Power Your Dreams: 20 years ago, Microsoft released their first ever Xbox. In 2020, the console manufacturer brought the so-called World’s Most Powerful Console to the market with the Xbox Series X. Let’s travel back in time and take a look at the evolution of the four Xbox generations.

In 2001, American technology giant Microsoft turned the world upside down with the release of their first console: the Xbox. The name is a contraction of DirectX Box, referring to Microsoft’s collection of application programming interfaces. One year later, the Xbox Live service was launched which allowed gamers worldwide to play with each other online.

The first ever Xbox also signified the inauguration of one of the most revolutionary games in history: The Halo franchise. In particular, the 2004 title Halo 2 is regarded as one of the best video games of all time. The console itself was able to display up to a 720p resolution, even though many games came in at just 480p. We all remember the low-poly aesthetic from the early days, but this quickly changed.

After this resounding success, Microsoft released the second generation of their consoles in 2005. The Xbox 360 got an upgraded online service where users could stream music, movies or TV programmes from PCs. Microsoft also launched Kinect, a motion control system that tracked players’ movements to control the game. This allowed for the development of some unique titles such as dance games, Kinect Adventures! and Sonic Free Riders.

In 2007, the second part of the Forza Horizonseries took the fans by storm. The racing game is one of the most successful Xbox exclusives. Over the years, 13 different titles were released under this franchise.

Microsoft’s third generation of consoles was titled an “All-in-one entertainment system” in 2013. The Xbox One allowed players to directly record and stream their gameplay on platforms such as Twitch.

An upgraded version titled Xbox One X in 2017 focused on enabling games to be played at 4K resolution at 60 fps, or 1440p at 120 fps. The edition also included the AMD FreeSync feature.

Our time travel journey brings us back to the present. In 2020, Microsoft released the current generation of consoles with the Xbox Series X, and its lighter version, the Xbox Series S.

Over the past couple months, I’ve had a number of people ask how my 21″ widescreen LCD performs with the Xbox 360. To be honest, I haven’t really been using my monitor for gaming much since one my primary reasons for getting a 360 was to get myself away from this chair once in a while. I’m currently using my 27″ Sony Trinitron television with the S-Video cable. It’s the best resolution I can get on my standard definition television and it’ll hold me over until I can drop the cash for an HDTV. Since I’ve already got 2 cables in my position, I went out and picked up the VGA cable for the 360 to do a little comparison. The results blew me away!

On a standard definition television, S-Video and even Composite looks pretty good. When you use these cables on an LCD it’s just plain ugly. Composite especially, is blurry and blocky around the edges. Just gross! I tried playing Burnout Revenge with the composite cable for a quick race and I had a headache before I was done my second lap. The Xbox 360 Guide looks exceptionally awful and is quite hard to read, where as the same cable on a SDTV looks just fine – nice and crisp. S-Video is a noticeable step up in quality. Especially on text. Things are much easier to read and you don’t feel the strain in your eyes from trying to focus on the blurred edges. Even still, I wouldn’t recommend it. You’re still better off using a SDTV, believe it or not.

One thing to keep in mind when using a widescreen 16:10 LCD is that the Xbox 360 was not designed to be displayed on a screen with this aspect ratio. Widescreen televisions are 16:9 and SDTVs are 4:3 – I guess Microsoft didn’t count on people using widescreen LCD monitors with their 360s. A shame, really since it’s a pretty cheap alternative to an HDTV – not to mention, multipurpose. When using the Composite and S-Video inputs, the image is presented at 4:3 aspect ratio and centered on the screen. There are black bars to the left and right to fill the space. This is better than stretching the image, although it still looks like crap. As soon as you plug in the VGA cable you have a bunch of new options in the form of screen resolutions. Just like your desktop computer, you can change the screen resolution of your Xbox 360. For those that are using a 4:3 LCD monitor, you’re in luck here. You can set your 360 to 1280×1024 and it’ll look great! Those of us at 16:10 aren’t so lucky. As I mentioned previously, most widescreen televisions are 16:9 and there’s no 16:10 resolutions present in the 360. The closest being 1280×768 – the 16:10 variant is 1280×800, so you’ll get 32 pixels worth of stretching. Fortunately, this isn’t a lot considering the resolution. But it is slightly noticeable on things that are meant to be round or square. You should notice in the screenshot above, the VGA example looks taller than the rest. I scaled the VGA version of the full screenshot down to match the rest in the image to the right.

