When in April of 2019 my carrier (Bell Canada) shut down their CDMA network I had no choice but to get a new phone. Due to my complete lack of enthusiasm for touch screens I decided to get another BBOS BlackBerry as a primary phone, BB Classic as a backup (in case BIS or 3G network gets shut down as well), and an Android phone to be used only with apps from financial institutions (connected through mobile hotspot to the primary phone).

1) Brand new BBOS BlackBerries are easily available on Amazon and Ebay. You need to look for a phone which is "new, unlocked, in original packaging". From my experience "open box" items are ok as well, anything "open box" I have got so far was indeed brand new, just the box wasn"t sealed.

Below is a summary of prices (taxes and shipping included) and basic specifications of three devices. The list is sorted by the phone"s release date and includes Bold 9900, Curve 9320 and BB 9720. Bold 9900 seems to be the most popular BBOS phone still used in 2019, Curve 9320 is the last Curve and BB 9720 is the last Bold (although it"s officially just called BlackBerry 9720). BB 9720 is also the last BBOS device, it was released after BlackBerry Q10 and Z10. Curve 9320 and BB 9720 share the same battery, which has higher capacity than the battery of Bold 9900.

2) When shopping around for a new BBOS device please keep in mind that some models have two versions supporting different UMTS frequency bands (as shown above). The bands supported by your carrier can be checked on FrequencyCheck"s website:

4) Once you have the phone delivered it might be necessary to wipe the old OS and install the latest one available. This is not always the case. I bought one BB 9720 with OS 7.1.0.1121 (bundle 3008) already installed, so the bundle version was higher than 2994 indicated in CrackBerry subforum.

Anyone familiar with Research In Motion knows that the people behind BlackBerry have been busy working on the latest version of their OS - BlackBerry 10 - for the better part of a year now. And while RIM promise that BB10 will be their ticket back into contention, it"s been quite a while for them without a new release.

While the BlackBerry Curve is not a part of the BB10, it represents what got RIM into the game at all: a compact QWERTY messenger with to-the-point functionality and mature design. We"re as curious as you to see what RIM have been able to do with their Curve lineup over the past half year.

With the Curve 9320, RIM is looking to hold the fort while it gets its ducks in a row for the release of the BB10 lineup. In this case, holding the fort essentially means releasing a device with toned-down specs, which may still entice loyal users and stem the tide of their plummeting market share, if only a little.

Nonetheless, the Curve 9320 will find support amidst an (albeit small) group of diehard BlackBerry supporters who are looking for a familiar interface and reasonable performance without breaking the bank.

An unannounced BlackBerry Curve 9320 has got leaked in a couple of hands-on pictures. The 9320 is an entry level device which is possibly planned to boost the sales of falling RIM.

According to  BGR India, the Curve 9320 is an all plastic device but with a great built so it feel nice to hold the device and also its neither too small and not so large too. The send/menu/end/back buttons are raised for easy access, with a dedicated ‘BBM button’ on the left for quick access to the most widely used service.

Other specs of the 9320 Curve include a 2.44 inch display with resolution of 320 x 240, a 3.2 MP fixed focus camera at the rear. There’s a 512 MB RAM and ROM, 3G radio, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and FM Radio on the Curve. It will run on the BlackBerry 7.1 OS and is expected to arrive latest by April. Going by the pricing, the 9320 should be arriving with a price tag of Rs. 12,000 or so which is a nice buy given the features of the device and built quality.

RIM (Research in Motion) announced the BlackBerry Curve 9320 in early May that launched in India at the end of May. This is the 3G version of the Curve 9220 that we reviewed in April. It has similar features as the Curve 9220, in addition it comes with 3G support and a better 3.2MP camera with flash. Let’s get into the detailed review.

The phone 2.44-inch TFT display with 320×240 pixel resolution with 164 ppi. It is good but not impressive, they could have provided at least a 480 x 360 pixel resolution display with 246 ppi in the Curve 9360, that costs around 18k in the market. The display is prone to scratches, so better get a screen protector as soon as you get the device. The earpiece is at the top with notification LED next to it and a BlackBerry branding next to it.

There are keys for Dialer, Menu, Back and End / Power with the Trackpad in the middle. The 35 – key QWERTY keyboard is comfortable to type and it is backlit. There is a microphone and a loud speaker at the bottom.

