Thank you for this article. I purchased my E701i-A3 in April 2014. I called the number you provided above and a professional-behaving, English-speaking American assisted me. My new TV is on the way. I hope it lasts. I was told the new TV carries a 90 day warranty or the original TVs warranty…which ever is longer. So for me it’s the 90 day warranty. We’ll see…fingers crossed.
I purchased my M701d-A3 in 2014. It has the same dark shadow spot as shown above on the E701i-A3 that Vizio has admitted to being their problem by extending the warranty. I called customer service and was told it was out of warranty and I would have to have it repaired myself. Someone had to be the first to report the E701i-A3 problem. I would think after paying $2200 for a TV it would las more than 24 months and Vizio would stand behind their product. I’ll just watch it until it completely blacks out then buy a more reputable brand. If you are considering a Vizio, go to another brand. Vizio is a disposable brand.
Like many other reviewers and people I see online they have spent close to $4,000.00 on this T.V. It seemed great until 1 year after I started getting the big black spot that everyone is talking about. I have called vizio to no help whatsoever. I strongly feel that we need to get a class action lawsuit on this to get our tv’s fixed or reimbursed for a bad product sold at a premium price.

I have contacted vizio due to my tv having the white spots. due to my tv being 1 month and 12 days past their “extended warrenty” they are currently refusing to do anything for me. I have argued and spoke with the manager and he is currently sending my tv photos to the claims department. If they do not do anything I am willing to go further. If this is a known issue with their product so much that they have offered an extended warrenty then they should stand behind their tv no matter what. I will be interested in joining you with a class action lawsuit.
The worst customer servine on the planet. I will never buy vizio again. I did however but a square trade warranty. They have concluded my tv be unrepairable and issues me a complete refund. That means these things are so cheaply made they can not fix them. Vizio even told me that while on the phone. That the TV’s are just replaced not repair. This should be a illegal practice and vizio should have to pay deerly for selling such junk and not standing behind the product.

I had one of the 70in tvs with the white spots and vizio replaced it but with the same model with only a 90 day warranty, now after the 90 days i now have the spots again and they tell me it is no longer covered under their warranty, glad i purchased the extended warranty from Sams Club, now waiting on another replacement, just hope its a diff model!!!
I just called Vizio about my 70in and they told me there is nothing they can do about it. They even had the audacity to sell me another TV; as they said at a deeply discounted rate. The rate was $100.00 less than I can buy it in a store!
I got mine replaced with in my warranty, because of large dark spots, and was told the new tv had a warranty. Turns out the warranty that Vizio was talking about was the warranty on the original tv, which expired a month after we got the new tv. The new E701i started getting white spots. When my husband got back from some time over seas he called and they told him the warranty was up, because we were out of a 90 day window of having the tv and the original warranty was up. Again, they told me the tv had a warranty. I guess it was wrong of me to assume that they would give me a new warranty for the new tv not just lump the new tv on the old warranty. Now I read that they extended the warranty but when we called they had not and now we are out of the two year window for the original tv. We are still in the two year window for the new tv but that is not what they go off of they go off of the warranty purchase date not the TV received date.
Ok I have a e701-a3. Talked to vizio they pretty much said I am on my own, called the service that they have me to fix it and that service won’t even touch it because of the recall. They want to use every ecuse on why they don’t have to make it right. Reguardless of serial number when I have models that are recalled by model not serial and u have to take care of them all and not screw your customers especially disabled vets.

My Vizio 70″ is taking a crap as well all of my “smart functions” have quit working, i cant even access my menu functions to try and ‘hard reset’ my tv. I have contacted vizio and of course I am “outside the 2 year mark” when I purchased it in December 2014, (23 months ago, family Christmas present) But, vizio says im on my own, The aren’t willing to help at all.
I just got off the phone with them and they won’t help me either,gave me the # to a tech department,I’m about 6 months over the extended warranty,my TV has the black spot and the white spots,noticed about a year ago but just thought one of the kids hit it with something,I’m very disappointed in vizio’s customer service. All I can say is go to social media, Write reviews and lets start a class action. Vizio refused to help me and ignored my claims. The stress alone of trying to deal with these people we deserve not only refunds , But compensation. FYI Vizio executives told me that no other known issues with these tv’s are known. Complete liars.
