In this Arduino touch screen tutorial we will learn how to use TFT LCD Touch Screen with Arduino. You can watch the following video or read the written tutorial below.

For this tutorial I composed three examples. The first example is distance measurement using ultrasonic sensor. The output from the sensor, or the distance is printed on the screen and using the touch screen we can select the units, either centimeters or inches.

The third example is a game. Actually it’s a replica of the popular Flappy Bird game for smartphones. We can play the game using the push button or even using the touch screen itself.

As an example I am using a 3.2” TFT Touch Screen in a combination with a TFT LCD Arduino Mega Shield. We need a shield because the TFT Touch screen works at 3.3V and the Arduino Mega outputs are 5 V. For the first example I have the HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor, then for the second example an RGB LED with three resistors and a push button for the game example. Also I had to make a custom made pin header like this, by soldering pin headers and bend on of them so I could insert them in between the Arduino Board and the TFT Shield.

Here’s the circuit schematic. We will use the GND pin, the digital pins from 8 to 13, as well as the pin number 14. As the 5V pins are already used by the TFT Screen I will use the pin number 13 as VCC, by setting it right away high in the setup section of code.

I will use the UTFT and URTouch libraries made by Henning Karlsen. Here I would like to say thanks to him for the incredible work he has done. The libraries enable really easy use of the TFT Screens, and they work with many different TFT screens sizes, shields and controllers. You can download these libraries from his website, RinkyDinkElectronics.com and also find a lot of demo examples and detailed documentation of how to use them.

After we include the libraries we need to create UTFT and URTouch objects. The parameters of these objects depends on the model of the TFT Screen and Shield and these details can be also found in the documentation of the libraries.

Next we need to define the fonts that are coming with the libraries and also define some variables needed for the program. In the setup section we need to initiate the screen and the touch, define the pin modes for the connected sensor, the led and the button, and initially call the drawHomeSreen() custom function, which will draw the home screen of the program.

So now I will explain how we can make the home screen of the program. With the setBackColor() function we need to set the background color of the text, black one in our case. Then we need to set the color to white, set the big font and using the print() function, we will print the string “Arduino TFT Tutorial” at the center of the screen and 10 pixels  down the Y – Axis of the screen. Next we will set the color to red and draw the red line below the text. After that we need to set the color back to white, and print the two other strings, “by HowToMechatronics.com” using the small font and “Select Example” using the big font.

Now we need to make the buttons functional so that when we press them they would send us to the appropriate example. In the setup section we set the character ‘0’ to the currentPage variable, which will indicate that we are at the home screen. So if that’s true, and if we press on the screen this if statement would become true and using these lines here we will get the X and Y coordinates where the screen has been pressed. If that’s the area that covers the first button we will call the drawDistanceSensor() custom function which will activate the distance sensor example. Also we will set the character ‘1’ to the variable currentPage which will indicate that we are at the first example. The drawFrame() custom function is used for highlighting the button when it’s pressed. The same procedure goes for the two other buttons.

So the drawDistanceSensor() custom function needs to be called only once when the button is pressed in order to draw all the graphics of this example in similar way as we described for the home screen. However, the getDistance() custom function needs to be called repeatedly in order to print the latest results of the distance measured by the sensor.

Ok next is the RGB LED Control example. If we press the second button, the drawLedControl() custom function will be called only once for drawing the graphic of that example and the setLedColor() custom function will be repeatedly called. In this function we use the touch screen to set the values of the 3 sliders from 0 to 255. With the if statements we confine the area of each slider and get the X value of the slider. So the values of the X coordinate of each slider are from 38 to 310 pixels and we need to map these values into values from 0 to 255 which will be used as a PWM signal for lighting up the LED. If you need more details how the RGB LED works you can check my particular tutorialfor that. The rest of the code in this custom function is for drawing the sliders. Back in the loop section we only have the back button which also turns off the LED when pressed.

Stockwell Elastomerics is a leading provider of gaskets for touch screens, displays and integrated touch panel assemblies that serve several functions: sealing, load distributing, gap filling, mechanical shock protection and over-press cushioning.

Often a touch screen gasket or display gasket will help spread the compression load of the housing or bezel on the display. Without a gasket, the enclosure that holds the display in place can create pressure points on the display. In some cases, these pressures can cause distortions, false contacts or short circuits.

Similar to load distributing, touch panel gaskets are used to fill gaps between the screen and the display and/or the screen and bezel. The display gasket will take up gaps generated by tolerance stack-ups in the device.

Display gaskets offer some degree of cushioning to protect the display from damage due to mechanical shock. In the event that a device is dropped or banged, the gasket will act as a touchscreen cushion, offering a limited amount of protection.

Touchscreen gaskets also serve as display cushions when a user presses on the display too hard. The gasket deflects, takes up and spreads the load offering some protection from over-press or overloading in a small area.

LCD dust seals and touch screen dust seals are the most basic requirement of display gasketing. These are often static (not portable), indoor applications where the device is not to be exposed to water. Sealing can be achieved by closed cell sponge materials or fine pore open cell materials such as PORON urethane foam.