The BlackBerry Curve 9320 runs on the latest BlackBerry OS 7.1 similar to 9220. This brings the most expected Wi-Fi Hotspot feature. The home screen looks the same with the shortcuts at the bottom and a navigation bar above that which you can swipe to access frequent apps, downloads, Media and Favorites.

There are notification icons at the top for battery and wireless indicators. The notification icon is below that notifies e-mails, twitter, Facebook or other notifications. You can press and hold the BlackBerry key to access recent apps or just press it to manage panels, add a folder, change home screen preferences which has options to change the wallpaper, set number of icon rows (max 2), or change downloads folder.

There are the usual utility apps such as Calendar, MemoPad note taking app,Tasks, Calculator,  Documents to Go to view documents, Files (file manager), Voice dialing, Voice Notes, Voice Notes recorder, Password Keeper and BlackBerry protect.

Other apps include, Facebook, Twitter, Social Feeds with both twitter and Facebook, Maps, YouTube and Games like BrickBreaker and Word Mole. There are IM apps such as Live Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger and GTalk. You can always download more apps from the BlackBerry World App.

The Music Player can play WMA, MP3, FLAC, OGG, AAC, AMR, WAV, MID formats and video formats such as MP4, M4A, 3GP, 3GP2, M4V, AVI, ASF, WMV. There are several music player options such as shuffle, repeat etc. You can use the button between the volume rocker to pause / resume the song. There is equalizer and bass booster to enhance the audio. The loud speaker is quite loud and offers optimal audio output. The FM Radio has RDS and auto scan option.

The messaging part include the universal message box for text messages, notifications and e-mail. You can press and hold the trackpad to view more options in a message. There is the BBM (BlackBerry Messenger) which is easily accessible using the hardware BBM button on the right side of the device. The new BBM integrated apps feature lets you connect the Apps to BBM so that you can share the Twitter status, Foursquare checks etc. with your friends on BBM and also let others view your apps and download them from you BBM profile.

This tiny device is definitely powerful with the 806 MHz processor. The 512MB RAM makes you multitask easily with quite a number of apps running in the background. 512MB internal memory with an optional micro SD card expansion slot is a plus. The 1450 mAh battery lasts for 2 complete days, with Always on Push email on EDGE, few hours of Music, FM Radio, few calls and messaging. If you are on 3G, then it should last more than a day. The camera is better than the one in 9220 but the LED flash could have been better.  The only problem with the device is the low resolution qVGA display at 164 ppi. At a price of about Rs. 15500, this is definitely a good entry level 3G BlackBerry phone.

Being a big fan of BB, I purchased a BB curve 9320 few months ago. Initially, performance has been upto the mark except some battery backup issues, but later it started creating lot of issues- while using the phone it will get re-started/switched off frequently. Many times during call, it will stop working automatically. Handset got serviced three times under warranty period but the issue has not been fixed and more embracing thing is that even after replacing the battery, problem remains the same. Planning for one more round of service. During my first visit to redington service center guy in B"lore demanded Rs. 200/- for data backup service, but no data has been got stored in the memory device. Second time, the service guy advised to change the battery from the basement shop run by the service center guy. Rs 2300/- has been charged for a battery replacement and problem still exists as it is. Good luck to BB. Cheers, Sumesh.(read more)

Research In Motion today added the BlackBerry Curve 9320 to its entry-level range of smartphones. It is a compact monoblock-style device with a full backlit QWERTY keyboard and a 2.44-inch non-touch display with 320 x 240 resolution. The 9320 runs BlackBerry OS 7.1 and features a dedicated hardware button for its popular BlackBerry Messenger service. Other features include a 3.2-megapixel camera with video capture; Wifi, GPS, Bluetooth, and FM radios; 512MB of on-board storage and support for 32GB microSD cards. Though no U.S. carriers have announced plans to sell the 9320, it supports the 2G/3G networks of both AT&T and T-Mobile.

Love the form factor of BB but, BBM popular? I don"t even know anyone who has a BB anymore. Anyway, RIM still playing down specs, I see. Is this a software issue or what? 512MB of on board storage and you probably still can"t install apps on the microSD card. Come on RIM, you can do better.