This people at Vizio are unbelievable! I have a1 1/2 yr old 65 inches that is now garbage due to white spots. They won’t even offer a discount on another tv. They claim it’s not a common problem. From what I’ve seen it is a very common problem among vizio tvs. I guarantee I will never buy another Vizio television ever again. I will make sure to tell all my family and friends about the horrible customer service that is offered Vizio or in this case not offered by them and the cheap products they put out, and not stand behind them.
I want on the class action lawsuit. I bought my70″ Vizio LED from Sam’s Club. It has the white dots all over it. Why would they not recall all these TV’s?
I have the same problem exactly. I called Vizio and they offered to give me another one without the 3D, of course, for $1000.00. They also said they would send a repairman out and it would cost me $136. If it worked, great; but If it didn’t, I only had to pay $70 and they would pay the rest. I had to sign a disclaimer stating I could do no more with Vizio and this TV. Hell no I wouldn’t do this! I already had a repairman out and he couldn’t fix it. He offered me $40 for it:). No way. Only 13 months ago I paid $2600. I will never buy another Vizio! I would like to join the class action lawsuit also!
RC from North Georgia. I have one of their big ass smart TVs. Half the screen went dark well I did not have the receipt when I contacted them. Around 12/2/16 so I got a hold of Walmart got the receipt they looked at the photos acted really concerned. Then said oops your past our one year warranty period by about 15 days. Said they would give me a discount on a brand new television which was actually more then I paid for this one. Go figure! now here’s the catch off my daughter’s phone was a picture of a new story she took accidentally .The news story was in October on CNN Matching the same one that I took on Fox but I’m not as smart as her I guess. Because my photo cut off what the new story was about her photo included the new story. Well with a little Google , it showed the two news story was ran October 31st 2016 ! And of course it showed the TV half Dark Half normal. But the real Clincher is on Google there was a picture of a group of people much smaller but zoomed in that are the same ones on my daughter and my phone pics of the television. You don’t have to be a detective to figure this one out. That photo was took when that program was on television in October 31st and the Google photo backs it up. Which coincidentally makes the television going bad a month before the year was up .Well Vizio practically accused me of photochopping and also somehow putting the news story on Google neither one I haven’t a clue how to do. LOL So when they figured out they weren’t photochopped they said I waited too long to turn it into them I won’t go into the Walmart story about the receipt again. Then I demanded to know how many complaints were made last year they would not tell me. But they asked me why ! I said because my next question was how many TVs did you replace? Because I have a funny feeling the answer to 0. I agree let’s sue the sons of b******.
I am also interested in a class action law suit as well, i called today i bought mine april 2014. After i saw this thread. I noticed the white dots about a year after we got it. I thought the kids did something to it, my tv now has the black blob as well which prompted me to look it up. Vizio admits there is a problem with these tv’s thats why they extended our warranty to 2 years. We never use the tv unless we are in the room. They offered me a discount on a new tv only. There is no way i would buy a Vizeo again!!!!!! Horrible customer service. Maybe if we used our tv more the problem would have came up earlier. Spend that much money on a tv and it doesn’t even last 3 years. Everyone told me not to buy a vizio because their junk. Well proof is in the pudding folks.
I have a Vizio E701-A3E 70″ TV and also had the extended warranty. Three months after the warranty ended I had a horizontal line, big black spot, and a double picture. I call Vizio and they said they couldn’t help me because the warranty expired. They also said this has been an on going problem but would give me $200.00 off a new TV, what are they crazy! If they knew this was an on going problem with these TV’s then there should have been a recall. I’m also going to file a claim with the BBB and hopefully get some kind of help. If there’s ever a class action lawsuit please count me in, I’ll never buy from Vizio again!
Noah, screens that size are almost always unavailable which is simply due to the cost. Even if it would be available, it will cost you far more than a new TV. I personally would try and find the same model TV but has a other issues, then use that for a donor. The only way to hunt down LCD screens is by using the panel number, not the TV"s make and model number.

Both techniques use an LCD screen that emits no light by itself. The difference is in the lighting behind the screen. With LCD screens this is done by CCFL (cold-cathode fluorescent lamp) and LED makes use of LED lights.
