You interact with a touch screen monitor constantly throughout your daily life. You will see them in cell phones, ATM’s, kiosks, ticket vending machines, manufacturing plants and more. All of these use touch panels to enable the user to interact with a computer or device without the use of a keyboard or mouse. But did you know there are several uniquely different types of Touch Screens? The five most common types of touch screen are: 5-Wire Resistive, Surface Capacitive touch, Projected Capacitive (P-Cap), SAW (Surface Acoustic Wave), and IR (Infrared).
We are often asked “How does a touch screen monitor work?” A touch screen basically replaces the functionality of a keyboard and mouse. Below is a basic description of 5 types of touch screen monitor technology.
5-Wire Resistive Touch is the most widely touch technology in use today. A resistive touch screen monitor is composed of a glass panel and a film screen, each covered with a thin metallic layer, separated by a narrow gap. For instance, when a user touches the screen, the two metallic layers make contact, resulting in electrical flow. The point of contact is detected by this change in voltage.
Surface Capacitive touch screen is the second most popular type of touch screens on the market. In a surface capacitive touch screen monitor, a transparent electrode layer is placed on top of a glass panel. This is then covered by a protective cover. When an exposed finger touches the monitor screen, it reacts to the static electrical capacity of the human body. Consequently, some of the electrical charge transfers from the screen to the user. This decrease in capacitance is detected by sensors located at the four corners of the screen, allowing the controller to determine the touch point. Surface capacitive touch screens can only be activated by the touch of human skin or a stylus holding an electrical charge.
Projected Capacitive (P-Cap) is similar to Surface Capacitive, but it offers two primary advantages. First, in addition to a bare finger, it can also be activated with surgical gloves or thin cotton gloves. Secondly, P-Cap enables multi-touch activation (simultaneous input from two or more fingers). A projected capacitive touch screen is composed of a sheet of glass with embedded transparent electrode films and an IC chip. This creates a three dimensional electrostatic field. Therefore, when a finger comes into contact with the screen, the ratios of the electrical currents change and the computer is able to detect the touch points. SAW (Surface Acoustic Wave) touch screen monitors utilize a series of piezoelectric transducers and receivers. These are positioned along the sides of the monitor’s glass plate to create an invisible grid of ultrasonic waves on the surface. When the panel is touched, a portion of the wave is absorbed. This allows the receiving transducer to locate the touch point and send this data to the computer. SAW monitors can be activated by a finger, gloved hand, or soft-tip stylus. SAW monitors offer easy use and high visibility.
IR (Infrared) type touch screen monitors do not overlay the display with an additional screen or screen sandwich. Instead, infrared monitors use IR emitters and receivers to create an invisible grid of light beams across the screen. This ensures the best possible image quality. When an object interrupts the invisible infrared light beam, the sensors are able to locate the touch point. The X and Y coordinates are then sent to the controller.

If you’re looking for a modern touch screen monitor complete with the latest in eye protecting technology and ergonomic design then the Philips 242B9T is the best choice for you. A lot of the touch screen monitors in our rankings are a few years old at least, and this isn’t because we’re lazy - there just aren’t many touch screen monitors being released these days as the technology has gone a little out of fashion. But Philips is still pushing the technology forwards and the Philips 242B9T is a great example of why touch screen monitors are still valuable.
We found the Philips 242B9T was comfortable to use and had a ton of modern features that make it ideal for work use. There is a low blue light mode to help reduce eye strain and the lack of raised bezels mean that you won’t irritate your fingers when touching near the border of the screen. It also has great visual fidelity with a 1080p resolution and Flicker-Free technology to further reduce eye strain caused by the flickering LEDs that power most monitors.
The screen is highly adjustable too with a built in stand that can hold the screen upright, or go all the way down to basically lying flat on your desk. The only real issue is that the screen itself is quite heavy, and it can be a little awkward to move between different viewing angles. For our money, the Acer T232HL is the best touch screen monitor on the market today. It’s exceptionally well-built with a sturdy stand which prevents the monitor from moving around in use. The edgeless bezel, while a little ugly, means that you never bang your hands against the desk while using the touch screen - this was an issue with many of the small bezel monitors that we tested. There are certainly better looking monitors out there though, and the large bezels on the Acer T232HL could be off putting to some.
The touch screen itself works perfectly and the image quality is up there with the best HD monitor. The only area that the Acer T232HL struggles with is color accuracy, which means that it’s not ideal for photo editing or watching movies.
