Production of Sharp’s AQUOS LCD color TVs passed the five-million mark*1 on December 28, 2004. Sharp has also been providing larger screen LCD TVs and higher performance models with a variety of lineup as well as delivering new viewing styles for LCD TVs.

The fluorescent elements, or LEDs (light emitting diodes), used in displays up to that time consumed a lot of electricity, so calculators had to be equipped with bulky batteries. Sharp set out to find a new display that would use less energy and take up less space. After examining the problem from every angle, it was finally decided to begin research into LCD (liquid crystal display) technology in 1970.

Though the superior characteristics of LCDs had already been recognized by researchers throughout the world, the technology was generally dismissed as impractical for commercial use due to the difficulty of selecting and combining the necessary materials. But through the unrelenting efforts of Sharp"s engineers, the company succeeded in 1973 in introducing a calculator with the world"s first practical LCD unit. This second electronic calculator was truly a breakthrough and became a big hit. Compared to the first calculator, it was only 1/12 the depth, 1/125 the weight, consumed only 1/9000 the power, and could be used 100 hours on one D3 battery.

One Sharp success in optoelectronics was the development in 1988 of the world"s first 14-inch color TFT LCD. A mere 2.7 cm thick, it boasted a sharp, bright picture. This development showed that the long-awaited, wall-mount LCD TV and truly portable data communications terminals were on the horizon.

In October 1992, the debut of the LCD ViewCam introduced a whole new concept in video cameras. Its ease of use gave Sharp an immediate share increase in the video camera market. The ViewCam was chosen as one of just 16 products from among approximately 13,000 nominated for Nikkei Product and Service Excellence Awards. It was also chosen for the Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun"s (Japan"s leading industrial daily) 10 Best New Products Awards. The LCD ViewCam became the flagship product that showed the world that "LCD is Sharp" and contributed to boosting the company image.

Sharp created a buzz with the announcement of a 28-inch TFT LCD using next-generation LCD technology. The announcement boosted demand enthusiasm for LCDs for computers and large-screen wall-mount TVs in a new age of multimedia.

Using the new CG-Silicon (continuous grain silicon) technology jointly developed with Semiconductor Energy Laboratory Co., Ltd. (Atsugi, Kanagawa Prefecture), Sharp made a splash with its prototype ultra high-definition 60-inch rear projector that uses three 2.6-inch CG-Silicon LCD panels.

Sharp went on to offer consumers more ways to enhance their lifestyles with more AQUOS product introductions: a PC card slot-equipped AQUOS (LC-20B1/15B1/13B1), a wide 30-inch digital HDTV model (LC-30BV3) that can be a family"s main TV, and the AQUOS Theater, a stylish entertainment system that"s a combination of AQUOS and a DVD 1-bit digital theater system.

The most advanced facility for the integrated production of LCD TVs from the manufacturing of LCD panels to assembly of final products is completed in Kameyama, Mie Perfecture, Japan, and started operation. The plant also provides the rationalization of the process of production, inspection and delivery, as well as technology development, resulting in high production efficiency and high value-added performance.

Sharp Systems of Americahas announced a new line of LCD monitors, including the first 10-bit gamma corrected LCD display. Sharp said it’s the first LCD panel in a commercial product capable of displaying more than a billion colors.

The US$1,299 LL-T1820 is Sharp’s new flagship LCD display. It’s an 18-inch monitor that sports new technology which makes it possible to display 10-bits of grayscale per subpixel for a total of 2 to the thirtieth power colors — 64 times the number of colors displayable by a conventional LCD panel, according to the company.

Sharp Systems senior Vice President and General Manager Greg Nakagawa said that the LL-T1820 raises the bar for LCD displays. “The ability to reproduce a much finer color gradation sweeps away one of the few remaining areas in which a CRT has shown superiority over an LCD in professional applications such a pre-press and medical imaging.” said Nakagawa.

The monitor also features 25ms response time and a 170-viewing angle, horizontally and vertically. The display also sports reduced power consumption technology, improved brightness (220 nits), as well as a multi-layer surface treatment that reduces glare and reflection down to about one third of what a conventional LCD produces. It sits in a bezel that measures 17mm, and sports dual DVI inputs. It’s available in either black or white casing.

The company also introduced today the LL-T1803, another 18-inch LCD display. It sports analog and DVI inputs, 400:1 contrast ratio, and the same response time and brightness as its upscale counterpart — ideal for watching DVDs or playing video games, Sharp noted. It also features a backlight rated at 50,000 hours — 2.5 to 3 times longer than a comparable CRT monitor. It’s coming in May and will cost $949.

The LL-T1520 is Sharp’s new top-end 15-inch LCD display. The LCD flat panel system features the same ASV technology as the LL-T1820, so it has the same response time (25ms) and the same 170-viewable angle. It also sports the same glare reduction coating. The LL-T1520 features two stereo multimedia speakers, and is available in white or black this May for $499.

Bringing up the low end is Sharp’s LL-T15G1. It features a brightness of 260 nits and a 350:1 contrast ration. It also sports auto synchronization and auto gain controls, which Sharp said would yield the best image from a PC or Mac. The base of the LL-T15G1 sports a VESA-compliant hole patter for wall or arm mounting, thus eliminating the need to remove the display’s base. The display has a low power consumption backlight (29 watts) and long life (50,000 hours under normal conditions). Coming in May, the LL-T15G1 will cost $249.

Sharp hasn"t cut production in its Kameyana plant since it began operating in 2004, but it"s dangerously close to dialing things back a bit. Sharp reports that it will now expand the distribution of its 32” professional color management monitor beyond Japan to the EU market. The 8M-B32C1 is an HDR (High Dynamic Range) 8K (7680×4320) resolution monitor with 1000cd/m² of peak luminance and a 10-bit color management solution.

According to Peter Heins, Senior Product Manager Large Format Displays at Sharp NEC Display Solutions Europe GmbH, the peak luminance is measured using a 3×3 checkboard pattern (ANSI contrast). That is effectively a 50% window. Luminance in a more typical 10% window was not specified. Heins further clarified that the full-screen white luminance was 800 nits, which is relatively high.

The display features Sharp’s advanced Uniformity Calibration Correction Technology (UCCT) software. This factory calibration measures and corrects inconsistencies in chroma, luminance, and hue values, storing correction values stored in an on-board LUT to deliver uniform white and colors. Users can quickly restore these settings because of drift or manual changes.

Sharp also supplies its own Display Calibration Utility software for PC. Users can adjust the color more precisely using an external X-Rite sensor (X-rite i1Pro or X-rite i1Pro PLUS) to maintain luminance and color values over time. These sensors were chosen because of the high luminance values. The display does not support calibration using CalMan software, however.

Product literature states that the Sharp 32” 8K monitor can identify colors outside the Rec. 709 color gamut in gray whether the signal is in BT.2020 coordinates or DCI-P3 coordinates. The monitor can clip those colors to fall within the target Rec. 709 gamut for SDR content. It is unclear if the monitor will identify colors outside the DCI-P3 color gamut and clip those for HDR content.