Portable electronics or touchscreens used by the public such as gaming touchscreens or indoor information kiosks inevitably will be exposed to some water. This can come from cleaning and beverage splashing, or for portable devices – rain. These electronic devices are also more likely to be exposed to mechanical shocks, such as banging or dropping. Closed cell or compressed microcellular foam materials will offer more protection against incidental, light water exposure.

Outdoor displays such as outdoor information kiosks, ATMs and remote monitoring equipment require more design consideration. To contend with environments such as direct or wind-driven rain, sealing an enclosure, case or housing from ingress requires the proper material as well as proper compression on the gasket. Silicone foam or silicone sponge materials are preferred. Silicone gaskets remain flexible at low temperatures allowing for continued sealing against melting ice and snow as well as protecting against mechanical shock where many other materials will firm up in the cold and transfer energy. Other key features are: closed cell structure, low-stress relaxation, UV and ozone resistance, and general long life.

Light leaking is sometimes a concern with certain LCD or LED display applications. This can be addressed with black gasketing with either a very thin adhesive or a black supported adhesive. A common material configuration for this is soft PORON urethane foam with 3M 9795B adhesive. The 3M 9795B is a film supported double coat adhesive with a black PET support layer that does not pipe light.

Touchscreen gaskets and display gaskets tend to have narrow walls that don’t always lend themselves to easy installation. This can be addressed in a few ways such as fixturing or utilizing the centers as temporary supports. The preferred adhesives for touchscreen gaskets and display gaskets are repositionable adhesives such as Adchem 8311M or 3M 9415 depending on the bond strength required. Most touch panel or touch screen manufacturers offer guidelines for gasketing. These typically show the active screen area, viewing area, and the gasket area. The manufacturer offers various recommendations on adhesive strength and gasket material type, but caution should be taken since each application will vary.

Broad recommendations such as “closed cell foam” do not take into consideration factors such as stress relaxation, compression set, long term sealing performance, outgassing, plasticizer interaction, cost, and manufacturability. Over-designing the gasket can drive the cost up, whereas under designing could result in damaged devices and leaks when the units are in the field. Stockwell Elastomerics can offer guidance on design and manufacturability of touchscreen gaskets or touch panel gaskets. Key design points include:

The interior opening of the gasket should follow the touch screen manufacturer’s recommendation that stays clear of the active area. The outer dimension are defined by the available space behind the bezel or in the case. A rough rule of thumb is that the gasket wall should be 1.5x the thickness. (Example: .062″ thick gasket should have a gasket with .093″ or greater flange width.) This allows for die cutting and makes for a stable gasket when installed. A gasket that is taller than it is wide tends to fold over during compression. The exception to this is when the gasket is captive in a groove.

It is important to keep in mind the clamping loads. While wider gasket walls generally seal better, the overall surface area is directly related to the loads applied to the LCD and touchscreen. Compression Force Deflection curves of various materials are available to aid designers.

Some housing designs allow the touch panel gasket to wrap around the sides to make a tighter fit in the housing. Wrapping the gasket also gives the touch panel assembly additional cushioning for mechanical shock.

The gasket thickness will depend on the designed gap in the enclosure, the fastening scheme, rigidity of the housing and the level of sealing required. Many touch screen gaskets are thin and soft but as the display gets larger the tolerance stacks typically get larger as well. This may require a thicker gasket depending on the fastener locations.

Designing the touch panel gasket for manufacturability can keep costs down – both part cost and touch panel assembling cost. For mid- and high-volume quantities, die cutting is the preferred method. A steel rule die can be produced quickly and inexpensively to allow the gasket to be kiss-cut against the adhesive release liner. Kiss-cutting allows the gasket installer to peel the gasket from a roll. Kiss-cut parts drastically improve throughput during assembly as compared to individually removing a liner from a loose part.

Touch screen displays have been in use for many years. 15 years ago, long before iPhones, you could visit factory floors and see operators controlling equipment with touchscreen displays. At that time the monitors were the old CRT style as compared to newer, slim, lightweight LCD displays and the recently introduced LED backlit touch screen displays. Today, touch screen displays are everywhere – phones, airplane seats, automobile dashboard controls, military controls, and factory equipment, just to name a few applications. Each touch screen application, while similar in function, requires different gasket protection due to their varying designs for in-use environments. Indoor consumer touch screens more often just require dust gaskets with some mechanical shock protection. For these types of applications PORON® cellular urethane works very well. Poron is a micro-cellular urethane foam which offers dust protection and acts as a cushioning pad. Poron offers limited protection from water and fluids when deflected 35 to 50% however it is not recommended for heavy washdown or outdoor gasket applications. Poron is also listed for UL gasket applications UL 50, UL 50E and UL 508 as well as UL 94 flame rated.