In the end, we’ve decided that touch screens are all about function, not form, and the Acer T232HL is the best touch screen monitor for practical purposes. Planar has been around for a while, and this VESA-mountable 27-inch display is a solid option for users looking for something to bring projects to life at scale. The Planar Helium PCT2785 offers impressive color accuracy, and while its resolution caps out at 1080p, it’s clear enough for many creative projects and video calls.
In fact, it essentially acts as an all-in-one hub, with a built-in webcam and microphone. It’s also able to be tilted with a built-in stand, making it feel closer to a large tablet than a standard monitor.
We will concede, though, that the thick bezels won’t be for everybody, but the option of both HDMI and DisplayPort could make it ideal for many users despite the monitor looking a little long in the tooth.
The Planar Helium PCT2235 has a strange look about it, as if someone stole the base from a standard monitor and just left the display propped up on a desk. The bottom bezel of the screen rests on your work surface. The bezel is quite thick and extends around the screen on all sides, which isn’t pleasant to look at, but it is functional.
Like most touch screen monitors, the Planar Helium PCT2235 has an adjustable A-frame stand that can also be folded away to let the monitor lie flat on your desk. The tilt range on the Planar Helium PCT2235 is an impressive 55 degrees though, which means it’s easier to adjust the screen into a comfortable position.
At 24-inches and 7.9 pounds, it’s a decent-sized monitor that won’t take much effort to set up or move between rooms if you need. At the same time, it’s a good sized screen that won’t take up too much desk space - 24-inches is basically the Goldilocks zone for monitors.
When it comes to our tests of the screen itself, we had mixed results. The Planar Helium PCT2235 had the longest response time of any of the touch screen monitors that we tested. That means that the pixels take a long time to switch between one color to the next, which isn’t ideal for watching movies or playing games. It does have great color accuracy though, which means it’s great for editing photos and images.
In the end, the Planar Helium PCT2235 isn’t particularly flashy, but if you’re looking for a great touch screen monitor on a budget, it is a fantastic choice.
The Dell P2418HT is unique among the touch screen monitors that we tested, in that it’s the only one with a matte finish instead of the usual reflective glass screen. This matte finish means that the Dell P2418HT’s screen is far less reflective than most, which reduces glare for users. The screen’s non-reflective finish also means that it looks much more like a traditional monitor, which is great if you want it to blend in.
The innovation doesn’t stop there though, thanks to the Dell P2418HT’s unique flexible rotating arm which holds up the display in place of a traditional A-frame stand. The flexible arm can be easily adjusted, allowing for forwards and backwards, as well as up and down movements. The downside of this is that the stand isn’t as stable as a fixed frame, so the screen can wiggle around during use. It also doesn’t have seamless bevels, which means you can bang your fingers into the edges when using the screen, which is irritating.
Compared with the other monitors that we tested, the Dell P2418HT is far more energy efficient which means it will cost less to run it over time. It also impressed us with it’s fantastic color accuracy, something that our top choice, the Acer T232HL struggled with.
All-in-all, the Dell P2418HT is a great touch screen monitor that does just enough to stand out from the crowd, providing some much needed variety in a relatively samey market.
The perfect touch screen monitor for space conscious consumers, the 21.5-inch ViewSonic TD2230 offers great image quality in a compact design. With a compact form factor and relatively light weight of just 7.9 ounces, it’s portable too, which is great if you need to move the monitor around a lot
Sadly, the ViewSonic TD2230 is let down by some odd design choices. For one thing, the connection ports are all located on the side of the monitor, which means you end up with cables sticking out the side of your screen, which is a nightmare for cable management aficionados. It can also be a little uncomfortable to use, which is a huge issue if you need to use the touch screen for extended periods of time.

Asus is a household name, and for good reason – the company offers plenty of high-quality products at a very reasonable price, and the 21.5-inch VT229H touch screen monitor is no different.
Aside from a thick “chin” with the company’s logo, this option is the polar opposite of the Planar, with bezels so thin they’re almost not there at all. The IPS panel offers great color accuracy, too, and it’s responsive too, with ten-point multi-touch support. The display is tough, too, and supports a variety of gestures.
We’d have liked more than the 20-degree tilt on offer and some ports though, but with Windows 10 support right out of the box it’s sure to be a solid option for the budget-conscious buyer – or anyone looking for a solid 1080p monitor.