The 70-inch Vizio E701i-A3 does cost twice as much as its 60-inch brother, however, and if you"re spending two grand on a TV, it"s worth considering the alternatives. Sharp"s LC-70LE640U is a better performer, Panasonic"s 65-inch TC-P65ST50 is better still in pretty much every way, and both can be had for just a few hundred more than this Vizio. But if you"re OK with that and just want a huge, very good LED TV, Vizio E701i-A3 is a spectacular value.
The E1-A3 series, whether 60 or 70 inches, is the nicest-looking Vizio TV I can remember. The frame on the 70-incher is mighty thin albeit a bit thicker than the 60- along the sides -- about an inch. It"s less than that along the top and a bit thicker along the bottom. The 70-inch Vizio"s bezel is about the same size as that of the 60-inch Sharp"s LC-60LE640U.

The front face of the remote is not my favorite. The menu/exit/guide/back keys are too small and there"s not enough differentiation between the keys. The remote"s best feature is that it has dedicated keys for Amazon Instant and Netflix; unfortunately, Vizio replaced the Vudu app shortcut key on previous clickers with M-Go (see below). Its worst, shared by the QWERTY side, is lack of any illumination.
Vizio employs the same menus on this set as on its other Smart TVs, and I"m a fan. The menu system resembles an app in appearance, and I liked that the picture settings section is integrated into the main App taskbar (see below). Responses were fast, explanations were complete, and I had no problems finding my way around. I also appreciated the easy guided-setup process and unusually complete onscreen manual.
The E701i-A3 sits in the features sweet spot for LED-based LCD TVs. Its edge-lit LED backlight forgoes the local dimming found on models like Vizio"s own M3D0KD, but the company does include 120Hz processing. Also left off the list is 3D, although in my book that"s no big loss, especially on a TV priced this competitively. If you want a 3D Vizio, your largest screen choice so far is the Sharp"s LC-70LE745U is the closest 70-inch 3D competitor.
Smart TV: Compared with most major TV makers" smart TV implementations, Vizio"s VIA suite of Smart TV apps, which looks exactly the same as it did in its first generation, seems dated. Its design makes finding the app you want more difficult than it should be since you"ll need to scroll through the small ticker at the bottom of the page. Yes, you can rearrange the ticker and weed out the apps you don"t want, but it"s still a pain for those who want to keep more than a few apps installed. Response times were decent, but not as snappy as those from Samsung"s or LG"s app suites. That said I do prefer Vizio"s design to Sharp"s.
Vizio tells me the Skype app isn"t yet active on the 60- and 70-inch versions of this TV, and did not say when it would be: "We"re working actively working with Skype to get these models certified." When it finally gets turned on, you"ll still need to purchase the $70 camera/speakerphone.
Vizio lacks an "app store" and any paid-app choices, but the Yahoo Connected TV Store (the VIA engine is based on Yahoo Widgets) has plenty of free, somewhat useful options like AOL HD, eBay, Fandango (with ticket purchasing), iHeartRadio, SnagFilms, Vimeo, Wealth TV 3D, and WSJ Live. The remainder of the more than 150 other apps are inevitably less useful, including umpteen apps devoted to local news channels.
Picture settings: The E701i-A3 has Vizio"s trademark list of picture modes named after sports -- Football, Golf, Baseball, and Basketball -- that have little to do with improving image quality when watching those sports. Advanced settings include two-point color temperature and a couple of
Connectivity: The back presents a strength for the E701i-A3, with four HDMI ports, one component-video port (shared with the single composite video port), a PC input, and two USB ports.
Vizio told us that the 70-inch size improved upon the picture quality of its 60-inch brother, but to our eyes and tests they"re basically identical. Both can produce a workmanlike picture, albeit one roughly as good as you see on many LED TVs that cost a lot more. Neither quite matches the level of picture quality seen on its chief LED competitor from Sharp, let alone on Panasonic"s excellent plasmas, such as the 65-inch ST50. The Vizio"s black levels were relatively unconvincing and it showed some uniformity and off-angle-viewing issues. On the other hand, it still warrants a score of "good" in this category, mainly by virtue of accurate color and solid performance in bright rooms.
Black level: Both 60- and 70-inch Vizios tied for the least impressive sets in our lineup at reproducing a deep shade of black. Between the two the 70-incher appeared very slightly darker in its letterbox bars, but the 60-incher measured very slightly darker to my meter. No matter; any difference would be almost impossible to discern outside a side-by-side comparison on calibrated TVs in a completely dark room.