So, if the verdict isn’t clear – it would definitely be worth your $25 to pick up the VGA cable for your Xbox 360 if you don’t yet have a HDTV and want to experience the 360 in all it’s next-gen glory. The difference between the 3 cables is huge, especially when comparing the jump from S-Video to VGA. And for those with a 16:10 monitor, I wouldn’t worry too much about the stretching. It’s hardly noticeable, and for the huge increase in visuals, I’d say it’s a sacrifice you should be willing to make.

The display is a HannsG HL161ABB monitor. The LED backlighting results in a very thin screen – we could have made it even thinner but wanted to ensure stability. 3D printed custom hinges connect the screen to the main unit.

The Kinect port supplies 12 volts. This 12 volts has been used to power the screen, avoiding the need for a special power supply (like this double decker ones I used to build) Also, I didn’t figure anyone hardcore enough to buy one of these would care about Kinect, to be honest.

A: Yes this functions as a normal Xbox 360 console. Please don’t confuse my work with mods that let you play pirated games or install them to the hard drive – that’s what gets you banned from Live.

The Xbox 360 video game console is subject to a number of technical problems and failures that can render it unusable. However, many of the issues can be identified by a series of glowing red lights flashing on the face of the console; the three flashing red lights (nicknamed the "Red Ring of Death" or the "RRoD")bricking" of consoles due to dashboard updates. Since its release on November 22, 2005, many articles have appeared in the media portraying the Xbox 360"s failure rates,SquareTrade to be 23.7% in 2009,

There has been legal action taken attempting to hold Microsoft responsible for the Xbox 360"s failure rate and provide compensation for those affected.

On the Xbox 360 S and E models, the power button utilizes a different design that does not incorporate the same style of lighting that past models used.

In the early months after the console"s launching, Microsoft stated that the Xbox 360"s failure rate was within the consumer electronics industry"s typical 3% to 5%.

On July 5, 2007, Peter Moore, the Vice President of Microsoft"s Interactive Entertainment Business division published an open letter recognizing the console"s problems, as well as announcing a three-year warranty from the original date of purchase for every Xbox 360 console that experiences the "general hardware failure" indicated by three flashing red LEDs on the console.yield of one of the test production runs. 68 of every 100 test units were found to be defective.

Years after leaving Microsoft, Moore recalled preparing to tell the CEO of Microsoft, Steve Ballmer, of his planned response to the incident, "we"ve got to tell Steve, here"s what we have to do: we need to FedEx an empty box to a customer who had a problem - they would call us up - with a FedEx return label to send your box, and then we would FedEx it back to them and fix it. ... I always remember $240m of that was FedEx. ... It was sickening. I was doing a lot of interviews. ... We couldn"t figure it out. ... There was a theory. We had changed our solder, which is the way you put the GPU and the fans, to lead-free. ... We think it was somehow the heat coming off the GPU was drying out some of the solder, and it wasn"t the normal stuff we"d used, because we had to meet European Standards and take the lead out. ... He said, "what"s it going to cost?" I remember taking a deep breath, looking at Robbie, and saying, "we think it"s $1.15bn, Steve." He said, "do it." There was no hesitation. ... If we hadn"t made that decision there and then, and tried to fudge over this problem, then the Xbox brand and Xbox One wouldn"t exist today."

On February 8, 2008, during the Game Developers Conference 2008, Microsoft announced that the "Failure rate has officially dropped", but without mentioning any specifics.SquareTrade published an examination of 1040 Xbox 360s and said that they suffered from a failure rate of 16.4% (one in six). Of the 171 failures, 60% were due to a general hardware failure (and thus fell under the 3 year extended warranty). And of the remaining 40% which were not covered by the extended warranty, 18% were disc read errors, 13% were video card failures, 13% were hard drive freezes, 10% were power issues and 7% were disc tray malfunctions.