We’ll get the bad news out of the way first, but there’s no HDMI port on the less-than-catchily titled Lenovo ThinkCentre "Tiny in One" Gen 4 Touch. In fact, the display uses a 3-in-1 cable that supports power, USB 3.1, and Displayport all at once – minimizing the number of cables on any given workstation.
Aside from that quirk, there’s a lot to love though, with a stereo speaker that does its best given the small amount of space it has to work with, and a built-in microphone system and webcam which make it ideal for video calls. That does make it look a little like it’s been kitbashed together somewhat, though.
The IPS panel has a full HD, 1080p resolution, but with solid color and contrast it’s an ideal addition to a home office setup that may be lacking in web conferencing tools.
The price of monitors today fluctuates wildly. They’re generally seen as an essential piece of equipment that’s considered an investment. For a normal, everyday monitor you can pay anywhere from $100-200 for an okay screen that’ll do the job. The average touch screen monitor will be a bit pricier, at around $300, due to the expensive projective capacitive technology needed to create monitors that recognize touch. However, if you’re after a specialist gaming monitor or one with a curved screen, then expect to pay even more than this.
For many, a huge display is a large canvas, but this can stretch the monitor’s resolution a tad too far and actually diminish the quality of an image. Conversely, a smaller touchscreen monitor may make you feel like there’s just not enough room to work with, or could make it an ideal companion to a larger, non-touchscreen display.
While you may love using a touchscreen display, you may also want to look for one with more accessible on-device controls – or at least somewhere you’re unlikely to press them accidentally during normal use.

AMOLED burn-in on screens and displays is permanent. Fortunately, you can slow it down and reduce its visibility by using a few simple tricks, which can also increase battery life.
Each pixel within an Active Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode (AMOLED) comprises red, green, and blue (and sometimes white) sub-pixels. When they emit light, they decay. Burn-in appears because individual sub-pixels lose brightness at different rates, depending on its color. The most-used light-emitting sub-pixels, such as for navigation and status icons, wear out first, leading to uneven light production.
So the more you use the device, the more visible its burn-in. And the longer you display the same image, the more that image"s outline will persist on the display.
It doesn"t help that many user-interface buttons are white. For an AMOLED panel to produce white light, the display switches on three different sub-pixels in proximity to one another. Each sub-pixel produces a different color: red, blue, and green. Together they appear white to the human eye. However, each of the three colors wears out at different rates, depending on the manufacturer.
For the AMOLED on most smartphones, red sub-pixels are the most durable, followed by green. Blue decays the fastest. When you see burn-in, it"s often caused by a weakening blue sub-pixel. All "fixes" aim at addressing the failing blue sub-pixel. Remember, there are also tools available to fix dead pixels.
Everyone with an OLED display has some burn-in. But often, it"s not fully visible unless you display a solid color at maximum brightness. The Android operating system has access to many apps that detect burn-in damage. The best of these is Screen Test.
Screen Test is ultra-simple: install and run the app. Touching the screen shifts between colors and patterns. If you see a persistent image impression or blotchy coloration, you have burn-in.
For my AMOLED phone, I"ve taken every precaution against screen burn-in. Even so, the display is still a little blotchy after over a year of use. Fortunately, there are no indications of burn-in where the navigation buttons are.
Android 10"s dark mode finally allows for Android system menus and apps to appear dark in color. It will turn Chrome"s user interface black, as well as the Settings menu, navigation bar, and notifications shade.
Android made it possible to get rid of the navigation bar in Android 10. Once enabled, gestures allow navigation by swiping your finger on the screen. You can enable Gesture mode by doing the following:
Some might notice that the stock wallpapers in Android aren"t usually suited for OLED screens. OLED screens consume very little energy when displaying the color black, and they do not burn-in when displaying black. Unfortunately, older Android versions don"t include a solid black wallpaper option.
Fortunately, the free app Colors, from developer Tim Clark, allows users to change their wallpaper to a solid color. Just install and run the app, then choose a solid black background as the new wallpaper.
Using black wallpaper will improve the battery performance of your device, so this one is a win-win. However, if you have Android 8.0 or newer, you might already have solid colors available as a wallpaper.
If you don"t have Android 10 or newer, the default Android Launcher isn"t OLED friendly. In Android 5.0, it forces the App Drawer wallpaper to white (the worst color for OLED screens). One of the best launchers for darker colors is Nova Launcher. Not only is it more responsive, it offers better customization options.
