SHANGHAI/HONG KONG, Dec 5 (Reuters) - Investors piling into China"s tourism, catering and beverage stocks as Beijing eases strict COVID-19 curbs are also keeping an eye on the exits, factoring in risks of a surge in infections early next year that could hit consumption and production.

Many investors say that stocks of drugmakers and medical equipment companies, however, will likely get a more lasting lift from China"s bumpy journey towards an eventual economic opening.

China"s stocks (.SSEC) and currency have jumped and global banks have turned more bullish on its prospects, as Beijing moved towards a more targeted zero-COVID policy while reducing virus testing and quarantines, after it was confronted by widespread anti-lockdown protests.

"After curbs are relaxed, China could experience the impact from surging virus cases, along with rising deaths, potentially hitting the economy," the brokerage said.

WASHINGTON, May 26 (Reuters) - Republican senators want to bar U.S. app stores including Apple and Google from hosting apps that allow payments to be made with China"s digital currency, amid fears the payment system could allow Beijing to spy on Americans.

According to Cotton"s office, digital yuan could provide the Chinese government with "real-time visibility into all transactions on the network, posing privacy and security concerns for American persons who join this network."

The Center for a New American Security, a Washington, D.C.-based think tank, said in a January 2021 report that China"s digital currency and electronic payments system was "likely to be a boon for CCP surveillance in the economy and for government interference in the lives of Chinese citizens," noting that "transactions will contain precise data about users and their financial activity."

The move comes after WeChat, a messaging and payment application owned by China"s Tencent with over 1.2 billion users, announced it would begin supporting the currency earlier this year. Alipay, the hugely popular payments app owned by Jack Ma"s Ant Group, also accepts the digital currency. Both apps are available in the Apple and Google App stores.

While stopping potential national security threats related to China is a rare point of bipartisan agreement in the deeply divided U.S. Congress, prospects for the bill"s passage ahead of midterm elections are uncertain.

Despite a dramatic deceleration caused by the coronavirus pandemic and ensuing recession, China’s total ad spending will remain in positive territory in 2020, with 0.4% growth. This makes it the only national market we cover that will see net growth this year. Digital ad spending in China will fare better, with 5.0% growth.

Although we estimate that China will see $5.73 billion less new spending on digital ads this year than anticipated, its $75.33 billion total will still easily rank China as the second-largest market worldwide for digital advertising. Overall ad spend will total $105.25 billion, which is $8.42 billion less than expected.

China’s total ad spending on digital and traditional advertising will exceed Western Europe’s combined spending for the first time ever this year. By 2024, China will shoot past the $150 billion mark, far exceeding Western Europe’s combined total at that point ($127.90 billion), but still dramatically trailing overall ad spending in the US.

We forecast that 62.0% of China’s digital advertising will go to display this year, and 35.4% to search. Concurrently, display advertising will grow by 6.6%, while search is expected to grow more slowly, at 3.5%. Video ad spending will grow by only 1.5% in 2020, a huge decline from the standout figures of recent years.

Flat-panel displays are thin panels of glass or plastic used for electronically displaying text, images, or video. Liquid crystal displays (LCD), OLED (organic light emitting diode) and microLED displays are not quite the same; since LCD uses a liquid crystal that reacts to an electric current blocking light or allowing it to pass through the panel, whereas OLED/microLED displays consist of electroluminescent organic/inorganic materials that generate light when a current is passed through the material. LCD, OLED and microLED displays are driven using LTPS, IGZO, LTPO, and A-Si TFT transistor technologies as their backplane using ITO to supply current to the transistors and in turn to the liquid crystal or electroluminescent material. Segment and passive OLED and LCD displays do not use a backplane but use indium tin oxide (ITO), a transparent conductive material, to pass current to the electroluminescent material or liquid crystal. In LCDs, there is an even layer of liquid crystal throughout the panel whereas an OLED display has the electroluminescent material only where it is meant to light up. OLEDs, LCDs and microLEDs can be made flexible and transparent, but LCDs require a backlight because they cannot emit light on their own like OLEDs and microLEDs.

Liquid-crystal display (or LCD) is a thin, flat panel used for electronically displaying information such as text, images, and moving pictures. They are usually made of glass but they can also be made out of plastic. Some manufacturers make transparent LCD panels and special sequential color segment LCDs that have higher than usual refresh rates and an RGB backlight. LCDs are made in a glass substrate. For OLED, the substrate can also be plastic. The size of the substrates are specified in generations, with each generation using a larger substrate. For example, a 4th generation substrate is larger in size than a 3rd generation substrate. A larger substrate allows for more panels to be cut from a single substrate, or for larger panels to be made, akin to increasing wafer sizes in the semiconductor industry.
