fpd2485w tft lcd monitor supplier

I purchased this monitor 11/2007. In 2/2008, the monitor completely died. I called Gateway and they refused to send me a new monitor. they would only send a refurb. (customer service reps were nasty, arrogant, and rude, when you do not agree with them they hang up on you).

The second monitor did not work right out of the box, none of the touch control buttons lit up and they did not work, I had no way to turn the monitor on or off.

They sent a third refurb unit, and again, right out of the box, the backlight kept turning off, I would have to cycle the power several times to get it to come back on and then it would only stay on for a few seconds. Tech support said they would take back the monitor and the speaker bar add-on (since the speaker only worked on this one monitor) and refund my money for both. He transferred me to customer service to process the refund and returns and they changed there mind and said they will not give a refund. When I asked how long this was going to go on, there reply was "until I get a unit the works"

In all fairness, this is a nice monitor, but three bad ones in a row, and there lack of proper customer service, is enough to make anyone think twice!

Thanks, Jarred, for the informed review. A selfish request--could you review the current Dell, Apple, and Samsung 23/24" LCDs? A friend is in the market in the next couple months and I am buying before the end of the year. From what little looking I"ve done, these seem to be the best candidates so far for hobbyist photo work (and movie viewing, game playing, web browsing...).

I purchased this monitor over the weekend at a local Best Buy. Here are my results from calibrating with the Pantone/greatagmacbeth Eye-One Display 2 colorimeter using the Eye-One Match 3.6.1 software.

Not sure what more could be done to fine tune the display. If you go to the user settings you can adjust RGB colors, but being an LCD it doesn"t really make a difference whether you do that on the LCD or in the Windows drivers. They both end up accomplishing the same thing. I have never looked into "hidden service menus" on any of the LCDs I"ve used, I"m sorry to say.

In your future LCD display reviews, I suggest that you identify the manufacturer and model of LCD panel in the monitor, and continue to identify the manufacturer and model of the signal processing chipset (you did in this review), as in Kristopher"s November, 2003 "Dell UltraSharp 2001FP Preview: Gaming LCDs for the Masses" review. Finding information about an LCD monitor"s panel and chipset is difficult at best. I suspect that many enthusiasts would often consider the panel type, brand and model when choosing monitors, if that information was readily available. In fact, I frequently read discussions about the merits of S-IPS panels over S-PVA panels. Additionally, would you also alert readers when a monitor manufacturer uses different types of panels in the same monitor, i.e., model. This practice is disconcerting; Consumers simply can"t be certain that the specific model that they purchase will have a specific panel. I believe that a vocal outcry would eliminate or substantially reduce this practice.

Currently, the FPD2485W is listed for $680 on the Gateway web site, while the regular price of the Dell 2407WFP is $750. Dell routinely runs sales, however, and the 2407WFP is available for $675 right now. You basically end up with two very similar monitors that cost about the same amount, although the Dell comes with a three-year warranty included making it a slightly better deal.

The problem is, darker blacks are good but brighter whites are only good up to a certain point. Anything above 400 cd/m 2 is far too bright in our opinion. As you can see, the black levels of both the Gateway and Dell LCD are equal, /quote:

Thinking of buying an LCD television set? Wait no longer: The price plunge is over. After years of accelerating decline, prices for consumer LCD TVs -- especially those smaller than 32 inches -- have hit bottom, industry insiders say.

That"s because the price of wholesale LCD flat panels -- the display component of your TV set -- has recently reached its lowest point and rebounded, according to numbers released by market data research firm iSuppli. When a TV"s most expensive single component starts getting more expensive, you can kiss retail price cuts goodbye.

"Prices are going up like crazy. We expected it to be a tight supply, but it seems like there is something going on," says Sweta Dash, director of LCD research for iSuppli, about the LCD market. "In just one month the price increase has been really high."

Though April saw the first notable price increase to hit flat panels since their appearance in TV sets and computer displays, the bounce then was barely perceptible compared to massive price drops over the previous six months. In May, however, prices have risen sharply. The prices that TV manufacturers pay for the display screens in their TVs typically account for 50 to 60 percent of a TV"s final consumer price. According to iSuppli, the manufacturer prices for 32-inch and smaller LCD panels rose in May by as much as $5 to $10 over April"s prices (then about $300 for a 32-inch display).