Outdoor touch screen displays require a higher level of gasket protection, as do industrial control displays, especially in a wash down environment. Outdoor touch screen gaskets need to protect against heavy wind driven rain, UV and ozone, and must remain flexible and resilient over a wide temperature range. For industrial wash down environments, the gasket needs to protect against high pressure jets of water (IP66). Traditional organic rubber products such as neoprene sponge and EPDM sponge may work for some applications, however stiffening in cold temperatures and stress relaxation need to be taken into consideration. For outdoor and long term applications, closed cell silicone foams and closed cell silicone sponges work best. Silicone gasket materials offer a wide operating temperature and have excellent rebound properties – even after long term deflection. HT-800 medium density silicone foam meets UL gasket standards such as UL 50, UL 50E (continuous compression and periodic recompression), UL 508, UL 1570, UL 1571, UL 1572. HT-800 holds a UL 94V-0 flame rating and is approved for food contact applications per FDA 21 CFR 177.2600, which is useful where there is wash down in food manufacturing.

For applications that require more durable and rugged gasket material, R-10470, R-10480 and R-10450(fiber glass reinforced) silicone sponge provide long term and reliable sealing. R-10400 closed cell silicone sponge meets UL 94V-0 and is also approved for food contact per FDA 21 CFR 177.2600. Sponge and foam products are available in a variety of firmness to allow for proper compression and not bend the LCD bezel.

With the VMUS-4 Corona Cell recently being added to our website, it is a great time to take a look at the specs and features of the VMUS-4 Ozone Generator.

The VMUS-4 is an ozone generator can produce ozone from dry air, or oxygen feed gas.  Either vacuum operation or pressure works fine for the ozone generator cell.  Air cooled operation allows for use in a multitude of applications without the dilemma of cooling water.  With the smaller size and secure ozone production, the VMUS-4 is a great value in ozone generators! The VMUS-4 is a wall mountable Ozone generator which produces up to 10 g/hr of ozone @ 4 l/min of oxygen at over 3% by weight. Higher ozone concentrations are possible at lower oxygen flow rates. At 1 LPM the VMUS-4 produces ozone at 5.3% by weight. For full details on ozone generator performance view our performance chart. This generator uses corona discharge technology. The corona cell in the VMUS-4 uses a true quartz dielectric in a stainless-steel shell. This technology offers maximum reliability and ability for future repairs if ever necessary. Every component on the VMUS-4 is replaceable or repairable for long-term operation in your facility.

4-20 mA input control – control output of ozone generator from 0-100% via a 4-20 mA input. Additional information on this in the adjustable ozone output section below.

External ON/OFF control – turn ozone generator ON/OFF via dry contacts from remote location. Useful for system integration where some automation is required.

Internal air pump – small air-pump can be built into the VMUS-4 to push air through the ozone generator. This is useful when the VMUS-4 is used with an air dryer to produce ozone and a motive flow source is required. Such as, a bubble diffuser at the bottom of a water tank.

Disable Flow Switch – option to disable the integrated flow switch.  Useful for low-flow applications, where ozone production at flows below 1 LPM are required.

The VMUS-4uses an integrated flow switch for simple and reliable automation. This switch will turn the ozone generator ON when feed-gas flow rises above about 1.5 LPM, and turn the ozone generator OFF when feed-gas flow drops below about 1 LPM. This provides some simple automation for your ozone system. When used with a simple venturi injector the VMUS-4 will turn ON and OFF automatically based on suction from the venturi. When used with an oxygen generator the VMUS-4 will turn ON and OFF automatically when flow starts or stops from the oxygen generator. This feature eliminates the need for external wiring or flow/pressure switches.

When the ozone generator is turned OFF due to no flow, the No Flow light illuminates indicating this. When the flow is present this No Flow light will go out, and the blue Ozone light will illuminate, indicating ozone is now produced. This flow switch can be disabled by choosing the “Disable flow-switch” option when purchasing.  There is no cost difference on this option.

The VMUS-4 uses a digital adjustable ozone output shown in the image above. This will allow setting the ozone output from 0-100% using the rocker switch. Green status lights will show the current power setting of the ozone generator clearly and easily. The ozone output can also be adjusted while the ozone generator is in a No Flow status and not producing ozone.

Ozone output can also be adjusted via 4-20 mA input.  This allows adjustment of ozone output via a PLC or another device for automated operation.  When this option is chosen the keypad is overridden as long as the 4-20 mA is connected, if the connection is terminated the keypad is functional again.  Ozone output is displayed via the green LED indicators on the touchpad with the 4-20 mA input or the pushbuttons.

The VMUS-4uses a sophisticated power inverter board that will protect the corona cell and/or transformer against failure. In the event, the corona cell does become contaminated with moisture, or dust the inverter will turn OFF ozone production immediately to protect against damage. Every 6 seconds this inverter will attempt to produce ozone and will restart automatically when conditions improve. While we hope our customers never flood, or contaminated the ozone generator corona cell, we know this is a possibility, this circuit protection will prevent potentially costly repairs.

The VMUS-4 corona cell is completely rebuildable. The Quarts dielectric can be removed from the stainless-steel shell and be cleaned, or replaced if necessary. We know that air dryers, oxygen concentrators, and check valves can fail. Therefore, we provide an easily rebuild-able corona cell so that these external failures do not have to be fatal to your ozone generator. The VMUS-4 Corona cell consists of very few components.