People who experience the problem will find that they have to send the Xbox 360 away for repair or replacement and it may take up to 3 weeks to repair or replace. During the time of the Xbox being replaced, Microsoft and UPS will keep the client(s) updated with the current status of where the Xbox is and whether it is being repaired or replaced.

In June 2010, Microsoft released a new "slimmer" Xbox 360. These models indicate hardware failure differently from the original; The outer ring segments cannot turn red anymore. Microsoft has said that henceforth errors will be displayed by the center of the power button changing from green to red.

Almost at the same time the Xbox 360 was released in late 2005, customers began reporting circumferential scratches found on discs used in their Xbox 360 consoles. Almost two years later, in February 2007, the web site "The Llamma"s Adventures" investigated the matter and concluded that some Xbox 360 disc drives lack a mechanism to secure the disc solidly in place.

Although discs scratched by the Xbox 360 are not covered under its warranty,Halo 3 Limited Edition was replaced at no cost until February 1, 2008 according to the Xbox Disc Replacement Program"s main site. Other publishers can be contacted directly for a disc exchange, but it is unclear whether they will replace discs at no cost. Game publisher Electronic Arts details a specific program for this problem which requires the disc and original receipt, with the requirement that the game must be purchased within 90 days of the request for a replacement disc, or they will request a replacement charge of $20 or $25.

In December 2005 (shortly after the Xbox 360"s release in the United States and Canada on November 22, 2005 and around its release in Europe and Asia in early December 2005), reports of unidentifiable noises from the Xbox 360 were appearing on Internet message boards.

The Xbox 360 scratched disc problem received little media coverage in 2006;Kassa investigated several complaints from Dutch consumers about circular scratches made in their Xbox 360 discs.did have these rubber cushions.

During the February 2007 investigation report, Kassa stated that either not all Xbox 360s without protective pads would spontaneously scratch discs, or that the complaints were from Xbox 360 users who had moved their Xbox during use, or who used an unstable setup.

Prompted by consumer reaction to its February 2007 report, Kassa performed several tests with Xbox 360 units from consumers who claimed their Xbox had the problem. Kassa stabilized these consoles and positioned them at a location remote from contact by anyone. The results of the laboratory conditions test revealed that one of the nine tested Xbox 360 units had spontaneously scratched a disc after five hours of gaming. The consoles were also tested standing upright, and the test revealed that three of the nine tested Xbox 360s significantly scratched discs. The video of the complete investigation, meticulously documenting the methodology, and all the relevant details of the tests, was made ready to be aired on April 14, 2007.

Due to the fact that we did not participate in the experiment done by Kassa and have little insight into the methodology that was used, we cannot comment specifically on the outcome. While we are aware that discs can potentially be scratched through normal wear and tear, we have not received any widespread reports of the issue highlighted here. That said, it is important to us that all of our customers have the best gaming experiences possible, and these claims are obviously very concerning to us. We encourage any Xbox customer who believes that their discs have been scratched in the same manner as identified by Kassa, to contact us. We will examine the console and make appropriate repairs if necessary in order to restore the console to full working order, as well as provide customers with information on how to obtain replacement discs should they need them.

Microsoft Netherlands now accepts these complaints from users (while within the warranty period), and offers to replace the Xbox 360 free of charge. Whether Microsoft Netherlands will also replace scratched discs is still unclear. After the official broadcast, (in a continuation of the show which can be viewed on-line, about 28 minutes into the show) a customer is shown calling the Microsoft help-desk, who is told Microsoft will replace his Xbox 360 but is denied a promise to replace his scratched games.

On June 1, 2007, European Commissioner for Consumer Protection Meglena Kuneva, after talking with the producers of "Kassa" and other Dutch consumer organizations,European Commission would investigate the Xbox scratching problems, and would ask Microsoft for an Xbox replacement program for the whole of Europe. She expected Microsoft"s answer within a week.

