I needed a TV for the baby"s room but didn"t plan on spending major money on it. It was the the baby"s room not an entertainment room so I searched alot of local stores and online. It seems a regular LED is pretty cheap and almost everything is a smart TV. I still needed something to playhis fav cartoons and stuff on regular DVDs. This is it...not many other options for TV dvd combos in this size. I"ve had Insignia products in the past even the car DVD player and so far they"ve been good to me. It seems even the reviews for Insignia in general was more consistant than some of the other known brands in the range of RCA, Magnavox, Element, Emerson and such. Obviously not Sony, Samsung etc level but again, this is the baby distractor for sometimes not a major entertainment piece. Here"s the run down:
- screen isn"t bad at all - viewing angles are not as limited as I thought for a "generic" tv. I could"ve used a super low profile mount with no tilt or swing and still seem it fine from corner to corner in an aprox. 12 x 12 room
- even though it is a dvd combo, it really doesn"t add a noticable weight so it will not be a factor when considering mounts. However, I will note something about mount designs...since this is 32" I will say be very picky if not shy from most of the swing arm designs. Unless you get a swing arm that can handle up to a 65", you may find they may "wobble" or be prone to flex/sag if you extend. IMHO larger tvs should go with the more industrial but solid base/arms/rails and TV base plate design. I usually get those but this time I figured I would barely adjust if needed and I never tried a swing arm. Now I learned too..it will work but def not as secure and stable as the other design. I will keep it for now but will plan on swapping mounts when he turns into a grabby walking toddler.
- built in DTV receiver did a decent job without an antenna...didn"t gain much when I did add a cheapy antenna but just the fact that it gained the same channels (most if not all) is a pleasant surprise
- TV speakers are ok, some movies I would have to crank it 3/4 to get decent sound when he"s rattling round with his toys while watching or if there"s ruckus in the adjacent room. As TVs get slimmer and screen goes more to the edge, you"ll find many have speaker issues so this is not an exception. Still didn"t need to mount a sound bar to it so it counts for something. Just figured I"d mention it though
Overall, would I buy it again? Considering there are limited options for DVD TV combos in this size and the price plus quality, yes. Otherwise, I probably wouldn"t make it the centerpiece of my livingroom entertainment system. If I could find all his fav shows on the web, then I would have gone the smart TV route.
Update: 1/14/17 It looks like the DVD player finally bit the dust. It accepts and ejects but it doesn"t read discs anymore. It just makes noise like it keeps looking for the data but nothing happens anytime soon. The TV itself, HDMI and AV still work just fine, just DVD player is kaput. I strapped a amazon fire stick to it and turned it into a "smart" TV for it"s remaining years. I"m going to try out a couple laser lens cleaners just for my own curiosity. I"ll update if it works but if you read nothing after this, assume it didn"t work and I"m waiting to report on it"s complete time of death.
