Starting with a standard 15″ rackmount display, NLS enlarged the chassis to add a 6-slot ISA computer backplane. We positioned the operator accessible peripherals, I/O connectors and controls behind a gasket-sealed access door and we installed the power supply, hard drive and other internal components and electronics in locations chosen to preserve the required compact physical outline of the enclosure. Today our RW-15 workstation computer with its IP65 sealed 15″ touchmonitor display and front panel access door is deployed fleet-wide on aircraft carriers for servicing F-16 and F-18 naval fighter jets.
Our military displays are COTS products which have been modified to meet various MIL specs. They are designed to withstand harsh conditions such as extreme cold and heat, high humidity, dust and sand, water and salt fog exposure, shock and vibration, altitude extremes and rapid decompression, rapid acceleration and deceleration. Many displays include or can be modified to include performance requirements such as sunlight readability, NVIS compatibility, DO-160, EMI requirements, and more.
ZMicro incorporates the latest commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) technology for its military displays and there’s always ample opportunity for customization. For example, if your application requires different backlights for NVIS or day-light readable requirements, a different optical coating stack, or a different touch-screen technology, ZMicro can adapt a display to provide the necessary features and capabilities.

Optical bonding is a method in which it provides enhanced visibility and durability to LCD monitors. Between the LCD module and the cover glass or touch panel of a monitor is a tiny gap of air. In optical bonding, a layer of resin is applied to fill the gap, uniting the two together and filling the air gap. With optical bonding, it decreases parallax issues, eliminating the gap that creates the illusion that pixels shift position depending on the line of sight. Optical bonding also increases the display’s range of viewing angles and delivers more accurate touch alignment in touch-based interactive systems.
The U.S. Military Standard (MIL-STD) gives a guideline for devices that are said to be “rugged” or “ruggedized”. It was introduced to provide a series of tests to simulate how the material would hold up to environmental stress during an operational lifetime. The MIL-STD standards detail 28 different testing methods that cover everything from temperature to fungal infestation to gunfire. The eight tests used to determine if a computing device is rugged include high temperature, low temperature, rain, humidity, sand and dust, immersion, vibration, and shock.