A man has sued Microsoft claiming the Xbox 360 scratches game discs, saying the consoles are "negligently designed and manufactured." In the lawsuit filed on July 9, 2007 in a Florida federal court, Jorge Brouwer says Microsoft has received thousands of complaints but has not replaced all scratched discs. The lawsuit seeks class action status.

Three law firms in Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Los Angeles, California; and Seattle, Washington are investigating consumer complaints regarding the Xbox 360. The law firms have filed lawsuits in the United States District Court Western District of Washington at Seattle on behalf of a proposed nationwide class of customers who have suffered scratched game discs while using their Xbox 360. The lawsuit seeks class certification and reimbursement for customers for the cost of games damaged by the console; reimbursement for customers who have paid a $20 fee to Microsoft Corporation under a limited disc replacement program offered on ten Microsoft games; repair of consoles free of charge to prevent further disc scratching; and/or reimbursement for customers who have paid for an aftermarket repair solution.

Following Microsoft"s extension of the Xbox 360 warranty to a full year, from the previous 90 days, the California man"s attorney confirmed to the Seattle Post Intelligencer that the lawsuit had been resolved under confidential terms.

In mid 2007, technology and gaming blogs began reporting about new problems with the Xbox 360 losing video output.staticky, or grayscale video output with a proper functioning audio output and no flashing red lights on the console. The complete video failure is sometimes preceded by other graphical glitches such as an irregular saturation of green and/or red colors.

On November 19, 2008, Microsoft released the "New Xbox Experience" (NXE). This update provided streaming Netflix capability and avatars; however, some users have reported the update has caused their consoles to not properly read optical media.HDMI connections.

An E74 error is indicated when the lower-right quadrant of the ring indicator flashes red and displays an error message in multiple languages: "System Error. Contact Xbox Customer Support", with the code E74 at the bottom. The error is caused by a failure in communication between the GPU and the eDRAM die on the GPU. This is usually due to a failure in the flip chip connection of the dies to the substrate, or a failing GPU or eDRAM.

The E74 error has sometimes been described by many as a "Green Screen of Death" and a "Black Screen of Death" because early versions of these errors had an almost jet-black background with a hue of dark green. Later versions would show a completely jet-black background. Reports of impending Q4 red-light failure stem from users who report an abnormal display with poor, grainy video as well as black dots or artifacts appearing on the screen. Vertical green or red strokes on the screen can also indicate a video system malfunction, preceding the RROD or the E74 error.

Xbox 360 consoles which have a hardware failure will display a secondary error code by blinking a sequence of LEDs when the sync button is held down and the eject button is pressed four times.

The Xbox One is a home video game console developed by Microsoft. Announced in May 2013, it is the successor to Xbox 360 and the third console in the Xbox series. It was first released in North America, parts of Europe, Australia, and South America in November 2013 and in Japan, China, and other European countries in September 2014. It is the first Xbox game console to be released in China, specifically in the Shanghai Free-Trade Zone. Microsoft marketed the device as an "all-in-one entertainment system", hence the name "Xbox One".eighth-generation console, it mainly competed against Sony"s PlayStation 4 and Nintendo"s Wii U and later the Switch.

Moving away from its predecessor"s PowerPC-based architecture, the Xbox One marks a shift back to the x86 architecture used in the original Xbox; it features an AMD Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) built around the x86-64 instruction set. Xbox One"s controller was redesigned over the Xbox 360"s, with a redesigned body, D-pad, and triggers capable of delivering directional haptic feedback. The console places an increased emphasis on cloud computing, as well as social networking features and the ability to record and share video clips or screenshots from gameplay or livestream directly to streaming services such as Mixer and Twitch. Games can also be played off-console via a local area network on supported Windows 10 devices. The console can play Blu-ray Disc, and overlay live television programming from an existing set-top box or a digital tuner for digital terrestrial television with an enhanced program guide. The console optionally included a redesigned Kinect sensor, marketed as the "Kinect 2.0", providing improved motion tracking and voice recognition.

The Xbox One received positive reviews for its refined controller design, multimedia features, and voice navigation. Its quieter and cooler design was praised for making the console more reliable than its predecessor at launch, but the console was generally criticized for running games at a technically lower graphical level than the PlayStation 4. Its original user interface was panned for being nonintuitive, although changes made to it and other aspects of the console"s software post-launch received a positive reception. Its Kinect received praise for its improved motion-tracking accuracy, its face recognition logins, and its voice commands.

