tl;dr. AOC 24G2 is a great monitor if (1) you luck out in the panel lottery, or (2) you"re willing to overlook dead subpixels and/or glaring uniformity issues for the cheap price tag.tl;dr2. Beware AOC 24G2 doesn"t have 126% "gamut coverage" of the sRGB color space. Its actual sRGB gamut coverage is about 99.7%.Review Part 1. Panel Lottery. You have 1 in 5 chance of hitting the jackpot based on my experience.Monitor #1 (ordered June 13, 2020).The jackpot. It had some backlight bleeding and white uniformity issues (see the calibration verification results for Monitor #1), but they were negligible, especially at this price point. Fantastic.Monitor #2 (ordered June 13, 2020).Dead green subpixel in the bottom right corner.Monitor #3 (ordered June 19, 2020).Dead green subpixel near the mid-left edge.Monitor #4 (ordered June 22, 2020).Giant crack across the width of the panel. I... How?Monitor #5 (ordered June 22, 2020).No dead pixels or cracks, but the panel had some serious uniformity issues. The white wasn"t really white in the bottom left corner, and the backlight bleeding in the bottom right corner was bad enough it was visible under overhead light. So I brought out my colorimeter and took some measurements (see the calibration verification results for Monitor #5). Sure enough, the whitepoint dE00 was verging on 3 in the bottom left corner while the static contrast at the bottom right corner was measured at 816:1. That"s about 55% of the value measured at the center of the screen, and about 82% of the value (1000:1) listed for the PANDA LC238LF1F panel, which is the panel used in AOC 24G2.Review Part 2. sRGB Gamut Coverage.AOC advertises that 24G2 is capable of "displaying over 126% of sRGB gamut profile." This is disingenuous as it leads people to believe that this monitor has 126% sRGB gamut coverage. The sRGB gamut coverage for 24G2 is actually about 99.7%, falling slightly short on the blue end of the color space (see the dlCtCp map for Monitor #1). The data sheet for the PANDA LC238LF1F panel corroborates this, listing its sRGB gamut coverage at 99%.Then where does that 126% come from? As you can see on the dlCtCp map, 24G2"s gamut coverage on the red and green ends does extend a fair bit beyond the sRGB color space (dotted line). So, 24G2 is capable of "displaying" reds and greens 126% beyond the sRGB color space. However, the actual sRGB gamut "coverage" - whether or not the monitor is capable of producing all colors of the sRGB color space - is 99.7%. AOC isn"t making false claims, but they are misleading at the least. While I"m talking about colors, the average RGB dE00 for the good 24G2 I received is 0.17 - nothing short of amazing. Sure, the monitor does have trouble displaying dark colors accurately, where the dE00 for one of the darker blues is 1.38, but this is totally expected. AOC 24G2 is a cheap IPS gaming monitor. I"d be genuinely surprised if it was able to produce deep dark colors accurately.Review Wrap Up.I"ve returned all but the first 24G2s and won"t be purchasing more since my luck seems to have run out with AOC 24G2. The one good one I got is awesome. It is hands down the best bang for the buck monitor on the market. And really, most people either won"t even notice these problems or are willing to overlook them since AOC 24G2 has a great price tag for the features it offers. If you are like most people, this monitor is a solid choice. If you are like me however -- good luck.