Viewed next to the Sharp, its natural competitor, the E701i-A3 showed more washed-out and less punchy dark areas, like the nighttime ship scenes in chapter 5 of "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World"s End." The letterbox bars and dark objects, like Will"s shirt as he approaches Elizabeth (29:39), were lighter in our dark room, robbing them of some impact. The 65-inch Vizio wasn"t much better in terms of black level, but the 55-inch Vizio along with the Panasonic plasma were both superior in this area.
Details in shadows, such as the clothing of the crew (30:52), looked good, with few traces of murkiness or too-bright transitions from dark to light areas. The 65-inch Vizio looked significantly worse, with plenty of crushed, detail-free shadows.
Color accuracy: Again both sizes of E1i-A3 Vizio looked largely identical, and color accuracy in all but the darkest areas was a major strength. The face of Elizabeth in the moonlight came closer to the excellent ST50 than on any of the other TVs, and in particular I appreciated the lack of bluish tinge seen on the other LCD sets. The Sharp was also quite close, however. Later on the beach under bright sunlight (40:18) Elizabeth"s skin tone again looked better than on the other sets. For what it"s worth the 70-incher also showed less greenish tint in the sky behind Jack (40:37) then did the 60-incher, but that"s an extremely minor advantage.
More obvious was the E1i-A3 series" discoloration, specifically bluish tinge, in black areas like the letterbox bars. It was more obvious than on the Sharp or the Vizio 55-incher, and as usual the plasma didn"t have this problem. That said, both the 65-inch Vizio showed even more discolored blacks.
Video processing: The E701i-A3 acquitted itself well and even managed to outperform the M3D0KD in this category, primarily because it rendered 1080p/24 sources with the proper film cadence. When I watched the helicopter flyover from chapter 7 of "I Am Legend," for example, the E701i-A3 delivered the smooth but not soap-opera-like look of film, while the Sharps, for example, evinced the stuttering cadence indicative of 3:2 pull-down.
The Vizio has two settings that affect cadence/smoothness, named Smooth Motion Effect (SME) and Real Cinema Mode (RCM), and each has three positions. Among the possible combinations, the only one that rendered behavior as described above was Off/Off for both.
As usual, there"s a trade-off: if you minimize smoothing by using Off/Off, the E701i-A3 scores basically the same as a 60Hz TV on our motion resolution test. Engaging any of the smoothing modes causes that score to improve. I"ll personally take a smoothing-free image over a better motion resolution score any day because for me it"s quite difficult to see any blurring in program material, even when the E701i-A3 is set to Off/Off.
Uniformity: The screen of my 70-inch review sample was indeed a bit more uniform, with fewer bright spots in dark areas, the the 60-inch sample (these issues can vary widely from sample to sample). That said it wasn"t great. The most obvious issue was a "flashlight" in the bottom right corner that was visible in the letterbox bars of movies; the edges were slightly brighter too, but a lot less visible. Aside from the 60-inch Vizio, all of the other sets had superior uniformity.
The E701i-A3 also lost black-level fidelity when seen from off-angle faster than the M3D0KD or the Sharp. I did appreciate that its color stayed relatively true, however, instead of dipping into blue or red as I saw on a few of the other sets. As usual both sizes performed the same from off-angle.
Bright lighting: Although not quite as aggressively matte as the Sharp"s screen, the Vizio E701i-A3"s screen did a similarly superb job under the lights. It outdid the Panasonic, the M3D550KD and of course the mirrorlike M3D651SV at deadening reflections, and preserved black level well. GEEK BOX: Test Result Score

If you need to know the model number of your VIZIO TV or the serial number. The easiest solution is to look at the model number on a sticker on the back of the TV. There you will see a sticker with information about the TV.

Since the TVs are made by OEM companies, VIZIO TV model numbers do not give much information about the technical characteristics of the TVs. The model number is only needed for information on screen size, TV series, and year of development. More detailed specifications can be found in the description of the particular TV. However, you can get some information from the model number of your TV as well. VIZIO TVs are divided into series, e.g. M, P, D series. Depending on the series, the technical characteristics of the TVs differ greatly. But you should know that VIZIO TVs mainly belong to the budget segment.