The original Xbox One model was succeeded by the Xbox One S in 2016, which has a smaller form factor and support for HDR10 high-dynamic-range video, as well as support for 4K video playback and upscaling of games from 1080p to 4K. It was praised for its smaller size, its on-screen visual improvements, and its lack of an external power supply, but its regressions such as the lack of a native Kinect port were noted. A high-end model, named Xbox One X, was unveiled in June 2017 and released in November; it features upgraded hardware specifications and support for rendering games at 4K resolution. The system was succeeded by the Xbox Series X and Series S consoles, which launched on November 10, 2020. Production of all Xbox One consoles ceased at the end of that year.

The Xbox One is the successor to Xbox 360, Microsoft"s previous video game console, which was introduced in November 2005 as part of the seventh generation of video game consoles.Kinect motion sensor that year, which Lewis stated would extend the lifecycle by five years.

Initial hardware for the 360"s successor, commonly referred to by the industry as the "Xbox 720",cloud access to games and media, integration with phone and tablet devices, and technology to provide players heads-up displays on glasses worn by the player, codenamed "Fortaleza"; Microsoft did not comment on these reported features.

Prior to the official unveiling, a rumor had circulated that the next Xbox console would be an "always on" system requiring a persistent Internet connection, though Microsoft had not confirmed this. This had drawn some concerns from consumers, which were heightened when Microsoft Studios employee Adam Orth stated in a Twitter message in April 2013 that said, "Sorry, I don"t get the drama around having an "always on" console...Every device now is "always on." That"s the world we live in. #dealwithit". Orth"s message drew further ire towards Microsoft, with concerns about digital rights management and practices against the sale of used games with an "always on" unit. Orth opted to leave Microsoft a few days later due to the backlash.

In a press conference on May 21, 2013, the new console was publicly unveiled under the name Xbox One and was presented as an all-in-one home entertainment device.Phil Spencer, head of Xbox at Microsoft, recalled that this approach not only confused consumers about the intent of the Xbox One, but also Microsoft employees who had been working on the console. Spencer stated that several employees complained to him about the presentation "blow[ing] up all the good work that [they]"ve done by talking about the product in a way that"s not really matching what the soul of an Xbox console is about and what [their] customers are looking for from [Microsoft]".

As a result of the negative feedback from the May presentation, the press event for E3 2013 focused on the video game functionality of the Xbox One first and foremost; Don Mattrick, then Microsoft"s president of Interactive Entertainment Business, described the event as "all about the games".localizing the device"s voice recognition capabilities.

Microsoft initially announced a different game licensing scheme for Xbox One than what was used upon its release: all games, including those purchased at retail, would be bound to the user"s Xbox Live account. Users could access their purchased games from any other Xbox One console, play games without their disc once installed, and allow users to "share" their games with up to ten designated "family" members. If a publisher allowed a game to be traded or resold, users could do this at "participating retailers", and could also transfer a game directly to any Xbox Live friend who had been on their list for at least 30 days, but only once per game. To synchronize licenses, the console would be required to connect to the internet once every 24 hours; if the console could not connect, all games would be disabled until the console was connected again.

Reaction to this digital rights management scheme was extremely negative in light of the previous concerns about the "always on" console from earlier in the year. Critics felt that the changes would infringe on consumers" first-sale rights for games purchased on physical media, as games would only be licensed to users rather than sold, and the disc itself would only be used to install the game and not confer ownership of its license or permission to resell. Microsoft also stated that game publishers would decide whether the physical copies of their games would be eligible for resale, and could impose restrictions or activation fees on second-hand copies of games. In addition, loaning or renting games would not be possible at the console"s launch, and Microsoft was "exploring the possibilities" with its partners.anti-consumerist, trying to "punish their loyal customers" with strict restrictions, and that "by saying no to the used game restrictions and always-online that Microsoft is so happily implementing on the Xbox One, Sony has elevated the PlayStation 4 as the console to grab this holiday season."