Minma Icon Pack changes your bright, screen-damaging icons into a darker, OLED-friendly palette. Over 300 icons are available, which cover the default icons as well as many others.
Firefox Mobile is infinitely customizable. While they, unfortunately, removed many of their browser"s mobile add-ons, you can still turn entire webpages black. And, on top of that, Firefox includes a dark theme.
I recommend installing an add-on. The easiest-to-use add-on is Dark Reader. Dark Reader does more than just change the color of Firefox"s user interface; Dark Reader can change webpages" to black backgrounds with red text, reducing eye strain and burn-in while also improving battery life.
Android"s dark-themed virtual keyboard options can reduce burn-in (and improve battery life). The best of these is SwiftKey, which allows users to change the color of their keyboards. The best SwiftKey theme I"ve seen so far is the Pumpkin theme. If you turn on Android"s dark theme, it automatically turns the keyboard black. In this case, you can simply use the default keyboard.
There are a few other burn-in repair tools, but I don"t recommend them since they either require root access and/or can increase screen damage. However, for reference, you can read about them below and why using them is a bad idea. They fall into two categories:
I do not recommend using this option unless your screen is already trashed. It will cause additional damage but may reduce the appearance of already existing on-screen burn. Inverting colors simply reverses the colors displayed on your screen. Whites become blacks and vice-versa.
If you use the phone with the colors inverted for extended periods of time, it will burn-in the areas surrounding the burned-in navigation bar, reducing its visibility.
Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) introduced the Invert colors option to help the visually impaired. It"s not at all designed to combat burn-in and remains experimental. To invert colors, take the following steps:
Several tools claim to reduce the appearance of burn-in by attempting to age the entirety of your OLED panel. These screen burn-in tools flash red, green, and blue (or other) colors on your screen.
The reason is pretty simple: AMOLED burn-in occurs as a natural part of an organic LED"s life cycle. Therefore, tools that claim to fix AMOLED burn-in will cause uniform damage across all AMOLED pixels thus potentially worsening its image quality.
None of these methods will stop the inevitable and slow destruction of your device"s screen. The Echo Show 15 now comes with the Fire TV interface, thanks to a software update that started rolling out last week. Amazon’s largest smart display already offered a few streaming apps, but the update brings more streaming services, more live TV options, and a native YouTube app on an Echo device for the first time since 2017. It makes the Echo Show 15 a better television but a slightly worse smart display.
If your main beef with the Show 15 was the limited video options, this is a great update. But it does remove some touch functionality from the Show 15 and makes it more reliant on either voice control through Alexa, a new physical remote option, or a truly baffling on-screen remote.
With Fire TV, Amazon’s large display now has way more streaming content than before, including native apps for YouTube and YouTubeTV. But the software is sluggish compared to a dedicated Fire TV, and the update removes some touch functions from this touchscreen smart display.
When Amazon launched its big-screen Echo Show last year, it was touted as an ideal kitchen TV slash household hub: a digital bulletin board for shopping lists and notes, a family calendar, and more that could also keep you entertained while munching on Cheerios or mopping the floor.
But with all those features crammed onto one device, it didn’t do any of them particularly well. The wall-mountable smart display can fit easily into a kitchen without taking up counter space, and I liked the portability of using it with the tilt stand (sold separately). But watching TV on the Echo Show 15 just wasn’t a great experience, mainly because of the limited number of video apps.
At launch, the Show 15 had full HD resolution streaming from Netflix, Prime Video, and Hulu Live. Sling TV came along a little later. But there was no YouTube TV, no Disney Plus, no HBO Max or Paramount or Peacock.
Sure, I could binge-watch Ozark on Netflix while cooking dinner or stick my tween in front of Naruto while she ate her breakfast. Still, overall, it wasn’t compelling enough to evict the nearly-as-capable Echo Show 10, with its smaller but useful rotating screen, from my kitchen counter.
But with Fire TV on board, the Show 15 becomes a bonafide streaming device. That’s in addition to a smart speaker, digital picture frame (a Photo Frame update vastly improved this function), video calling device, and bulletin board. As a YouTubeTV subscriber, I can now watch TV in my kitchen on a larger display than the Nest Hub Max I currently use.
It’s also refreshing to have access to nearly all my streaming subscriptions on one device. There are a couple of notable exceptions: there’s no BBC app, and the Apple TV app is missing, even though it’s on the regular Fire TV interface. Luna, Amazon’s cloud gaming service, is also absent. Sideloading apps is also not supported, according to Amazon, although some have found workarounds.
