60, with support for additional devices expected in the future.
Playing at such high framerates should hopefully alleviate some of the latency issues that sometimes pop up with cloud gaming services, as highlighted by when my colleague Ben Patterson dropped GFN for a dusty PlayStation 4 to play Destiny 2. In fact, the Nvidia graphic above deals with that very issue in that very game, and how latency should be much improved when it’s running at 120 frames per second from a remote RTX 3080.
Nvidia is also swiping a page from its G-Sync experience to offer an adaptive sync display option to all GFN users to increase gameplay smoothness, regardless of what type of monitor you’re using. It doesn’t work quite the same as G-Sync though; while G-Sync and other adaptive sync monitors smooth things out by matching your display speed to your GPU’s output, GeForce Now’s new adaptive sync technology matches the output of the server frame captures with your client’s frame displays at either 60Hz or 120Hz. Cloud adaptive sync sounds exciting on paper, but the proof will be in the pudding when GeForce Now’s RTX 3080s fire up.
Subscribing to the RTX 3080 tier unlocks more benefits, too. While the free and standard tiers of GeForce Now handle overcapacity by dropping players into a queue system, Nvidia cloud VP Phil Eisler says “no wait is the goal” for RTX 3080 subscribers. While he acknowledged that customers might see the occasional short weight—for example, when a hot new online game launches—the company will actively manage the number of RTX 3080 subscriptions and virtual PCs available.
Unlike the other tiers, you won’t bump down to a lower-spec’d virtual PC if you’re playing a lesser-powered game. If you’re paying for an RTX 3080 in the cloud, you’ll always be playing on an RTX 3080 in the cloud. You’ll also unlock longer eight-hour-straight gaming sessions, as well as the ability to save your graphics settings across sessions, rather than defaulting to an Nvidia-recommended configuration. Eisler said that latter benefit is a common request from users. It’s good to see Nvidia listen, though it’s a bummer that the capability is locked to the priciest subscription tier alone.
Now for the pricing. While the free tier remains intact with unlimited one hour session durations, complete with full access to your compatible PC library and over 70 free-to-play games, pricing for the premium tiers have crept upwards since GeForce Now launched a few years back. Earlier this year, pricing for Priority access doubled to $10 per month or $100 per year. That’s staying the same under Nvidia’s new plans, although the company is only offering six-month plans for $50 now. (Month-to-month pricing was not disclosed.) Paying for that juicy RTX 3080 subscription costs significantly more, at $100 for six months.
That breaks down to $16.66 per month—roughly splitting the difference between a standard and premium Netflix plan. A figure like that may seem high on the surface, but it feels like a fair price for unlimited access to a high-powered RTX 3080 rig during a time when finding graphics cards is all but impossible and actual 3080s are going for north of $1,500 on the streets. That $16 per month could help you keep on gaming until the GPU shortage subsides, and with some kick-ass firepower at your fingertips too.
Preorders for GeForce Now’s new RTX 3080 plans start today in North America, with availability for other regions opening in a week. You’ll be able to start playing on a cloud 3080 sometime in November.
