LG.Philips LCD Co. Ltd. on Friday officially opened what it claims is the world"s largest LCD (liquid crystal display) manufacturing facility. The new plant could help curb an LCD price rise or even bring down prices.
The Kumi, South Korea, factory went online earlier this year and produces 15-inch LCDs for desktop and notebook computers, as well as 18-inch displays for desktop use and larger LCD TVs, Koninklijke Philips Electronics NV said in a statement. LG.Philips LCD is a joint venture between Philips and LG Electronics Co. Ltd.
The factory uses large 1000 millimeter by 1200 millimeter glass substrates and currently produces about 30,000 sheets a month. That should double to 60,000 by year end, when full production capacity is reached, Philips spokesman Jeremy Cohen said.
LCDs are in short supply. Earlier this week Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. said that global demand currently outstrips supply by about 4 million units. Both Samsung and LG.Philips said LCD prices could go up due to the shortage. However, both also said they expect shortages to be eased and prices to creep lower when new manufacturing facilities go online.
In 2005, TPV already acquired parts of the Philips monitor business and in 2008 the two companies reached a brand-licensing agreement for IT displays and public signage. By combining the Philips brand promise with TPV’s manufacturing expertise in displays, MMD uses a fast and focused approach to bringing innovative products to market.
The factory in Kobierzyce, near Wroclaw, manufactures LCD modules for use in flat-panel televisions. An LCD module is the most expensive part of a flat-panel TV set and combines the display panel with a backlight, frame and associated electronics. Manufacturers add a few additional circuit boards, power supply and case to produce a finished TV set.
The Polish plant will mainly make modules for TV sets with screen sizes of 32 inches and above. The modules will likely be used in sets produced by several major consumer electronics brands, all of which have factories nearby. LG Electronics has a factory close to the plant and Toshiba, which owns a 19.9% stake in the module factory, is in the process of building a factory in the area.
Mass production at the Polish plant has begun with 3 million modules per year and LG.Philips LCD is targeting expanding this to 11 million modules per year by 2011.