M – The first letter indicates the TV series. Vizio divides its TVs into series, which are indicated by letters or the full name, such as OLED or Quantum. I think the sales of premium models in previous years have not lived up to expectations. So the company management decided to produce more budget TV models.
In 2020 there was an experiment from VIZIO, OLED TVs with screens from LG. But it was also a single experiment, there are no new OLED TV models in VIZIO’s lineup anymore.
I don’t delete old pictures explaining the model number of the VIZIO TV. If you are interested in model numbers of older VIZIO TVs that are not covered in this article. You can ask a question in the comments I will definitely try to answer and help you.
First off, after reading so many reviews for the Sharp 70" which I was so close to buying, I decided to go $1-200 cheaper than the cheapest Sharp model in the 70" lineup and buy the Vizio. I"ve always wanted to try Vizio because I"ve heard a lot of good things about them so I did after finding that this was only about 1 of 3 or 4 of the total 70" LCDs on the market from which to choose. My choices were very limited. I read much good and much bad about the Sharp image. So, after reading about the Vizio and finding less negatives for their model than for the Sharp, I went with Vizio.
Sharp apparently has issues with the big ones that actually require professionals to come to the house to calibrate the image because buyers just can"t make it look good no matter what they do. Many of those complaining about this were seemingly "qualified" to make the adjustments, having such extensive experience with LCDs. Also, I don"t know what Sharp is doing with their model numbers but I swear, I had to (with a fine-tooth comb mind you) painstakingly go through the exact specifications of each of the models, and I think there were like 8 70" Sharp models to go through at rather dramatically different price points. Reading reviews for each, each had their own unique image issues even though they all had the same comments regarding not being able to adjust the picture to look good at all. By the time I was done with hours and hours of research over about 2 weeks, I basically gave up. That"s why I was so happy to find the 70" Vizio.
My only complaint is about the white. This complaint would in NO WAY influence my decision to buy this Vizio, but it does exist and I think it"s more of a size issue because I noticed the same thing on the Sharps when comparing them side by side in Best Buy. The 60" Sharp had the best pure white and was very bright. The 70" Sharp that I contemplated buying showed white as a very light blue that"s just a hue, like the bluish you might see while looking at white glaciers. It was noticeably dimmer than the 60" Sharp. The 80" Sharp cinemawide was the dimmest with the greatest bluish hue whites. I would not buy that one. The picture just isn"t good enough.
I have the 70" Vizio side by side with the 37" Samsung running the same shows and the Samsung white is white (snow for instance was pure white on Samsung, bluish hue on Vizio). Given the Samsung"s smaller size though, and, if the blueish hue is the result of the large size of the TV and edge-lit technology, that would make sense. I even turned the contrast, backlighting, and brightness to 100% on the Vizio and it was still bluish. However, oddly enough, while playing my PS3, I noticed that the whites were pure! Explain that! There goes anything that might cause the bluish hue to come from size (but it still seems apparent to me that size causes dimness, perhaps more so with the newer edge-lit technology). I don"t know. I"m not an expert but after seeing all of the different things that can impact picture quality, I"m almost left with the thought, why bother? You"ve got the following things weighing in to what you"re trying to compare: Screen size, picture settings, each TVs built-in technology (60 vs. 120Hz, 720i vs. 720p vs. 1080i vs. 1080p), whether the channel is in HD, what the program you"re watching is shot in (non-HD, 720, 1080), streaming vs. non-streaming content (Netflix, Hulu, On Demand, etc.), bandwidth speed and the quality of your wired/wireless connection, whether on a gaming system or watching any of the above forms of programming, and the list goes on and on.
After seeing and researching all of this, and since it"s impossible to compare apples with apples if you have the chance to do so when comparing TVs of different sizes, brands, technologies etc., I"ve come to the conclusion that you should just buy what you like after seeing it in person. I never saw the Vizio before I bought it but it"s the best advice I can give in my opinion (I took a chance that paid off so far). Even when I change channels from HD to standard, some look horrible (even on the Samsung), and some look fantastic. How do you know what"s supposed to look good when you have no idea what each channel change is going to do to your image? I would say on average, every other channel I change looks better on the other TV. Samsung excels in whites, and the Vizio seems to be more colorful and sharp in many programs.