"We anticipate that LCD prices as a whole are stabilizing," says Todd Richardson, a senior vice president at Philips North America. "Smaller screens will stabilize or incrementally go up, due to global supply."

The competitive state of affairs came after LCD makers rushed to maximize production in the early years of the decade, as ultra-thin monitors and televisions overwhelmed older technology unexpectedly quickly in the public imagination. Now manufacturers are culling production capacity and letting stockpiles fall fallow. In fact, screens sized 37 inches and less are now sold out for the year worldwide, sources say.

However, the tight LCD panel market is unlikely to translate into direct price increases at your local electronics store, according to iSuppli"s Dash.

Dell"s UltraSharp 2407LCD-HC is basically the same 24-inch widescreen monitor that we reviewed from Dell a year ago, only with an improved range of displayable color. We called that old Dell display the best in its class. This new one earns similar admiration, although we found its image quality was less impressive with static images than with video and games. Perhaps a serious photo editor wouldn"t consider a consumer-level LCD anyway. The rest of us can take heart, though, that this $670 LCD not only works well as a multimedia display, it"s also full of useful features.

The basic frame and stand of the UltraSharp remains the same as it has for roughly the past two years. It"s a clean-enough design that doesn"t quite have the aesthetic polish of an Apple display, but it"s suitable for display in any environment. The screen is easy to attach and remove, and the stand gives you just as much adjustability as NEC"s recent 24-incher (and much more than any Apple monitor), including tilt, pivot, up-and-down, and 90 degrees of rotation to move into portrait mode.

Dell"s UltraSharp 2407WFP-HC widescreen monitor gives you tons of input flexibility, strong moving image quality, and a handful of other features that will endear you to it as a digital entertainment display. It"s not as strong as we"d like with static images, however, making this display not as well suited to demanding image and graphics professionals.

NEC"s display earned a few design points for its easy-to-navigate onscreen menu, which was made possible by a small joystick next to the power button. Dell"s new UltraSharp receives no such kudos. All of the options you"d expect to find are present, including three presets for multimedia, games, and desktop, but making a selection and navigating in general is unintuitive. Dell also offers no software for integrating the monitor controls with your Windows display settings, a feature of the NEC that we appreciated.

Here"s where the Dell UltraSharp 2407WFP-HC shines. As we"ve listed in the specs above, Dell includes almost every kind of PC and mainstream video input you can imagine on this display, the one exception being HDMI. It"s not out of the question that you might want to connect an HDMI-only device to this monitor, but you can always use a DVI-to-HDMI adapter if that"s a requirement.

Dell also makes great use of the monitor"s downstream USB capability. In addition to four USB 2.0 ports, Dell also includes a 9-in-2 set of media card slots. Building slots for your digital camera data cards into the screen lets you keep your desktop stowed farther out of sight. Those slots also fill a features gap if you own a desktop that lacks a media card reader (aka Mac owners).

Compared to a similarly priced Gateway 24-inch LCD, and a more expensive NEC, the Dell UltraSharp stayed very competitive on our image quality tests. It tied the Gateway in overall quality, and lagged behind the NEC by only a very small number. Digging into the test scores a bit deeper, we found that the Dell UltraSharp was, indeed, ultra sharp, and as good in overall crispness as the more expensive NEC. We were also very happy with the color quality, especially during our World of Warcraft, Kill Bill (Vol. 1) standard-definition DVD, and Swordfish Blu-ray tests.

Our major complaints were that its grayscaling didn"t do very well at very bright white and very dark black, and in general the scaling between shades of gray lacked the intensity of the Gateway and the NEC displays. We also found the intensity of static color lacking as well. That leads us to our conclusion that we like this monitor much more for its moving image capabilities, rather than for photo editing or other tasks where you need to stare at static images for long periods of time.

Like most monitors, the Dell UltraSharp 2407WFP-HC comes with a three-year default warranty. You also get 24-7 telephone assistance and a fair amount of online help. Dell also offers warranty upgrades for up to five years for an additional $49.
