The IIO ADC driver for the Beaglebone does not add /sysfs entries and the /dev/iio:deviceX entries are slightly broken. This project will involve patchwork for the ADC drivers. After that, an hwmon driver will be developed for power measurement using the 7th ADC channel connected to the shunt register. Community members report touch screen drivers clashing with the free ADC channels. This will be investigated and fixed. If you want to connect via DSS, you"ll need to level-shift the VSYNC, HSYNC, DOTCLOCK and ENABLE pins, the 24 color pins, (R0-7, G0-7, B-07); those will be connected to the corresponding pins at the BeagleBone. And the CS, SDI, SDO and SCL pins for initialization; those would be connected to CS, MOSI, MISO and CLK of an SPI port. To initialize the display you"ll have to output the init sequence that the display manufacturer dictates (you"ll have to look at their website or ask them for it). You"ll also need to read the display spec for other requirements and mode programming pins, and for instructions on how to drive the backlight.

The BeagleBone Black is a great development platform. In contrast to the Raspberry PI it’s a solid hardware design without any major bugs. For a reasonable price you get some really nice hardware specs: 512MiB RAM, 1GHz AM335x ARM with an FP accelerator, 4GiB on-board flash AND and external SDcard slot, Ethernet, USB-Host, HDMI, 2 on-board programmable microprocessors (the PRUs) and last but definitely not least: 69 digital GPIO pins and 7 analog inputs to an 12bit ADC.

In fact, the BeagleBone people make it really easy on their users, by letting you control everything via the devices webserver using their JavaScript extension “BoneScript”.

So, when you now take a look at Table 12 and 13 of the BeagleBoneBlack SRM and read that e.g. Pin P8_3 on the expansion header is routed to gpio1[6] inside the chip, it’s easy to calculate that in Linux you see this as gpio/gpio38/ since 38=1*32+6.

Most pins on the BeagleBone are multi-purpose. They can be routed (muxed) to different modules inside the AM335x chip. If you’ve already looked at Table 12 and 13 of the BeagleBoneBlack SRM you’ve seen that each pin can have one of 8 different functions, only only of those is GPIO: Mode 0x7.

To make it really easy I’ve cobbled together a Device-Tree Overlay Generator for the BeagleBone. First however, let’s have a look at some of the Device Tree Overlays which the BeagleBone Black shipped with: PWM-Overlays.

Using cape_enable=capemgr.enable_partno= you can tell the kernel to load any overlay found in /lib/firmware While cape_disable=capemgr.disable_partno= keeps the kernel from loading any part that was originally specified in dtbs/am335x-boneblack.dtb Some Overlays or functions you cannot unload once they are in the Device-Tree. You have to keep them from loading, in precisely that manner.

The command dtc used here is the Device-Tree Compiler. It’s pre-installed on the BeagleBone and allows you to compile the text-version of a Device-Tree to the binary format used by the kernel and vice versa. Read the man-page for more information.

Interestingly, if you check the LCD drivers you will find that for small LCD screens, most of those drivers come from Nokia[or at the very least are based off Nokia drivers].

So no, it is not "the community" that is expected to support things "for free".  How it works is that Nokia, a cell phone manufacturer, decides to use a Texas Instruments processor in a cell phone.  They decide to use a specific model of LCD screen.   They pay developers to create an LCD driver for a Texas Instruments supported linux kernel.  If they find a bug in the TI LCD interface, they contact TI and TI works with them to fix it.  Once they have the TI supported kernel working, they then try to use the same driver in the latest version of Android.  If it doesn"t work, their developers have to figure out what changes were made that broke something, and then they fix it.  Considering that their going to order 100,000+ TI processors, they probably pay TI for support so their developers and TI"s developers work on the driver.

Please note that by default the beagleboard.org Debian images come with an older kernel. At least it looks like the 4.14-ti kernel build config does enable FBTFT as a module. So if you"re really lucky it might even work out of the box. Though I"d be prepared to rebuild the kernel.