On June 19, 2013, shortly after E3 2013, Microsoft announced (in response to the negative reaction) that it would change its Xbox One DRM policy and game licensing model and reverse course.Don Mattrick, then president of Microsoft"s Interactive Entertainment Business, stated that the licensing changes were in response to the negative public reaction.Zynga. Analysts speculated that his departure was predicated on the poor response and subsequent reversal of the plans for Xbox One.

Microsoft also backtracked on a similarly controversial requirement for the Kinect sensor to be plugged into the Xbox One at all times for it to function. Privacy advocates argued that Kinect sensor data could be used for targeted advertising and to perform unauthorized surveillance on users. In response to these claims, Microsoft reiterated that Kinect voice recognition and motion tracking can be disabled by users, that Kinect data cannot be used for advertising under its privacy policy, and that the console would not redistribute user-generated content without permission. Alongside the above changes, the Xbox One did not require the Kinect to be plugged in to operate by launch, though the initial bundles still included the Kinect device.

In response to these pre-launch changes and a belief that Microsoft"s initial decisions for the console were in poor judgement, journalists and consumers jokingly gave the Xbox One nicknames such as the "Xbox 180", in reference to the Xbox 360 and Microsoft"s decision to reverse its controversial decisions, and "Xbone", suggesting that the company was "throwing a bone" to consumers by making these changes.

In 2015, four members of an international hacking group pleaded guilty to gaining unauthorized access to Microsoft"s computer network and obtaining sensitive information relating to Xbox One and Xbox Live.

On June 13, 2016, during its E3 2016 press conference, Microsoft unveiled Xbox One S, a revision of the original Xbox One hardware with a streamlined form factor and support for HDR10 and 4K video.Xbox One X.

The original Xbox One"s exterior casing consists of a two-tone "liquid black" finish; with half finished in a matte grey, and the other in a glossier black. The matte side of the top of the console consists of a large air vent. The design was intended to evoke a more entertainment-oriented and simplified look than previous iterations of the console; among other changes, the LED rings used by Xbox 360 are replaced by a glowing white Xbox logo used to communicate the system"s status to the user.

Xbox One S utilizes a refreshed version of this design, with a case that is 40% smaller in size and supports vertical orientation with a stand. The main Xbox One S SKU is colored in an entirely matte "Robot White" finish, with half of the console adorned with machined holes, and a visible circular vent on top of the console"s right half. It utilizes push-button controls rather than capacitive keys,

The Xbox Wireless Controller maintains the overall layout found in the Xbox 360"s controller, but with various refinements to its form. Kinect 2.0 features a wide-angle time-of-flight camera1080p camera, in comparison to the VGA resolution of the Xbox 360 version, and processes 2 GB of data per second to map its environment. Kinect 2.0 has an improved accuracy over its predecessor; it can track up to 6 people simultaneously, referred to as "skeletons", perform heart rate tracking, track controller gestures, and read QR codes to redeem Xbox Live gift cards. By default, voice recognition is active at all times, so the console can receive voice commands from the user, even when the console is in sleep mode. It is possible to wake the console with a command, although settings are available to change which individual Kinect functions are active.

Prior to and after the mandate, all Xbox One consoles initially shipped with the Kinect sensor included. On June 9, 2014, cheaper Xbox One bundles were introduced, which did not include the Kinect sensor.

The Xbox One runs two operating systems within a hypervisor; games run within one separate operating system, while apps and the user interface run within a stripped-down version of Microsoft Windows; the original system software was based on Windows 8, but it has since been changed to Windows 10.Universal Windows Platform apps, which can be designed to run across Xbox One, Windows 10, and Windows 10 Mobile in synchronization with the Windows platform.

The Xbox SmartGlass app provides extended functionality on Xbox One, allowing devices running Windows Phone, Windows 8, iOS and Android to be used as a companion device for Xbox One features, such as powering on the console, a remote control, accessing messages and the Activity Feed, purchasing content, and providing integration with certain games and content.