Don’t get me wrong: this is not going to replace your main living room TV, and it’s hardly the best picture quality money can buy. But for a second (or third or fourth) screen in a kitchen or office or as a multi-functional single-screen slash smart speaker in a guest room, it’s a good option.
Fire TV on the Echo Show 15 is a free — but mandatory — update that brings the standard Fire TV interface to the smart display. It comes with almost all the same apps and content as on a Fire TV streaming stick (other than those noted above) and adds the option of using an Alexa remote control — a new experience that I actually really liked.
The downside is the Fire TV interface is the same one found on Amazon’s streaming sticks, and most of the apps in it are not designed for touch. You can still navigate the main interface and the Prime Video app by touch, but for almost everything else, you have to use a Fire TV remote control or a new on-screen remote — if you want to use your hands.
Amazon says this is because those apps were initially developed for a TV interface. Sure, but the Echo Show 15 already had native touch-enabled apps for Netflix, Hulu, and Sling TV, but those have been replaced with remote-only apps inside the Fire TV interface. Amazon has not said if the Fire TV capability is coming to the Show 10 or 8, so as of now, those still support touch on the existing apps.
While you can still interact with the touchscreen while in Fire TV mode — swipe from the top for quick access to the standard Show shortcuts and right to left to bring up widgets — it’s frustrating that Amazon didn’t bother modifying all the Fire TV apps to account for the fact that it’s on a touchscreen device.
This is a smart display, first and foremost, and I’m used to tapping and swiping to access my shopping list, turning on my smart lights, and viewing my calendar. Using an on-screen virtual remote to interact with menus on a different part of the same screen takes some getting used to. It works reliably and is easy to navigate with, but my brain has to readjust each time. It’s like when you switch from using an iPad to a MacBook.
The interface works much better with a physical remote, of course, especially in a sit-back-and-watch environment. I tested with a third-gen Fire TV Alexa voice remote($29.99). You can use other Alexa remotes, but functionality varies. Amazon says the third-gen is the most complete experience, and it’s offering the remote for $9.99 if you order it through the Echo Show 15. You can also use the Fire TV mobile app on a smartphone. But in the Show’s native environment — the kitchen — voice control is still more useful.
The third-gen remote has a TV button that takes you right to a program guide for any live channels you have available, plus four dedicated buttons to launch Prime Video, Netflix, Disney Plus, and Hulu. You can also launch any Fire TV app or specific show, movie, or live TV channel with your voice. This also includes YouTube and YouTube Kids. Yes, for the first time since 2017, there are native YouTube apps on an Echo Show. For some, that alone is worth the price of admission.
Another thing you lose is the ability to play some content in portrait mode. The Show 15 can be mounted horizontally or vertically, but once you enable Fire TV, the only services that play video in portrait orientation are YouTube’s apps, HBO Max, Disney Plus, and Prime Video. Everything else simply won’t work. Amazon says it’s working on adding more support for portrait video.
I am a telly addict: I always have a screen showing some sporting event — usually tennis, currently football [Ed note: soccer] — or other background chatter. I work from home, so it keeps me company. The Echo Show 15 now fills that need nicely while also providing more functionality than most standard TVs.
Of course, TVs are moving toward becoming full-fledged smart displays — capable of doing much more than just streaming your favorite shows. Samsung is turning all its TVs into SmartThings hubs that will support Matter (the Echo Show 15 will also be a Matter controller), and many TV brands can be controlled by voice as well as remote controls (not touch, though!)
Today, the Show lets me stream live views of my connected smart home cameras — even picture-in-picture while watching TV — and can pop up a live feed from compatible video doorbells when someone comes knocking. I can also use voice or touch to control smart home devices and do everything else Alexa offers.
Many smart TVs can do all this, too, often with additional hardware. But we’re clearly moving toward a combined world here, and this is a small step in that direction. Whether that’s a direction we want, however, it’s a bit too early to tell.
This monitor is just epic. I picked it up to use with a few of my devices. It works really well on Linux. I was surprised that the Switch actually switches to Dock mode which is very nice. The screen itself is beautiful. It"s the best display I"ve owned, other than an OLED. The build quality was better than I expected.
If I had to think of one negative it would the cover. It does a great job of protecting the screen but you are limited in angles when using it. That"s not a bad thing for me because I didn"t plan to use the cover as a way to stand the monitor up but it might be something important to someone else.