It’s long been true that if you wait long enough, the price of technology will drop down to meet your budget. Flat-screen HDTVs are prime examples. We’ve recently seen manufacturers respond to the current global financial malaise by squeezing their beans hard enough to produce decent sets for around $1,000. While it’s difficult to say if this trend is due to economic conditions or pressure from price-aggressive new manufacturers, Vizio has been in the vanguard of the young guns making life difficult for traditional HDTV companies. And the company’s not standing still. Exhibit A: Vizio’s new $1,000 E601i-A3. Like its big brother, the 70-inch, $2000 E701i-A3, it’s a true budget buster, but for a change, the budget they’re busting isn’t yours.
The E601i-A3 is remarkably thin for the price, though a bulge in the back panel makes it closer to 2 inches overall rather than the specified 1 inch. The provided stand does not rotate, and the screen is reflective—though less so than some of its pricey competitors. All of its back-panel connections face either down or to the side where they won’t interfere significantly with a wall-mount installation.
Among the available picture controls, we get Vizio’s typically wide range of picture modes, including those odd, sports selections (Golf, Basketball, Baseball, etc.). Among the color temperature options, Normal was the closest to correct out of the box, but for calibration, I used the Movie mode together with the set’s red, green, and blue offset and gain white balance controls. There’s no CMS (color management system—for adjusting the color gamut), no gamma options, and no PIP (picture in picture).
The E601i-A3 can perform motion smoothing via two controls: Smooth Motion Effect and Real Cinema Mode. They must be used together if you want motion compensation. With Real Cinema Mode off, all motion compensation is disabled. If you like motion smoothing via frame interpolation, the Vizio’s is as effective as most. It does what it was designed to do on most source material. But apart from checking this feature, I didn’t use it; the slick smoothness of motion interpolation looks bizarre and distracting to me on film-based sources. A good plasma set, which doesn’t need interpolation, can do better than the Vizio (even with motion interpolation) on horizontal movement, though with its Smooth Motion Effect on high, the Vizio excelled on vertical and diagonal motion.
The Vizio’s refresh rate is 120 hertz. With a 24-fps source, it does 5:5 pulldown; that is, it flashes each real source frame five times. According to Vizio, the set’s motion smoothing interpolation operates only on 30-fps or 60-fps sources, but this was not my experience. I clearly saw the effect of motion interpolation (and I can spot it in seconds) with Smooth Motion Effect on high, even with 24-fps program material.
The Vizio offers the usual wide range of Web-based goodies, accessible either through the wired Ethernet port or wirelessly from your home network via the set’s built-in Wi-Fi receiver. You can also view and/or listen to your own photographs, videos, and music through the E601i-A3. The directly available Internet sites include Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant Video, Vudu, Facebook, Pandora, news, weather, and sports sites, and more. The pictures on several HD Hulu Plus trailers were respectable, though such HD streaming, as we’ve noted before, was still not up to full Blu-ray quality.
Before calibration, the Vizio’s Normal color temperature setting was just a bit too warm (meaning whites leaned slightly toward pink), but its color was more than acceptable for those who can’t or won’t stretch their budget to include a $300-to-$400 calibration. All of the following observations, however, were made post calibration (to ensure we were evaluating the set at its best; we want to see how good a set can be, not just how good our sample is).
The Vizio’s color was so good, I was grasping to find something, anything, to complain about. The measured red point in the color gamut (see the CIE chart in HT Labs Measures) offered a fat target. But past experience has indicated that such displacements, within reason, have little visible effect (especially if they fall slightly outside of the triangle, as they usually do). Gray scale—the tracking of the white point across the full brightness range—is more critical, and post calibration the Vizio’s only deviation there was a slight bluish shift at the very dark end of the brightness range—a shift visible only in comparison to other sets. The Vizio also excelled in its knife-sharp but natural detail. I had no issues with the set’s superb resolution, and you won’t either.
The Vizio’s off-axis performance could be an issue with some viewers, but no more so than with most LCD sets. The color saturation starts to lighten a bit as you move about 20 degrees off center, and while it remains viewable well beyond that, it deteriorates progressively at wider angles. In screen uniformity, there was a slight unevenness in the set’s reproduction of a full black screen image, but it was barely visible. With a full white field, I sensed a trace of magenta discoloration here and there, but it was almost subliminal and never an issue in real-world viewing.