On Windows 10, SmartGlass is succeeded by the Xbox App, which supports the local streaming of games from Xbox One to personal computers and tablets running Windows 10.

Per a partnership with Oculus VR, users will also be able to stream Xbox One games to the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset by means of Xbox app for Windows 10; as of 2015 there were no immediate plans for direct integration between Xbox One and Oculus Rift.

Microsoft’s last Xbox app update enabling Xbox games to an iPhone or iPad was announced to be live. Updated Xbox app was made available in the App Store, which included a remote play feature. The app would only support Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S games; older Xbox 360 and original Xbox games were not enabled to be streamed remotely to Android or iOS/iPadOS devices.

Xbox One games are distributed physically on Blu-ray Disc, and digitally as downloads through Microsoft Store (formerly Xbox Games Store).installed to the console"s storage: one can begin to play portions of a game (such as opening levels) once the installation or download reaches a specific point, while the remainder of the game is downloaded or installed in the background. In 2016, Microsoft began to make future Xbox One-exclusive first-party releases simultaneously available on Windows 10 PCs, with digital cross-buy support via Microsoft Store under the branding Xbox Play Anywhere. This, thus, makes the games Microsoft platform exclusives rather than Xbox One exclusives.

In February 2017, Microsoft introduced an "on-demand" subscription service known as Xbox Game Pass, separate from Xbox Live Gold, which allows users to download and play games from its library for the life of the subscription.

At its launch, the Xbox One did not have native backward compatibility with original Xbox or Xbox 360 games, and at the time Microsoft stated it had no plans for any form of backward compatibility on the console.

All Xbox 360 and original Xbox games that are supported by backwards compatibility on the Xbox One are also supported on the Xbox Series X/S. In addition, these games include automatic high-dynamic-range rendering (HDR) and resolution increases, depending on the original game and current platform. Select games have also been enabled with FPS Boost that increases the rendering rate up to 60 frames per second.

Microsoft does not anticipate that there will be as many Xbox titles brought to the program as with the Xbox 360, primarily due to legal issues related to intellectual property, contracts, and companies that have since gone defunct.

While the initial unveiling of the Xbox One in May 2013 created criticism that led to significant changes in the digital rights management scheme it would use, other features of the console were highlighted by journalists. The editorial staff of Game Informer offered both praise and criticism for the console. Matt Helgeson described the console as Microsoft"s intent to "control the living room". He called Xbox One"s instant switching features "impressive", and that the console was "a step in the right direction" with regards to TV entertainment, especially the prospect of avoiding the usage of non-intuitive user interfaces often found on cable set-top boxes. Jeff Cork said that Microsoft had "some great ideas" for the console, but that it failed to properly communicate them.

Upon its release, the Xbox One received favorable reviews from critics and reviewers. In its launch review, Windows 8"s design language, the interface was disfavored for hiding functions under the controller"s menu button and for being awkward to use with a controller or motion gestures, seemingly encouraging users to use voice navigation instead. While praised for having more "robust" voice navigation than Xbox 360, they felt that voice navigation still had a "learning curve in understanding what works and what doesn"t." Although its user following, Smart Match, and improved voice chat features were noted, Xbox Live was panned for not offering the option on-launch to add a real name to user profiles. Despite a regression in local and network multimedia functionality in comparison to Xbox 360 and how OneGuide interacted with outside set-top boxes (drawing comparisons to the operations of TiVo DVRs), Polygon felt the Xbox One"s overall multimedia experience "feels like a major step forward in set-top boxes and makes the Xbox One the obvious center of any living room that has one."

Later on, critics felt that the Xbox One"s functionality had matured over the year following its launch; Jeff Bakalar of USB 3.0 as secondary storage, and having a "slightly better" lineup of upcoming exclusives, concluding that "While the PS4 had a clear advantage at launch, that edge is slowly evaporating as Microsoft has worked feverishly to undo most of the Xbox One"s original missteps."

The Xbox One S revision was critically praised for its improvements over the original model, including its streamlined design, the addition of HDR and 4K video support, and visual improvements on some games (such as fragmentation of Xbox One"s ecosystem, as not all users will necessarily experience a game the same way.
