CG2700S should have a CR about nominal value to >1000:1 with uniformity compensation ON (which only affects brightness since dC uniformity for coloredges are perfect, that’s you pay for)

The control and drive circuit in the bar display module is a low-voltage, micro-power CMOS circuit, which is easy to be breakdown by static electricity. You can aim using that built in colorimeter for min (native contrast) or 0.2-3.5 range. But you can use an i1d3 and calibrate to whatever blacklevel you want (as long as it is smaller or equal than native contrast or native contrast + UC)

Reading the specification of CG2700S which has a contrast raito of 1600:1 and also reading their software manual they advise 0.2 nits for black level (though they have an option to put the black level at monitor’s capability ( for which i dont have any metric).

There are very obvious massive black spots on the surface of the long bar LCD screen, or there are uneven patches of light and dark and cracks at the same time. The liquid crystal display is squeezed or impacted by the external force, resulting in the liquid leakage phenomenon caused by the rupture of the liquid crystal screen. Just recently I"ve noticed a very sticky liquid leaking out of one corner of the screen. There are now bright and dark patches on the screen near where it"s leaking. That is a HW limitation of Benq monitors due to low quality panels + wrong settings and wrong approach to calibratin in its PME/PMU software.

-If you crack LCD screens and find the liquid crystal leakage, don’t panic. Just remember that the liquid crystal materials might not be more toxic than your detergents for stove or washroom. Just wash your hands with soup throughout. Never try to play with it or even worse to taste it. The liquid of the cracked computer screen will not evaporate, no emissions worries.

But since we usually calibrate a monitor at around 120nits or even less so the whites are fixed way below monitor capabilities  shouldn’t the contrast ratio of both monitors when they are been calibrated  the same? If that is correct isn’t the contrast ratio of a monitor in practice a bit irrelevant?

There has been no physical damage to the laptop at all - it just started leaking. Is this a common fault or is it a sign of a defect in the design and manufacture?

I have two HP Spectre 13t-3000. Both are leaking a gummy fluid from the bottom of the screen. The residue deposits on the back of the chrome deck immediately under the screen. There’re more than 300 procedures to produce TFT LCD. The most advanced LCD, in which the array and cell process are highly automatic. Technically, every step in the process can lead to defects, and most of the defects have been eliminated through the development of TFT LCD technology.

You may notice there are some screens have uneven display, which means some white area appears in dark picture or vice versa. We call this ‘mura’, a word originated from Japanese.

Strip liquid crystal screen leakage is physically damaged, and the liquid crystal screen is cut and manufactured as a whole, once the leakage will slowly expand, or even can not display normally, which is irreparable unless the entire screen is replaced. But in terms of the cost of making liquid crystal displays, the screen accounts for 2/3, so it"s not cost-effective to replace the screen, so it"s better to buy a new monitor.

Over the years, screen panel manufacturers have pushed LCD technology to higher resolutions and faster refreshing rates, but the chemical composition of the liquid crystal that fills their screens has hardly changed.

So lets assume one monitor is 1000:1 and the other is 1600:1 if both monitors can achieve the same black level in nits for example 0.13 then the difference would be to on the whites for example on could reach 300 and the other 400.

Some chemicals in liquid crystal displays (LCDs) could alter genes, they said. Animal cells mutated unexpectedly if exposed, and preliminary results of their ongoing study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Monday showed that one of the most polluted places was the home.

Mura is very common but it doesn’t affect the screen function severely, however it still bring bad look. Hence, many high end display manufacturers have their own standards of mura, and the displays without mura are of the best quality.

This does not mean they will look equal on color managed software since PME/PMU usually stores infinite contrast in ICC (hence softproofing may lift shadows) and CN7 by default uses it too (useful on 1000:1) but can be configurable to store actual black.

Point defect is a kind of defect that some point on your screen don’t display correctly. There are mainly three situations: the point keeps displaying black or whitewhen the screen is working or the point can only display a single color.

This is the upper constraint. Choosing D50 will lower contrast a little or using grayscale priority in CN7, or simulating some black level at user’s choice

But if you want it, calibrate that useless Benq first (try PMU 1.1), then read actual black level with displaycal. Then run Colornavigator (patch EDR if needed), and choose 100nit and the blakc level you mesured for the Benq.

(In practice, this basically never happens short of a severe puncture like a blade would cause because of the way these things are manufactured. I"ve actually never personally heard of a situation where an LCD was leaking short of taking a bullet.) EDIT: Let me just make this stronger. This hardly ever happens, ever, anywhere, ever - it"s designed to prevent exactly this sort of problem. Unless you actually witness it in action there is probably no reason to worry about it. Scientists have discovered that LCD screens leak chemicals into just about every environment where they are found, according to a new study, and these particles have the potential to be toxic over time.As described in a study published last week in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers collected dust samples from seven buildings in China: a cafeteria, student dorm, classroom, hotel, home, lab, and an electronics repair shop. Nearly half of the 53 samples tested positive for liquid crystal particles—which are supposed to stay sealed in the screen after manufacturing—even in places where there were no LCD devices at the time of collection.AdvertisementThe international research team analyzed 362 chemicals used in LCD screens and found that nearly 100 have the potential to be toxic. These particles don’t break down quickly and have "high mobility" in the environment. When inhaled or ingested, according to the study, these particles can build up in the body over time with toxic effects, potentially causing digestive problems and other health issues.“These chemicals are semi-liquid and can get into the environment at any time during manufacturing and recycling, and they are vaporized during burning,” said University of Saskatchewan environmental toxicologist and lead author John Giesy in a press release. “Now we also know that these chemicals are being released by products just by using them.”According to the study, these chemicals are "simply filled" into the space between polarizers (light filters) during manufacturing and are not chemically bonded to any base material. This means that "they can be released during production; through wastewater; or during active use, disposal, or recycling."To be clear, the researchers didn"t observe any adverse health effects from the accumulation of liquid crystals in the human body; they only found that these crystals do in fact leak from devices, and that they have the potential to be toxic.

I used to work for a laptop manufacturer doing support, and we were instructed that in the event that a customer ever called reporting a leaking LCD we were to IMMEDIATELY tell them to hang up the phone, call emergency services, and get a hazmat team onsite, while we escalated the call to our internal dedicated safety response team. That seems like a pretty harsh response (it"s more severe than what I would have been expected to do for anything short of "My laptop set my house on fire") so I"m inclined to think this stuff isn"t especially safe. It may be true that it"s only a hazard if ingested, though; based on my semi-limited knowledge of the chemistry involved that seems possible. If it were me, though, I"d take the extra cautious route just in case.

-Any electronics has environment impact and can’t be used landfills. If you want to get rid of old LCD monitors or LCD TVs, give them to electronic collection stations. Let’s the professionals to handle them. They will extract some precious metals/parts and make them into something useful or at least not hazard. FYI, liquid crystal materials are retrievable.
